SMG 50TH ANNIVERSARY Parish Picture Directory - We are partnering with Lifetouch to create a parish family picture directory. Photography sessions will be held in Piper Hall on several dates in November with easy online scheduling. Visit or follow the link from our parish website. We will also have appointment sign-up opportunities after Mass. Our goal is to have EVERY family participate and be in the directory, which we will place in the church time capsule. Every family participating will receive a free 8x10 photo and a picture directory. **There is no obligation to purchase photos. PREPARE FOR SUNDAY MASS The Mass A Conversation with God Each weekend we have the opportunity to listen to the word of God in Scripture and listen to a reflection on Scripture in a short homily. We invite you to prepare for your conversation with God this coming weekend by reading beforehand the Scriptures that will be used in the Mass and by listening to a homily reflective of those Scripture passages. You can find this on a web site designed by Fr. Boyle. It is available on an iphone, ipad or PC. Use your browser to access: STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS The last line of today s Gospel Reading from St. Matthew contains one of the more well known of Jesus quotes. When asked a bit of a trick question by the Pharisees, Is it lawful to pay the census tax to Caesar or not? Jesus responds by asking them whose image is on their Roman coins, to which they respond simply Caesar s. Jesus response to their reply is known to most of us, Then repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God. The Lord s answer is far more perceptive than we might think, and it gives another message to us, one we must always remember. If we are followers of Christ, and if we work to be His disciple, the Lord might ask us, Whose image is on your soul? We have learned in the First Chapter of Genesis that God created us in His image. The coin may be stamped with Caesar s image, but each of us is stamped with God s image. Thus, Jesus is implying that the coin may be Caesar s but each of us belongs to God. In that regard we should be striving to be all those things to which Jesus called us. That is in effect what a stewardship way of life is recognizing that God is in each of us, we are to place ourselves in service to God and to one another. That is what is really meant by Then repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God. WORLD MISSION SUNDAY Today we celebrate World Mission Sunday. Its theme this year is Mercy Changes the World. Pope Francis invites the entire Church to support the young mission dioceses in Africa, Asia, the Pacific Islands, and parts of Latin America and Europe, where priests, religious and lay leaders serve some of the poorest of the poor. Please keep the Missions in your prayers and be generous in next week s collection for the Society of the Propagation of the Faith. *Please place your WMS envelope in the regular collection basket.

All Saints Day (Holy day of Obligation) Wednesday, November 1, Holy Mass at 8:00 a.m. & 6:00 p.m. 29TH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME "Then repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God." Jesus had a brilliant way of navigating tricky situations. In today's Gospel, the Pharisees "plotted how they might entrap Jesus in speech." But he outwitted them, as usual. They wanted to catch him being a political rebel; they expected him to suggest that paying taxes to Caesar was unnecessary or even unjust. But instead, he shifted the focus. He emphasized the importance of fulfilling our civic responsibilities but also the necessity of giving to God what we owe him. So, how do we know what we should "repay" to God? Well, Jesus' response to the Pharisees gives us our answer. He looked at the Roman coin that bore the image of Caesar on it. Then he concluded that the coin belonged to Caesar because it was made in his likeness. Now, what bears the image of God? What is made in his likeness? We are! "God created man in his image; in the divine image he created him; male and female he created them" (Gn 1:27). If the coin belonged to Caesar, we belong to God. We repay God by giving him ourselves! This self-giving is what the Second Vatican Council called "the obedience of faith." Through this spiritual obedience, we freely commit ourselves to God, "offering the full submission of intellect and will to God" (Dei Verbum #5). Jesus is calling us today to use our will to choose to follow God. Indeed, the one thing we can give God in return for the gift of life is our will. He gave us the freedom to love him or not. And while the choice is always ours, today Jesus encourages us to make the right decision by giving God what is really his: ourselves! Mass will be celebrated at 8:00 AM and 6:30 PM, each followed by a teaching Mass, which is a walkthrough of the Mass with a running commentary and questions. It is interesting to review the parts of the Mass and to take note of why we do what we do. Fr. Thomas will preside at both sessions. The morning session should conclude by 9:30 AM while the evening session should conclude by 8:30 PM. Watch for future sessions the first Friday of the month. COMMEMORATION OF THE FAITHFUL DEPARTED (ALL SOULS) During the month of November, the church remembers all those who have died. This year, we invite the community to bring photos of their departed loved ones on the weekend of October 29 to be displayed in church (on the platform area to the right of the altar) throughout the month of November. On the weekend of November 5, we will remember in a special way all of our parishioners who have died in the past year and read their names at Mass. (480) x50 ECUMENICAL AND INTER FAITH UPDATE The Church promotes unity among all the followers of Christ which flows from our common baptism and seeks the fullness of unity which is a condition of evangelization. The restoration of unity among all Christians is one of the principal concerns of the Second Vatican Council. Division damages the holy cause of preaching the Gospel to every creature. Thus we are asked to pray faithfully that unity will be achieved by those separated. The Church of Phoenix is called to participate in the quest for unity by promoting ecumenical and inter-religious relations as mandated by Vatican II. The Church has urged the faithful to seek unity with her separated Christian brothers and sisters and respect the truth found in all religions. It is essential that each parish as part of its mission seek ways to further unity with all Christians and non-christians. We bring our Catholic identity and values to the miracle of creating new families through infant adoption. We have many families on our waiting list BECAUSE they want to adopt through Catholic Charities, but we simply do not have enough infants for our families waiting to adopt. This seems hard to believe when we know that there are so many women experiencing unplanned pregnancies. Our pregnancy counseling program provides free, life-affirming support to those experiencing an unplanned pregnancy. We go to the clients, wherever they might be, and help them explore the life-affirming choices of parenting or placement with a loving adoptive family.
