2 MICHAEL BEARD, PASTORAL ASSOCIATE Dear Saint Anne Catholic Community: Hello! My name is Michael Beard, and I m thrilled to be joining the staff at Saint Anne as the new Pastoral Associate. In very broad strokes, I m from the Pacific Northwest (born in Seattle, raised in Portland), did my undergrad at Catholic University of America in D.C., lived in Peru for a year in a half post-grad, discerned a call to do ministry for the Church and got my Master of Divinity from the University of Notre Dame. That s a lot to just gloss over. I m the older of two boys, born and raised by loving and amazing parents whom I m blessed to have had present throughout my 28 years of life. I grew up loving Science and Math, but somewhere in my high school years, I discovered just how much I loved music, Philosophy, service, religion and forging good friendships there was a lot of indecision when it came time to pick a college and major. I was never quite able to cut my interests down: while I majored in Psychology at Catholic University, I also minored in Philosophy, Theology and Math. After I graduated, I worked in Lima, Peru, for about 18 months. God was calling me to encounter Him in a powerful new way, and I had no idea what I was getting myself into. The Capuchin Franciscans work in a poorer area of Lima. I found myself there, working mostly with year old boys for a year and a half. It was an amazing experience and game-changing time of my life. I ll be happy to talk your ear off about just about anything from that time should you want to ask me! In a nutshell, though, that experience prompted my desire to work in a ministry setting, working for and with folks to recognize the ways God is present, active and calling in their lives. This prompted me to go to Notre Dame for graduate school where I got the most fancy-sounding of degrees: Master of Divinity. It s a degree that many folks get on the road to being ordained because it gives solid intellectual formation but has effective communication of, collaboration with and reception of God s love with others as its primary goals. I m coming to you after a year of working back at CUA, my alma mater. I was blessed to work there with some great folks in the office of campus ministry as the Campus Minister in charge of retreats and men s ministries. I definitely found it rewarding, as it resonated with my reasons for wanting to dedicate my career to ministry. That said, a tremendous blessing prompted my relocation: I am engaged to marry my lovely fiancée, Elizabeth, at the end of October. She is a Chicago native, and lots of prayers and discussions resulted in the decision to begin our life together here in the Chicago area. She works as the Pastoral Associate of St. Benedict Parish in Chicago and has been a life-saver as far as getting familiar with my surroundings! Please keep us in your prayers as we prepare to get married! With all of that, I want to say again: I m thrilled to be joining the staff here, but even more so, I m excited to meet you and enter into this amazing community. I have the extraordinary blessing of serving as staff animator of the RCIA program, the Baptism Preparation Ministry (with Deacon Bill Karstenson and his wife Sueanne), the Young Marrieds Outreach and STAGG in my role as Pastoral Associate. Continuing Sisters Anna Marie and Lauretta s extraordinary ministries in these venues is humbling to say the least! I m here to be present to you and your needs, so please feel free to give me a call, shoot me an or look for me after Mass! I look forward to meeting you! 2 Saint Anne Church July 19, 2015 stannebarrington.org

12 Sharing the Living Story By Clem Aseron (A) Lectionary texts: (B) Bible texts (has verse #): SIXTEENTH SUNDAY OF THE YEAR, 2015 (107B) 1st Reading: Jeremiah 23:1-6 Psalm 23:1-3, 3-4, 5, 6 Rx = The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want. 2nd Reading: Ephesians 2:13-18 Gospel: Mark 6:30-34 Please refer to (A) and (B) above when I cite verses in the commentary below. Two Sundays ago, at Mark 6:1, we saw Jesus and the disciples in his home town on the Judean (Jewish) side of the Jordan River, west of Lake Galilee, where Mark tells that because the people of his own hometown had denied him honor, Jesus went instead to the villages in the vicinity teaching. Last week, Jesus sends twelve disciples (at v.30, called apostles = those sent) on their first mission by giving them his authority and sending them forth into the villages of the vicinity to preach repentance, drive out demons and cure the sick. Today s gospel pericope 1 is the same geographic setting. The images, therefore, resonate with those in Mark s community who know well their Hebrew scripture. At Mark 6:34, they would remember that God chose Joshua to succeed Moses as leader in order that the Lord s community may not be like sheep without a shepherd. (Numbers 27:16-17) The crowd listening to Jesus, as well as Mark s community, would also recall Ezekiel s harsh denouncement of the leadership of Israel: Woe to the shepherds of Israel who have been pasturing themselves rather than caring for the people (Ezekiel 34:2-6, but see verses through 16 for the rescue), and note the Lectionary choice of today s Hebrew scripture passage where the prophet Jeremiah also condemns leadership that does not take care of the people but he gives unmistakable hope that a son of David will come who will govern wisely, [and] do what is just and right in the land (compare Jeremiah s rescue at vv.3-6 with Ezekiel s at 34:6-16. Today, we learn that upon the apostles return from strenuous missionary activity (6:8-13), Jesus invites them on a get-away for rest by themselves but are pursued, overwhelmed by great numbers from all the villages. Mark portrays Jesus insight and compassion for the villagers: his heart was moved with pity for them, for they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things. Jesus is in solidarity with the ones without a shepherd; they hunger for a true leader as in today s Jeremiah: a leader who will gather the scattered, care for them, lead them to a meadow where they will be among the fold, where they will multiply, where they will be without fear and moreover, where there will be the promised offspring of David who will govern wisely with the Lord s justice, and they will dwell securely. In the very next verses, Mark will have Jesus feeding their physical hunger (vv.34-44). However, note that we will see this same pattern unfold over these next five weeks when the Lectionary takes us to John s gospel (Chap. 6) to experience the feeding of the people in what has come to be known as the Bread of Life Discourse. In addition to reading the narrative, attention to the cultural and social contexts will again make the picture more intelligible. At v.31, the Greek term (here translated deserted ) describes a place that is uninhabited 2 as well as poor in vegetation. Large portions of the countryside were uninhabited and considered to be wilderness, a place where one could be lost, where wild animals would be encountered, a place of chaos. In order to rest, to continue their exchange about their missionary journey (vv.30 ff) and to enjoy the socializ- 12 Saint Anne Church July 19, 2015 stannebarrington.org

13 Sharing the Living Story ing and bonding that meal times provide, Jesus and the disciples would have had to escape from his hometown where the Mediterranean custom of hospitality would have dictated that any of the extended family would have had to be included. Hence, Mark s pointed statement: People were coming and going and they had no opportunity even to eat. They are unsuccessful at getting away the crowds run ahead of them. The compassionate Jesus feeds their spirit, and Mark s reader is now disposed for the next scenes: the Feeding of the Five Thousand and the Feeding of the Four Thousand; although the Lectionary will take us to John s Chapter 6 next week, it is noteworthy that the lesson to Mark s readers about the two different feedings again concerns the two disparate groups, Jew and Gentile peoples! (see 6:34ff. and 7:31-8:1ff.) This is yet another example of Mark s inclusivity. The psalm for today is a favorite of many. It comforts us and fills us with an overwhelming feeling of trust. We use it in times of distress when we are lonely, lost, when we feel vulnerable or at a funeral, for example or on the Lenten Sunday when we hear the story of the man who is given inner eyes as well as physical sight (John 9:1 ff.). (The Lectionary uses this psalm on seven different occasions.) It inspires confidence: The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want. To whom do these pronouns refer? St. Paul gives the clue at v.14 in today s Second Reading he is our peace; in his flesh, he has made both Jews and Gentiles into one and has broken down the dividing wall, that is, the hostility between us. 3 Or is all this simply, or only, historical? The metaphor of sheep being cared for by their shepherd would be very apt in a pastoral culture. But what do we make of it? What do many churches call their senior clergyperson? SO WHAT?? All four scriptures today speak of the great intimacy with which a shepherd cares for his sheep; when all is said and done, it is the Lord and the Lord alone who is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want. Recall a time when you where overwhelmed with the tender and loving care you received from the Shepherd. Or, recall the time when you were the hands of the Shepherd. 1 Bible passage selected for the Lectionary (book of readings prescribed for Sunday or daily Mass); they may or may not be continuous verses. 2 It is estimated that Nazareth at that time had a population of around 150. Remember also that 90% of the people lived in small villages; there were only three or four cities the size of Jerusalem. 3 NRSV (New Revised Standard Version) Works consulted: Wilfrid Harrington, O.P., Mark; Ched Myers, et. al., Say to This Mountain, Mark s Story of Discipleship; Irene Nowell, O.S.B., Sing a New Song: The Psalms in the Sunday Lectionary; John J. We look forward to sharing these celebrations with those who, in some way, are part of our community. Therefore, please note the following: Visitation of the Sick: If you or a family member are in a local hospital or are homebound and would like a visit from a minister of care or a priest, call Mary Hoffing at Baptism: Our Baptism ministry is pleased to help your family prepare for the special event of your child s entrance into our faith community. Two Baptism sessions are required for parents baptizing their 1st child Parents who have had a Baptism at another Catholic Church and are now wanting to baptize a child at Saint Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before scheduling Baptism Parents who have already attended Baptism preparation at Saint Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before scheduling Baptism Information for setting a Baptism date will be given at the meeting or at the time of the interview. Please call the parish office at where all scheduling is done. Marriage: To be married at Saint Anne, your preparation process should begin 7 months to one year prior to your wedding date. Please call the parish office to secure a date as soon as possible. Membership at Saint Anne is not a requirement. We look forward to helping you during this time of engagement and preparation for the vocation of Christian marriage. First Eucharist and First Reconciliation: These sacraments are typically celebrated in second grade. Candidates must be registered parishioners and complete the two-year preparation program. Please call the Faith Formation and Education office at with questions. Confirmation: This sacrament is celebrated in high school. Candidates must be registered parishioners and complete the two-year preparation program. Please call the PATHS office at Reconciliation: Saturdays, 9:15 a.m. until all are heard or by appointment. Registration: To enter into our faith community, please attend an information/registration session at 9:30 a.m. in the Hospitality Room, followed by the 11:00 a.m. Mass on the 1st Sunday of the month, except on holiday weekends when there are no sessions.
