2 Dear People of Saint Anne, I hope that you all have enjoyed a happy and healthy summer. We have been busy making plans for the lengthy list of campus projects supported by the Legacy of Faith Campaign that I described earlier in the summer. I want to take this opportunity to give you an update on our progress, as well as give you a schedule of the work to be done over the next several weeks. With school starting soon, we want to be sure that everyone is aware of which areas to avoid. As promised, we approached these projects with the same prudent financial management practices that have provided the foundation for Saint Anne s growth and fiscal stability. For each project, we evaluated several potential service providers and, with respect to the larger projects, consulted experts at the Archdiocese of Chicago. Once we had the funds in hand, we scheduled the work to be done. Of course, we will incur no debt as part of these projects, nor any future projects supported by the Legacy of Faith Campaign. PROJECT DESCRIPTION START DATE FINISH DATE UPDATE Repair baptismal font in Complete! church Repair rose windows in the church Repair school roof parapet walls above the windows Complete! Replace chapel roof Late August Mid-September Asphalt pavement throughout campus Repair stonework outside the chapel, church and school Replace carpet in Church, including stairs up to 2nd level, Family Room and Hospitality Room Wednesday, August 30th Friday, August 4th September Friday, September 1st Friday, September 22nd September Complete! We encourage you to take a look at them the next time you attend Mass! After an extensive review of potential bidders and discussions with the Archdiocese, this work will begin the last week of August on the Franklin Street side of the Church and will be completed in 2-3 weeks. Following a review of the campus, possible service providers and suggestions from the Archdiocese, work will commence on the large parking lot on Franklin Street, the teachers parking lot behind School and the circle drive in front of the Church. Work on the remaining paved areas will follow this fall. As you have seen from the equipment outside the Chapel and the Church, this work has been going on for several weeks. It will be completed later in September. We are reviewing potential service providers for this project, as well as carpet durability and style choices. Once begun, this project will be completed in 2 weeks with minimal disruption to events scheduled in those areas. Repair Church front doors September September We are reviewing potential service providers for this project. We are excited by the progress that we have made and know that you will be as well. We ask you to please exercise caution around the work areas, observing signs and tape cordoning off work zones. School families will receive s from the School with relevant information about the schedule. If you have any questions, please contact the Parish Office at As you each fulfill your pledge, I feel confident that we will be able to complete all of the projects we envisioned in the plans for Legacy of Faith Campaign in a timely manner. I encourage you to consult the Legacy of Faith Campaign section of our website from time to time for further progress reports, as well as answers to frequently asked questions (FAQ) that we receive. See stannebarrington.org/legacyoffaith. If you would like to make a pledge to Legacy of Faith Campaign or have any other questions, please contact Andrea Wirt, Campaign Coordinator, at LegacyofFaith@stannebarrington.org or Sincerely, Father Bernie Pietrzak Pastor 2 Saint Anne Church August 20, 2017 stannebarrington.org

This hymn in stone has served as a beacon of our faith to the nearly 1 million who visit it each year and to the millions more who visit and work in our nation s capital. Mary s Shrine, as it is often called, is the largest Roman Catholic Church in North America and one of the ten largest churches in the world. Yet, 97 years after the laying of its foundation stone in 1920, it remains unfinished. This year, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has asked our help funding the completion of the Trinity Dome, the last remaining Shrine construction project. This Crowning Jewel will be adorned in mosaic and will depict the Most Holy Trinity, the Blessed Virgin Mary as the Immaculate Conception and a procession of saints who have an association with America and the Basilica. More information on this project can be found at trinitydome.org and/or nationalshrine.org. We have agreed to do our part in making this project a success. Our goal is to raise $600, to honor the Blessed Mother by completing her Shrine and signifying to all who see it that our country and its people are grateful for her many graces. Thank you in advance for your active support of this initiative. You and your families continue to be in my prayers, and I ask that you not forget to pray for me. With every good wish I remain, Sincerely yours in Christ, Cardinal Blase J. Cupich Archbishop of Chicago * Envelopes will be available in the Gathering Space next weekend for donations to this project. Saint Anne Church August 20, 2017 stannebarrington.org 3

16 Sharing the Living Story By Clem Aseron (A) Lectionary texts: (B) Bible texts (has verse #): TWENTIETH SUNDAY OF THE YEAR, 2017 (118A) First Reading: Isaiah 56:1, 6-7 Responsorial Psalm: 67:2-3, 5, 6, 8 RX = O God, let all the nations praise you! Second Reading: Romans 11:13-15, Gospel: Matthew 15:21-28 Please refer to (A) and (B) above when I cite verses in the commentary below. This is the third Sunday in which the readings describe signs of God s kingdom. I had before suggested the first two Sundays might be called: Jesus Feeds the Multitudes (18th Sunday of the Year) and Jesus Rescues His Own (19th Sunday). Today, it is Jesus Rescues Two Not His Own. As often occurs, the refrain to the Responsorial Psalm is key in seeing the relationship among the readings: O God, let all the nations praise you! Note the use of the plural of nation, and in its verses, the use of the plural of people. Recall that for those who called sacred the Hebrew Scriptures, that the nation and the people were the Chosen Ones, the insiders, who well understood that the prophets were referring to pagans, outsiders when they spoke of nations and peoples. The clear lesson in all four scriptures today is that God invites all humankind into intimate relationship into God s kingdom. Matthew uses for his gospel this story written earlier by Mark (65-70 CE) 1 but shifts the focus of Mark 7:24 from only a healing to a fuller narrative-dialogue that reveals the tension that existed in his own community around 85 CE, some fifteen years after the razing of the Temple and the subsequent ouster from it of the Judean (Jewish) Christians, now the new outsiders. Recall that Matthew writes to a cosmopolitan, urban church in Antioch of Syria whose members are both Judean (Jewish) and Gentile followers of Jesus. The question in the Matthew community is about the positions of Judean and Gentile in God s plan of salvation. The miraculous healing of the woman s daughter provides the backdrop out of which Matthew answers them (us!) at v.28 by quoting Jesus as saying to the pagan woman, an outsider, a member of the non-chosen: O woman, great is your faith! (great is your solidarity with me!) How does the Matthew community hear this? Do the Gentiles rejoice and the Judeans recoil when they hear Jesus affirm as acceptable this Canaanite woman s claim to solidarity with the God of Israel? At v.21, Jesus withdraws to Tyre and Sidon, pagan territory. Note that this is inconsistent with Jesus directive to the Twelve at 10:5 about confining their mission to the lost sheep of Israel (and also confirmed here, at v.24 and 26). Recall this: she is a woman, she is alone, she is a pagan, and she has violated religious, ethnic and geographic 2 boundaries; she dares to address a non-related male. Note how she addresses him: three times, she calls him Lord; only Christians those who believe that Jesus is the promised One use the title, Lord. This pagan woman even calls him Son of David an effrontery to Matthew s Judean (Jewish) Christians. On the other hand, only the Judean Christians in the community have it in their bones that Jesus is descended from David; she has crossed every cultural barrier. There is tension in the Judean mindset in the Matthew community. In their scripture, there is on the one hand, the universal vision reflected in Isaiah chapters Israel is to be a light to the nations all the ends of the earth are to turn to the God of Israel to be saved God s justice will go forth as a light to the peoples. On the other hand, in Ezra (Chapters 9 and 10) and Nehemiah (10:30, 13:23), for example, there is unmistakable exclusiveness: there is to be NO involvement with the Gentiles, especially no intermarriage. There is tension as well for the Gentiles in Matthew s community. Are they themselves acceptable or not? This story provides the way; it is a bridge. The God of Israel is approachable through Israel as well as through her 16 Saint Anne Church August 20, 2017 stannebarrington.org

17 Sharing the Living Story Messiah. So, Gentiles come to seek the Lord of hosts in Jerusalem: (See how Zechariah 8:20 draws beautifully on Isaiah 2:2 ten men from the nations of every tongue will take hold of the robe of the Jew saying, Let us go with you, for we have heard that God is with you. ) There is room for both Judean and Gentile in Matthew s community: The one true God, the God of Israel, is approachable through Jesus, the Jew. And, in the dialogue with the woman, Jesus admits there is place at the banquet in God s kingdom for the Gentile: the children s food (that destined for the children of Israel) is/can be eaten by dogs (a pejorative for gentiles). The pagan woman s prayer is honored on the basis of her faith, that is, her loyalty to or solidarity with, Jesus. This is the very criterion by which Gentiles (that s us!) become part of the Christian community. O God, let all the nations praise you! Inclusion is also highlighted in the other two readings. In the Isaiah pericope, at this point in their history, the Israelites have returned from the Babylonian Exile to rebuild the lands from which they had been dispersed. Among the returning are the very foreigners among whom they had been exiled; the pagans whose gods were not to be worshipped had married into the Israelite clans. Would it not be easier to assemble The Chosen, especially around worship, by excluding those foreigners who had led them astray? Who is it then that the Lord brings to his holy mountain? God makes the distinction, not on the basis of birth or circumstances or even religion but on whether those would join themselves to him by holding fast to Covenant ideals (v.6). Then, at v.7, My house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples. In the Paul pericope 3, both Gentile and Judean are taken to task for being disobedient. But both are given mercy! And the hope is that the remaining Judean rejection of Jesus as the Messiah will one day be reversed. For Paul s gentile community, the hope is that they will remain open to accepting the Judeans. Note that Paul summarizes about both groups when he says: For God delivered all to disobedience, that he might have mercy upon all. O God, let all the nations praise you! So What? What kind of God is it who is revealed in all four of these passages? Out of your own experiences, perhaps describe to your son, daughter or grandchildren such a loving God who moved in such an inclusive way. Some people may ask: are we not to keep anybody out? Some are asking: not even Muslims? Or Mexicans, Hispanics? 1 CE = Common Era, formerly AD 2 The boundary between pagan lands and the Promised Land God s land given to Israel by God is guarded zealously. 3 Pericope = a biblical passage integrated among the three or four selected for the Lectionary (the set of scriptures for a given day of the liturgical year). A passage might be modified by the omission of verses, e.g., today, the first three pericopes have discontinuous verses; by the addition of words, e.g. the words Brothers and sisters are added before v.13 in Reading II; by changing words slightly to render the passage more sensible, e.g., the biblical text at Matthew 15:21, Then Jesus went from that place and withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon was modified as shown in the pericope. We look forward to sharing these celebrations with those who, in some way, are part of our community. Therefore, please note the following: Visitation of the Sick: If you or a family member are in a local hospital or are homebound and would like a visit from a minister of care or a priest, call Mary Ellen Johnston at Baptism: Our Baptism ministry is pleased to help your family prepare for the special event of your child s entrance into our faith community. Two Baptism sessions are required for parents baptizing their 1st child Parents who have had a Baptism at another Catholic Church and are now wanting to baptize a child at Saint Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before scheduling Baptism Parents who have already attended Baptism preparation at Saint Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before scheduling Baptism Information for setting a Baptism date will be given at the meeting or at the time of the interview. Call the parish office at Marriage: To be married at Saint Anne, the preparation process should begin 7 months to one year prior to the wedding date. Please call the parish office to secure a date as soon as possible. Membership at Saint Anne is not a requirement. We look forward to helping you during this time of preparation for the vocation of Christian marriage. First Eucharist and First Reconciliation: These sacraments are typically celebrated in second grade. Candidates must be registered parishioners and complete the two-year preparation program. For more information, call the Faith Formation and Education office at Confirmation: This sacrament is celebrated in high school. Candidates must be registered parishioners and complete the two-year preparation program. For more information, call the PATHS office at Reconciliation: Saturdays, 9:15 a.m. until all are heard or by appointment. Adult Christian Initiation: If you are looking for a place to belong or a church community to share questions and beliefs, perhaps you would like to find out more about what it means to be a Catholic Christian. Saint Anne would be delighted and honored to share the gift of faith and fellowship with you. Call Michael Beard at for information regarding the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults). Registration: To enter into our faith community, please attend an information/registration session at 9:30 a.m. in the Hospitality Room, followed by the 11:00 a.m. Mass on the 1st Sunday of the month, except on holiday weekends when there are no sessions.
