3 S T E WA R D S H I P N E W S 3 "What can I do to be a good steward and disciple of Jesus?" SMG 50TH ANNIVERSARY Parish Picture Directory - IT S NOT TOO LATE!! You can still schedule a photography session for the upcoming dates listed below. We are partnering with Lifetouch to create a parish family picture directory. Photography sessions will be held in Piper Hall on several dates in November with easy online scheduling. Visit or follow the link from our parish website. We will also have appointment sign-up opportunities after Mass. Our goal is to have EVERY family participate and be in the directory, which we will place in the church time capsule at our parish picnic. Every family participating will receive a free 8x10 photo and a picture directory. **There is no obligation to purchase photos. STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS We may long to hear the Lord say to us, Well done, good and faithful servant, as He does with the first two servants mentioned in the Parable of the Talents in today s Gospel from Matthew. However, although the third servant did not squander or waste the gifts (talents) he had received, the Master s reaction was not the same. As we have often stated, stewardship is an active way of life. There is nothing passive about it. The Lord expects us to do things, to take the gifts we receive and to share them and multiply them, as was the case in the first two servants cited in the parable. If we really wish to hear the Lord say, Well done, good and faithful servant to us when we are finally judged, we need to do something to earn that praise. The key word in that sentence is do. There is nothing spiritual or abstract about being ready for Jesus return and judgment of us. God has gifted us in a multitude of ways. We need to recognize those gifts; acknowledge those gifts; be grateful for those gifts; and most of all use those gifts to benefit the Church and others. What have we done with our time, our money, and our abilities? In our Church we recognize and point to sins of omission that is, things we did not do, but should have. Like the first two servants in the parable, it is not just a case of preserving what God has given us, it is a case of using it, increasing it, and returning it to the Lord. HOLIDAY ASSISTANCE The St. Maria Goretti Men s Club has been at the forefront of our parish service organizations for over 40 years, providing our parishioners with opportunities for fellowship, spiritual growth & service. In memory of Mike Theobald and Bill Fleming, two men who personified service at SMG, we are pleased to further serve our community by providing assistance to low-income families and seniors to help brighten their Christmas. Applicants must be registered members of St. Maria Goretti Catholic Parish. Applications are in the parish office and in the brochure rack in the back of church. Mass in French/La sainte messe en français Saturday, December 16th at 11:00 a.m. for students of St. Mary s High School open to all the parish! 33RD SUNDAY ORDINARY TIME "A man going on a journey called in his servants and entrusted his possessions to them." In today's Gospel parable, this man represents God, and the servants represent us. The story makes a clear point about the importance of putting the gifts God has given us to good use. Unlike the first two servants, the third servant chose not to make a return on his "talent." Thus we can understand the frustration of the master. He trusted this servant, and the fellow let him down. Remember, this all began with an act of trust when the master handed over care of his things. The fact is that the third servant did not take good care of what he was given. What have we been given? Some gifts from God we all share in common: life and salvation. But others differ from person to person. We each have our own set of "talents": our personal skills, our material blessings, our education, family background, and so on. Some have more, and some have fewer. But the point is that we are called to make the most of what we have, whatever that may be. Perhaps the starting point for making a return on God's investment in us is to recognize that what we have is really his! In a sense, our gifts and skills, even our lives, are all "on loan" from God. He is generous in sharing his life and his blessings with us. And, like the parable's master, he is quick to praise and reward our efforts. But when we choose to be "wicked, lazy" servants, taking everything for granted and not using our gifts for God's glory, then "even what [we have] will be taken away." What we bury underground is as good as gone. So let's bring our gifts into the light of day by sharing them with others and making the best possible use of all we've received. (480) x50 ECUMENICAL AND INTER FAITH UPDATE The Church promotes unity among all the followers of Christ which flows from our common baptism and seeks the fullness of unity which is a condition of evangelization. The restoration of unity among all Christians is one of the principal concerns of the Second Vatican Council. Division damages the holy cause of preaching the Gospel to every creature. Thus we are asked to pray faithfully that unity will be achieved by those separated. The Church of Phoenix is called to participate in the quest for unity by promoting ecumenical and inter-religious relations as mandated by Vatican II. The Church has urged the faithful to seek unity with her separated Christian brothers and sisters and respect the truth found in all religions. It is essential that each parish as part of its mission seek ways to further unity with all Christians and non-christians. As part of this call we at St. Maria Goretti Parish join the Diocese of Phoenix in this quest. Calling all elves! Join us to start the Christmas season by helping others. Santa s Workshop will open at 8 AM December 2, 2017 in Piper Hall. We will start unloading the trailer and shed and sorting the boxes and setting up the hall and then filling 1760 gift bags for those less fortunate. The recipients range in age from toddlers to seniors. All ages are welcome to help. Children under 12 need to bring an adult with them if possible. Lunch will be served. We look forward to seeing you even if just for a few minutes Merry Christmas! ADOPTION GUADALUPE CAN OUTREACH BE AN OPTION For years, St Maria Goretti parish has been helping to bring the blessings of the Christmas season to 30 families in Guadalupe. We live in an affluent city but some of the families that we help still live in houses with dirt floors. Every year the food collected the first Sunday in December is given to Guadalupe Outreach. Anything you can give is welcome but each family is given certain specific items and if not donated, will have to be purchased by the Outreach coordinator. When shopping for items for the December food drive, please remember these items: coffee (3lb bag), sugar (5lb bag), flour (5lb bag), instant oatmeal, tomato sauce, hot chocolate mix, cooking oil, salt, mayonnaise, peanut butter (large), canned goods (beans, peas, carrots, corn, peaches/fruit), canned chicken, Black Forest canned ham (3lbs). Put a note on your refrigerator or on your phone and help any way you can. If you would like to sponsor a food box for an individual family, or would like to make a donation, please call Lois Lovett Thank you for your generosity toward those in need.
