2 Wellstreams Living Waters for the Journey in Faith By Sister Lauretta Leipzig WITH MARTHA S HANDS AND MARY S HEART Have you ever been in a situation where you started to complain, but then you were corrected by the reality of the situation and that brought everything back into a new consideration? The driver you judged harshly who whipped past you on the shoulder shortly down the road, you discover he passed you to get to his family who was in an accident ahead. The friend who didn t answer your call you discovered she had a serious family situation that needed her time and involvement. Sometimes we get consumed by our own situations. We get so caught up in our own life that we forget others have situations too. That is because many of us keep our days so full of things to do, we don t have time to be truly concerned about anything or anyone else. A wise person once realized, I no longer have a life. I have a schedule. This may be true but is it healthy? Is it what God wants of our lives? When we keep ourselves so focused on our own needs and schedules, we put blinders on to the rest of the world. We get so surrounded by our own personal stuff that we don t and sometimes can t see what others are doing or need. The scripture story of Martha and Mary is one that may have something to say to us. We readily use the sisters dynamics as mindless reference such as She is just a Martha! or She is so a Mary! Of course, we know the story so well, we don t see some things as a lesson for us. Maybe we need to view the story with new eyes. Jesus, the local Rabbi, was coming to Martha and Mary s house. He knows them well, visits them often and seemingly likes being with them. Martha seems to be a homebody. She is frantically preparing the meal, doing the work, fulfilling the standard role for women at that time. She could be a gracious hostess if only she had some assistance. Lord, don t you care that I need help? She is focused only on herself; she doesn t see what s going on around her. We might say that Martha has a serving ministry but not a servant s heart in this confrontation. Mary, on the other hand, is going against social norms, doing something quite radical since traditionally, this is the role of the male. She sits at the feet of Jesus, striving to learn his lessons. Let us admit that when we are engulfed in our own schedules, we miss out on a lot; we re just too busy. But isn t it true that all we have to do makes good sense 2 Saint Anne Church November 8, 2015 stannebarrington.org (caring for our families, giving our children our time or an appreciation for music, sports, extra curriculars, being involved in volunteer work, social engagements, caring for elderly parents)? This is all good! Yet, good things can fill up our lives to the point where we neglect the spiritual dimension. The shell of a schedule we create around the 24 hours in a day can create a blindness to or a distraction from the spiritual dimension of our lives. We don t have time to disconnect and relax; we don t take time for prayer and our spiritual lives. We just keep going and then, like Martha, we say, Lord, don t you care? What did Jesus say to Martha and, most likely, would say also to us? You are worried and upset about many things but only one thing is needed. Take time to sit at the feet of Jesus. Without a doubt, we need Marthas and Marys in the world. We need people who can provide great hospitality (a spiritual gift from God) and who know how to welcome others. But Martha was so busy, she missed the gift she was giving. When our schedules are so full, we, too, miss out on the reason why we are doing what we re doing. So we have to also take time to step back and realize who we are serving. Is it our schedules and the demands on our lives or are we serving the one who created us, the one who gave us the spiritual gifts we possess? We desperately need Mary also as our model. If we don t take time to center our lives on the God who granted us life to begin with, life will just pass us by. So we must ask ourselves: Are we Martha or Mary or are we hopefully and thankfully blessed with a combination of both? Martha was hurrying Mary was hearing Martha was busy with the work Mary was attentive to the word Martha was laboring Mary was learning and loving Martha was bothered Mary was blessed Martha was worrying Mary was worshipping Martha was distracted by many things - Mary was concerned about one thing In a busy and hectic Martha world, we need a Mary heart. And so, we pray today: May God give us Martha s hands to serve and Mary s heart to love!

4 Faith Formation and Education SAINT ANNE DAYS OF RENEWAL LOVE IS OUR MISSION The Family Fully Alive! Monday-Wednesday November 9th-11th 6:00-8:00 p.m. We all come from some kind of family, each with its own strengths, struggles and unique challenges. God s grace is at work in all of our families. Each family is a domestic church, a small cell of the larger universal church. God calls us all to be family; we are called to love, called to forgive and heal, called to the joy of our mission. These three evenings are designed to reflect the themes of the World Meeting of Families held in Philadelphia in September and the Synod on the Family which occurred in October in Rome. Monday, November 9th Call to Love A Catholic theology of love, marriage and family begins at the beginning with the belief that we were created in love for love by our loving God. For most people, we first experience God s love in the family; it is here that we begin to learn what love is and how God loves us. A loving marriage and family mirrors the very life of the Trinity. Each family has its own dysfunctional qualities, but by bringing our diversity to God, we are able to be Love for one another. Tuesday, November 10th Call to Forgive and Heal The Church is called to be A Home for the Wounded Heart. How do we meet and forgive without judgment? How do we welcome, encourage and begin to heal after the pain of alienation? Tonight, we will also lift up and recognize some of the groups struggling to find their place in the Catholic Church Community today: divorced and remarried, gay Catholics, mentally ill, homeless, jobless, etc. Wednesday, November 11th Call to Joy of Mission Recognizing our brokenness and diversity, we have a mission to love. We are all called to be part of the family of the Church; some are called to marriage and parenthood, others to the single life and still others to religious life. Each of us has an important part in the Body of Christ. We are here to help bring light to people s lives through our faith and love in action. Love is our mission, and it is by loving God and loving one another that we will be fully alive! 4 Saint Anne Church November 8, 2015 stannebarrington.org

11 Community Life HOSPITALITY AFTER MASS The Women s Club is pleased to continue coordinating the hospitality effort in the Gathering Space after the 9:00 and 11:00 a.m. Masses. On Sunday, November 15th, volunteers from the Sharing Board will be represented. The Sharing Board s program makes the Gospel vision of love real through effective action. The program provides a concrete way of expressing this vision by sharing our faith, building bridges through friendship and understanding and sharing gifts, money, food, clothing and ourselves. MINISTRY HOSTING SCHEDULE Sunday, November 15th: Sharing Board; Sunday, November 22nd: Pancake Breakfast MASS OF REMEMBRANCE The Saint Anne Women's Club will hold a Mass of Remembrance in the chapel on Tuesday, November 17th, at 7:00 p.m. After Mass, we will convene in the Gathering Space. Please bring a new toy for Catholic Charities and an appetizer to share. BLOOD DRIVE NEXT SUNDAY This is the time of the year when we think about Thanksgiving. We have so much to be thankful for, in particular, our good health. We can actually multiply what we have been given by sharing our blessings with the members of our community who are now in need. Next Sunday, November 15th, from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., in our school cafeteria, we will sponsor our fall blood drive. PLEASE plan to donate. Our last blood drive was so successful. We saw many new donors, and over 100 critically ill patients were helped. That s the spirit of Saint Anne. As our community ages, we require more complex medical procedures, so the need for blood increases. There is no substitute for blood. Without our help, local shortages would be inevitable. We need your help. If you have not donated before, it s easy. Bring your driver s license. You must be at least 17 years old and weigh at least 110 pounds. Most medications, such as blood pressure medicine or aspirin, will not disqualify you. The entire process takes about 40 minutes from start to finish, and the blood collection itself takes 15 minutes or less. It will only take a little extra time next Sunday, November 15th, so please become someone s hero, and discover the particular joy of giving blood. Blood is truly the gift of life. 12 Sharing the Living Story By Clem Aseron (A) Lectionary texts: (B) Bible texts (has verse #): 32ND SUNDAY OF THE YEAR, 2015 (155B) 1st Reading: 1 Kings 17:10-16 Psalm 146:7, 8-9, RX = Praise the Lord, my soul! 2nd Reading: Hebrews 9:24-28 Gospel: Mark 12:38-44 Please refer to (A) and (B) above when I cite verses in the commentary below. The psalm response proclaims: Praise the Lord my soul! But there does not seem to be much in this gospel pericope that would lead us to sing to our souls that we should praise the Lord. Mark tells his community the story in which is Jesus still in the temple area but this time, he is not confronting the religious authorities directly; he speaks to the crowd, warning them against the practice of abuse of power by pointing to this condemnable practice of those among the Jerusalem scribes who go about seeking affirmation of their honor (vv.38 and 39) which could enhance their potential to act corruptly (v.40). Remember the dependent and inferior status of women, particularly widows. If there were no sons or male in-laws to protect her, 1 the property would be administered by those trained to read and speak about scripture and laws the scribes. Cultural customs, of course, prevented women from pleading their own cause to male authority. This legal arrangement gave the scribe much power over property including the right to a percentage of the property; if only that portion were claimed, it would probably be exploitive since the culture has customarily appointed a business manager over her affairs. She obviously has no son since the property would have devolved to him and there would not be a problem. Mark continues warning his community about exploitation in the next story, at v.42, of someone on the lower extreme of the economic scale: a poor widow. We tend to think of this as a nice story in which Jesus lauds as commendable the practice on the part of this widow. Appreciation of the cultural backdrop leads us in a different direction. Recall that tithing was a legal obligation. This was not a voluntary contribution. At v.44, we learn that in order to meet this legal obligation, she gave the sum of money that was all she had, her whole livelihood. The system seems to be exploitive! So neither the scribes nor the Temple authorities was following the command to care for those without means. The widows in both cases (v.40 and 42) are simply the metaphors for the marginalized, the disenfranchised, the ones without power. We don t learn whether these two kinds of widows are cared for by God or by Jesus. The lesson must therefore come from the story of the faulting by Jesus of 12 Saint Anne Church November 8, 2015 stannebarrington.org

13 Sharing the Living Story the scribes 2 and the Temple authorities (both with high status) for their behavior toward these widows which is contrary to the law that demands preferential treatment because they lack status. In contrast, is the story in the first reading about the pagan widow struggling to eke out food in gentile Phoenicia is well cared for by Elijah, the Lord s prophet. Despite her very dire position about which she declares that she and her son will soon die from lack of any more food, Elijah assures her that the Lord, the God of Israel, would for sure care for them. And the Lord indeed provisions them as well as Elijah for a whole year. Who is this God of Israel who is so beneficent that even pagans those not of the covenant community are given care? This is a classic example of how paying attention to the social and cultural background of those years has the potential of revealing how we have perhaps domesticated the gospels by using only modern lenses to interpret them and in so doing, rob them of their power. Seen against the underlying cultural mosaic casts an entirely different light on how we interpret what was meant by the ancient author writing to his particular community; doing so expands our ability to address our own cultural dilemmas. SO WHAT?? The next 3 Sundays of November are the last of this Liturgical Year B. November 29th is the First Sunday of Advent, the start of Liturgical Year C, in which we take up the gospel according to St. Luke. Where is the Church taking us as we wind down this year? The readings from the Lectionary seems to speak of an inclusive God who cares for all of God s creation. Are there choices to be made in our lives that can be informed by a meditative reading of these gospel pericopes from St. Mark? Works consulted: The Cultural World of Jesus, Cycle B by John J. Pilch; Say to This Mountain, Mark s Story of Discipleship by Ched Myers, et. al 1 Recall the underlying custom regarding property rights discussed at 12:19 that gave an excuse to the Sadducees to pose to Jesus the dilemma there. 2 Note Mark s irony here: scribes are the very ones who are learned in the scriptures and the ones to whom all turn to learn of the rule of scripture. We look forward to sharing these celebrations with those who, in some way, are part of our community. Therefore, please note the following: Visitation of the Sick: If you or a family member are in a local hospital or are homebound and would like a visit from a minister of care or a priest, call Mary Hoffing at Baptism: Our Baptism ministry is pleased to help your family prepare for the special event of your child s entrance into our faith community. Two Baptism sessions are required for parents baptizing their 1st child Parents who have had a Baptism at another Catholic Church and are now wanting to baptize a child at Saint Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before scheduling Baptism Parents who have already attended Baptism preparation at Saint Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before scheduling Baptism Information for setting a Baptism date will be given at the meeting or at the time of the interview. Call the parish office at Marriage: To be married at Saint Anne, the preparation process should begin 7 months to one year prior to the wedding date. Please call the parish office to secure a date as soon as possible. Membership at Saint Anne is not a requirement. We look forward to helping you during this time of preparation for the vocation of Christian marriage. First Eucharist and First Reconciliation: These sacraments are typically celebrated in second grade. Candidates must be registered parishioners and complete the two-year preparation program. For more information, call the Faith Formation and Education office at Confirmation: This sacrament is celebrated in high school. Candidates must be registered parishioners and complete the two-year preparation program. For more information, call the PATHS office at Reconciliation: Saturdays, 9:15 a.m. until all are heard or by appointment. Adult Christian Initiation: If you are looking for a place to belong or a church community to share questions and beliefs, perhaps you would like to find out more about what it means to be a Catholic Christian. Saint Anne would be delighted and honored to share the gift of faith and fellowship with you. Call Michael Beard at for information regarding the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults). Registration: To enter into our faith community, please attend an information/registration session at 9:30 a.m. in the Hospitality Room, followed by the 11:00 a.m. Mass on the 1st Sunday of the month, except on holiday weekends when there are no sessions. For further information, call the parish office at * THE NEXT NEW PARISHIONER WELCOMING SESSION AND REGISTRATION WILL BE ON SUNDAY, DECEMBER 6TH *
