2 GIVING BIRTH TO GOD By Ron Rolheiser, OMI I did my doctoral thesis on the classical, philosophical proofs for the existence of God. The concept had always intrigued me: Can you prove that God exists? After researching the thought of Aquinas, Anselm, Descartes, Leibnitz and Spinoza, all of whom assert that you can prove the existence of God through rational argument, what was the conclusion? Can you prove that God exists? No, at least not in a way that would compel anyone to make an act of faith on the basis of a mathematical or scientific argument. God can t be proven in that way, albeit these proofs point to some important things. The existence of God can t be empirically proven because God doesn t work that way. He doesn t appear in the world as the end to a mathematical equation. God, as we know through the way Christ was born, comes into our lives at the end of a gestation process. That also describes how faith is born in our lives. God never dynamites his way into our lives with a force so powerful that we can t resist. The divine never takes us by storm. No. God enters the world in the same way that Jesus did on the first Christmas. God is gestated in a womb and appears as a helpless infant who has to be picked up, nurtured and coaxed into adulthood. The presence of God in our world, at least within the dynamics of the incarnation, depends upon a certain human consent and cooperation. For God to take on real flesh and power in the world, we must first do something. What? The answer lies in the way Jesus was born. Mary, Jesus mother, shows us a pattern for how God is born into our world and how faith is born in our lives. What s the pattern? When we look at how Mary gave birth to Jesus, we see that there are four moments in the process: Impregnation by the Holy Spirit, gestation of God within one s body and soul, the stretching and agony of giving birth and the nurturing of an infant into adulthood. What s implied in each of these? Impregnation by the Holy Spirit: Mary, we are told, became pregnant by the Holy Spirit. What an extraordinary notion! This doesn t just mean that Jesus didn t have a human father but also that Mary let the seed of God s spirit (charity, joy, peace, patience, goodness, long-suffering, fidelity, mildness, faith and chastity) take root in her that it began to grow into actual flesh. Gestation of God within one s body: As we know, pregnancy is not followed immediately by childbirth. A long, slow process first occurs, gestation. In the silent recesses of her heart and body, and surely not without the normal morning sickness that accompanies pregnancy, an umbilical cord began to grow between Mary and that new life. Her flesh began to give physical sustenance to the life of God and this steadily grew into a child which, at a point, as in all pregnancies, demanded to be born into the world. The agony of giving birth: Only with much groaning and stretching of the flesh can a child emerge into this world. It is always excruciatingly painful to birth something to the outside world, to take what s precious inside and give it birth outside. Mary, despite all the over-pious treatises that would make Jesus birth something unnatural, experienced the normal birth pains common to all mothers. Nothing secretly gestated is born into the world without pain, Jesus included. Nurturing an infant into adulthood: Annie Dillard once suggested that we always find God in our lives as Jesus was found in Bethlehem on Christmas, a helpless infant in the straw who must be picked up and nurtured into adulthood: God s works are as good as we make them. That God is helpless, our baby to bear, self-abandoned on the doorstep of time, wondered at by cattle and oxen. Mary gave birth to the baby, Jesus, but what she ultimately gave the world was the adult, Christ. Like all mothers, she had to spend years nursing, cajoling, teaching and nurturing an infant into adulthood. In that pattern, the incarnation, in looking at how Mary gave birth to Christ, we are given a blueprint that invites imitation not admiration. Mary is the model of faith. What she did each of us, too, is called upon to do, namely, give birth to God in our lives. Christmas is for marveling at what once took place, but it s also for imitation, for continuing to give God flesh in the world. How do you prove that God exists? You don t. The object of our faith and worship doesn t appear as compelling proof at the end of a rational experiment. God has to be gestated into the world the same way Mary did years ago at the first Christmas. 2 Saint Anne Church January 1, 2017 stannebarrington.org

3 Worship LITURGY CORNER By Rory Cooney When Iʹm worried and I canʹt sleep, I count my blessings instead of sheep, And I fall asleep counting my blessings. (Irving Berlin, Count Your Blessings) In the middle of this wonderful season, getting to spend time with my family and friends, I look back on the year and especially the last few weeks leading up to Christmas, and I know I have so much to be grateful for. I need to let you know this so that you can be grateful, too, for the wonderful people who serve Saint Anne in so many different ways that make the liturgy happen every week. No one can come into the Gathering Space or the church or even drive by the church without acknowledging the work of a lot of people, including Dave and Sarge and their team, setting up the lights and the crèche, the men who decorated the 30 foot trees out in front and Karyl and Chuck Schubel and the Art and Environment team who work year round but particularly during this season, to make the church extraordinarily beautiful and conducive to prayer. There are over two hundred Liturgical Ministers who responded to the call to serve during the holidays: Lectors, EMs, Mass Coordinators, Ushers, Greeters and Servers who do their work and make our worship go smoothly. My dear colleague Georgene Farman orchestrates all that with style and grace, week in and week out. Danielle and the Children s Choir did such a nice job for the Family Mass on Christmas Eve. Our Priests bring us together, voice our prayers, call forth our responses, open up the scriptures and the life of the church for us and, with our Deacons, bring the service of their lives to the table of the Word and the Eucharist for us. I feel the need to thank the Sharing Board, too, for the Sharing Tree program and reminding us through it and through other events that Church isn t enclosed by the walls of Saint Anne any more than God is. And thank you, too, House of Hope and Hope Ministries, for the witness of your lives that when God said through Isaiah that the meaning of fasting and acts of worship is only revealed in the way we feed the hungry and clothe the naked. And of course, I have to thank all the wonderful Choir members, Cantors, Musicians and friends who have spent hours preparing and rehearsing for the celebrations we share every week and with even more intensity during Christmas. They work jobs, too, and spend a couple of hours a week rehearsing in addition to showing up to sing at Mass on Sunday. It is a great honor to make music with them and with you to worship God and inspire one another with song. Terry and I have a holiday habit of watching a few movies every year: the Reginald Owen version of A Christmas Carol, for instance, and of course, Scrooged, Elf and A Charlie Brown Christmas. But another one we never miss is White Christmas because it reminds us of our homes of origin and the stars of song and dance that made our parents happy. When we watched it this year, it struck me again, listening to Irving Berlin s great score, how much memory and gratitude are part of this season. My blessings are all wrapped up in being part of this great parish and the people who built it and make it great. To me, a blessing isn t so much health or wealth or influence. It s being in a place where I can experience the reconciling, healing, life-creating presence of God and that, for me, is Saint Anne. So, heading into this new year and one more week of the Christmas season, I urge you to consider all that and to join me, Bing, Rosemary and Irving Berlin: If youʹre worried and you canʹt sleep, Just count your blessings instead of sheep, And youʹll fall asleep counting your blessings. 6 Faith Formation and Education WOMEN S MINISTRY PROGRAM AT SAINT ANNE PARISH Saturday, January 21st, :00-11:00 a.m. Divine Mercy Heals Our Memories with featured speaker, Dawn Eden Goldstein How do our memories affect our life of faith? When Dawn was a new convert to Catholicism, she thought the pain of her past prevented her from intimacy with God. But, with the help of Pope Francisʹs Jesuit spirituality, she learned that the truth was the reverse: ʺWhen I unite my own wounded heart with the wounded and glorified heart of Jesus, his wounds heal mine.ʺ This talk is drawn from Dawnʹs book, Remembering Godʹs Mercy: Redeem the Past and Free Yourself from Painful Memories. Born into a Jewish family in New York City, Dawn lost her faith as a teenager and became an agnostic. At the age of thirty-one, Dawn underwent a dramatic conversion to Christianity that ultimately led her to enter the Catholic Church. In 2016, Dawn became the first woman to earn a canonical doctorate in Sacred Theology from the University of St. Mary of the Lake. She is now a resident lecturer in Dogmatic Theology at St. Maryʹs College, Oscott, the seminary of the Archdiocese of Birmingham, UK. Dawn writes books under her pen name, Dawn Eden, which include The Thrill of the Chaste and My Peace I Give You: Healing Sexual Wounds with the Help of the Saints. 8 Faith Formation and Education SPRED COMMUNITIES OF FAITH, COMMUNITIES OF FRIENDS Inclusion for Persons with Developmental or Intellectual Challenges When Pope Francis visited America, he often left his motorcade or procession to reach out to a child with disabilities, hold that child and bless him or her. By words and example, the Pope has calls us to extend the love and the care of Christ to the weakest among us, including those who have developmental disabilities. At Saint Anne, we respond to that call through our SPRED ministry which welcomes young adults with developmental disabilities to develop a greater sense of God s love. IF YOU FEEL INSPIRED BY THE POPE S EXAMPLE, PLEASE CONSIDER JOINING THE SPRED MINISTRY. This is not a request to teach; it is an invitation to experience the peace and beauty of God s presence in our lives in a very unique way. We encourage both men and women to join us. Anyone over the age of 21 is eligible to become a volunteer Helper Catechist, and no experience with persons with disabilities is needed. We currently have a waiting list of young adults, ages 17-21, who want to join Saint Anne SPRED but cannot until we locate one-on-one Helper Catechists for them. As a Helper Catechist, you will not have to lead any lessons but rather will form a relationship of friendship and inclusion with one of our young adults. ARE YOU INTERESTED IN LEARNING MORE? Please contact any member of our SPRED Leadership Team. 9 Faith Formation and Education THE HOSEA RETREAT: A SILENT DIRECTED RETREAT JUNE 8TH-10TH, 2017 New this year is our Hosea Retreat for graduating high school seniors and college age students. This retreat is intended to take our students to the next level of spiritual development. Since the time of Jesus, silence has been recognized by Catholics as the premier manner of fostering a relationship with God. The title of the retreat is taken from the second chapter of the prophet Hosea in which God tells Hosea of his plans for Israel (for us): Therefore, behold, I will allure her, bring her into the wilderness and speak kindly to her. In Sacred Scripture, the wilderness represents a place of solitude and silence where God can have us entirely alone for the purposes of hearing God s voice. Each of the retreatants will meet individually with an adult spiritual director each of the three days to talk about their own personal spiritual journey with the adult. To supplement these conversations, there will be a series of short reflections offered by the adults on the spiritual life. In addition, there will be reading materials on spirituality for retreatants to reflect upon. The rest of the time will be for walking the grounds, napping and sharing meals together. The Hosea Retreat will provide a great opportunity for graduating seniors to deepen their life of faith as they anticipate leaving home. It can provide college age young adults a chance to renew and deepen their faith. The retreat will take place at the Jesuit Retreat House, in Barrington Hills. It will begin Thursday, June 8th, at 1:00 p.m., and conclude after lunch on Saturday, June 10th. The cost will be $ The spiritual directors will include three of our Saint Anne priests as well as other parishioners who do spiritual direction. Applications can be found on the Saint Anne website scroll down to Upcoming Registrations. The deadline for applying is Wednesday, May 10th. We look forward to having you on this important retreat. 10 Faith Formation and Education MIDDLE SCHOOL JOURNEY CHRISTMAS SERVICE PROJECT Our Journey teens gathered on a recent Sunday evening to create some Christmas joy for those less fortunate in our community. They brought cookies to share and made 58 plates of beautiful holiday cookies! Most of the plates went to the Project Hope Food Pantry with the remainder being sent to JourneyCare Hospice, Alden Estate Rehabilitation and our own Barrington Police and Fire Departments. They also decorated 139 bags and filled them with toiletries to gift to our senior friends at Greencastle. Carefully-crafted ornaments were used to decorate the Project Hope cookie plates and bring Christmas greetings to Hospice, the Police and Fire Departments and others. Upon receiving her cookie plate, one Project Hope Food Pantry client excitedly exclaimed that she hadn t had home-baked cookies in over 20 years! We look forward to sharing these celebrations with those who, in some way, are part of our community. Therefore, please note the following: Visitation of the Sick: If you or a family member are in a local hospital or are homebound and would like a visit from a minister of care or a priest, call Mary Ellen Johnston at Baptism: Our Baptism ministry is pleased to help your family prepare for the special event of your child s entrance into our faith community. Two Baptism sessions are required for parents baptizing their 1st child Parents who have had a Baptism at another Catholic Church and are now wanting to baptize a child at Saint Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before scheduling Baptism Parents who have already attended Baptism preparation at Saint Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before scheduling Baptism Information for setting a Baptism date will be given at the meeting or at the time of the interview. Call the parish office at Marriage: To be married at Saint Anne, the preparation process should begin 7 months to one year prior to the wedding date. Please call the parish office to secure a date as soon as possible. Membership at Saint Anne is not a requirement. We look forward to helping you during this time of preparation for the vocation of Christian marriage. First Eucharist and First Reconciliation: These sacraments are typically celebrated in second grade. Candidates must be registered parishioners and complete the two-year preparation program. For more information, call the Faith Formation and Education office at Confirmation: This sacrament is celebrated in high school. Candidates must be registered parishioners and complete the two-year preparation program. For more information, call the PATHS office at Reconciliation: Saturdays, 9:15 a.m. until all are heard or by appointment. Adult Christian Initiation: If you are looking for a place to belong or a church community to share questions and beliefs, perhaps you would like to find out more about what it means to be a Catholic Christian. Saint Anne would be delighted and honored to share the gift of faith and fellowship with you. Call Michael Beard at for information regarding the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults). Registration: To enter into our faith community, please attend an information/registration session at 9:30 a.m. in the Hospitality Room, followed by the 11:00 a.m. Mass on the 1st Sunday of the month, except on holiday weekends when there are no sessions.
