The Clarion Volume 12, No. 43 TWENTY-FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME September 18, 2016 Our Parish Mission Led by the Spirit, the Catholic community of Saint Anne strives to live the example of Jesus, who said, I came so that you might have life, and have it more abundantly. (John 10:10) Liturgy Schedule Monday-Friday: 8:15 a.m. Saturday: First Saturday: 8:15 a.m. Reconciliation: Saturdays, 9:15 a.m. until all are heard Mass of Anticipation: 5:15 p.m. Sunday: 7:15, 9:00, 11:00 a.m., 5:15 p.m. Saint Anne Catholic Community 120 North Ela Street, Barrington, IL stannebarrington.org

Saint Anne Catholic Community IN-PEW SURVEY BACKGROUND AND WHY WITH THANKS TO GOD Each and everyday, as believers and servant disciples of Jesus, we, the people of Saint Anne are living out the Gospel message of Christ who came that we have might have life and live it more abundantly. Together, we gather in worship, welcome others to the faith and deepen our relationship with Christ through our commitment to life long faith formation for all. We share ourselves and our resources in God s service with compassion for those in need. Over the past few years, the leaders of the Saint Anne Catholic Community, including the Parish Council of Ministries, the Parish Finance Council, the School Advisory Board and many other lay and staff leaders, have engaged in a parish transformation process in cooperation with the Archdiocese of Chicago. We carefully examined our parish s needs and our ability to support those needs through our current physical structures and financial resources. To that end, our parish leadership is endeavoring to devise a plan in response to the following considerations: We need to retire the remaining debt from building the beautiful church and its sacred spaces we use today. The church and school buildings are in need of critical maintenance and repair. The parish facilities no longer meet the needs of our parish staff and ministries, necessitating substantial renovations to the Parish Center. In doing so, we will adhere closely to the sound and prudent financial management practices which we have employed over much of the last decade and that have provided the foundation for Saint Anne's growth and fiscal stability. We will not depart from that approach with this campaign. No projects will be undertaken until the funds are already in hand, and Saint Anne shall not incur any debt as part of this campaign. MOVING FORWARD The Saint Anne Catholic Community is poised to conduct a campaign that will strengthen our ministries and community outreach for the decade to come, while ensuring that our physical plant remains a strong foundation for parish life. The breakdown of these case elements is as follows: Retire the remaining building debt. When our community last came together to build our church and school nearly 20 years ago, remarkable results were achieved. It is time to finally retire the remaining debt from that endeavor. 2 Saint Anne Church September 18, 2016 stannebarrington.org

Saint Anne Catholic Community Complete critical repair, maintenance and upgrade projects. Saint Anne is our faith home, and in many ways, our second home. We must treat it as our own and ensure that it is cared for and maintained properly. Our beautiful parish, which enriches our faith, is in need of the following repairs and improvements: Church and School roofing Parking lots and driveways Heating and cooling systems Safety and security elements Retaining walls Outdoor fountain and benches Lighting Windows and doors Fencing and railings Carpeting, lighting and sound systems Exterior façade Playground Renovate the Parish Center Building. God created us to be in fellowship with one another. We are evaluating renovations to our Parish Center which was built in 1977 and not part of the campaign 20 years ago. With careful planning, we can create a parish home to meet the needs of Saint Anne s commissions, ministries, groups and staff. Allocation of space for meeting rooms and offices Kitchen and bathrooms Exterior façade Signage Faithfully support the Archdiocese of Chicago s To Teach Who Christ Is campaign. The Archdiocese of Chicago has embarked on a capital campaign entitled, To Teach Who Christ Is, to benefit Chicago Catholic education and faith formation. All 356 parishes in the Archdiocese are participating in this effort. YOUR ROLE We have a unique opportunity to shape the life of the parish now and into the future. To fully realize the vision presented here, an estimated $6 million above our offertory will be needed: As part of the Saint Anne Community, we value your input on this endeavor. This weekend, we will conduct a brief in-pew survey during Mass for a short moment to gain the parish s input on the upcoming campaign. As a parish, we must ensure that our community has the opportunity to express their thoughts. We invite you to join fellow parish leaders in being a significant part of this exciting project by participating in our survey. Thank you in advance for sharing your time and thoughts. Faithfully yours in the Lord, your Pastor, Father Bernie Pietrzak If you have any immediate questions, please contact Campaign Coordinator, Andrea Wirt, at alhdww@aol.com or Saint Anne Church September 18, 2016 stannebarrington.org 3

Faith Formation and Education Things have a price and can be for sale. But people have a dignity that is priceless and worth far more than things. - Pope Francis It s how most of us begin our morning: we put on clothes. We dress for work or school before a closet of choices - colors and styles. What do I have to do today? What will the weather be like? Every day, this is the normal way we put on our clothes. In April 2013, 1,133 people were killed, and over 2,500 were injured when a garment factory complex collapsed in Bangladesh. After learning that many of the workers made less than $60.00 a month, Pope Francis bemoaned: This is called slave labor. Today in the world, slavery is being committed against something beautiful that God has given us the capacity to create, to work, to have dignity. Our globalized economy brings us into relationship with people around the world. Yet, the marketplace hides these connections and the effects of our consumption choices. How can we be more aware as consumers of how our choices are affecting others? How can we clothe ourselves in compassion, clothe ourselves in Christ, in this rapidly-changing world? 7 Faith Formation and Education PEER MINISTRY KICKOFF MEETING SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 18TH A major component of Saint Anne Youth Ministry is the Peer Ministry program based upon a more traditional concept of the parish youth group. The 5:15 p.m. Sunday Mass is student-ministered. After Mass, high school students gather at the Parish Center for an evening of reflection, play and fellowship, from 6:30 p.m., until about 8:00 p.m. This program has proven to be a place where kids can comfortably hang out with other kids with a common church background (all students are accepted without regard to religious or non-religious background). It is casual, informal and fun, and there is no need to register attend as often as desired. Twice a year, Peer Ministry sponsors a Pancake Breakfast. For more information, contact Karen Poglitsch at or kpoglitsch@stannebarrington.org. 8 Faith Formation and Education SAINT ANNE PARISH SCHOOL NEWS EXTENDED DAY CARE What is Extended Day Care? Extended Day Care is an after school program for students to engage in activities with other students as part of an extension of the school day. The program runs from 7:00-8:00 a.m. and 3:00-6:00 p.m., Monday-Friday. There are only a few exceptions for after school care not meeting such as Parent/Teacher Conference days. A snack is provided to all students who wish to partake. There is also a period for quiet homework time with a licensed teacher in a separate room away from the students who do not have homework. What do students do at Extended Day Care? Activities include arts and crafts, imaginative Lego building, board games and outside play. On inclement weather days, we may use the gym for gross motor activities. We also have Movie Fridays and other special activities. Who can come? Students in any grade can attend Extended Day Care. We serve preschoolers through 8th grade. What is the cost? Extended Day Care is an inexpensive way for students to be looked after while parents are at work after the school day. We offer affordable rates and multi student discounts. A complete list of rates are on the school website. What is Homework Club? Homework Club is an extension to Extended Day Care and is offered on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 3:10-4:45 p.m. Students in Homework Club work on homework and are supervised by a licensed teacher. Snacks are served. Homework Club is a great way for students to obtain help in classes that they may need assistance with. It s a great way for students to go home with little to no homework so they can enjoy the rest of the day. Some testimonials from parents include: "I want to thank Saint Anne for its after school Homework Club, lead by Mrs. Grybos. This program has helped my son learn proper ways of completing his homework and studying for tests. We are so thankful for the Homework Club" Mrs. Eryka Accordino I have two girls who attend Homework Club. Both of them really enjoy going as they have the opportunity to do their homework with their friends, and if they have a question, there is a teacher in the room to ask. This service is a godsend. It's nice to pick up the kids from school, go home and make dinner knowing that homework is done no more stressing over homework. Thanks, Homework Club!! Mrs. Hayde Federighi What is the cost for Homework Club? The cost for homework club is $10.00 per session. Punch cards can be purchased for $ for-10 punches. For more information about Extended Day Care or Homework Club, please contact Mrs. Pat Rasheff at prasheff@stanneschoolbarrington.org or Ms. Mindy Grybos at mgrybos@stanneschoolbarrington.org. 8 Saint Anne Church September 18, 2016 stannebarrington.org

Sharing the Living Story By Clem Aseron Problem: Many scholars consider this one of the most difficult New Testament parables to explain adequately: Jesus seems to compromise with evil he seems to approve of the shrewdness of the self-interested steward he seems to recommend deviousness to the disciples: And I tell you, make friends for yourselves by means of dishonest wealth (v.9) he illustrates with a story of a cunning steward who made money from the owner by padding the bill he seems to tell his disciples: here s the model for you, be like the steward! Perhaps cultural/literary/linguistic insights will enlighten the text. The Culture: (A) Lectionary texts: (B) Bible texts (has verse #): 25TH SUNDAY OF THE YEAR, 2016 (135C) First Reading: Amos 8:4-7 Responsorial Psalm: 113:1-2, 4-6, 7-8. RX = Praise the Lord who lifts up the poor. Second Reading: 1 Timothy 2:1-8 Gospel: Luke 16:1-13 Please refer to (A) and (B) above when I cite verses in the commentary below. rich man = estate owner who leases land to farmers debtors = farmers of the land who agree to pay a fixed amount in produce i at harvest time steward (this word in the Greek text means estate manager) has authority from owner to transact business in his name dealt in land rentals, not money-lending was salaried, not dependent on his wits to survive financially did not benefit financially from the amount the renters paid to the owner was paid a specified fee by the renter was expected to customarily accept under-the-table arrangements from the renters, which clearly would not be reflected in the bill of accounting made to the owner cheats against the estate owner, as the passage indicates. master = owner of the land (see rich man) was noble (as opposed to ignoble) [note parallels: Chapter 15:11, father is noble, both sons are ignoble and Chapter 16:19, Lazarus is noble, rich man is ignoble] not partner-in-crime with his manager Luke uses the same contrasting literary device here: estate manager is ignoble and rich man is noble; there is no criticism of the rich man in the text was involved with the community, would therefore protect them if steward cheated them has bearing and manner that is noble (recall that the manager applied a surcharge). He dismisses manager rather than angrily denouncing him, punishing him and reporting him to the Romans. disciples = primary audience, (but see v.14, The Pharisees heard all these things ) community consists of: middle eastern peasants, villagers those who think and act as member of the community, who always only consider their effect on the group; they never act as individuals those who never act to isolate themselves from community (to be isolated is to be an outcast) [Recall the 3 parables last week (15:1-32); what effect does the loss induce; who rejoices when the lost is found?] 16 Saint Anne Church September 18, 2016 stannebarrington.org Continued on the following page

Sharing the Living Story those whose business is eventually known to the entire community, so the manager cannot openly cheat on the promissory note because owner and debtor everyone else will soon know those with Middle Eastern mindset regarding the key cultural value of honor/shame: all is done to avoid shaming the community others as well as self all that is done must secure honor for the community. Literary manager is fired on the spot therefore he has no more legal authority owner tells him at v.2: Prepare a full account of your stewardship (turn-in the books not balance the books ) manager offers no defense, thinks only of how to secure his future, not how to get his position back cultural expectation is for him to be fired, tried and jailed; instead, owner judges him and dismisses him then, amazingly, is merciful and generous, at v.8, he commended that dishonest steward for acting prudently manager maintains honor by not stooping beneath his dignity to beg which is shameful behavior manager must find means of sustenance; once it is known he has been dismissed for wasting owner s property, none will hire him manager risks everything on the mercy of the owner (which he has already experienced); if successful, he retains honor in the community note his manner: He acts as though he still has authority; swiftly, before the word gets out and he loses status or before the owner discovers him, he summons each singly so they cannot talk to one another and refuse to cooperate; after all, they, too, have a relationship with the owner which they cannot risk by acting dishonorably. The altering of the promissory notes appears to be legitimate! honor of everyone is upheld, even increased; the unsolicited reduction of the note benefits the renters; that favor gained by the steward on their behalf brings him stature; the owner is beneficent in his handling of the rents, so his honor is increased. There is cultural precedent: if there is a poor harvest owing in no way to the skill of the farmer, he can request a reduction in fee, for example, because of poor weather; here it is granted without the renter requesting it. The owner is given the books. He recognizes he is regarded as noble and generous for the reduction; he could renege and declare that the manager was acting after the fact thereby losing honor. Or he could keep quiet and thereby honor is upheld even increased for everyone; hence he commends the manager, praises him for his wisdom, that is, praises his skill in preserving himself by placing total trust in the person from whom he has already experienced mercy. Given our own cultural biases, it is difficult to unravel today s parable. Thinking about it in cultural/literary terms of Luke s time, particularly with insights from understanding their core value of honor/shame, allows us to see that our concepts of justice or our ideas of mercy are not the same as those of the kingdom. Luke was clear and emphatic. It is God who gives mercy; God s justice (righteousness) is present when there is right relationship among God s people and with God. If we wish to practice at doing justice and mercy, we must pick up the cross and follow Jesus. Almost as though he had the verses of today s psalm in mind, the blunt prophet Amos tersely castigates those who can scarcely keep the holy days let alone take care of the poor by fair sharing resources but instead, cheat them out of their meager means with false weights and measures exploitive prices; their only concern is profit. But at our own peril, we ignore these verses about the One who raises up the lowly from the dust (v.7-8) and the admonitions of Amos; if it is Father-God who has such concern for the poor, can we ignore our role in directly or indirectly contribute to their status? Paul is strong in asking us to pray for all people but particularly for political leaders and those in power so that everyone may benefit from righteous behavior that will bring right balance to affairs and material things such that we may lead a quiet and tranquil life in all devotion and dignity (v.2). Lots of words. So What? What does our heart say to our mind as we sing the psalm refrain today? Praise the Lord who lifts up the poor. i For example, a kor of wheat = bushels; at v.7, the debtor tenant farmer would have agreed to repay the master for the use of the land between bushels.
