FATHER JOJI THANUGUNDLA ASSOCIATE PASTOR As Jesus invites us to go into the world two by two, I always literally think about my brother priest Fr. Jerome. We are two priests in our family, working for God s Kingdom in different places. My brother is a great inspiration to me as he works among the poorest of the poor in South India. He takes care of orphans, helps widows and widowers and reaches out to many special needs children and their families. Presently, he is the pastor at Saint Thomas Parish in the town of Warangal. I am glad he was able to visit us for two weeks. I hope you all had a chance to see him. It is just over two years that I have been serving here at Saint Anne Catholic Community. In this short time, I have learned so much about the Parish and the various ministries and organizations. I have gotten to know so many of you as I minister and serve. Presiding at the liturgies on the weekends and weekdays, I see the true joy of knowing you and being with you. I also have experienced many joyful moments at baptisms and weddings and other celebrations. I have been blessed to journey with you in sad times, such as comforting the sick and presiding at funerals and wake services. Visiting the school children almost every day (sometimes twice) and greeting the Faith Formation students, I find the joy of being connected with children and their families. Besides these daily activities, I also serve on the Human Concern Commission. This commission exists to guide the ministries of Saint Anne Parish that provide spiritual and material support to all God s people. The Human Concerns Commission is divided into four areas of focus: Pastoral Care, Faith Justice, Project Hope and the Sharing Board. I attend these meetings and offer spiritual support and guidance as needed. It is such an amazing experience to see the amount of work being done by the members in this commission. They are very dedicated and passionate about the mission of the church and give their time to live the Gospel by involving actively in reaching out to others. This commission and the different branches are a bigger part of Saint Anne Catholic Community. We are one community embracing the total welfare of all individuals, and we reach out to those in need. While we live in a particular geographical setting, we are part of the Archdiocese of Chicago and part of the universal church. We exist to serve the world, bringing the Gospel of Christ and the mission of the church to serve those marginalized and less fortunate. I have learned a great deal from the many discussions and meetings I have attended. I hope to continue to serve and minister to you to the best of my abilities. I am constantly thankful to God for the opportunity to be here. Thank you for your loving support and for embracing me to be part of this community. It was great pleasure having my brother Fr. Jerome visiting for couple of weeks. Thank you for welcoming him and extending Saint Anne hospitality. I will be going home to see my mom for three weeks from Sunday, July 15th until Wednesday, August 8th. Enjoy the summer time, and let us pray for each other and for our community of Saint Anne and for the world. Sincerely, Fr. Joji Thanugundla 2 Saint Anne Church July 15, 2018 stannebarrington.org

The speaker will be Sister Theresia Martin Hhayuma from Tanzania. Please read below the information we have received about her. I was born in the Arusha region, in the Northern part of Tanzania. I have ten siblings six brothers and 4 sisters. What is interesting about my family is that five of us joined religious life and five live secular lives. Thus, in my family there are two priests and three religious nuns. I am a certified social worker, and I have worked in one of the senior citizens facilities in New Jersey since 2012, where I assist seniors who live independently. I enjoy this profession because it is very rewarding helping senior citizens by linking them to different resources for whatever service they need. I completed my B.A. in Social Work at Rutgers University, in Newark, New Jersey. Currently, I am perusing my Masters Degree in Social Work at Creighton University, in Omaha, Nebraska. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to share about the Congregation of the Daughters of Mary-Tabora and their ministries in Tanzania. 4 Worship LITURGY CORNER By Rory Cooney SINGING THE FAITH: SCRAM! THE MASS HAS ENDED! (adapted from my blog post, Being sent, accepted, and rejected ) Itʹs a weird ritual, but itʹs the one we go through at least once a week and keep coming back for more. Itʹs a ritual that gathers us in the name of a God who is revealed in the public execution of a teacher and healer who rose from the dead, wherein we gather to praise the God who sent him and revealed self to us through him; we listen to stories millennia old from cultures and languages oceans away, we gather around bread and wine to ask Godʹs Holy Spirit to transform them and us into what we most truly are were meant to be and then, we hear those joyful words: Get out of here. Mass is over. Make something of your lives. Well, weʹve got the poetry to disguise the urgency and terseness of that sentiment. We take the edge off of it, some of us do, by singing a rousing song while some people are obediently making their way to the exits, and we massage each otherʹs bruised egos when they donʹt seem to value the music as much as we do. But, hey. The guy in the fancy get-up said ʺGo.ʺ Who are you gonna believe? Ite, the plural Latin imperative of the verb ire, ʺto go,ʺ is pretty strong. The way ancient Romans generally said ʺgoodbyeʺ was Vale (pl. valete) which is more like ʺ be well, go in good health.ʺ But the liturgy doesnʹt seem to have time for those niceties. Instead, it just says ʺGo - Be gone! Get out of here. Shoo!ʺ just in case weʹve started liking the apparent homogeneity inside the building too much. Get out, the man says. ʺGo and announce the gospel of the Lord.ʺ Almost like Jesus does with the Twelve in todayʹs gospel. Jesus, at least, gives the apostles some instructions and a mild warning about the dangers awaiting out there. In fact, Markʹs gospel makes a larger point by telling this story in three ʺchapters,ʺ which, when taken together, ring an ominous bell. If todayʹs verses from Mark 6 are part one of that story, next weekʹs gospel, which tells the story of their breathless return to Jesus with tales of wonder about their first crack ministry (in pairs), is part three. The intervening verses, skipped in the Roman Catholic version of the lectionary but preserved in the Revised Common Lectionary used by other lectionary-based Christian assemblies, tell the story of the murder in prison of John the Baptizer by the tetrarch Herod Antipas. The story of Johnʹs death in Mark roughly parallels in detail the death of Jesus later. By any reading, the inclusio of this story, sandwiched between the missioning and return of the twelve, is a cautionary tale about the real price of faithful discipleship. Prophets, like Amos in today s first reading and like John the Baptist and Jesus and probably like the twelve, know that something is wrong in the land. God is just, and the way to make right what is wrong in the world is to remember who God is and what God wants. Amosʹs solution is a return from religion to justice. That is also Jesusʹs solution. But it doesnʹt take a prophet to know that something is wrong in the land. The prophet just has that extra ounce of courage to say it out loud and to give a voice to what we already know. The routine of civilization isnʹt working out for everyone! The question is, do we see the dissonance between our ʺalleluiasʺ and the policies, neglect and violence that we allow to undermine the hope of so many in the world, even in our own cities? Do we understand that Godʹs mission is liberation, a world whose people understand and act upon their fundamental equality and relationship as children of one divine householder? That salvation is the restoration to health, physical, emotional and spiritual, of every person? Is the church taking its Sunday meal with sandals on, staff in hand, ready to walk out with all hands and stand at the sea with an army at our back, until the waters part? The psalmist also sees the return of justice as the harbinger of peace, and both as signs of the Lordʹs favor in the present day. Godʹs promise is that a day will come when ʺkindness and truth shall meet, justice and peace shall kiss,ʺ a promise we remembered in today s responsorial psalm. The day is now. God is already here. What is lacking is our conviction and our moving forward. Which is why, I think, we need to pay attention to those words at the end of every Mass: Scram. Do some good with your lives. God has already left the building and is waiting outside. 4 Saint Anne Church July 15, 2018 stannebarrington.org

Human Concerns SAINT ANNE SHARING BOARD EXCITED WITH ANNOUNCEMENT OF FR. MARK BARTOSIC S APPOINTMENT TO AUXILIARY BISHOP The Sharing Board was excited to hear the news of Father Mark Bartosic s appointment as Auxiliary Bishop of Chicago by Pope Francis. While Fr. Mark was pastor at our sharing parish, St. Frances of Rome, in Cicero, we had a wonderful relationship that included many interactions between the school children and parishes. Those who had the opportunity to get to know Fr. Mark will attest to his dedication, service and life-long witness to the Gospel. He brought much energy and many ideas to St. Frances. We wish Fr. Mark the best in his new role. Saint Anne Church July 15, 2018 stannebarrington.org 5

Faith Formation and Education SPRED - COMMUNITIES OF FAITH, COMMUNITIES OF FRIENDS INCLUSION FOR PERSONS WITH DEVELOPMENTAL OR INTELLECTUAL CHALLENGES When Pope Francis visited America, he often left his motorcade or procession to reach out to a child with disabilities, hold that child and bless him or her. By words and example, the Pope calls us to extend the love and the care of Christ to the weakest among us, including those who have developmental disabilities. At Saint Anne, we respond to that call through our SPRED ministry, which welcomes young adults with developmental disabilities to develop a greater sense of God s love. If you feel inspired by the Pope s example, please consider joining the SPRED ministry. This is not a request to teach, it is an invitation to experience the peace and beauty of God s presence in our lives in a very unique way. We encourage both men and women to join us. Anyone over the age of 21 is eligible to become a volunteer Helper Catechist, and no experience with persons with disabilities is needed. We currently have a waiting list of young people who want to join Saint Anne SPRED, but cannot until we locate one-on-one Helper Catechists for them. As a Helper Catechist, you will not have to lead any lessons, but rather will form a relationship of friendship and inclusion with one of our young adults. ARE YOU INTERESTED IN LEARNING MORE? Please contact a member of our SPRED Leadership Team Joe Wolfe, Parish Chairman JoeWolfe7@gmail.com or Gail Foote, Leader Catechist efootes@aol.com 8 Saint Anne Church July 15, 2018 stannebarrington.org

Sharing the Living Story By Clem Aseron 15TH SUNDAY OF THE LITURGICAL YEAR 2018 (104B) First Reading: Amos 7:12-15 Responsorial Psalm 85:9-10, 11-12, RX = Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant us your salvation. Second Reading: Ephesians 1:3-14 Gospel: Mark 6:7-13 (A) Lectionary texts: (B) Bible texts (with verse #): Please refer to (A) and (B) above when I cite below the text of the Lectionary or the Bible. Today s gospel pericope is a continuation of last Sunday (Mark 6:1 6a) during which Mark had shown Jesus acquiring honor by winning the challenge posed at 6:2 by those who heard him dare to teach in the synagogue; they asked, where did this man get all this? 1 Mark shows the rejected but honorable 2 Jesus moving outside his home village: by going around to the villages in the vicinity teaching (6:6b). Recall also the call by Jesus (1:16ff.) to fishermen to become the first disciples, to leave fishing to become instead fishers of men 3 and that Jesus went up the mountain and summoned those whom he wanted and they came to him (3:13ff); the Twelve are thus called out, to be apart, to be with Jesus. Only then do they receive authority to go out to preach and to control evil spirits (3:14, 15). In today s pericope (6:7-13), Jesus again calls them out, gives them the specific mission of preaching and healing, then sends them out in pairs. Note that Jesus has moved the disciples upward in the cosmic social hierarchy by giving them authority over demons. 4 It is they who are now to go out and make a claim to honor by acting above their customary station. Compare the foregoing with the story in today s Hebrew Scripture (Amos 7:12-15) of the rejection of the prophet Amos by Amaziah, the priest of Bethel; note how Amos bests Amaziah s challenge with his riposte by claiming that it was the Lord who had called him out. Perhaps there is a similar claim to honor in the letter to the Ephesians (1:3-14); for example, compare the claims to honor in the first and fourth scriptures with the claims in the third scripture at v.13. The second scripture (v. the citation at Ps. 85 above) claims honor of the highest sort: I will hear what God proclaims; the Lord for he proclaims peace The Lord himself will give his benefits; our land shall yield its increase; what higher honor can there be than to invoke God? The newly authorized disciples are told to take only the barest of essentials, no provisions. This is a strange instruction to voice since in that culture, it would be a very shameless or display no regard for one s honor by denying hospitality to a stranger; it was the certain expectation that strangers would be cared for by someone. If Jesus emphasizes that they are to be completely dependent on the hospitality of the hosts, then it must be that it is God who will provide under all kinds of circumstances. 5 Note well here that when Mark describes how mission is to be undertaken, he uses many more words than when he focuses on the mission itself. This suggests that Mark is interested in telling his readers how one ought to behave on the way. 6 This behavior is not asceticism or piety; Jesus has previously rejected false piety at 2:18 ff. It is really about their attitude: missionaries are to be dependent upon God s provision. 7 Therefore, they are to remain wherever the preaching of the gospel is received and welcomed, however humble the accommodations. 8 Where they are refused hospitality and are not heard, they are to move on; but note their counter-challenge. 9 There is definitely 12 Saint Anne Church July 15, 2018 stannebarrington.org

Sharing the Living Story no overtone of conquest or domination here! It is, as God always is, invitational, not coercive. Apparently, following Jesus means something aside from being pious. The Twelve, after all, were sent out! So What? What about us most of us don t have church jobs like the staff, or are called to be catechists, or are part of the ordained, called apart and then sent forth like the first apostles, or are called apart and blessed to become celibates dedicated to mission. As members of The Way, yes, as disciples, have we ever felt that Jesus has summoned us; how did we respond? 1 Where did this man get this ability to heal and preach prophetically? He is, after all, one of our very own, the son of Mary, so we know his lineage well; he s challenging us by stepping beyond his station of a carpenter. 2 Jesus wins the game of challenge/riposte at v.4 3 Fishers of men: a metaphor for mission told in a context that Simon and companions understood well and which would have also made sense to Mark s readers. 4 See my notes on the12th Sunday. Each level of the following could control the ones beneath: Our God, the Most High God Other Gods, or sons of God,* or archangels Non-human persons like angels, spirits, demons (unclean spirits) Humans Creatures lower than humans (* At 3:17, Jesus names James and John, Boanerges, which means Sons of Thunder. To the Judean sensibility, thunder always accompanied theophanies.) 5 Compare feeding of the 5,000 at v.34ff. and feeding of the 4,000 at 8:1ff 6 The Way, that is, the way of the Lord, see Mk. 12:14 or Acts 9:2 7 Remaining faithful, i.e., in solidarity with God. If humans insist, of course, God will not contravene human will. 8 To seek better accommodations would dishonor the initial host! 9 The act of shaking dust from one s feet, done publicly, is a great insult and a high challenge to the honor of the people of the town in which the dust is found. It signifies total rejection, an unwillingness to be touched even by the most insignificant thing that might have touched the people of that village. Judean (Jews), upon their return from travel in foreign lands (Samaria or gentile territories), would shake the dust from their feet. We look forward to sharing these celebrations with those who, in some way, are part of our community. Therefore, please note the following: Visitation of the Sick: If you or a family member are in a local hospital or are homebound and would like a visit from a minister of care or a priest, call Mary Ellen Johnston at Baptism: Our Baptism ministry is pleased to help your family prepare for the special event of your child s entrance into our faith community. Two Baptism sessions are required for parents baptizing their 1st child Parents who have had a Baptism at another Catholic Church and are now wanting to baptize a child at Saint Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before scheduling Baptism Parents who have already attended Baptism preparation at Saint Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before scheduling Baptism Information for setting a Baptism date will be given at the meeting or at the time of the interview. Call the parish office at Marriage: To be married at Saint Anne, the preparation process should begin 7 months to one year prior to the wedding date. Please call the parish office to secure a date as soon as possible. Membership at Saint Anne is not a requirement. We look forward to helping you during this time of preparation for the vocation of Christian marriage. First Eucharist and First Reconciliation: These sacraments are typically celebrated in second grade. Candidates must be registered parishioners and complete the two-year preparation program. For more information, call the Faith Formation and Education office at Confirmation: This sacrament is celebrated in high school. Candidates must be registered parishioners and complete the two-year preparation program. For more information, call the PATHS office at Reconciliation: Saturdays, 9:15 a.m. until all are heard or by appointment. Adult Christian Initiation: If you are looking for a place to belong or a church community to share questions and beliefs, perhaps you would like to find out more about what it means to be a Catholic Christian. Saint Anne would be delighted and honored to share the gift of faith and fellowship with you. Call Michael Beard at for information regarding the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults). Registration: To enter into our faith community, please attend an information/registration session at 9:45 a.m. in the Hospitality Room, followed by the 11:00 a.m. Mass on the 1st Sunday of the month, except on holiday weekends when there are no sessions.
