2 HE BEGAN TO TEACH THEM By Fr. John Foley, S.J. Jesus cures a deaf man in this Sunday s reading and receives admiration from the crowds. We tend to think that healing people was a main goal in Jesus life, and I suppose it was, in a way. But after this Sunday, there are only four more healings by Jesus in Mark s Gospel, and we are only in the seventh chapter out of sixteen. Earlier in this Gospel (from the first chapter up to here), he worked so many cures that people were mobbing him. And that was the trouble. Jesus was in danger of becoming famous as a wonder-worker. The people were besieging him at every stop, thinking their lives would be saved if only they got their health back, if only they could find relief in daily life, or if only well, you name it. He was in danger of having the famous fifteen minutes of fame. Does fame really compare with God s love for the world and its peoples? Jesus must have thought not. In Mark, he stopped the miracles and began a new phase of his mission. He turned his face toward Jerusalem. And the cross. This change of direction will come next week. Suddenly and without warning, Jesus will say to the disciples, The Son of Man is to be handed over to men and they will kill him, and three days after his death, the Son of Man will rise (Mark 9:31). What more shocking statement could the invincible leader and healer make to them? How can death and love go together? Here is one example. A man and wife told me of the death of their tiny son and how they had prayed so hard for his healing. Their prayers were not answered. Then the quiet realization came that God had been present throughout the dying, that God had been immersed in their son s life and death and that this intimate presence was enough, more than enough. Their sorrow was cradled, and their son was safe in God s arms, even during the suffering. Truth is, a human person is built to be loved by God, not merely to have good health, riches or reputation. Real life consists of exchanging love with God and with others, not just in seeming to be a leader or a success. There is a greater good than these. It is a relationship with God, a seeking of the one who is already close. This intimate relationship sends us out to help heal the world and give God s love to it. Miracle cures help for a while, but pretty soon, the suffering world has to be faced in its full suffering self. So Jesus moves toward the events that will show God s solidarity with us in our suffering, our rejections and in that famous event which each and every one of us will face sooner or later: death. Beyond cures, which are wonderful yet partial, God gives us companionship within each instant of our life and of our death! This Sunday at Mass, let us ask ourselves whether the intimate presence of God is part of the goal of our own lives. Do we know that Christ is deeply involved with us? Do we let his love flow into us and through us to others or must it fight its way around us? Let s pray to hear as the deaf man finally did. 2 Saint Anne Church September 6, 2015 stannebarrington.org

15 Faith Formation and Education DO YOU HAVE A FAMILY MEMBER WHO COULD BENEFIT FROM SPRED? The Saint Anne SPRED Team extends a special invitation to parents of children with developmental disabilities to contact us about the opportunities for those children to be a part of SPRED. SPRED is a program developed by the Archdiocese of Chicago to foster the religious development of persons with developmental disabilities. A SPRED group starts with eight volunteer catechists who want to deepen and share their faith. The group then welcomes up to six Friends with intellectual or developmental disabilities, each of whom is paired with a Helper Catechist. Through the experience of friendship in these relationships, our Friends with special needs discover a place where they belong and can enjoy meaningful relationships which help them realize their own giftedness and dignity. Through participation in a SPRED group, our Friends are better able to celebrate the sacraments and enter into the worship experience of the Church. We encourage families with developmentally-delayed members to contact us. We will facilitate placement of your family member in an age-appropriate SPRED group. If you are the parent or caretaker of an individual with developmental disabilities, please contact us! We want to understand your child s needs and share with you the wonderful opportunities that SPRED offers. If you would like to join this ministry, please contact us - we are always eager for volunteer catechists to join our team! 16 Sharing the Living Story By Clem Aseron (A) Lectionary texts: (B) Bible texts (has verse #): TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY OF THE YEAR, 2015 (128B) 1st Reading: Isaiah 35:4-7a Psalm 146:7, 8-9, 9-10 Rx = Praise the Lord, my soul! 2nd Reading: James 2:1-5 Gospel: Mark 7:31-37 Please refer to (A) and (B) above when I cite verses in the commentary below. Once again, geography is a key to Mark s theological intent. Last week, the setting was at Gennesaret in the western or Judean (Jewish) side of the Sea of Galilee. There, Jesus bests the challenge of the Judean establishment, the Pharisees and the scribes regarding ritual impurity (Mark 7:1). Although the Sunday Lectionary 1 does not use the bible text at 7:24, note that Mark shows Jesus traveling to Tyre in Phoenicia which is Gentile (pagan) territory. After a clever exchange of challenge/riposte, Jesus yields to the plea of the pagan Syrophoenician woman to cure her daughter. 2 ) In today s pericope, Mark tells his people 3 that Jesus leaves pagan Tyre by way of Sidon (still the land of Gentiles) in order to cross to the east side of the Jordan River and thereby enter the region of the Decapolis, which takes him deeper into the area influenced by pagan culture. This is perhaps a strange path to take to reach the Decapolis, but it keeps Jesus in Gentile territory for the entire trip. Here Jesus heals a deaf and mute man right in the very midst of heavy Greek influence of language, culture, religions and customs. In choosing today s combination of pericopes from James and Mark, the framers of the Lectionary show Jesus defining the God to which the Hebrew scripture refer this Sunday in Isaiah and Ps In this setting in Markʹs chapter 7, this God who will come to save, the one who will open the eyes of the blind and the ears of the deaf, loosen the tongue of the mute and make the lame leap is the God not only of the Jew, the Chosen People but is the God of the gentiles as well! 4 Jesus proclaims it very clearly in the cultural context of his own audience and later, Mark traces it clearly in the cultural context of his own community: this God is the God of inclusion. Even the outsider Gentile is welcomed; this speaks volumes to the Judean ear! Little wonder that many are outraged or that many leaders the elite, the powerful, the guardians of orthodoxy found clustered in Jerusalem feel threatened and want to dishonor or even kill Jesus. This explanation, given by Mark to his audience sometime around the time of the destruction of the Temple in 70 CE, most likely served to further assure the former gentiles in his own Christian community that they were indeed included in the kingdom. It emphasized as well to the community s Jewish Christians that they were to embrace those who once were considered outsiders. Once again, an evangelist underscores that Jesus is counter-cultural. In a society rigidly structured by traditions that tended to maintain hard, impenetrable boundaries, Jesus declares that in God s society, 16 Saint Anne Church September 6, 2015 stannebarrington.org

17 Sharing the Living Story there are no boundaries, no insiders, no outsiders by reason of birth, lineage or circumstance. The framers of the Lectionary aptly chose James for the Second Reading which decries the use of favoritism based on externals rather than using the heart 5 as you adhere to the faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ. James polarizes it: have you not made distinctions among yourselves and become judges with evil designs? Did not God choose those who are poor to be heirs of the kingdom that he promised to those who love him? It is easy to only focus on the miracle story of the healing of the deaf mute in this gospel pericope. Yet the intent of the Lectionary in selecting the three other scriptures seems to integrate well with Mark s message. Despite the cultural bias that Mark s first audience has when they hear the text, Mark is also clear: there is no one automatically outside the group because of their station in life. All these scriptures, all this explanation. SO WHAT?? In what ways does our society condition the way we act? For example, are we conscious that we may be restricted by society s lens when we look at hot button debates: over national health policy or immigration or the movement of large numbers of migrants or the acceptance of the LGBTQ community or.? What might prevent us from hearing God s word as we ponder these issues? What do we mean when we sing the refrain for today s psalm in response to its verses? What might our prayer be in the coming election season? 1 The Church s book of scripture readings that contain pericopes biblical passages selected and edited that may also be discontinuous as in the Isaiah pericope today. 2 Mark 7:24. In this interchange between a Gentile and Jesus, he starts by stating that his ministry is first to the children, that is, to Israel (the insiders, the Chosen) and not to the dogs (the outsiders, the Gentiles). 3 Recall that Mark writes to a largely Gentile Christian community; therefore, these words are comforting since they are assured that they are indeed included in the kingdom despite the ancient Judean (Jewish) claim to being the only ones to be Chosen by God. 4 Paul makes this claim about the entire Christian community. See Galatians 3:26 ff. 5 See again the gospel pericope of last week: All these evils come from within and they defile.(7:23) Works consulted: Ched Myers et al: Say to This Mountain; Irene Nowell: Sing a New Song; John Pilch: The Cultural World of the Prophets, Cycle B and The Cultural World of Jesus, Cycle B. We look forward to sharing these celebrations with those who, in some way, are part of our community. Therefore, please note the following: Visitation of the Sick: If you or a family member are in a local hospital or are homebound and would like a visit from a minister of care or a priest, call Mary Hoffing at Baptism: Our Baptism ministry is pleased to help your family prepare for the special event of your child s entrance into our faith community. Two Baptism sessions are required for parents baptizing their 1st child Parents who have had a Baptism at another Catholic Church and are now wanting to baptize a child at Saint Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before scheduling Baptism Parents who have already attended Baptism preparation at Saint Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before scheduling Baptism Information for setting a Baptism date will be given at the meeting or at the time of the interview. Call the parish office at Marriage: To be married at Saint Anne, the preparation process should begin 7 months to one year prior to the wedding date. Please call the parish office to secure a date as soon as possible. Membership at Saint Anne is not a requirement. We look forward to helping you during this time of preparation for the vocation of Christian marriage. First Eucharist and First Reconciliation: These sacraments are typically celebrated in second grade. Candidates must be registered parishioners and complete the two-year preparation program. For more information, call the Faith Formation and Education office at Confirmation: This sacrament is celebrated in high school. Candidates must be registered parishioners and complete the two-year preparation program. For more information, call the PATHS office at Reconciliation: Saturdays, 9:15 a.m. until all are heard or by appointment. Adult Christian Initiation: If you are looking for a place to belong or a church community to share questions and beliefs, perhaps you would like to find out more about what it means to be a Catholic Christian. Saint Anne would be delighted and honored to share the gift of faith and fellowship with you. Call Michael Beard at for information regarding the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults). Registration: To enter into our faith community, please attend an information/registration session at 9:30 a.m. in the Hospitality Room, followed by the 11:00 a.m. Mass on the 1st Sunday of the month, except on holiday weekends when there are no sessions. For further information, call the parish office at * THE NEXT NEW PARISHIONER WELCOMING SESSION AND REGISTRATION WILL BE ON SUNDAY, OCTOBER 4TH *
