2 EUCHARIST AS NEW MANNA by Father Ronald Rolheiser, OMI A friend of mine, an alcoholic in recovery, likes to explain the dynamics of an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting this way: It s funny, the meetings are always the same, the exact same things get said over and over again. Everything is totally predictable; everyone, except those who are there for the first time, know already what will be said. And we re not there to show our best sides to each other. I don t go to an Alcoholics Anonymous meetings to share my talents or to be a nice guy. No. I go because if I don t, I know and know for sure that I will start drinking again and eventually destroy myself. It s that simple. I go there to stay alive! In a curious but accurate way, that can also be a description of the Eucharist, at least of one important aspect of it. Among other reasons, we go to the Eucharist to stay alive. The Eucharist is meant to be God s regular nourishment for us, daily manna to keep us alive within the desert of our lives. We get this theology from John s Gospel. The gospels, as we know, do not have just one theology of the Eucharist. The various communities in the early church each emphasized different things about the Eucharist. John, unlike the other evangelists, does not set the Eucharist so saliently into the context of the last supper. He does set it there but places it in another context as well. In John s Gospel, where the other gospels have the institution of the Eucharist at the last supper, he has Jesus washing the disciples feet. Various scholars, Raymond Brown among them, suggest that John does this because by the time his gospel was written, perhaps sixty to seventy years after Jesus died, Christians, not unlike today, were already arguing with each other about the Eucharist: How often should it be celebrated? Who should preside? What is its precise meaning? John, in placing the washing of the feet where the other evangelists put the words of institution, is reminding us that washing each other s feet, service to and humility before each other, is what the Eucharist is really all about. But John also emphasizes another aspect of Eucharist. While linking the Eucharist to the Last Supper and highlighting that it means service and humility, John also places it into Jesus discourse on the bread of life. In chapter six of his gospel, Jesus says: Unless you eat the bread of life, you will not have life within you. In speaking of the bread of life, he links it to the manna, the daily feeding that Israel received from God during her years in the desert. For all those years, manna was Israel s daily food and, often times, her only food. It had, too, a curious quality. When she ate it alongside other foods she had procured for herself or food she had brought out of Egypt, it tasted bitter, but if she took manna as her only food, it tasted sweet. In either case, it was her daily sustenance. In John s Gospel, Jesus tells us that the Eucharist is the new manna, the new bread from heaven, the new way that God gives us daily sustenance. The Roman Catholic practice of daily Eucharist takes its root here. That is why too, in Roman Catholic spirituality, unlike much of Protestantism, the Eucharist has not been called the Lord s Supper since it was understood not as an extraordinary ritual to commemorate the last supper but as a ordinary, ideally daily, ritual to give us sustenance from God. How does the Eucharist give us daily sustenance? The Eucharist nurtures us by giving us God s physical embrace ( the real presence ) and, like a Quaker-silence, it gives us a oneness with each other that we cannot give to ourselves. However, it nurtures us in yet a further way. It provides us with a life-sustaining ritual, a regular meeting around the word and person of Christ that can become the daily bread of our lives and our communities. How? Monks have secrets worth knowing. One of these is that a community sustains itself not primarily through novelty, titillation and high emotion but through rhythm and routine, namely, through simple, predictable, ritual processes. For example, a wise family will say to itself: We will all be home at regular times, we will all eat together twice a day, and we will all be together in the living room at least once a day even if it isn t exciting, even if real feelings aren t shared, even if some are bored and even if some are protesting that this isn t worthwhile. We will do this because, if we don t, we will soon fall apart as a family. To stay together, we need regular, straight-forward, predictable daily rituals. We need the manna of daily presence to each other. Otherwise, we ll die. In the Eucharist, God sustains us in just this way. 2 Saint Anne Church June 22, 2014 stannebarrington.org

5 Faith Formation and Education This week s word provoked a considerable amount of thought, wondering about recent conversations with my son and what my words may have said to him. Hope is expressed in our words; it is also expressed in our attitudes toward life. Our children model our attitudes more than we may like to admit. Are we raising our children to be hopeful people? Do we imbue them with hope in all that God offers us? As we go through life, we will all at one time or another encounter adversity be it in the form of illness, loss, grief, financial hardship or a host of other challenges. We all handle these things differently. One commonality with those who fare better through difficulty is hope. God wants us to trust and hope in Him, and He always provide us with what we need to come through any situation. Opportunities to pass on our Catholic faith occur every day in a variety of ways; we just need to develop the habit of including God s word in those moments. Parenting is a journey filled with joys and challenges, pray for what you need; strength, courage, empathy, wisdom God will provide. 8 Faith Formation and Education GIFT COMMUNITY EVENTS What are Community Events? As parents, we may share concerns about our children s faith education and experience. Are they learning enough? Is there more that can be done? In truth, the more that we as adults practice our faith as part of our everyday lives within our church, our homes, our workplaces and the wider community, the stronger the faith of the next generation will be. Faith formation and education is all of our responsibility not just the parish and not just the community all of us together. This approach allows each of us, as individuals and households, to participate in practicing and forming our faith together with the support of the entire parish community. We behave in this way in our wider community with parents and other adults in the role of coach, scout leader and tutor; children and teens act as school buddies, peer advisors and camp counselors. We teach, support and encourage each other in so many ways outside of our faith lives, why not employ these same principles in our faith lives? Community Events bring people of all ages and life stages together to learn and share their faith. By connecting the generations, adults have the opportunity to learn and share with each other while also being role models for their children. Children learn to integrate faith formation and their parish community into their lives as their customary way of practicing their faith. Community Event participation complements other GIFT Faith Formation offerings by providing a well-rounded approach to learning and living our faith lives. Community Events begin with a meal, dinner or breakfast, followed by an opening prayer and introduction to the event topic. The core learning portion of the event occurs in a variety of ways, although it is typically by age group or by households together. After the core learning concludes, participants come together for an activity and then a closing prayer. The more that we as adults practice our faith as part of our everyday lives within our church, our homes, our workplaces and the wider community, the stronger the faith of the next generation will be. Faith formation and education is all of our responsibility not just the parish and not just the community all of us together. Adults, teens and children of all ages, including preschool - register for Community Events to learn and share your faith with others in our parish community. Find registration forms and information for all GIFT Faith Formation programs on the Saint Anne website or call the GIFT Faith Formation Office at As individuals, couples and families, when we experience and share our faith together as community we are all richer for the experience! 8 Saint Anne Church June 22, 2014 stannebarrington.org

11 Saint Anne Catholic Community LOOKING FOR A COUNSELOR? A HEALING MINISTRY From our Alexian Partnership It s no secret that today s world can be pretty overwhelming at times. There are few among us who can claim that life is always easy. For most of us, there are obstacles to overcome and challenges to face on a daily basis. And, most of the time, we find solutions. However, there are times when our best efforts are simply not enough. It s part of the human condition. In those situations, where do we turn? How do we resolve the conflict or problem? Where do we start? Many people turn to the Church for guidance and support. We are expanding our partnership with Alexian Brothers Parish Services (ABPS). ABPS has been providing us School Counseling services by providing us Mrs. Sasa Mo. Our parish will become the eighth satellite location where counseling services are offered. Parishioners of Saint Anne are especially fortunate to have a professional counseling staff come right here at our church. The services offered by this group bring an added dimension to the therapeutic process. They offer a holistic approach to counseling involving the interrelationship between mind, body and spirit. It differs from a secular approach in that therapy may be combined with spirituality and prayer. They partner with Saint Anne in supporting the mission of healing. They offer individual counseling, marital and family counseling. The Alexian Brothers Interfaith Counseling Services offers a valuable service to our parish community. 12 Sharing the Living Story BY CLEM ASERON (A) Lectionary texts: (B) Bible texts (has verse #): THE SOLEMNITY OF THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST, 2014 (167A) 1st Reading: Deuteronomy 8:2-3, 14b-16a Responsorial Psalm: Ps 147:12-13, 14-15, RX = Praise the Lord, Jerusalem. 2nd Reading: 1 Corinthians 10:16-17 Gospel: John 6:51-58 The gospel pericope 1 is from a portion of chapter 6 known as the Bread of Life Discourse in which John points to Jesus self-description as life-giving food and drink (v.55, see B, in header above) and not simply as the source of this food nor the dispenser of this food. Further, John says, the feeding that Jesus offers is spiritual and forever (v.54) and not just physical and temporal because it is enduring (v.56). Compare with today s Hebrew scripture from Deuteronomy in which Moses reminds the people that when they were in the wilderness and had nothing, that actually they lacked nothing. When they were most helpless, God cared for them by feeding them with manna (v.3, 16), watering them (v.15c), leading them (v.2b, 15a), thus liberating them from bondage (v.14b). God sustained them beyond the physical. 2 Today, we readily identify vv.51 and 53 with Eucharist. John s audience certainly made this connection for by this time, they were celebrating the Lord s Supper. Usually, I very deliberately ask you to identify with the specific audience whom the Gospel writer had in mind! However, it is useful to stay with the image of Jesus as he addresses the crowds in order for us to look beyond the Host, beyond receiving Jesus in the sacrament of the altar. Given their religious mind-set (nurtured by Hebrew scripture!), at v.52, Jesus audience certainly did not identify with Eucharist (e.g., see above comment re: Deuteronomy). Quast 3 says that John uses references to sacrament in the sign 4 and in the discourse that surrounds it, 5 to make the Eucharist itself point to truths concerning the Christ and [to point to] faith in him. For background, we turn to Isaiah and the Wisdom type of literature of the Hebrew scripture. (Read the short texts cited B in header above) In the beautiful poetic chapter 55 of Isaiah, God invites people to eat and drink of that which satisfies; in vv.10-11, God s word is referred to as though it was rain coming down from heaven, watering the earth and making it fertile and fruitful, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater; further, God says, so shall my word be that goes forth from my mouth, it shall not return to my void, but shall do my will, achieving the end for which I sent it. John s Jesus invites people to eat and drink at vv. 51, 53 and 35; compare this with Proverbs 9:5, (Come, eat of my food, and drink of the wine I have mixed); compare as well with Sirach 15:3 and 24:21. Jesus audience, therefore, may have likely understood the bread of life as God s life-giving word. Quast continues: phagein, the usual Greek verb for eating, is used throughout chapter 6 except at v.56 where it is trogein, used about animals to mean munch or chew. (Recall how we say today: Let me give you something to chew on.) The picture is graphic. Christ will be in a total, intimate, involved relationship with us. Moreover, it is to be an ongoing, abiding relationship: Whoever eats [chews] my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them (v.56). In two short verses, Paul emphasizes and deepens this sense of intimacy. Breaking bread and sharing the cup is participation in the body of Christ, involvement in the blood of Christ. Feeding, then, is sharing in the life-giving body and blood of Christ. It is an act of unity: Because the loaf of bread is one, we, though many, are one body; we are the Body of Christ. Note the remarkably good integration of the meaning of this feast across all four scriptures for this day. Praise the Lord, Jerusalem! 13 Sharing the Living Story The incarnation is God made flesh, God becoming human, God dwelling among us. Being fed by the body and blood of Christ is sharing in that very God made flesh; it is partaking in the kind of unity in which God stays with us, abides in us. Look once more beyond receiving the Host, and consider those who are absent from the table of the Lord. Some are not there because they don t know about it, some are not welcomed by us, some refrain for doctrinal reasons, some stay away through a sense of unworthiness, some do not feel invited, some are rejected, and some reject the idea. So What? Look beyond the Host how do we do the Christ s mandate to help to bring all under the Christ? Could it be by self-giving just as Jesus modeled for us even unto death? O.K., then how do we do self-giving? Maybe recall the words at the end of the consecration of bread and wine... the words are: Do this in memory of me. What is it that we are to do in memory of him? The words preceding are: Take this and eat of it, for this is my Body, which will be given up for you. And, Take this and drink from it, for this the chalice of my Blood which will be poured out for you If we eat the Body and drink the Blood, do become what we eat, that is, do we become Bread broken and Blood poured out? 1 Pericope: a biblical passage integrated among the three or four selected for the Lectionary (the set of readings for a given day of the liturgical year). A passage might be modified by the omission of verses, e.g. see the discontinuity in Reading I which begins with v.2, omits 4 though 13, resumes with part b of verse 14 and ends with part a of v.16; by the addition of words, e.g. the words Brothers and sisters are added before v.16 in Reading II; similarly in the gospel pericope, the words Jesus said to the Jewish crowds: are added before v v.3, fed you with manna a food unknown to show you that not by bread alone does one live, but by every word that comes forth from the mouth of the LORD. Compare to Jesus reply in Christian scripture when his disciples urge him to eat at John 4:32. 3 Reading the Gospel of John, Kevin Quast, p v.51: I am the living bread; but note also v.35, I am the bread of life. 5 See especially that part of the discourse at verses Saint Anne Church June 22, 2014 stannebarrington.org 13

We look forward to sharing these celebrations with those who, in some way, are part of our community. Therefore, please note the following: Visitation of the Sick: If you or a family member are in a local hospital or are homebound and would like a visit from a minister of care or a priest, call Mary Hoffing at Baptism: Our Baptism ministry is pleased to help your family prepare for the special event of your child s entrance into our faith community. Two Baptism sessions are required for parents baptizing their 1st child Parents who have had a Baptism at another Catholic Church and are now wanting to baptize a child at Saint Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before scheduling Baptism Parents who have already attended Baptism preparation at Saint Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before scheduling Baptism Information for setting a Baptism date will be given at the meeting or at the time of the interview. Please call the parish office at where all scheduling is done. Marriage: To be married at Saint Anne, your preparation process should begin 7 months to one year prior to your wedding date. Please call the parish office to secure a date as soon as possible. Membership at Saint Anne is not a requirement. We look forward to helping you during this time of engagement and preparation for the vocation of Christian marriage. First Eucharist and First Reconciliation: These sacraments are typically celebrated in second grade. Candidates must be registered parishioners and complete the two-year preparation program. Please call the GIFT office at with questions. Confirmation: This sacrament is celebrated in high school. Candidates must be registered parishioners and complete the two-year preparation program. Please call Reconciliation: Saturdays 9:15 a.m. until all are heard or by appointment. Registration: To enter into our faith community, please attend an information/registration session at 9:30 a.m. in the Hospitality Room, followed by the 11:00 a.m. Mass, on the 1st Sunday of the month.
