3 S T E WA R D S H I P N E W S 3 "What can I do to be a good steward and disciple of Jesus?" DANCING WITH GOD When I meditated on the word Guidance, I kept seeing "dance" at the end of the word. I remember reading that doing God's will is a lot like dancing. When two people try to lead, nothing feels right. The movement doesn't flow with the music, and everything is quite uncomfortable and jerky. When one person realizes that, and lets the other lead, both bodies begin to flow with the music. One gives gentle cues, perhaps with a nudge to the back or by pressing lightly in one direction or another. It's as if two become one body, moving beautifully. The dance takes surrender, willingness, and attentiveness from one person and gentle guidance and skill from the other. My eyes drew back to the word Guidance. When I saw "G": I thought of God, followed by "u" and "i". "God, "u" and "i" dance." God, you, and I dance. As I lowered my head, I became willing to trust that I would get guidance about my life. Once again, I became willing to let God lead. May God's blessings and mercies be upon you on this day and everyday. May you abide in God, as God abides in you. Dance together with God, trusting God to lead and to guide you through each season of your life. SPECIAL NEEDS APPEAL NEXT WEEKEND Please note that the Special Needs Appeal gives assistance to the church in Latin America, the church in Africa and the church in Eastern Europe. Church in Latin America: In response to the critical situations of the people who form the Church in Latin America, for over 40 years the Church in the United States has collaborated with our neighbors in the South. The collections makes possible grants to the local church, through the Bishops, which have aided immeasurably in the development of the work of the church in that region. Church in Africa: Spiritually rich, but desperately poor. "The critical challenges and enormous potential facing Africa today serve as the opportunity for and test of our mutual solidarity. Our response to this vocation of solidarity with the Church and peoples of Africa enables us to express love 'in deed and in truth' (1 John 3:18), a love that creates no borders and sets no limits to what might be accomplished together in Christ. Church in Eastern Europe: The great needs of the Church in Central and Eastern Europe were recognized more than two decades ago with the fall of communism, and they still remain. In most parts of the region, the Church cannot yet support its own renewal and growth. You can give faith to a new generation through scholarships for ministry formation, social programs, and essential pastoral projects. Please be generous in your support of the Collection for the Church in Central and Eastern Europe, and give faith to the future. STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS Our Gospel Reading today is quite short. However, it contains an important revelation from St. John the Baptist about Jesus, our Lord and Savior. John the Baptist testifies, I saw the Spirit come down like a dove from heaven and remain upon him. We are fond in the Church to use the symbol of the dove to represent the Holy Spirit, but what John says is not that the Spirit was a dove, but it descended like a dove. The Spirit descends upon us as well throughout our lives as Catholics. At our Baptism the Holy Spirit came upon us, and we received the fullness of the Holy Spirit s gifts at Confirmation. Nevertheless, we receive the Holy Spirit at every Mass and especially at the Eucharist. Just as John the Baptist spoke of seeing the Holy Spirit descend upon the Lord, that same Holy Spirit descends upon us. You probably have never paid much attention to how a dove actually descends. It sort of hovers and floats downward. Its descent is smooth, deliberate, and in its own unique way. This Spirit has descended upon us and continues to do so. It fills us. What do we do with it? It is part of our very being, but for it to be effective we must share it and use it. Our Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI once said, No one can give that which they do not personally possess, which means we cannot transmit the Holy Spirit if we ourselves are not close to the Spirit. FR. MIKE BOYLE The Mass A Conversation with God Each weekend we have the opportunity to listen to the word of God in Scripture and listen to a reflection on Scripture in a short homily. We invite you to prepare for your conversation with God this coming weekend by reading beforehand the Scriptures that will be used in the Mass and by listening to a homily reflective of those Scripture passages. You can find this on a web site designed by Fr. Boyle. It is available on an iphone, ipad or PC. Use your browser to access: BLANKETS FOR THE HOMELESS Donate fleece blankets to help keep the homeless warm this winter. Blankets should be the size that will fit into a back pack. Collection bins are located outside the doors of church, or drop off at the parish office.

4 4 SCHEDULE OF EVENTS Week of Prayer for Christian Unity Jan See Prayer below. 2ND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME "Now I have seen and testified that he is the Son of God." John the Baptist had an important message to impart. He was called by God to prepare the people of Israel to recognize Jesus' true identity. In a sense, he helped establish credibility for Christ by confirming that he was in fact the Messiah. Jesus didn't just have to claim it on his own; John also "testified" to the fact. We, of course, also benefit from the witness of John the Baptist recorded for us in the Gospels. And we have additional witnesses from the rest of the people throughout the Gospels who knew and recognized Jesus as the Son of God. But we also have the benefit of two thousand years of Church history! We have countless testimonies of saints and believers throughout the centuries who have known Jesus in their own lives and acted accordingly. This raises two questions. First, are we willing to believe these testimonies from those who have gone before us? Consider how much credence we give to the experiences and the stories of our forefathers and foremothers in the faith--whether they are blood relatives or members of the larger communion of saints. Sometimes these personal accounts of coming to know the Lord are much more powerful than any "proof" or intellectual proposal about Christianity. They do require a degree of faith and trust, but they nonetheless provide us with real evidence about the impact of being close to Christ. Secondly, let us consider whether or not we are willing to give testimony to who Christ is to us? It's one thing to believe in Jesus; it's another thing to share that faith with others. But like John the Baptist, we are called to share the truth so that others may come to believe. GIFT CART Check out the new items at the gift, open Sunday mornings after all Masses in Piper Hall! WEEK OF PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY Week of Prayer for Christian Unity (Jan ) Unity. What does "unity" mean? For those of us who claim Christ as our model of living and savior of humanity, it means we are one. This year the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity has as its theme the Scripture citation 2 Corinthians 5: The first line contains our mission statement... "For the love of Christ impels us, once we have come to the conviction that one died for all; therefore all have died." If that is not a mandate for unity, then there is none. We are one in the death of Christ and therefore live in unity with all other Christians. God, who are unity in three holy persons--father, Son, and Holy Spirit-- you have called us to live in peace with all people. You have also called us to work toward unity in purpose to spread the Gospel to all nations. Graciously give us the courage and strength to work toward unity, and act toward each other as brothers and sisters. We ask this in the unity of God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.

The restoration of unity among all Christians is one of the principal concerns of the Second Vatican Council. Division damages the holy cause of preaching the Gospel to every creature. Thus we are asked to pray faithfully that unity will be achieved by those separated. During the week of Prayer for Christian Unity the Diocese of Phoenix and the ELAC Lutheran synod are sponsoring a significant event on Monday January 23 rd at St. Mary s Basilica from 1:30-4:00 in downtown Phoenix. The event will start with prayer and then we will have the opportunity to hear 2 world renowned speakers, Fr. John Crossin and the Rev. Lowell Almen. We bring our Catholic identity and values to the miracle of creating new families through infant adoption. We have many families on our waiting list BECAUSE they want to adopt through Catholic Charities, but we simply do not have enough infants for our families waiting to adopt. This seems hard to believe when we know that there are so many women experiencing unplanned pregnancies. Our pregnancy counseling program provides free, life-affirming support to those experiencing an unplanned pregnancy. We go to the clients, wherever they might be, and help them explore the life-affirming choices of parenting or placement with a loving adoptive family. If parenting, we help them to develop the skills and resources they need to parent successfully. If placing for adoption, we help them decide whether they would like an open or closed adoption and they choose the family. Our support is life-long for birth and adoptive parents as well as baby. No one should experience an unplanned pregnancy without compassionate, life-affirming support. For information contact pregnancysupport@cc-az.org. Our counselors are available 7 days a week, toll-free on our pregnancy hotline WE ARE HERE FOR YOU ALL LIFE IS A BLESSING! Maggie's Place provides houses of hospitality and ongoing support to help pregnant and parenting women in need reach their goals, and welcomes them into a community filled with love and dignity. Are you interested in learning more about how to support our mission?
