THINKING SMALL By Ron Rolheiser, OMI A year ago, I was at a religious education conference which had Maya Angelou as its keynote speaker, a black woman of considerable talent and remarkable graciousness. Among the many things she shared was this story: When I was six years old, she said, one summer day on the playground, a little boy called me a nigger. Fall came that year, winter came that year, spring came that year and brought with it all kinds of flowers, and summer came in all its splendor and beauty but, in all that richness, the only thing I can remember from that whole year is being called a nigger! Hearing her, I was reminded of a story I once heard from John Patrick Gillese, one of our Western Canadian writers. He tells the story of going home to the small town in Alberta where he had grown up, for a funeral of an elderly woman. Among the many messages of condolence that were sent to her family, there was a note from a family who now lived in British Columbia and who had left that small Alberta district some 30 years before. The note expressed sympathy to the family on the loss of their grandmother and added simply: We will never forget how kind she was to us back in the 1930s. Here was a family who remembered a small act of kindness, whatever it was, fifty years later. These stories, although they make the point in opposite ways, teach the same thing: Small acts of cruelty or kindness leave their effect long after the effects of events of seemingly much greater importance have passed away. There is, I believe, a profound lesson in this. The Kingdom of God, as Jesus assures us, is about mustard seeds, about small seemingly unimportant things, but which, in the long run, are the big things. Not much in our world today helps us to believe that. Most everything urges us to think big and to be careless about small things. The impression is given us that what is private in our lives is little and unimportant. Likewise, what is played out on the smaller stage of life in the more domestic areas of family, marriage and our exchanges with our neighbors and colleagues is also deemed to be of little consequence. The big stage is what is important. What mark have you left in the world? What have you achieved on the bigger stage? What has been your involvement in the great causes? Nobody cares about your little life! Private morality, private grudges, the little insults that we hand out, our many angers and resentments, the small infidelities within our sexual lives, the many little acts of selfishness and, conversely, the small acts of sacrifice and selflessness that we do and the little compliments that we hand out, these are not valued much in our culture. As a song suggests: Our little lives don t count at all! I remember a young man, very dedicated to social causes, once asking me: Do you really think that God gives a damn whether or not you say your morning prayers or whether or not you hold some small grudge or whether or not you are always polite to your colleagues or whether or not you are always chaste sexually? That s petty, small, private stuff that deflects attention off of the bigger moral issues. Well, I believe that God does care and that God cares a great deal because, in the end, we care, and small things, as these stories illustrate, effect a great deal. I have always found it ironic that we easily forget the big things, the events that seem of great importance. Who won the Nobel Prize for literature two years ago? Who won the Academy Awards last year? Who won the Super Bowl three years ago? Who won the World Cup 10 years ago? Who starred in that Broadway (or West End) play three years ago? It s funny how quickly we tend to forget these things. It is also curious what we do not forget. We tend to forget quickly who won such or such an award or who starred in such and such a movie or play. But we remember, and remember vividly, with all the healing and grace it brought, who was nice to us all those years ago on the playground at school. We remember who encouraged us when we felt insecure. Conversely, we also remember, and remember vividly, with all the scars it brought, who laughed at us on the playground, made fun of our clothes, or who called us stupid. Falls come, winters come, springs come, summers come and go, and sometimes, the only thing we can remember from a given year is some small mustard seed, of cruelty or kindness. 2 Saint Anne Church July 23, 2017 stannebarrington.org

Worship LITURGY CORNER By Rory Cooney Dis MASS al, Mission and the Final Final FINAL Prayer Here s a quick recap: The Mass is made up of two major rites, the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist The Liturgy of the Word begins with the First Reading and ends with the General Intercessions The Liturgy of the Eucharist begins with the Preface of the Eucharistic Prayer and ends with the Communion Prayer Each of these two rites has a Preparatory Rite that can be considered part of it The Preparatory (Introductory) Rite for the Liturgy of the Word begins with the Opening Hymn and Procession and ends with the Opening Prayer The Preparation Rite for the Liturgy of the Eucharist begins with the procession with the gifts and ends with the Prayer over the Gifts (the secret prayer) This leaves us with the part of the Mass we are now considering, the Dismissal Rite, which begins with (optional) announcements, a final greeting and blessing and a command to go. Along the way, every part of the Mass includes a ritual greeting, an exchange of this dialogue or a variant of it: P: The Lord (or Peace ) be with you. A: And with your spirit. This greeting calls attention to the presence of the Lord at critical times in the liturgy: in the gathering of the people with the priest at its beginning, in the proclamation of the Gospel by the deacon or priest, in the beginning of the Eucharistic Prayer, before the kiss of peace the precedes Communion, and finally, before the dismissal of the assembly to love and serve the Lord. The dialogue above may seem random or repetitious, but it is far from that. It is different from and infinitely more important than just Good morning or anything like that. It intends to make us aware that Christ is among us, where two or three are gathered in my name, and present in the gathered assembly with our diverse gifts and in the priest as the presiding and ordained minister of the sacrament. I bring this up to demonstrate that The Lord be with you at the end of Mass is a reminder that in the dispersal of the assembly to home, family, work, school and commerce, the Lord is present in a variety of gifts that we have been given for the service of the world. It s more than good bye, more than wake up and stand up. It s a way of saying, Time to go, but we re not going alone. We re going together, and Christ is coming with us. Analogous translations of The Lord be with you can be imagined for each time that it is properly used. There follows the blessing about which I wrote last week. Then comes the final words of the Mass: The Mass is ended; go in peace, with our response, Thanks be to God. First, it is actually from this rite that the Mass gets its name. It appears that we get our word Mass from the Latin dismissal, Ite, missa est, where the word missa morphed as it came into English into Mass. The word means, literally, sent, and comes from Roman civil society and simply means the end of a meeting or gathering. Go, it s the end, would be a literal translation. But as Pope Benedict XVI and others have pointed out, over the years, Christians have some to associate the word with the mission of Jesus and therefore, the mission of the Church: the verb mittere in Latin means to send, and (ecclesia) missa estʺ means the church is sent. So there s a connection between the meaning of the Eucharist and being sent: the whole rite is oriented toward the end, that is, to going out into the world again! Second, the rites of the Mass each end with some kind of collect, some kind of final prayer. The Introductory Rites end with the collect; the Liturgy of the Word ends with the Prayer of the Faithful (General Intercessions); the Preparation Rite ends with the Prayer over the Gifts, the Liturgy of the Eucharist ends with the Communion Prayer. What prayer does the dismissal rite end with? I would say we might be able to identify two. One is the assembly s response, Thanks to be God, for what has transpired in the previous hour or so. In a Eucharist (thanksgiving) rite, Thanks be to God seems like a really good final prayer. But even more so is the life of the assembly that leaves, the life we go outside to our homes and jobs to pray always by what we do and say, until we gather the following week. Finally, you may have noticed in the outline of the dismissal rite from two weeks ago that there is no closing song listed. That s going to be what I talk about next week. 4 Saint Anne Church July 23, 2017 stannebarrington.org

Human Concerns July 15, 2017 Dear Father Bernie, You and the Saint Anne community have been such faithful partners in mission. Thank you for taking a leadership role in our shared efforts to build faith, inspire hope and ignite change among Americaʹs poorest communities. We are honored and humbled by your generosity. I want to especially thank the Saint Anne community for your recent gift of $28,449.13, received by Catholic Extension on June 5th, Your gift will support the ministry of the Hermanas Dominicas de Fatima and help them build a Casa de Salud at their mother house in Puerto Rico. As you observed in Sisters Yelitza and Maria del Mar during their visit to Saint Anne, the Hermanas are full of life! Your gift will allow their contagious enthusiasm to continue spreading among those who need it most. In the ten years that I have been president of Catholic Extension, I have been able to see the incredible impact that the church has on America s most vulnerable communities. Faith enables those in challenging circumstances to know that the realities facing them now are not the only realities possible. Your partnership in American missions is indeed changing the future. Please give a special word of thanks to Adrienne and Paul Kalmes, along with the members of the Faithjustice Committee. Working with them during the last two years has been a tremendous blessing. Thank you again for your wonderful generosity. You are leading a movement to revitalize the Catholic Church and to transform the future of our faith. May God bless you! Gratefully, Rev. John J. Wall President All of us at Catholic Extension cannot thank you enough for forging this deep bond between Saint Anne s and Extension, and all that your remarkable gift expresses of your confidence in our Mission! 150 South Wacker Drive Suite 2000 Chicago, IL catholicextension.org Saint Anne Church July 23, 2017 stannebarrington.org 5

Sharing the Living Story By Clem Aseron (A) Lectionary texts: (B) Bible texts (has verse #): SIXTEENTH SUNDAY OF THE YEAR, 2017 (106A) Wisdom 12:13, Responsorial Psalm 86:5-6, 9-10, RX = Lord, you are good and forgiving. Romans 8:26-27 Matthew 13:24-33 Please refer to (A) and (B) above when I cite verses in the commentary below. In last Sunday s gospel (Matthew Chapter 13, verses 1-23), the word parable is used 4 times. Today s gospel passage continues directly with verses in which the word parable occurs 5 times for a total of 9; it seems to be important. Recall the definition of parable I quoted last week: it is a metaphor or simile drawn from nature or common life, arresting the hearer by its vividness or strangeness and leaving the mind in sufficient doubt of its precise application to tease it into active thought. It is a story of a situation which, because it is very familiar to the hearer, is used to illustrate another reality which is not as easy to describe in common, down-to-earth terms. A metaphor is a statement that identifies one thing with another: You are the salt of the earth... (Matthew 5:13) in which the disciple is identified with the common item, salt. A simile compares one item with another by using the word like or as: The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed... (v.31). The three parables (vv.24b; 31b and 33b) and the allegorical explanation at vv continue to ask the reader to look at the mystery of God s kingdom (or as Matthew puts it, the Kingdom of Heaven). It is tempting to immediately consider the first parable in the light of its allegorical explanation but let us look at what the literary/cultural setting reveals. v.24 crowds = includes the disciples; kingdom of heaven = to remain sensitive to his Judean readers, Matthew commonly substitutes the euphemism, heaven, for the word God. Recall that Judeans (Jews), considered that the word God was the personal name of their diety and that this word was so holy that they dared not utter it; instead, they used the word Adonai (Lord) out of deference. v.25 weeds = the Greek word refers to darnel, a poisonous weed that in its early stages, so closely resembles wheat that it cannot be readily distinguished from it; therefore, for the present, the weeds should be left (v.29) so as to not risk the wheat itself. v.30 harvest = at the harvest is a Hebrew scripture metaphor for the time of judgment (see Jeremiah 51:33ff. and Joel 4:13ff.). The householder (the Judge) at v.27) will command the harvesters to bundle the weeds to be burned but to gather up the wheat into the householderʹs barn. Commonly, all agricultural products not useable as food were burned as fuel. Matthew writes to answer a problem in his community. The parable is a response to this problem: how to respond to the fact that some accept and others reject the Good News? The answer seems clear: patience and tolerance in the present time while leaving until the end time, and to the Master of the harvest, the judgment and the consequent separation of good and evil. The accepters of the Gospel (the disciples) are not to risk rooting out the good by mistake; the use of darnel as an example is a quite vivid metaphor. To the Judeans, this resonates well with the pericope from Wisdom (see 1st Reading) 16 Saint Anne Church July 23, 2017 stannebarrington.org

Sharing the Living Story... For your might is the source of justice; your mastery over all things makes you lenient to all. But though you are master of might, you judge with clemency, and you taught your people, by these deeds, that those who are just must be kind... It is echoed in the psalm refrain: Lord, you are good and forgiving and at its v.15, You, O Lord, are a God, merciful and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in kindness and fidelity. We are to leave these weeds until the very end: after all, the Lord who is good and forgiving says you gave your children good ground for hope that you would permit repentance for their sins (Wisdom 12:19). The other two parables return us to the power of God working among us. No matter the relatively modest beginning (small mustard seed) or even an undesirable nature (in that culture yeast = a corrupting influence in some contexts), the Lord accomplishes great things: a tree so large that birds of the air come and nest there or yeast so powerful that it required an immense amount of flour (50 lbs!) that would yield enough bread to feed more than a hundred! These three parables are no more counter-cultural for us than they were for the people in Matthewʹs time. Look at the scene set at v.25: everyone was asleep... enemy came... sowed weeds all through the wheat In other words, this was no spontaneous, accidental act of nature. Hence, the very natural question: Do you want us to go and pull them up? The cultural expectation was that the handiwork of the enemy would be immediately dealt with in order to avoid shame and thus guard honor. Matthewʹs Jesus responds, No, for in gathering the weeds, you would uproot the wheat along with them. Let them both grow together until the harvest; then at harvest time, I will tell the reapers... Next week, note that while the word parable does not appear, Matthew continues with the use of metaphor to explain the kingdom of heaven. So What? Who is the Lord of the harvest? What is the expectation in our own culture, say, for the treatment of those who commit a capital crime? Saint Anne Church July 23, 2017 stannebarrington.org 17

We look forward to sharing these celebrations with those who, in some way, are part of our community. Therefore, please note the following: Visitation of the Sick: If you or a family member are in a local hospital or are homebound and would like a visit from a minister of care or a priest, call Mary Ellen Johnston at Baptism: Our Baptism ministry is pleased to help your family prepare for the special event of your child s entrance into our faith community. Two Baptism sessions are required for parents baptizing their 1st child Parents who have had a Baptism at another Catholic Church and are now wanting to baptize a child at Saint Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before scheduling Baptism Parents who have already attended Baptism preparation at Saint Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before scheduling Baptism Information for setting a Baptism date will be given at the meeting or at the time of the interview. Call the parish office at Marriage: To be married at Saint Anne, the preparation process should begin 7 months to one year prior to the wedding date. Please call the parish office to secure a date as soon as possible. Membership at Saint Anne is not a requirement. We look forward to helping you during this time of preparation for the vocation of Christian marriage. First Eucharist and First Reconciliation: These sacraments are typically celebrated in second grade. Candidates must be registered parishioners and complete the two-year preparation program. For more information, call the Faith Formation and Education office at Confirmation: This sacrament is celebrated in high school. Candidates must be registered parishioners and complete the two-year preparation program. For more information, call the PATHS office at Reconciliation: Saturdays, 9:15 a.m. until all are heard or by appointment. Adult Christian Initiation: If you are looking for a place to belong or a church community to share questions and beliefs, perhaps you would like to find out more about what it means to be a Catholic Christian. Saint Anne would be delighted and honored to share the gift of faith and fellowship with you. Call Michael Beard at for information regarding the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults). Registration: To enter into our faith community, please attend an information/registration session at 9:30 a.m. in the Hospitality Room, followed by the 11:00 a.m. Mass on the 1st Sunday of the month, except on holiday weekends when there are no sessions.
