The Clarion Volume 14, No. 26 PENTECOST SUNDAY May 20, 2018 Our Parish Mission Led by the Spirit, the Catholic community of Saint Anne strives to live the example of Jesus, who said, I came so that you might have life, and have it more abundantly. (John 10:10) Liturgy Schedule Monday-Friday: 8:15 a.m. Saturday: First Saturday: 8:15 a.m. Reconciliation: Saturdays, 9:15 a.m. until all are heard Mass of Anticipation: 5:15 p.m. Sunday: 7:15, 9:00, 11:00 a.m., 5:15 p.m. Saint Anne Catholic Community 120 North Ela Street, Barrington, IL stannebarrington.org

MARGARET BUCKSTAFF BUSINESS AND OPERATIONS MANAGER Dear People of Saint Anne, While reflecting on today s gospel, it struck me that so much of the heart of Jesus is present in the Saint Anne Community. As the Father has sent me, so I send you. That is the foundation of our faith and our Faith Community. I see it every day in my work as Business and Operations Manager. The hundreds of volunteers who make this parish vibrant have heard that call. I am blessed to work with many of them. In my role in Finance, there are so many people who ensure that our parish runs with best practices in mind. First, the ushers who take up the collection and secure it in our tamper-proof bags and lock it up until the next step in the process. Then, our dedicated team of counters who come on a regular basis to open envelopes and make sure dollar amounts are recorded for posting to parishioner s accounts so that your year-end statements are correct. We follow these procedures to ensure that the donations that you have shared with Saint Anne are protected and shared with the correct entity including Sharing and Special Collections such as Lenten Alms. So many other volunteers are seen by others when they work in the parish. This group is dear to my heart because they are so devoted and quietly give their time with no real acknowledgement. I would like to share their names with you so that you could personally thank them for their commitment. They are Earl Billman, Frank Comber, Elaine Conrad, Tim Dunn, Ed Gehring, Vince Giamalva, Carol Helmers, Don Kenney, Dick Kuhn, Evelyn Kurfess, Tom Walter and Jim Zelsdorf. You are all the very best. Our Parish Finance Council, chaired by David Wirt, oversees all the income and expenses of the parish. We meet quarterly as needed so that I can present where we stand financially and the forecast of things to come. In the past two months, I have met with each member of the Core Staff to put together the budget for Because of variables that can happen unexpectedly, such as a drop in enrollment at the school or a down swing in attendance and therefore, Sunday income, our staff has to be willing to adjust their budgeted expenses to compensate. I have been proud of their ability to work together to see the larger picture of the parish beyond their different ministries. Our Finance Council can be a great resource in these times of flux. In addition, we oversee the financials of extraordinary ministries such as Hope Ministries, Women s Club, STAGG, Home & School, the Athletic Association and the collection of tuition for the parish school. 2 Saint Anne Church May 20, 2018 stannebarrington.org As co-animator of the Community Life Commission, I see the tremendous amount of time and talent needed to put on a successful event within the parish. Fundraising events are not only a time to socialize and build community but also a very important part of our yearly budget. These events take an intense amount of meeting and planning, but even Music Under the Stars takes a village. None of this could happen without the dedication of so many parishioners. A perfect example of this dedication will be seen at our parish picnic on Saturday, June 9th, when over 100 volunteers will work in shifts to put on a meaningful and fun-filled event for the entire parish. I look at the volunteers who helped us raise over $7,000,000 for our Legacy of Faith campaign to enhance our facilities at Saint Anne. They made phone calls and home visits, which are not easy for even the most outgoing person. Because these men and women put themselves out there for the good of our parish your response was overwhelming. As part of my job as Operations Manager, I help to oversee these projects, as I, with the help of our maintenance and front office staff, oversee the ordinary day to day operations, vendors, scheduling and set up of the parish events and meetings. It is an overwhelming job to keep up with all the many ministries and their need for space within the parish. If not for these five employees, we would not be able to achieve the task. Human Resources also falls under the umbrella of the Business Manager. We have just under 100 full and parttime employees in the parish and school, including the aides and substitute teachers. Our payroll is bi-weekly throughout the year, with some employees being paid until the end of the school year and others through the summer months. In addition, with the help of the Archdiocese, we coordinate benefits for all full-time employees, including Health, Dental, 403B and other elective benefits. A new software program was installed a few years ago to give employees a better sense of what is offered and what needs to be done at open enrollment every June to ensure they are taking full advantage of what the Archdiocese and Saint Anne has to offer. It is in this part of my ministry that I feel fulfilled while helping employees and their families adjust to changes in their living and benefit needs. I deal with the Archdiocese for Workers Compensation and all insurance claims for the parish as well. I feel extremely blessed to have ministered at Saint Anne for the past nine years. Our pastor, Father Bernie, has done much to enhance my faith life over the years, and to work among such a wonderful and dedicated staff and faithfilled and enthusiastic volunteers renews me every day.

Worship LITURGY CORNER By Rory Cooney SINGING THE FAITH: SEND OUT, SEND OUT In 2013, our son Desi graduated from Carmel Catholic High School, in Mundelein, and somebody (probably Lara Lynch, a good friend to me and to Saint Anne parish and, at that time, CCHSʹs liturgical music teacher) asked me if I would write a responsorial psalm for the Baccalaureate Mass. So thatʹs what I did. It would be fair to say that there are plenty of settings of Psalm 104, the psalm used for Pentecost and for a lot of Confirmation celebrations. At Saint Anne, Iʹve used the Peloquin setting from Songs of Israel, Tom Kendziaʹs energetic version from his Canticle collection, entitled Come, O Spirit of the Lord, and many others from Gather and even from Respond and Acclaim over the years. One setting that I wrote in college was part of the NALR Assemblybook psalms and eventually was published in the Cries of the Spirit Volume 1 collection of my NALR/ OCP psalm settings, the collection that included my settings of Psalm 40 Here I Am, Lord and Psalm 72 Justice Shall Flourish. Entitled Send Out Your Spirit, it was written for piano/guitar, flute and string quartet with cantor and assembly. Itʹs a very lyrical treatment of the psalm, I think evoking for me the creative Spirit, the spirit of tranquility and renewal. But of course, thatʹs not the entirety of the Spirit s story. One thing that is true of renewal, as I said in my blog a year or two ago for Pentecost, is that very often, for something new to be built, other structures need to come down. So I was getting more uneasy with the former version I wrote and wanted to try something a little more adventuresome. When the opportunity came up to try to write something for Desiʹs Baccalaureate Mass, I decided it was a good sign. The psalm translations in the lectionary, taken from the Revised Edition of the New American Bible, are not translated with any kind of ear to music. Musicians lean toward another approved translation, known as the Grail Psalter, based on the Jerusalem Bible translation and utilizing sprung rhythm, a meter which approximates natural speech, used by the poet Gerard Manley Hopkins, among others, and which gets its name the Grail Society. I had made a short list of psalms I wanted to reset with the Revised Grail translation, and this was one of them. While a cleaner version of the Grail Psalter had come under fire for having an ʺinclusive language agenda,ʺ the revisedrevised version had finally been approved for liturgical use. (Side note rant: No one was apparently bothered that gender-exclusive language is also an agenda, and that, in fact, language is too fluid a container in which to store orthodoxy, certainly useless for containing God. Be that as it may ) In order to enter the narrow gate of Catholic worship, at least, it behooves one to take the path of ecclesiastical approbation. So this setting of Psalm 104 is in a soft gospel-rock style. When writing a song for teens or that one hopes will be used in worship for teens, I suppose I try to split the difference so that the musical style will appeal across a range of musical tastes and be accessible to all kinds of choirs. My friend Tom Kendzia has told many workshop audiences (my paraphrase here) to stop planning confirmation liturgies with the bishop in mind and start planning them with the teens, the confirmands, in mind. This makes a lot of sense to me, and I imagine it also makes sense to a good number of bishops who would prefer a happy, singing assembly than a dour, bored one. So Send Out, Send Out tries to walk that line as well, using some familiar gospel-rock motifs that allow the tonality to sneak back and forth easily between F major and F minor. As with many of my psalm settings, the cantor part is a bit more challenging than some. My hope, especially when working with a liturgical text over which I have no control, is always to evoke participation through melody and rhythmic interest, to provide energy and interest through choral parts that enhance that melody, and let the emotional content of the psalm text flow through a more complex or artistically demanding part for the cantor. I hope that the melodic contours and emotional life of the tune will have a lot of cantors saying to their music directors, à la Liz Lemon, ʺI want to go to there.ʺ Send Out, Send Out is recorded on our 2017 album To You Who Bow. With the printed music still not quite ready for prime time, the digital version is not yet released to itunes or Amazon. You can buy it at giamusic.com, and there are a few copies left in the parish office. (Occasionally, I recycle material from my blog, rorycooney.blogspot.com. This article is taken from the April 13, 2015 posting.) 4 Saint Anne Church May 20, 2018 stannebarrington.org

Sharing the Living Story By Clem Aseron PENTECOST SUNDAY OF THE LITURGICAL YEAR 2018 (63B) First Reading: Acts of the Apostles 2:1-11 Responsorial Psalm 104:1ab, 24ac, 29b-30, 31, 34. RX = Lord, send out your spirit and renew the face of the earth. Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 12:3b-7, Gospel: John 20:19-23 (A) Lectionary texts: (B) Bible texts (has verse #): Please refer to (A) and (B) above when I cite below the text of the Lectionary or the Bible. One usual approach to the text from Acts of the Apostles is to focus on the coming of the Holy Spirit who rendered intelligible the proclamation of the mighty acts of God 1 made in different languages to all the varied people who had come from every nation under heaven 2 ; recall that theophanies (manifestations of God) were always accompanied by graphic natural phenomena like violent wind 3 (compare Job 38:1), and fire 4 (compare Exodus 3:2; 19:16 ff). In today s gospel pericope 5, that same Holy Spirit gives the disciples the power to forgive sin and the debts attached to those sins. 6 If you take into account the social situation in which the followers of Jesus find themselves at this time and also recall the cultural and religious background of the Jewish feast of Shavuot (Pentecost), a broader biblical context emerges that challenges our present understanding of church community. Shavuot or Feast of Weeks has its origin in an ancient Israelite agricultural observance that required that the first fruits of the harvest be offered to God. 7 Reading together the following two passages from Leviticus echoes what we remember about the God who disdains empty symbolic 8 gestures: the offering of grain is not enough! Shavuot (Lev 23:15-16) Beginning with the day after the Sabbath, the day on which you bring the wave-offering sheaf, you shall count seven full weeks [on] the fiftieth day you shall present the new cereal offering to the Lord. Jubilee (Lev 25:8-10) 8 Seven weeks of years shall you count 10 This fiftieth year you shall make sacred by proclaiming liberty in the land for all its inhabitants. It shall be a jubilee for you, when every one of you shall return to his own property, everyone to his own family estate. Note in the second passage above (Lev 25:10) that the Lord commands Israel to apply Jubilee economics to the harvest. This has implications for us as well: see in Acts that the Luke story of being made free by the Holy Spirit culminates in the addition of many to the community of the baptized 9 and note also the radical re-ordering of the life of the community at verses 42-47; especially note v.44: All who believed were together and had all things in common; they would sell their property and possessions and divide them among themselves all according to each one s need. 16 Saint Anne Church May 20, 2018 stannebarrington.org

Sharing the Living Story There is an assurance if we choose this very counter-cultural stance: we will have the same peace that Jesus gives in John s story (vv. 19, 21 and 26) to the disciples who were hiding in fear of the larger society s animosity for their stance about the Messiah. This is a peace not of the world 10 but a peace that empowers us to stay in solidarity with The Christ while we are in the world 11. There is another assurance, an assurance that comes from authority in a real sense. John is unmistakable that it is God who sent Jesus 12 and that very same authority is given by Jesus to the disciples: As you sent me into the world, so I send them into the world 13. This empowers them... that the love with which you loved me may be in them and I in them 14. This makes larger the sense of the last verses of today s pericope: When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained. This is about liberation from sin and the consequences of sin; it is about our being freed by God through the sacrifice of Jesus, without pre-conditions or even questioning whether we merit God s mercy. All three of these pericopes (Acts, Corinthians, John) sing about God s mighty act in giving the Holy Spirit to the disciples of Jesus the Spirit who empowers them for mission at John 20:21, 22, 23. So What? But what of ourselves; what do we do with the reminder that the Holy Spirit has gifted and has empowered us and that in the many communities in which we move, we are able to bind or release... with our mouths, our attitudes, our financial positions, our gender, our education, our job position, our social class? 1 Acts of the Apostles 2:11c 2 Acts 2:5 3 Acts 2:2b 4 Acts 2:3 5 A biblical passage, sometimes of non-consecutive verses (see 1 Corinthians 12 above), sometimes with added words, e.g. in the same Corinthians pericope above the words Brothers and sisters do not appear in the biblical text. 6 John 20:23 7 Exodus 23:16a 8 Hebrews 10:8 9 Acts 2:41 10 John 14:27 11 John 16:33 12 see especially 17:8 13 John 17:18 14 John 17:26 Saint Anne Church May 20, 2018 stannebarrington.org 17

We look forward to sharing these celebrations with those who, in some way, are part of our community. Therefore, please note the following: Visitation of the Sick: If you or a family member are in a local hospital or are homebound and would like a visit from a minister of care or a priest, call Mary Ellen Johnston at Baptism: Our Baptism ministry is pleased to help your family prepare for the special event of your child s entrance into our faith community. Two Baptism sessions are required for parents baptizing their 1st child Parents who have had a Baptism at another Catholic Church and are now wanting to baptize a child at Saint Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before scheduling Baptism Parents who have already attended Baptism preparation at Saint Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before scheduling Baptism Information for setting a Baptism date will be given at the meeting or at the time of the interview. Call the parish office at Marriage: To be married at Saint Anne, the preparation process should begin 7 months to one year prior to the wedding date. Please call the parish office to secure a date as soon as possible. Membership at Saint Anne is not a requirement. We look forward to helping you during this time of preparation for the vocation of Christian marriage. First Eucharist and First Reconciliation: These sacraments are typically celebrated in second grade. Candidates must be registered parishioners and complete the two-year preparation program. For more information, call the Faith Formation and Education office at Confirmation: This sacrament is celebrated in high school. Candidates must be registered parishioners and complete the two-year preparation program. For more information, call the PATHS office at Reconciliation: Saturdays, 9:15 a.m. until all are heard or by appointment. Adult Christian Initiation: If you are looking for a place to belong or a church community to share questions and beliefs, perhaps you would like to find out more about what it means to be a Catholic Christian. Saint Anne would be delighted and honored to share the gift of faith and fellowship with you. Call Michael Beard at for information regarding the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults). Registration: To enter into our faith community, please attend an information/registration session at 9:45 a.m. in the Hospitality Room, followed by the 11:00 a.m. Mass on the 1st Sunday of the month, except on holiday weekends when there are no sessions.
