3 S T E WA R D S H I P N E W S 3 "What can I do to be a good steward and disciple of Jesus?" PALM SUNDAY Jesus, the humble carpenter, frequently attracted large crowds with his preaching. A moment of apparent triumph and glory came when these same people in Jerusalem acclaimed him as king, probably hoping he would be a new military leader and overthrow the occupying Romans. His triumph was brief, for the next day the same crowds turned on him. He spoke truthfully and did not cower in Pilate s presence, yet Pilate had Jesus put to death. Ever since that first Good Friday, those who pass through the darkest nights know they don t go alone. For each of us Jesus obediently and willingly entered into the pain and sorrow of humanity. He counted the milestones along the way of despair, and fell into the abyss of death. There are no dead-end streets anymore. For us, at the end of every road, there shines the light of Christ. EASTER FAMILY PROJECT Easter Cookies - A memorable way to teach children the Resurrection Place 1 cup of pecans in a zippered plastic bag and let the children break them into pieces with a wooden spoon (Jesus was beaten by the Roman soldiers). Have the children sniff the vinegar and pour 1 teaspoon in a mixing bowl (Jesus was thirsty on the cross and given vinegar to drink). Add 3 egg whites, representing life, to the vinegar (Jesus gave his life so that we may have life). Sprinkle salt into each child s hand to taste and put a pinch into the bowl (these are the salty tears of Jesus disciples and our sadness for our sins). Add 1 cup of sugar (how sweet it is to know that Jesus loves us to much he would even die for us). Beat with a mixer on high speed into stiff peaks (the white color is our purity when God forgives our sins). Fold in the nuts. Drop by teaspoon onto a cookie sheet covered with waxed paper (each mount represents the rocky tomb where Jesus was laid). Put the cookies in a preheated 300 degree oven and turn the oven OFF. Give each child a piece of tape and seal the oven door, just as Jesus tomb was sealed. Go to bed! On Easter morning, open the oven and take a bite. Notice the cracked surface. The cookies are hollow! The tomb is empty! Jesus is alive! STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS Most of us know today as Palm Sunday, although officially in the Church it is called Palm Sunday of the Lord s Passion, and to many Church leaders it is simply Passion Sunday, which comes from the Latin name for it, Dominica Passionis. We have reflected on this day previously how the liturgy begins with great joy and becomes more and more somber with the reading of the Passion. During the procession of the palms Jesus arrives in Jerusalem to great tumult and rejoicing as the people cry out Hosanna blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, hosanna in the highest. As the Mass progresses we get an overview of what is to occur during this holiest of weeks, including the institution of the Eucharist, the passion and death of the Lord, the prediction of His Resurrection, and then His Resurrection itself. Imagine the confusion of the Twelve Apostles. Jesus has been spending time with them in the recent weeks prior to the Passion trying to get them to understand that His time of suffering was near and approaching, and that is the reason He must go to Jerusalem. And here is the crowd welcoming and praising and laughing and celebrating His presence. We are not much different in many ways, but now is the time for us to really embrace and understand the sacrifice the Lord made for each of us, and the incredible gift He has given us. In the coming days it is our final chance to truly rededicate ourselves to being His disciple. CHARITY & DEVELOPMENT APPEAL We are all the Church and can support the work of over 70 agencies and ministries across the Diocese. Together we can provide education for seminarians, a safe home for mothers and newborns and a televised Sunday Mass to ill and homebound Catholics. These organizations shine the light of hope into the lives of thousands of people. Help us provide the opportunity to meet the needs of those within our parishes and beyond to encounter the Living Christ. Make your gift today. Gifts can be made online at diocesephoenix.org/cda or by completing a CDA pledge card available in the back of the church. Thank you for your support! Parish Goal: $100,000 Pledges (3/28/17): $60,139

4 4 SCHEDULE OF EVENTS Gospel Reflections With Kevin Saunders. Wednesdays at 8:30 a.m. in Piper Hall. Holy Week & Easter Liturgies See the full schedule of Masses for Holy Week and Easter on page 10. PALM SUNDAY "Then Peter remembered the word that Jesus had spoken: 'Before the cock crows you will deny me three times.' He went out and began to weep bitterly." Today's Gospel traces two tales of betrayal and remorse. At the Last Supper, Peter pledges his fidelity to Christ. He sincerely cannot imagine himself denying Jesus. Judas, on the other hand, is a liar who professes loyalty while knowing that he has already betrayed the Lord. Both men come to regret their actions. But their responses are different. Peter recognizes his failure, feels the bitterness of his actions, and weeps over them. Judas, however, does not weep. He tries to undo his action, and when he can't, he gives up hope. Although Peter felt the weight of his sins, he did not give up. He got up after he fell and moved forward, remaining a loyal disciple, if an imperfect one. He learned from his mistake and, through his eventual martyrdom, fulfilled his promise to die for Christ. Judas of course could have reconciled with the Lord as well. Even at the moment of betrayal, Jesus extended his mercy by calling Judas, "Friend." And he does the same for us. Even when we declare, "Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord" one day and, "I do not know the man!" the next, Jesus still forgives us. Although we may waver when the Gospel challenges us to change, when our Christian witness means social stigma, or when our faith is tested by trial or temptation, nonetheless Jesus' offer of friendship never expires. During this Holy Week, let us pray for the grace to be good friends in return. May we be willing to accompany Christ on his path to Calvary, and remain steadfast with him all the way to the foot of the cross. GOSPEL REFLECTIONS WITH KEVIN SAUNDERS Join us Wednesday mornings at 8:30 a.m. (after the Daily Mass) in Piper Hall for Gospel Reflections with biblical scholar, Kevin Saunders. (480) x50 ECUMENICAL AND INTER FAITH UPDATE The Church promotes unity among all the followers of Christ which flows from our common baptism and seeks the fullness of unity which is a condition of evangelization. The restoration of unity among all Christians is one of the principal concerns of the Second Vatican Council. Division damages the holy cause of preaching the Gospel to every creature. Thus we are asked to pray faithfully that unity will be achieved by those separated. The Church of Phoenix is called to participate in the quest for unity by promoting ecumenical and inter-religious relations as mandated by Vatican II. The Church has urged the faithful to seek unity with her separated Christian brothers and sisters and respect the truth found in all religions. It is essential that each parish as part of its mission seek ways to further unity with all Christians and non-christians. As part of this call we at St. Maria Goretti Parish join the Diocese of Phoenix in this quest. Those interested in furthering this ministry please contact Tom Brady SOCIETY OF ST VINCENT DE PAUL INFORMATION FEED. CLOTHE. HOUSE. We bring our Catholic identity and values to the miracle of creating new families through infant adoption. We have many families on our waiting list BECAUSE they want to adopt through Catholic Charities, but we simply do not have enough infants for our families waiting to adopt. This seems hard to believe when we know that there are so many women experiencing unplanned pregnancies. Our pregnancy counseling program provides free, life-affirming support to those experiencing an unplanned pregnancy. We go to the clients, wherever they might be, and help them explore the life-affirming choices of parenting or placement with a loving adoptive family. If parenting, we help them to develop the skills and resources they need to parent successfully. If placing for adoption, we help them decide whether they would like an open or closed adoption and they choose the family. Our support is life-long for birth and adoptive parents as well as baby. No one should experience an unplanned pregnancy without compassionate, life-affirming support. For information contact pregnancysupport@cc-az.org. Our counselors are available 7 days a week, toll-free on our pregnancy hotline WE ARE HERE FOR YOU ALL LIFE IS A BLESSING! Maggie's Place provides houses of hospitality and ongoing support to help pregnant and parenting women in need reach their goals, and welcomes them into a community filled with love and dignity. Are you interested in learning more about how to support our mission? We are currently seeking female applicants 21+ years who are interested in serving for one year as live-in volunteers with our mothers and their babies.
