3 S T E WA R D S H I P N E W S 3 "What can I do to be a good steward and disciple of Jesus?" HAPPY MOTHER S DAY For those whose mothers and grandmothers are still alive - cherish them today. Hug and kiss them. Honor them. Thank them. For those whose mothers have gone home to the Lord, remember them. For all who bear the name Christian, the name of our eternal family, let us also honor the Mother of the Lord today. Her maternal care for Jesus still embraces all those who are joined to Him, as members of His Body, by that great new birth of Baptism. Finally, let us ask the Lord to open our eyes, and our hearts, to come to more fully understand the great mystery and gift of the Church as our Mother. Let us live our lives as Christians, by living in the heart of Mother Church, for the sake of the world into which we are sent to bear the Good News. TRINITY DOME NATIONAL SHRINE This week, our parish is participating in a national collection for the Trinity Dome to complete the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC, before its 100th anniversary. Also known as America s Catholic Church, the National Shrine has been a century in the making, built by and for the faithful of our great nation in honor of our Blessed Mother, the patroness of the United States. For more information, please visit The Trinity Dome is the central and largest dome of the National Shrine. This Crowning Jewel will be adorned in mosaic according to the original iconographic scheme of the Great Upper Church and will depict the Most Holy Trinity, the Blessed Virgin Mary as the Immaculate Conception, and a procession of saints who have an association with the United States and the National Shrine. The procession of saints includes, among others, St. Juan Diego (the first canonized male Native American), St. Kateri Tekakwitha (the first canonized female Native American), St. Teresa of Calcutta (an honorary American citizen), St. Francis Cabrini, M.S.C. (the first U.S. citizen to be canonized), St. John Paul II (the first pope to visit the National Shrine), and St. Junípero Serra (declared a saint by Pope Francis at the National Shrine in 2015 for the first canonization ever to take place on American soil). The Nicene Creed will encircle the base of the dome, while the dome s four pendentives will feature the four Evangelists: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. During his visit to the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception on September 23, 2015, Pope Francis blessed the preliminary segment of mosaic created for the Trinity Dome containing the words of the beginning and end of the Nicene Creed: I believe in one God. Amen. STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS The word church finds its roots in the Greek word ecclesia. However, a correct translation of that word is actually an assembly of people, called out of their homes into a public meeting place. Thus, the Church is really the people who make it up; the use of the term in relation to a building has developed through time, but we must never forget that it is we who are indeed the Church. That is a basic part of something St. Peter writes in our Second Reading. Peter says, like living stones, let yourselves be built into a spiritual house, in reference to the members. He is saying in effect that we are called to build a church with living stones, namely ourselves. We all also understand that for a structure to be most effective, every element is needed to keep it strong. We, as the Church and as our parish, are no different. We need each person, each part of what is really the Church, to be like a living stone, active and involved. We are a faith community, not just a community of worshipers, but a community to reach out and serve others. To really do that we need each member to offer something of himself or herself. In a message to a celebration about the Church being the people, Pope Francis said, It is isolation that harms, not sharing. Being among people does not mean merely being open toward others, but also letting others get close to us. To be open, to be Church, requires each of us to do a part. CHARITY AND DEVELOPMENT APPEAL As One Family in Christ, we can support the work of over 70 agencies and ministries across the Diocese. Together we can provide seminarian education, a safe home for mothers and newborns and a televised Sunday Mass to ill and homebound Catholics. These organizations shine the light of hope into the lives of thousands of people. Help us provide the opportunity to meet the needs of those within our parishes and beyond to encounter the Living Christ. Gifts can be made online at diocesephoenix.org/cda or by completing a CDA pledge card located in the back of the church. Thank you for your support! Through May 2: Pledged: $64,714 Parish goal: $100,000
4 4 SCHEDULE OF EVENTS Gospel Reflections With Kevin Saunders. Final session for the season on Wednesday, May 31. Come back for a four-week summer session on August 2, 9, 16, 23! 5TH SUNDAY OF EASTER "Whoever believes in me will do the works that I do." What were the works that Jesus did? Miracles, sometimes, but what were the essence of these miracles? Caring for the sick, comforting the sorrowful, feeding the hungry... much of Jesus' ministry was spent in carrying out what we call the works of mercy. But he did more than that; he also preached and publicly shared the good news, he fostered fellowship and community, and he prayed. All of this makes a kind of plan of action for us as Christians. As Jesus says today, if we truly believe in him, we will follow in his footsteps and do these same things. What this all suggests is that belief itself--having faith, being Christian--is only part of the picture. Jesus expects us to take this faith and put it into concrete, practical action. Apparently this goes hand in hand with real faith. If actions don't follow, then faith is not being lived to its fullest. This of course presents a real challenge. Our lives are busy and our plates are full, just with the tasks and demands of daily existence. It can seem like a burden to serve others, to share the Gospel, to be actively involved in a faith community, to find time to pray. But these are meant to be priorities for true disciples of Christ. And as many will testify, when we sincerely ask God to help us get our priorities in order, he has a way of miraculously multiplying our time. Somehow, we find the opportunities right before us to follow God's will and bring our faith to life. That simple prayer of asking for help may be where we need to start. The first step is not so much to fill our calendar as to fill our hearts, or just to pray that God will fill our hearts, with the desire to "do the works" of Jesus. (480) x50 ECUMENICAL AND INTER FAITH UPDATE The Church promotes unity among all the followers of Christ which flows from our common baptism and seeks the fullness of unity which is a condition of evangelization. The restoration of unity among all Christians is one of the principal concerns of the Second Vatican Council. Division damages the holy cause of preaching the Gospel to every creature. Thus we are asked to pray faithfully that unity will be achieved by those separated. The Church of Phoenix is called to participate in the quest for unity by promoting ecumenical and inter-religious relations as mandated by Vatican II. The Church has urged the faithful to seek unity with her separated Christian brothers and sisters and respect the truth found in all religions. It is essential that each parish as part of its mission seek ways to further unity with all Christians and non-christians. As part of this call we at St. Maria Goretti Parish join the Diocese of Phoenix in this quest. Those interested in furthering this ministry please contact Tom Brady SOCIETY OF ST VINCENT DE PAUL INFORMATION FEED. CLOTHE. HOUSE. We bring our Catholic identity and values to the miracle of creating new families through infant adoption. We have many families on our waiting list BECAUSE they want to adopt through Catholic Charities, but we simply do not have enough infants for our families waiting to adopt. This seems hard to believe when we know that there are so many women experiencing unplanned pregnancies. Our pregnancy counseling program provides free, life-affirming support to those experiencing an unplanned pregnancy. We go to the clients, wherever they might be, and help them explore the life-affirming choices of parenting or placement with a loving adoptive family. If parenting, we help them to develop the skills and resources they need to parent successfully. If placing for adoption, we help them decide whether they would like an open or closed adoption and they choose the family. Our support is life-long for birth and adoptive parents as well as baby. No one should experience an unplanned pregnancy without compassionate, life-affirming support. For information contact pregnancysupport@cc-az.org. Our counselors are available 7 days a week, toll-free on our pregnancy hotline WE ARE HERE FOR YOU ALL LIFE IS A BLESSING! Maggie's Place provides houses of hospitality and ongoing support to help pregnant and parenting women in need reach their goals, and welcomes them into a community filled with love and dignity. Are you interested in learning more about how to support our mission? We are currently seeking female applicants 21+ years who are interested in serving for one year as live-in volunteers with our mothers and their babies. For more information please contact Amanda Ayala at missioncorps@maggiesplace.org or visit maggiesplace.org. LET US PRAY... All the faithful are invited to join us as we pray for the unborn the little ones that cannot speak for themselves.
