2 CHICAGO PALLIUM CELEBRATION SUNDAY, AUGUST 23RD 2:15 P.M. On Sunday, August 23rd, Archbishop Blase J. Cupich will celebrate a special 2:15 p.m. Mass, at Holy Name Cathedral, State and Superior Streets, Chicago. At this Mass, Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò, Apostolic Nuncio to the United States, will invest Archbishop Cupich with the pallium that was blessed by Pope Francis at the Vatican on Monday, June 29th. Archbishop Cupich will greet the faithful following the Mass until 4:30 p.m. All are invited to attend this celebration, and no tickets are required. CONFERRAL OF THE PALLIUM: When an Archbishop is appointed to a new archdiocese, he requests the Pallium from the Holy See. The Pallium is a scarf or stole-like vestment that is worn over the chasuble when the Archbishop celebrates Mass. It is about two-inches wide, and it rests on the shoulders with a pendant or lappet in the front and the back which hang about 12 inches. When viewed from the front or the back, the Pallium resembles the letter Y. The Pallium is white with six black crosses. Three of those crosses, the ones on the front, back and left shoulder, are ornamented with a gold pin, symbolizing the three nails of Christ s crucifixion. Some of the white wool of the Pallium comes from two lambs that are blessed each year by the Pope on January 21, the feast of St. Agnes. In addition, each of the pendants which hang in front and back are tipped with black satin, resembling the hoof of a lamb; thus the imagery being that of the Archbishop, the chief shepherd of the diocese, carrying a lamb on his shoulders, in imitation of Christ the Good Shepherd. Originally, the Pallium was worn only by the Pope but now it is given, by him, to metropolitan Archbishops as a sign of their unity with the Pope. 2 Saint Anne Church August 16, 2015 stannebarrington.org

16 Sharing the Living Story By Clem Aseron (A) Lectionary texts: (B) Bible texts (has verse #): TWENTIETH SUNDAY OF THE YEAR, 2015 (119B) 1st Reading: Proverbs 9:1-6 Psalm 34:2-3, 4-5, 6-7 Rx = Taste and see the goodness of the Lord. 2nd Reading: Ephesians 5:15-20 Gospel: John 6:51-58 Please refer to (A) and (B) above when I cite verses in the commentary below. John continues to highlight Jesus as being counter -cultural. For example, the gospel pericope for today begins at v.51 with I am (in Greek, ego eimi), which are the very words that God uses to name God s self to Moses at Exodus 3:14. Jesus is again making a claim to highest honor status by identifying himself unmistakably as God a blasphemy to Jewish sensibilities by saying that he is the ego eimi, the I AM. Further, John quotes Jesus: I am the living bread whoever eats this bread will live forever. Astounding; Jesus is claiming that he is not just the manna once sent by the Father! No, he is clear that if you eat this bread you will live forever, not only until the next meal arrives. Moreover, the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world [emphasis mine]. They recoil (v.52) when they hear that the bread of which Jesus is speaking is his own flesh. Really hard words to understand! John reports that the people were in an uproar (The Greek word translated here as quarreled suggests quarreled violently. ) and even derisively challenge him: How can this man give us his flesh to eat? John is very strong and unmistakable in the remaining verses. Yet, is this not what we today call Eucharist: to eat his body and drink his blood? At v.53ff, Flesh and blood is Hebrew idiom indicating the whole man and very likely incited Jesus audience (and John s as well). To them, so familiar with Hebrew scripture, blood is synonymous with life and only God can give life; so again, Jesus claim to higher status would be challenged. Moreover, the drinking of blood was proscribed: see Lev. 17:10, 12, 14. Is it possible that Jesus would speak words such as these in the middle 1 of his ministry? Prior to the Last Supper, how could anyone, especially the crowd (even the disciples?) understand Eucharistic overtones? They were having trouble on just the literal and cultural level! The Church does say that the gospel writers sometimes creatively reweave the tradition that they had received orally 2. But Catholic scholars are agreed that these verses are not the result of particular creative story telling on the part of John. Verse 59 is omitted from today but it gives a clue: He said these things while he was teaching in the synagogue at Capernaum. So, it is plausible that these verses could have been part of Jesus reflection on the readings used in the synagogue during the Passover season 3. The Eucharistic overtones are most likely the result within John s community to struggle and think through Jesus central point; it was finalized in the writing of the last version of this gospel in the first decade of the second century. Please read again my quote at footnote 2. To eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood was counter-cultural and not intelligible to the crowd who experienced Jesus; clearly it was so to the later communities of all the gospel writers. In the time of John s community to which John 16 Saint Anne Church August 16, 2015 stannebarrington.org

17 Sharing the Living Story writes around the year 100, it was becoming common to describe Eucharist as eating Jesus body and drinking his blood. This language certainly describes intimacy closer than interlaced fingers 4 ; an intimacy that is abiding (v.56). Such beautiful words at 57: The Father has shared life with the Son from his very self (John 5:26), and those who feed on the Son also have life for they are intimate with, have solidarity with, Jesus; they have belief, they have faith. Certainly Eucharist is a memorial of Jesus death (1 Corinthians 11:23 ff) and is a continuation of the meal tradition with Jesus during his life and after the resurrection (Luke 24:13-35) But John s emphasis is that the incarnation is itself salvific, that is, the Word has become flesh and has given his flesh and blood as the food of life. That is what we do at holy liturgy: and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh (v.51) sounds very much like This is my body given for you found in the synoptics. Is this not why John puts Jesus Eucharistic words here, in the middle of his ministry, right after his lengthy discourse on the nourishment he provides in revealing the Father? Does not John sketch what we do at Mass? Is this not what we do: during the Liturgy of the Word, we take in, we eat, we internalize the Word of the Lord we are nourished; during the Liturgy of the Eucharist, we take in, we eat, we internalize the Body and Blood of the Lord we are nourished? By Word and Sacrament, we are joined, together with the Father and the Holy Spirit, for we are through him, with him and in him 5. THIS is intimacy! This is solidarity. This is faith. All this scripture, all this explanation. SO WHAT?? In what way do you live your life differently because of being as intimate with Christ as John describes in these verses, particularly at 56 whoever eat my flesh and drink my blood remains in me and I in him. (Emphasis mine). For example, how do you treat your spouse (children, mother, father) when you have opposing views about aspects of your relationship? 1 We are only in Chapter 6; the Last Supper account does not occur until Chapters 13-17, and unlike the Synoptics (Mt, Mk and Lk), John very noticeably does not include an Institution Narrative ( This is my body take and eat this is my blood take and drink ). The multiplication of the loaves and the discourse on the bread of life in Chapter 6 are taken to be John s equivalent of this narrative; note that in chapters the central ritual is the Washing of Feet. 2 From the many things handed down, they [the evangelists] selected some things, reduced others to a synthesis, [still] others they explicated as they kept in mind the situation of the [their particular] churches. (From the 1964 Instruction of the Pontifical Biblical Commission: Historical Truth of the Gospels, #9; brackets mine.) 3 Recall that in the opening verses of this Chapter (6), John makes the point that Passover is at hand. 4 Pilch quotes Charles Talbert that this intimacy describes the close relationship between Jesus ands those who believe in him, who place their loyalty in him [who are in solidarity with him]. 5 All the Eucharistic Prayers culminate and conclude with this Acclamation said by all. We look forward to sharing these celebrations with those who, in some way, are part of our community. Therefore, please note the following: Visitation of the Sick: If you or a family member are in a local hospital or are homebound and would like a visit from a minister of care or a priest, call Mary Hoffing at Baptism: Our Baptism ministry is pleased to help your family prepare for the special event of your child s entrance into our faith community. Two Baptism sessions are required for parents baptizing their 1st child Parents who have had a Baptism at another Catholic Church and are now wanting to baptize a child at Saint Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before scheduling Baptism Parents who have already attended Baptism preparation at Saint Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before scheduling Baptism Information for setting a Baptism date will be given at the meeting or at the time of the interview. Please call the parish office at where all scheduling is done. Marriage: To be married at Saint Anne, your preparation process should begin 7 months to one year prior to your wedding date. Please call the parish office to secure a date as soon as possible. Membership at Saint Anne is not a requirement. We look forward to helping you during this time of engagement and preparation for the vocation of Christian marriage. First Eucharist and First Reconciliation: These sacraments are typically celebrated in second grade. Candidates must be registered parishioners and complete the two-year preparation program. Please call the Faith Formation and Education office at with questions. Confirmation: This sacrament is celebrated in high school. Candidates must be registered parishioners and complete the two-year preparation program. Please call the PATHS office at Reconciliation: Saturdays, 9:15 a.m. until all are heard or by appointment.
