2 Wellstreams Living Waters for the Journey in Faith By Sister Lauretta Leipzig LOOKING INTO THE HEART Do you remember your school days when all the children would gather to play ball at recess? The captain who picked the teams always went for the big, tall, fast, athletic children for his team. No captain ever picked someone because they thought, I bet he is a great teammate, a hard worker or has a wonderful personality. By nature, we tend to value external qualities rather than internal qualities. However, we read in the Old Testament story of Samuel, Do not consider appearances. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. We look at the outward appearances, but the Lord looks at the heart. Clearly, we frequently observe people s color or features, dress, habits or other more obvious outer appearances. As a result, we can be very aware of how people appear, but with God, it is different. God judges the heart, valuing faith and love which are planted there beyond human discernment. God looks at each of us and sees and knows, most importantly, what is within, what wisdom, prudence, integrity, mercy and goodness dwell there. God sees only who and what we are! St. Peter, in one of his letters, talks about an imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet heart which, in God s sight, is very precious. These qualities of the heart are a birthright from God a gift from God. A little black boy was watching the balloon man at a fair. The man was evidently a good salesman because he allowed a red balloon to break loose and soar high in the air, attracting a crowd of prospective customers. Next, he released a blue balloon, a yellow one and finally, a white one. They all went soaring into the sky until they disappeared. The little boy stood looking at the black balloon still fastened to the holder for a long time, then asked, Sir, if you sent the black one up, would it go as high as the others? The balloon man gave the kid an understanding smile. He snapped the string that held the black balloon in place and, as it soared upward, said, It isn t the color, son. It s what s inside that makes it rise. We have heard the phrase heart moments. Heart moments allow us to forgive, accept, reconcile. When we are gifted with heart moments, there is a clarity about what is going on inside and around us. We are aware, maybe even surprised, at our attempts to inspire others, to be positive and grateful persons. We are more caring and supportive of others. We are more respectful of other s gifts and talents, more affirming in the way we give credence to other s values and beliefs. It s at those times we can truly believe, as the wise balloon man, that It s what s inside that makes it rise. It s those times that make us rise to be more than we ever dreamed. Most of us would not make very good rock collectors. If we saw a rock lying on the ground, we probably would not even bother to stop and pick it up. However, an avid collector knows very well that you can t judge a rock by its outer appearance. What looks like an ordinary, even ugly rock to us may be beautiful on the inside. So, rock collectors will pick up the rocks and look within and polish them into something beautiful. This is exactly what Samuel is telling us God does not judge nor even see the way we appear on the outside. As God looks into the heart and sees something very beautiful, so must we look at others in the same way. Numerous well-known men and women have talked or written about the importance of acknowledging and valuing the heart of a person. Helen Keller believed that the best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen nor touched but are felt in the heart. She talked about beauty as simple reality seen with the eyes of love, believing that everyone has inside a piece of good news. The good news is that you don t know how great you can be, how much you can love and what your potential is! Kahlil Gibran writes: Beauty is a light in the heart. Anthony de Mello, in his book entitled The Heart of the Enlightened, recognized the importance of the heart. He writes: The enlightened know that to make the world a painless and warm place, you need to change your heart not the world. Finally, Carl Jung writes: Your vision can become clear only when you can look into your heart. Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes! We need to believe in and strive for a God-oriented heart that looks to people s inner self rather than external qualities. Let us pray that our hearts would be prepared to honestly look at our attitudes and motivations to see where our vision is focused. Pray that God opens our eyes to the fact that, though our natural position is to look on the outside, we would be inspired, rather, to look into hearts and see every single person every brother and sister in the world as God sees them. 2 Saint Anne Church June 14, 2015 stannebarrington.org

5 Faith Formation and Education SAINT ANNE PARISH SCHOOL NEWS KINDERGARTEN CELEBRATES ANOTHER FABULOUS YEAR The kindergarteners enjoyed a busy last trimester in the final stages of preparation for first grade. They practiced their Jolly Phonics knowledge in reading groups and creative writing assignments. Addition and subtraction were key math concepts explored as well as an introduction to time and money. We celebrated our mothers with a Mothers Day Tea and enjoyed field trips to the Barrington Bank & Trust, Heritage Farm and Arlington Lanes where we bowled with our 5th grade buddies and had a great Field Day. An inquiry unit on farming allowed the children to grow beans, lettuce and corn. They also researched farm animals, jobs and equipment. To share what they learned, they wrote and shared books about animals on the farm, drawing pictures of a farm with animals, plants and machinery found there. An inquiry unit on insects had the students investigating butterflies, ants and ladybugs. They observed the stages of the ladybug life cycle using live ladybugs and created projects which helped them learn the body parts and life cycles of ants and butterflies. A beautiful prayer service facilitated by the kindergarten children ended the school year. They wore graduation caps, sang songs and shared many of the things they learned with their parents and family members. We are proud to send them to first grade and look forward to a new class in the fall! 6 Faith Formation and Education PATHS HIGH SCHOOL CONFIRMATION PROGRAM REGISTRATION Beginning this Sunday, we are accepting registration for PATHS, our two-year high school Confirmation program for The registration will be posted on the Saint Anne website under Faith Formation and Education and Upcoming Registrations. We would like people to register by Tuesday, June 30th, but will accept registrations after that date. The early registration helps us to plan our program more effectively and also informs us as to the number of catechists we need. The program consists of 12 sessions in each of the two years: 4 large group sessions in our Parish Gym keynoting a speaker, music and a student reflection. There are also 8 small group sessions hosted in a catechist s home. We are using Matthew Kelly s program titled Decision Point. It has been well received in its debut this past year by catechists and students. Students are also expected to work on a community service project of their choosing over the two years. Second year candidates are required to participate in the Spiritus Retreat, a one day interactive retreat, held at the Jesuit Retreat House in Barrington. For more information about the content of the program, look on our website for Confirmation Packet which includes full details of our program. 16 Sharing the Living Story By Clem Aseron (A) Lectionary texts: (B) Bible texts (has verse #): ELEVENTH SUNDAY OF THE YEAR, 2015 (92B) 1st Reading: Ezekiel 17:22-24 Psalm 92:2-3, 13-14, Rx = Lord, it is good to give thanks to you. 2nd Reading: 2 Corinthians 5:6-10 Gospel: Mark 4:26-34 Please refer to (A) and (B) above when I cite verses in the commentary below. The triptych is closed and the decorations less solemn; there is the sense that we have returned to a less intense time liturgically. We had entered the Sundays of Ordinary Time of the Church s liturgical year by just having celebrated the Solemnity of the Holy Trinity and the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ. We left the high plane of John s Gospel that we and the neophytes 1 study each year during the seven Sundays of Easter ending at Pentecost. We are in the less intense days of the cycle that stretches into the long season of summer Sundays of the Year which end with Christ the King this coming Sunday, November 22nd. We started this year of Mark way back in Advent on the 30th of November, 2014 and we now resume reading and praying this gospel writer until next Advent. The thread running through the Lectionary selections today makes it easy to see what might be called the integrity of the Lectionary, i.e., the meaning behind the selection of these particular biblical passages for this particular liturgy. As is often the case, the thread is captured by the psalm refrain: Lord, it is good to give thanks to you. As we follow the four pericopes for today, perhaps we can track what it is for which we are to give thanks to the Lord. However, it is good also to remind ourselves that we are God s people because God first took the initiative and chose us simply out love for us and not because of anything we did or have yet to do in order to merit such love. There is only one thing that is operating: very simply, it is God s great love for the creatures God created. Note the picture Mark paints to his community: At v.10, Jesus, when he was alone, those present along with the Twelve, questioned him about the parables; this is not the large crowd shown at v.1. Jesus continues The mystery of the kingdom of God has been granted to you. But to those outside, everything comes in parables all of the chapter is parables! Today s gospel pericope is made up of two short parables: at v.26b, Jesus describes the kingdom [as if] a man were to scatter seed then, the man would just go about his business each night and day (sleeping and rising) while the seed would sprout and grow, he knows not how. Follow vv.28, 29a; all comes to fruit and suddenly the harvest is in the harvester wields the sickle at once. What is the meaning here? Parables use metaphor to tease us into an interpretation beyond the literalness. Where do we take this one: after all, the harvester comes upon the yield without having done a thing to cultivate the seed or care for the ground or even water it. Where did the yield come from? What does the yield represent? 16 Saint Anne Church June 14, 2015 stannebarrington.org

17 Sharing the Living Story The second parable is three very short verses! The smallest seed is sown and again, without anybody tending it at all, it becomes the largest of all plants with branches so large that the birds dwell in its shade. That s it? Again, from where did such a large yield come? What is this yield, what does it represent, what is to become of it? There does not seem to be an answer. Should we then not ask such questions? A look at the Hebrew scripture points us to a vision for the Lectionary selection of the gospel for today. The Lord God is quoted at v.22: the very top, the cedar, that magnificent and sturdy tree will be selected by God and planted by God on the highest mountain top of all Israel where it will branch out to bear much fruit and become a majestic tree which will shelter every kind of bird and even every winged creature in its boughs. What s more, at v.24, all the other trees will recognize what the Lord can do with all trees. At the end of this verse, the Lord punctuates the foregoing admonition: As I, the Lord, have spoken, so will I do. Is that it: the Lord is the source of the selection, the cultivation, the fruition, even the leveling of that very fruition? The verses of Psalm 92 sing the praises of its refrain. It is indeed good to give thanks for verses 13 and 14 to say nothing of the assurances at verses 15 and 16, we are therefore to remember: Lord, it is good to give thanks to you. The end of the pericope from Corinthians says: For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each may receive recompense, according to what he did in the body, whether good or evil. Read the entire pericope, but this verse 10 seems to imply that while our role may not be a passive acceptance of what the Lord has done and is doing, we must prepare for the coming of the kingdom by what we will be judged by: whether we did good or evil; a simple reward or punishment. SO WHAT?? But where does that leave our role in the bringing to fruit the Kingdom? Do we have nothing to say in what is to be planted, how and with what it should be cultivated, pruned, watered, and fertilized? Do we do any weeding, cross breeding, selection? What about the harvest? Do we humans have any role here at all? Or is it really God s kingdom as the very name, the Kingdom of God states? 1 The newly initiated into the Church Saint Anne Church June 14, 2015 stannebarrington.org 17

We look forward to sharing these celebrations with those who, in some way, are part of our community. Therefore, please note the following: Visitation of the Sick: If you or a family member are in a local hospital or are homebound and would like a visit from a minister of care or a priest, call Mary Hoffing at Baptism: Our Baptism ministry is pleased to help your family prepare for the special event of your child s entrance into our faith community. Two Baptism sessions are required for parents baptizing their 1st child Parents who have had a Baptism at another Catholic Church and are now wanting to baptize a child at Saint Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before scheduling Baptism Parents who have already attended Baptism preparation at Saint Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before scheduling Baptism Information for setting a Baptism date will be given at the meeting or at the time of the interview. Please call the parish office at where all scheduling is done. Marriage: To be married at Saint Anne, your preparation process should begin 7 months to one year prior to your wedding date. Please call the parish office to secure a date as soon as possible. Membership at Saint Anne is not a requirement. We look forward to helping you during this time of engagement and preparation for the vocation of Christian marriage. First Eucharist and First Reconciliation: These sacraments are typically celebrated in second grade. Candidates must be registered parishioners and complete the two-year preparation program. Please call the GIFT office at with questions. Confirmation: This sacrament is celebrated in high school. Candidates must be registered parishioners and complete the two-year preparation program. Please call Reconciliation: Saturdays ₉:₁₅ a.m. until all are heard or by appointment. Registration: To enter into our faith community, please attend an information/registration session at 9:30 a.m. in the Hospitality Room, followed by the 11:00 a.m. Mass on the 1st Sunday of the month, except on holiday weekends when there are no sessions.
