2 Dear People of Saint Anne, We are nearing the end of the Easter season this Sunday as we celebrate the Ascension of the Lord and then Pentecost next weekend. Both of these feasts help us to further make connections to the meaning of the Life, Death and Resurrection of Christ with the lives, deaths and resurrections that take place within our own lives. Our share in the Easter mystery is both concrete and personal. The feast of the Ascension offers us a glimpse to the way that each of us explains Christ s presence in the world today. Often time, we seem to imagine that the Ascension was a final farewell for Jesus a sort of bon voyage in which we are left trying to figure out how to get Christ back down to the world. We find it difficult in making sense of how the Risen Christ can be integrally connected to our own lives. In his book, The Holy Longing, Father Ronald Rolheiser, offers us an explanation to the Easter mystery that is not only about the life of Christ but is also for us who follow Jesus in the here and now. Rolheiser names five stages of the Easter mystery as they take place in our own lives. Good Friday the loss of life real death Easter Sunday the reception of new life The Forty Days of Easter a time for adjustment as we grieve the old and embrace what is new Ascension letting go of the old, letting it bless us, with the refusal to cling Pentecost the reception of new spirit for the new life that we are already beginning to live Rolheiser, the spiritual director that he is, applies these stages to our own lives. He calls us to name our deaths, claim our births, grieve what we have lost while adjusting to a new reality, stop clinging to the old, while letting it ascend and give us a blessing and then to accept the spirit of new life that begins to grace our lives. The dyings and risings that you and I prepare for in our lives are a continual cycle of faith development. Our longings for what was can often frustrate us, disappoint us and leave us angry. But, just as the disciples of Jesus came to know, what was can never be again. Our dying to the desire to cling to the past can be transformed into the reality of what is today. We often long for the past, but the feast of the Ascension does not allow us to turn back but to embrace the presence of the Risen Lord in the present moment and season of our lives. After his Ascension, the Lord blessed his disciples with many gifts to continue his mission on earth. The Lord blesses us with these same gifts. The Christian journey is not a solitary journey. It is meant to be in communion with others. Here at Saint Anne, we have 80 ministries and organizations in the four commissions that make up the organizational chart of our parish community. I invite you to pay attention to the Clarion or to open up our website, stannebarrington.org, and reflect on the ways that you can deepen your faith and influence by considering joining one of our ministry groups. Your sense of our parish will be deeply affected by this more personal involvement in bringing the good news to others. We can also play an important role in reaching out to our friends and neighbors to get more deeply involved in the life of our parish. As we listen to the experiences of those who have drifted away, the relevance and investment in the community of faith gradually diminished as a priority in their lives. It is so important for children and young people to see their parents active, participating and worshiping on a regular basis. Families need to work out the challenges that begin to encroach on their commitment to make the Lord s Day and to participate in the call to worship and give thanks to God. On Monday, we celebrate Memorial Day. A day of national awareness and reverence, we honor those Americans who died while serving and defending our country. Let us not forget how fortunate we are to live in freedom as we remember and pray for those who sacrificed their lives to protect our freedom. Mass will be celebrated on Memorial Day, Monday, May 29th, at 9:00 a.m. Have a blessed week, Father Bernie Pietrzak Post Script: Next weekend, at the 9:00 a.m. Mass, we welcome Pastor Don Wink, the senior pastor of Atonement Lutheran Church, who will be preaching as we commemorate the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. 2 Saint Anne Church May 28, 2017 stannebarrington.org

4 Worship LITURGY CORNER By Rory Cooney COMMUNION IV THIS IS MY BODY; THIS IS MY BLOOD. Sometimes we think of these words in the consecration, echoing the words of the Last Supper, as magical, that by saying these words, Jesus changed the supper food into his own life. The incantation hocus pocus actually reinforces that claim as those words are a corruption of the Latin hoc est enim corpus meum, the words ʺfor this is my bodyʺ in Latin, spoken in the Mass. To any student of Eucharistic theology, the story of the Eucharist is not confined to the Last Supper; its origins are in the table ministry of Jesus as well as in the post-resurrection narratives, taken in the context of the Last Supper, with all its overtones of the Sabbath, Passover and, in John, atonement. It is a complex, richly layered origin. But even this is not incomprehensible to us as human beings. Again, I think that it is our duty to take faith out of the realm of magic and put it into the realm of experience so that it can be truly human. Food doesnʹt fall out of heaven into our cupboards and refrigerators, at least it hasnʹt since the time of manna. Even with the advent of Peapod and similar internet services where we can press a few buttons and, a few hours later, a man appears on our doorstep with groceries, we know that there is more exchanged than hope and electrons. The food in our homes, the food that sustains us and our families, the food that makes our living possible and sustains us in our work and play, all this has to be paid for. Money is required. Some has to come from us and go to someone else. This part is obvious. But what is that money, really? For most of us, money is life-time. We only get so much of it, only so many years. Only so many weeks in those years, days in those weeks, hours in those days. Money comes from trading our time for it. We work at our jobs; we get money to buy groceries. We buy food with our lives. We canʹt trade it back in, either. You canʹt buy back the forty hours you traded for your paycheck; itʹs gone. What we have is a symbol of life spent. So we take that paycheck, and we go buy groceries. And we bring them home, fire up the stove and oven and start preparing a meal. We gather our kids, our families, our friends, whomever. We take the food we have lovingly bought and prepared, arrange it as festively or informally as we can on the table. We say a blessing. We pass it around. Can you see how, as your mother or sister or son or daughter or friend asks for the bread, you could be thinking as you pass it with love, ʺthis is my body, this is my blood?ʺ You have spent your life for it. All that is left is your intention. Can we learn to intentionally give our lives in our work, in all we do, as an act of love for others so that even the act of sharing our tables becomes an Eucharistic act that can be connected to the great Eucharistic act of Christ? Life lived in love, given away, even in and maybe especially in the simple intentional act of sharing a meal with others, is an icon of divine life. Sharing food at table is sharing life. Is it your time to sing? STEP UP! Summer is a good time to join the choir, meet new people, and start doing something new and important in the parish. We are looking for new members who would like to be part of our musical tradition at Saint Anne. So, STEP UP! Call or Rory Cooney. 6 Faith Formation and Education SAINT ANNE PARISH SCHOOL NEWS OUR 3RD GRADE AWESOME AUTHORS On Tuesday, May 23rd, third grade had their Awesome Author Afternoon in celebration of becoming published authors. Earlier in the school year, the third graders were given the Native American-themed topic how something in nature came to be. With that theme in mind, the students wrote and illustrated a folktale story. As part of the third grade curriculum and the Illinois Common Core State Standards for narrative writing, students drafted, edited, revised, conferenced and created a final draft. In addition to becoming published authors, the students sang and performed songs on their recorders related to other third grade topics. Such topics include plants and the fifty states. They participated in a variety of different activities throughout the afternoon such as creating their own bookmark and a book made out of brown paper bags. This was truly an enjoyable and wonderful afternoon celebrating our published authors! 16 Sharing the Living Story By Clem Aseron (A) Lectionary texts: (B) Bible texts (has verse #): SOLEMNITY OF THE ASCENSION OF THE LORD, 2017 (58A) Acts of the Apostles 1:1-11 Responsorial Psalm: 47:2-3, 6-7, 8-9 RX = God mounts his throne to shouts of joy: a blare of trumpets for the Lord. Ephesians 1:17-23 Matthew 28:16-20 Please refer to (A) and (B) above when I cite verses in the commentary below. Note that during the Easter season, all the pericopes chosen from the Acts of the Apostles as well as those from the Gospels are post-resurrections stories. Recall that for the ancients, a setting on a mountaintop was where God and humans met and where important revelations were made by deity. Today s gospel pericope 1 can be unpacked by keying on v.17b: but they doubted. Unlike the other 3 evangelists, there are no passages in Matthew that describe the Ascension of our Lord; these last verses at the very end of his gospel are proclaimed this Sunday in Cycle A. 2 At vv.18-19, Matthew acknowledges very high status for Jesus but it is not as though high honor were a reward for the way Jesus had lived his life. It is rather to be seen as a return of Jesus to the place from which he had come: the right hand of the Father (see also v.20 of today s Reading II). These verses are addressed to the doubters among the Eleven. They well might have been doubters. Remember that in Matthew, there is not a Jesus walking through walls, no display of wounds, no Doubting Thomas; there are only the women, who alone by themselves at the tomb, see it empty after the stone is rolled back by an angel (God s messenger) who sends them to tell the good news to the disciples. Hurrying to find the disciples, they encounter the Resurrected One who confirms that they the women are being sent to the disciples to announce to them the good news that he has been resurrected! Could these women be Apostles the meaning of that word is: a special messenger from God sent out to proclaim a message. Hmm? If the disciples were in doubt about whom they were seeing, imagine what they thought when they heard Jesus words. Matthew s description of those words is astonishing; Jesus approached and said Go, make disciples of all nations note the plural, nations, meaning those outside the Chosen. This inclusivity is certainly not the cultural belief of Matthew s community which is composed of Judean (Jewish) converts whose sensibilities would have been shaped within that first century religious and cultural context. In their view, they were the people chosen from among all other peoples and nations to be special, set aside, Chosen. Since they were The Chosen, then it must have been a God who was special among all the other Gods who had singled them out. Matthew has previously shown this God, in Jesus, restricting the mission of the disciples to the lost sheep of the house of Israel (10:5-6, 15:24). But in his very last verses, Matthew shows Jesus asserting some jarring ideas. Instead of authority being shared among the hierarchy of higher beings, 3 Matthew shows Jesus asserting a counter-cultural claim: [All] power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Jesus is making claim to highest status: equating himself the Most High God. Moreover, the commission given to the Eleven as a consequence of All power... is equally startling! They are told: Go therefore and make disciples of all nations... teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. This is a command, and the message is no longer to be directed only to insiders, that is, to the Chosen. Hence, Matthew quotes that Jesus sends the Eleven to Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations. That plural of the word nation includes all peoples, even pagans. Imagine the shock of this counter-cultural command! Little wonder that some of them doubted! At the end of his book, Matthew describes Jesus telling his inner circle that they are no longer to divide the world into the 16 Saint Anne Church May 28, 2017 stannebarrington.org

17 Sharing the Living Story Chosen versus the outsiders. They are commanded to go out and baptize all peoples, to bring everyone into his fold in which righteousness will be paramount. It is a view of God s kingdom in which there prevails right order or right relationship; in other words, righteousness or God s justice. What an impossible commission the Christ gave them. Might they have thought: really, Lord the whole world? But see Matthew s book ends with an equally amazing assurance: And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age. With wonder, we sing the Psalm Refrain: God mounts his throne with shouts of joy; a blare of trumpets for the Lord. So What? If this is about God s kingdom, what role do we play in its formation? What can Matthew mean to us with the last sentence of his gospel in which Jesus assures the Eleven, And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age. Next week, we celebrate Pentecost, the coming of the Holy Spirit. We are prepared for that by the three readings for today during which the Holy Spirit is mentioned; e.g. note v.8 of Acts, But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, throughout Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. Today signals the ending of the Easter season. Maybe this Sunday and next Sunday, Pentecost, give a hint of the thrust of the ensuing weeks of Ordinary Sundays of the Year until Advent comes at the end of Pericope = a passage chosen from the bible to be used at particular Mass. Reading I is a pericope taken from the Hebrew scripture with the notable exception during the Easter season when it comes from the Acts of the Apostles; the second pericope is a sung piece not a reading that is taken from the Hebrew scripture and almost always from the Psalms; Reading II (third pericope) is from Paul or another Apostle; Reading III (fourth pericope) is from one of the four Evangelists (Gospel writers). These are chosen to highlight a central idea which is often easily discernable when viewing the first and the third pericope through the lens of the Refrain to the Psalm. 2 The first of three yearly cycles each of which is devoted to one of three Evangelists, Matthew, Mark or Luke. The fourth evangelist, John, is distributed among those three during seasons like Easter; John is also used for 5 of the Sundays during Mark s year B. 3 The social order of beings at this time would have looked like this: Our God, the Most High God Other Gods or sons of God or archangels Lower non-human beings like angels, spirits, demons Humans Creatures lower than humans Saint Anne Church May 28, 2017 stannebarrington.org 17

Therefore, please note the following: Visitation of the Sick: If you or a family member are in a local hospital or are homebound and would like a visit from a minister of care or a priest, call Mary Ellen Johnston at Baptism: Our Baptism ministry is pleased to help your family prepare for the special event of your child s entrance into our faith community. Two Baptism sessions are required for parents baptizing their 1st child Parents who have had a Baptism at another Catholic Church and are now wanting to baptize a child at Saint Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before scheduling Baptism Parents who have already attended Baptism preparation at Saint Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before scheduling Baptism Information for setting a Baptism date will be given at the meeting or at the time of the interview. Call the parish office at Marriage: To be married at Saint Anne, the preparation process should begin 7 months to one year prior to the wedding date. Please call the parish office to secure a date as soon as possible. Membership at Saint Anne is not a requirement. We look forward to helping you during this time of preparation for the vocation of Christian marriage. First Eucharist and First Reconciliation: These sacraments are typically celebrated in second grade. Candidates must be registered parishioners and complete the two-year preparation program. For more information, call the Faith Formation and Education office at Confirmation: This sacrament is celebrated in high school.
