2 THE EUCHARIST AS RECONCILIATION By Fr. Ron Rolheiser Few persons have understood the Eucharist as deeply as St. Augustine. His homilies on it are precious, particularly those to newly baptized adults who were receiving the Eucharist for the first time. In one of these, he tells them that their sins are forgiven at the Eucharist: ʺNext [at the Eucharist], the Lordʹs Prayer is said.... Why is it said before receiving the body and blood of Christ? Because perhaps on account of our human fragility, our minds have imagined something which is not becoming, our eyes have seen something which is not decent or our ears heard something which was not fitting. If perhaps such things have been kept in because of temptation and the fragility of human life, they are washed away by the Lordʹs Prayer at the moment we say `Forgive us our trespassesʹ so that we can safely approach the sacrament.ʺ According to Augustine, when we stand around the altar at the Eucharist as a community and sincerely pray the Lordʹs Prayer, any sins we have committed are forgiven. The Eucharist is ultimate sacrament of reconciliation. It is the ancient water of cleansing, now turned into the new wine of reconciliation, that purifies us so that we can enter the house and celebrate. How is this so? In the second chapter of Johnʹs gospel, we have the miracle at Cana where Jesus changes water into wine. Too often, we see this simply as a gesture of hospitality: The hosts ran out of wine, Jesus felt sorry for them and so changed six jugs of water into wine to spare them the embarrassment. Such an interpretation however misses the main point. Scripture scholars, Raymond Brown among them, tell us that in the early chapters of John, there is a strong recurring theme of Jesus replacing the old with the new. That is the case here. He is replacing the old rite of cleansing with something new. What? Key to grasping the significance of this miracle is the particular jugs of water that got changed into wine. The water that Jesus changed into wine was the wash-water, the water used to ritually cleanse yourself when you entered a house. At the door of every Jewish house, there were a series of water-jugs, usually six of them, which were kept filled with water. Upon entering a house, you were obliged to first stop and wash your hands and feet, both because they were usually covered with dust and because you were obliged, ritually, to do this. By washing in this way, you made yourself ʺcleanʺ so that you could join the household and sit at table with them. What Jesus does at Cana is change this water, used for cleansing, into wine. He replaces the old rite of cleansing with something new - the Eucharist. The Eucharist is therefore both the sacrament that celebrates unity and the sacrament that cleanses us for it. At the Eucharist, our sins are forgiven because to touch Christ is to be healed, even of sin. And we touch Christ, physically, in the Eucharist. But if this is true, if our sins are forgiven in the Eucharist, where does that leave the Catholic sacrament of confession? Is there still a need for explicit confession? That we can have our sins forgiven by participating in the Eucharist in no way denigrates the need for private confession. The opposite. To touch the body of Christ is the greatest antidote to the rationalizing individualism that precisely tempts us away from explicit confession. A biblical text, the story of the woman who touches the hem of Jesusʹ garment, can be helpful in understanding this. In her encounter with Jesus, we see that there are in fact two moments of healing, the initial touch and a subsequent, explicit, one-to-one conversation. Confession to a priest and forgiveness of sins through simply touching the body of Christ in the Eucharist are connected in the same way as that womanʹs explicit exchange with Jesus is related to her initial touching of his garment. The person-to-person exchange brings the healing to a fuller moment, a fuller maturity and a fuller peace. Explicit confession is to the sacrament of reconciliation what an explicit apology is to reconciliation with each other in our daily lives. Actions speak, just as words do, and we can apologize to each other simply by letting our presence speak. But something is left unfinished until an explicit apology is spoken. Mature people apologize, in words as well as in actions. Moreover, as the literature on addictions points out, there can never be a full healing of oneʹs past until one faces, with searing honesty, oneʹs sins and tells them, face to face, to another human being. Explicit, sacramental confession is an indispensable piece within the process of full reconciliation. However, as both scripture and Augustine assure us, when we stand around an altar at Eucharist and pray the Lordʹs Prayer, our sins are already forgiven. 2 Saint Anne Church June 7, 2015 stannebarrington.org

The program consists of 12 sessions in each of the two years: 4 large group sessions in our Parish Gym keynoting a speaker, music and a student reflection. There are also 8 small group sessions hosted in a catechist s home. We are using Matthew Kelly s program titled Decision Point. It has been well received in its debut this past year by catechists and students. Students are also expected to work on a community service project of their choosing over the two years. Second year candidates are required to participate in the Spiritus Retreat, a one day interactive retreat, held at the Jesuit Retreat House in Barrington. For more information about the content of the program, look on our website for Confirmation Packet which includes full details of our program. 16 Sharing the Living Story By Clem Aseron (A) Lectionary texts: (B) Bible texts (has verse #): THE SOLEMNITY OF THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST, 2015 (168B) 1st Reading: Exodus 24:3-8 Psalm 116:12-13, 15-16, Rx = I will take the cup of salvation and call on the name of the Lord. 2nd Reading: Hebrews 9:11-15 Gospel: Mark 14:12-16, Please refer to (A) and (B) above when I cite verses in the commentary below. There is a unity among the four pericopes selected for the Lectionary 1 for the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ; the cultural and theological thread in the gospel pericope 2 concerns the covenantal relationship between the Lord and the disciples and has resonance in the Hebrew scripture (Exodus pericope) as well as the Psalm and the pericope from the Letter to the Hebrews. The setting in Mark (and in the other two synoptics) 3 during Passover is historically less accurate than John s account which has the last supper occurring before Passover. It is probable that the synoptic authors wished to emphasize to their audience that Jesus observed the tradition. Accordingly, Mark describes that it is the males (the Twelve) who prepare the Passover meal in keeping with the command from ancient times. 4 (Females prepared ordinary meals) Meals like this are served by a single woman, usually a widow, who tended to the needs of the men and the boys past the age of puberty; women, girls and younger boys ate separately at a later time. But note the setting: it is the city of the Temple; Judeans (Jews) are streaming in from distant places for the holy days of Passover which recall and make present the liberation from oppression by the God of their ancestors. They are still under oppression 5 this time it is Romans who permit them to remember, to recall their deliverance from Egypt and to celebrate, but it causes tension. Mark introduces a bombshell into this highly charged context: the conspiracy against Jesus by the authorities, 6 and their hiring of Judas. The political context the sneaking around by Judas and his looking for an opportunity to betray Jesus 7 strongly suggests that Jesus and the Twelve are keeping a very low profile. This makes vv intelligible. The image of the man in v.13 is culturally startling, 8 but he is certainly easy to spot in the crowd; this contact man leads the two advance men to a safe house where after giving the suitable passwords, they are admitted to a previously readied space for celebrating the Passover but this time, more in the style of the original Passover. 9 Despite this tension and Jesus revelation about the impending betrayal and their resulting great distress, Jesus breaks bread and then interprets its meaning for them. He applies the parts of the story of the meal not to the great Exodus event but to himself. He is the pasach, the paschal lamb 10 who renews the blood of the covenant 11 by his death. In anthropologic terms, this meal shared in common is more a ceremony than a ritual. A ritual causes a change in status; baptism would be an example. A ceremony is regular, repeated and predictable and serves to confirm and legitimate the roles and status of people within the community. Eating in common implies that these people share common ideas and values and common social status 12 as well. However, note the parallel in today s Hebrew and Christian scripture periscopes; Moses mediates the covenant at Sinai between the Lord and the people. 13 The Lord will give them land and rescue them from oppression by their 16 Saint Anne Church June 7, 2015 stannebarrington.org

17 Sharing the Living Story enemies. In turn, they will keep the Lord s commandments. It is a covenant, and it is sealed by blood. The Christian scripture pericope to the Hebrews describes Jesus as the mediator of a new covenant; 14 his death (blood) seals this relationship, and the people are rescued from the oppression of sin and death. In the meal called the Last Supper, Jesus uses bread and wine to do an action which is prophetic: the rescue that he will soon perform will liberate people from the oppression of sin. Of course, the disciples do not yet understand. So Mark sets this meal in the context of the Passover and adds for them (and for today s disciples) the dimension of anamnesis or remembrance; it is an act whose repetition would make present, in the now, an event that occurred in the past. To celebrate the Passover today makes present the mighty salvation deeds of God 15 for those celebrating. To celebrate the Breaking of the Bread and the Pouring out of the Blood makes present the covenant promise of Jesus. But is it over? At v.25, Jesus say he will fast from the sign of the covenant: Truly I tell you, I will never again drink of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God. That kingdom is where God s justice is brought to fulfillment, where glad tidings are brought to the poor, liberty is proclaimed to captives, sight is given to the blind, and the oppressed are set free. We go to Communion each Sunday. We most likely do not think or pray in these categories. Perhaps we simply give thanks for the blessings we have; some days, we are pressed to ask the Lord for insight or for help. On other days, perhaps there is more. SO WHAT?? What do these theological categories mean in our everyday lives? A covenant is made between two parties. At v.24, Jesus says that the cup contained his blood of the covenant which would be shed for many. What action(s) do we do that signify our involvement in this covenant? Works consulted: Social-Science Commentary on the Synoptic Gospels, Bruce J. Malina and Richard L. Rohrbaugh; Say to This Mountain, Mark s Story of Discipleship, Ched Myers, et. al.; The New Jerome Biblical Commentary, Ed. Raymond E. Brown; The Cultural World of Jesus, Cycle B, John J. Pilch. 1 Lectionary: the Church s book of biblical passages chosen to be read at each Mass celebrated during the Liturgical Year 2 Pericope: scriptural passage selected for use in the Lectionary; it may contain discontinuous verses (the Psalm or the Gospel for today) or added words (Brothers and sisters are not in the bible text) or rearranged text (compare the Ps Refrain with its v.13). 3 Matthew and Luke draw from Mark, the earliest gospel, to sketch their specific narrative; the three are called the Synoptics since a given event can be viewed in three parallel columns. 4 Exodus 12:3ff. You shall observe this rite as an ordinance for you and your sons for ever. 5 Exodus Chapters 1-18 for the story of the first Passover. 6 Mark 14:1-2 7 Mark 14:10-11; see also It is interesting that Mark does not have Jesus respond that it is Judas who will betray him. 8 Mark s readers would have found it strange that a man was carrying a jar of water. It was the task of women to gather at the well, to draw and carry water; a male in that setting would be immediately suspect; in terms of honor/shame he would be an immediate challenge to the fathers, brothers, husbands associated with any women nearby. 9 Exodus 12:11, as those in flight Exodus v.8 of today s pericope from the Hebrew scripture 12 How startling, even jarring, it is when Jesus departs from the norm as he eats with all manner of folk. Mark 2:15ff. 13 Exodus 24:3ff 14 Note the use of the phrase The blood of the new and eternal covenant at the end of the Consecration at Mass. 15 The Hebrew Scriptures record the deeds of God s mighty right arm which rescued the people of the First Covenant time and again. We look forward to sharing these celebrations with those who, in some way, are part of our community. Therefore, please note the following: Visitation of the Sick: If you or a family member are in a local hospital or are homebound and would like a visit from a minister of care or a priest, call Mary Hoffing at Baptism: Our Baptism ministry is pleased to help your family prepare for the special event of your child s entrance into our faith community. Two Baptism sessions are required for parents baptizing their 1st child Parents who have had a Baptism at another Catholic Church and are now wanting to baptize a child at Saint Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before scheduling Baptism Parents who have already attended Baptism preparation at Saint Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before scheduling Baptism Information for setting a Baptism date will be given at the meeting or at the time of the interview. Please call the parish office at where all scheduling is done. Marriage: To be married at Saint Anne, your preparation process should begin 7 months to one year prior to your wedding date. Please call the parish office to secure a date as soon as possible. Membership at Saint Anne is not a requirement. We look forward to helping you during this time of engagement and preparation for the vocation of Christian marriage. First Eucharist and First Reconciliation: These sacraments are typically celebrated in second grade. Candidates must be registered parishioners and complete the two-year preparation program. Please call the GIFT office at with questions. Confirmation: This sacrament is celebrated in high school. Candidates must be registered parishioners and complete the two-year preparation program. Please call Reconciliation: Saturdays ₉:₁₅ a.m. until all are heard or by appointment. Registration: To enter into our faith community, please attend an information/registration session at 9:30 a.m. in the Hospitality Room, followed by the 11:00 a.m. Mass on the 1st Sunday of the month, except on holiday weekends when there are no sessions. For further information, call the Rectory office at * THE NEXT NEW PARISHIONER WELCOMING SESSION AND REGISTRATION WILL BE ON SUNDAY, AUGUST 2ND *
