2 Wellstreams Living Waters for the Journey in Faith By Sister Lauretta Leipzig GOD CARES In our raging storms of life, we often take the words out of the mouths of the disciples who cried out to Jesus in the boat, Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing? As we face personal tragedies and are plagued with global crisis, we might feel that Jesus is asleep on the job and doesn t care about us. Where is God when I need help, when I am lost, when I can t find my way alone? Could God possibly know what I have to suffer? Does God really care about me? Isn t it true that we sometimes find ourselves tempted to ask these questions in times of challenge and pain? Of course, the answer is: God does care he cares very much! In the face of all life s struggles, our faith declares that God is concerned for our welfare, does care for each one of us. We are part of God s created world and, though we have a very small, seemingly insignificant place in that world, it is astonishing to see that God knows our most intimate needs and provides for us as would a loving Mother or Father. Throughout scripture, we see that God is interested in more than the highlights of peoples lives. God cares even about the little things because everything is little compared to God. God s heart is always with us. This is one of the great truths that God has been striving through all the generations to have us believe. The greatest stranger who sees a person who is suffering, is in pain or distress, displays a care-filled concern for him or her and shows interest in helping that person. We see this in such calamities as an earthquake destruction, a volcanic eruption that buries hundreds of people, miners in an explosion tragedy or victims of flooding and bombing attacks. Our news media brings those tragedies into our homes and immediately, a wave of pain sweeps over us and the world responds. Human hearts are sensitive to every shade of need and experience in others. We care about each other! Then we need to ask: Is God less compassionate, does he care less than we do? So we must believe that God does care for the world. But does God recognize the individual in the crowd? We tend to think that all things in creation are planned for the good of the race but only for humanity as a whole. There is day and night, seasons of the year, cold and heat, winds and tides and all the changes which bring health, comfort and fruitfulness bestowed graciously on creation as a whole. God s blessings appear to be the same for the weak and the strong, the sick and the well, the broken-hearted and the happy. Yes, God certainly is good to all, but what about each individual? The Psalmist prayed: I am poor and needy yet the Lord thinks of me! There s wonderful assurance in these words. For each individual person in this great world of millions whether well off, poor, needy, someone without friends or help or family he or she can say: The Lord thinks of me! On every page, scripture tells us this truth about God. A brother is slain by a brother and God cared! A woman is in distress because she has been cast out and God cared! Each prophet laid down his life to carry out God s will among the people and God cared! Christ taught the same truth. He told his disciples that God is so solicitous; he takes care of the grass and the lilies and even finds time to feed the birds. He told them the very hairs of their heads were all numbered because God personally cares for all the minutest affairs of our lives. And recall that the Good Shepherd calls his sheep by name each one by name!! St. Paul s writings expressed the strong belief that Christ loved him and gave himself up for him personally. He believed that God s love for him and for each one of his children is so deep, so personal, so tender that he has compassion on our every pain, every distress, every struggle. The major theme of Scripture is God s great love for us. One of the most meaningful verses in Scripture that perfectly captures the truth of God s caring heart is found in Zephaniah who says: The Lord your God is with you. He is mighty to deliver. He takes great delight in you. He will quiet you with his love. He rejoices over you with singing! How much more can one care? Over and over, God tells us he sent Jesus to heal broken hearts, to show his love and care for each one of us. Someone once wrote: Even if no one in all the world cares God cares for you! What a marvelous treasure and strength! Let us live with belief in these words. 2 Saint Anne Church August 13, 2017 stannebarrington.org

4 Worship LITURGY CORNER By Rory Cooney SUMMARY 2: A SECOND FRAMEWORK 4 RITES, 4 WORDS Last week, I offered a summary of our survey of the Mass with a set of pointers during the liturgy, that is, actions and words that point toward a deeper meaning and might invite us to pay closer attention to what we are doing on Sunday and whenever we celebrate together. Today, I want to offer another summary of the structure and meaning of our gathering in four words that suggest the four rites: Gathering (the Introductory Rites), Word (the Liturgy of the Word), Table (the Liturgy of the Eucharist) and Sending (the Dismissal Rite). I will treat them in two groupings: Word and Table, to unify the two central rites and Gathering and Sending, to unify the two minor, but still meaningful, rites. Word and Table: The Table of the Word and the Eucharistic table are aspects of a single reality. The word of God is living and effective, it goes out from God and does not return until it has accomplished what it was sent to do. Ultimately, the word of God is Jesus, the full self-expression of God incarnate as a human being. The God of both the old covenant (testament) and the new covenant in the blood of Christ is the same God. The God who fed the Hebrews with manna in the desert is the God who, in Christ, fed the multitudes, broke bread with sinners and shared a meal with his disciples on the night before he died. The God of both covenants feeds his people not because his people are good but because God is good. God doesn t feed people because we do good things. God feeds us like God sends the rain and sun, without regard for our goodness, but because God s nature is to do what is good for those God loves. If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask him! We proclaim the death of Jesus when we proclaim the gospel and share the meal as he did, as equals, as people committed to bringing the reign of God to the world without boundaries: no man nor woman, Jew nor Greek, slave nor free. We speak the word of God, we tell the truth, we live the truth out in our assembly, and then we live and speak the truth in the rest of our lives. We pray for the poor and then we feed them, to paraphrase Pope Francis. That s how prayer works. Gathering and Sending: The beginning and ending of every Eucharist are reminders that we come from the world and we go back to it. The Sunday assembly is a waystation on the journey of life, just as the Church in the world is on a continuum through time. We are called together by the Holy Spirit, the Spirit breathed into us in Baptism and Confirmation, given the mission of the Messiah (Christ) in his cross and resurrection to announce the reign of God in the world. Note that I say announce, not bring. God s reign is already here. Getting to it is a matter of turning around, changing our goal and values in order to see it and begin living in it. We have unusual faith in an unusual God. Most of the gods of earth look and act just like us. That s because we made them. But we are made in God s image. We come from love; we are meant for love. In God s reign, everyone belongs. There are no outsiders. There is no in-group and out-group everyone belongs in the family of God. Everyone is in, but they don t know it. They need to be told, shown the ropes, reassured that real life is not business as usual in the world but the life of belief in the reign of God. We are gathered we are sent. We are called together; we are pushed out toward others. We are part of the inner life of God who is love, whose very life is always creatively expanding to affirm, nurture and be present to the other. Church is belonging and mission. In the great mystery of the Eucharist, we are called to this life every week, throughout our lives. We are partners in saving the world. Without God, we cannot do it. Without us, God will not do it. Let s get going. 4 Saint Anne Church August 13, 2017 stannebarrington.org

6 Faith Formation and Education REGISTER TODAY FOR FAITH FORMATION Tuesday, August 15th, is the deadline for Journey First Round Group Choice and Grades 1-5 Initial Group Placement Our middle school Journey program uses a small group format as the primary way participants gather to learn and grow their faith together. Through this small group format, teens are able to pray and share together as peer companions on the journey of life. As a faith community, it is important that we provide these opportunities for our youth in a way that truly reflects acceptance of all those who wish to participate through a format that enables and encourages active involvement on the part of all group members. All whose registration for Journey has been received in the Faith Formation office by Tuesday, August 15th, will be provided with the opportunity to choose their small group. Journey group sizes are limited, and choices will be accepted on a first-come basis with preference given to those wishing to return to a group they had been in the previous year. In fairness to all, any group preferences indicated on registration forms or communicated outside of the Group Choice process cannot be accepted. Specific details of the Journey group choice process will be sent to all registrants at the beginning of September via . All Journey registrations received after Tuesday, August 15th, will be provided with a choice of those groups in which space remains after the first round is completed. For children in grades 1-5 Children s Faith Formation, including First Reconciliation and First Eucharist preparation, initial group placements will occur for those who have registered by Tuesday, August 15th. Registrations received after Tuesday, August 15th will be placed as we are able, which may not be prior to the beginning of sessions in September. As always, we will do everything possible to accommodate all registrants. Registration information and forms are available on the Saint Anne website see Faith Formation & Education then Faith Formation Overview & Registration. Questions? Call the Faith Formation Office at As individuals, couples and families, when we experience and share our faith together as community, we are all richer for the experience! 6 Saint Anne Church August 13, 2017 stannebarrington.org

13 Community Life YOU CAN BE THE INSPIRATION! LAFARGE LIFELONG LEARNING For decades, Saint Anneʹs Lafarge Lifelong Learning has provided area seniors with continued learning opportunities close to home, challenging them to learn new skills and explore new areas of interest in a relaxed, social setting. The program has been recognized for its significant contributions to the quality of senior life in our community by the Barrington Area Community Foundation. Our long-time Program Coordinator and Technology Instructor, Mike Konie, is moving, and we are seeking individuals to carry the program forward. Instructors are needed to teach computer skills (set up, basic troubleshooting, Microsoft Office programs, etc.), Internet tips, tools and iphone technology. Instructors are also needed to expand course offerings in other areas of interest to seniors music, movies, travel, history, genealogy you name it! Finally, a Lafarge Program Coordinator is needed to establish course schedules, coordinate instructors and manage registrations throughout the year. No prior experience is required Mike will gladly train and provide all the details. This is a wonderful opportunity to volunteer and share your expertise with a very enthusiastic, receptive audience. Course fees cover costs of materials and supplies. Prior/current courses include: Digital Photography, Woodcarving, Watercolor Painting, iphone Basics, Microsoft Excel and Word, Internet Skills, Pottery and more. Most courses meet once per week for six weeks in the Parish Center. Courses are offered Fall through Spring. We need YOU to help our seniors stay active, engaged and enlightened. Be the inspiration! For more information, please Mike Konie at mjkonie@comcast.net. Saint Anne Catholic Community is fortunate to have more than 75 parishioners who are trained and mandated Ministers of Care by the Archdiocese of Chicago. They bring the Eucharist to ten sites in the Barrington community, including hospital, hospice and senior residential facilities. Interested parishioners are invited to join this ministry. The flexible scheduling and time requirement works well for retired parishioners, STAGG members who have time on weekends or moms who have time in the mornings while children are in school. The Autumn 2017 Training for New Ministers of Care will be held at Holy Family, 2515 West Palatine Road, Inverness, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., on Saturday, September 9th and Saturday, September 16th. If you are interested, please contact Mary Ellen Johnston, Director, Care Ministries, at or mejohnston@stannebarrington.org to meet and talk about the ministry. The deadline to register for this two-day class is Friday, September 1st. Saint Anne Church August 13, 2017 stannebarrington.org 13

We look forward to sharing these celebrations with those who, in some way, are part of our community. Therefore, please note the following: Visitation of the Sick: If you or a family member are in a local hospital or are homebound and would like a visit from a minister of care or a priest, call Mary Ellen Johnston at Baptism: Our Baptism ministry is pleased to help your family prepare for the special event of your child s entrance into our faith community. Two Baptism sessions are required for parents baptizing their 1st child Parents who have had a Baptism at another Catholic Church and are now wanting to baptize a child at Saint Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before scheduling Baptism Parents who have already attended Baptism preparation at Saint Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before scheduling Baptism Information for setting a Baptism date will be given at the meeting or at the time of the interview. Call the parish office at Marriage: To be married at Saint Anne, the preparation process should begin 7 months to one year prior to the wedding date. Please call the parish office to secure a date as soon as possible. Membership at Saint Anne is not a requirement. We look forward to helping you during this time of preparation for the vocation of Christian marriage. First Eucharist and First Reconciliation: These sacraments are typically celebrated in second grade. Candidates must be registered parishioners and complete the two-year preparation program. For more information, call the Faith Formation and Education office at Confirmation: This sacrament is celebrated in high school. Candidates must be registered parishioners and complete the two-year preparation program. For more information, call the PATHS office at Reconciliation: Saturdays, 9:15 a.m. until all are heard or by appointment. Adult Christian Initiation: If you are looking for a place to belong or a church community to share questions and beliefs, perhaps you would like to find out more about what it means to be a Catholic Christian. Saint Anne would be delighted and honored to share the gift of faith and fellowship with you. Call Michael Beard at for information regarding the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults). Registration: To enter into our faith community, please attend an information/registration session at 9:30 a.m. in the Hospitality Room, followed by the 11:00 a.m. Mass on the 1st Sunday of the month, except on holiday weekends when there are no sessions.
