3 S T E WA R D S H I P N E W S 3 "What can I do to be a good steward and disciple of Jesus?" TIME FLIES Have you ever lost track of time? Do you know that moment in which you look back at the end of a day or a period of time and wonder how time flew by so quickly? That is a sign of a talent when we use our talents, time passes by more quickly, the steps come naturally to us, and we wonder how did I learn to do that? The talent research that underpins StrengthsFinder describes a talent as a naturally recurring pattern of thinking, feeling or behaving that can be productively applied. Growing as a good steward of talent begins with awareness. Yet, in facilitating days in which people explore their talents together, I know that many of us have been taught to downplay the things we do well. We do this out of a false sense of humility, which really is not about humility at all. The humble person recognizes that all of life is a gift from God, to be used wisely, given back with increase, to the greater glory of God. Humility focuses our attention on the Creator and puts all of life in proper perspective. This is exactly what happens when we become attentive to our talents and learn to build on them, developing strengths and using them in life, ministry, and service. We recognize the gift and the Giver of all good gifts, and in doing so, we hold all things in proper and holy perspective. The next time you lose track of time, pause for a moment and recognize the talents you were experiencing in the process. Say a prayer of gratitude for the gift of that talent, and ask God for the grace and wisdom to be a good steward of the talent in the future. This is the path of the humble, talented steward! PREPARE FOR THE SUNDAY READINGS The Mass A Conversation with God Each weekend we have the opportunity to listen to the word of God in Scripture and listen to a reflection on Scripture in a short homily. We invite you to prepare for your conversation with God this coming weekend by reading beforehand the Scriptures that will be used in the Mass and by listening to a homily reflective of those Scripture passages. You can find this on a web site designed by Fr. Boyle. It is available on an iphone, ipad or PC. Use your browser to access: STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS Today s Gospel from the Book of Matthew describes what occurred in Tyre and Sidon when Jesus cured the daughter of a Gentile woman. Tyre and Sidon were Gentile cities. The Apostles faithfully followed the Lord wherever He went, just as we are called to do. There was only one reason that the Lord made this trip (on foot, of course, as that was the only alternative at that time), and that was to cure the daughter of the Gentile woman. Making an effort like that is a sign of Christ s love, and His understanding of a need. He was also trying to teach His followers, which includes us, how important each individual and her or his faith is. Jesus Apostles found this situation, and perhaps even this entire trip, to be a fruitless and empty gesture, more of a bother than it was worth. They even plead with Jesus to ignore the woman and send her away. They said, Send her away, for she keeps calling out after us. However, Jesus is teaching a lesson to each of us, actually two lessons. He does not send her away but finally responds, saying O woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish. The two lessons (messages) Jesus provides to us are easily summarized. First, we need to know and understand that Jesus loves us and He is aware of our needs. The second is that when we pray and appeal for help (all the woman finally said was Lord, help me! ) a key to answered prayers is persistence. She had it, and we need to have it. REST IN PEACE... John XXIII Air Conditioner How grateful we are that this 10-ton York unit faithfully served the SMG community for over 30 years, keeping all within John XXIII cool during so many scorching Arizona summers. The long life span of York is testimony to the quality of workmanship of days gone by. In the last few years, age began to wear on York and numerous treatments administered to help prolong its service. Alas, recent attempts to resuscitate were unsuccessful. York leaves a legacy that will be difficult and costly to replace. Donations to help defray the estimated $19,000 expense are greatly appreciated. 4 4 SCHEDULE OF EVENTS Gospel Reflections With Kevin Saunders. Join us for a summer session on August 2, 9, 16, 23! 20TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME "O woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish." This woman was an outsider. She was a Canaanite, not an Israelite, and as such she would have been considered ritually unclean. But she approached Jesus nonetheless and asked for his help. And Jesus used this opportunity to teach his disciples an important lesson. In the verses directly before today's passage, Jesus had told Peter that what defiles a person comes from the heart, not from ignoring external purity practices. Then, Jesus traveled with his disciples from Galilee to the region of Tyre and Sidon where they were much more likely to encounter someone considered to be unclean. At first it appeared that Jesus wasn't going to acknowledge the woman who begged for help. His comment, "It is not right to take the food of the children and throw it to the dogs," was a common comparison between Jews (the children) and Canaanites (the dogs). But, in fact, Jesus said this only to go right ahead and break this social code! He showed by his actions that it did not matter whether someone was Jewish or not, what mattered was the faith in a person's heart. And this woman proved to Jesus and the doubting disciples that she had great faith. How many others would have even approached Jesus to ask for his help? How many others would have persevered when he appeared unresponsive? By pausing in his response, and first mentioning the standard reply, Jesus gave this woman the opportunity to demonstrate her great faith. And then, he answered her request and praised her extraordinary faith. What a lesson for his prejudiced disciples! And what a lesson for us, both to persevere in faith, and never to judge others on mere appearances. GOSPEL REFLECTIONS: SUMMER SESSION! (480) x50 ECUMENICAL AND INTER FAITH UPDATE The Church promotes unity among all the followers of Christ which flows from our common baptism and seeks the fullness of unity which is a condition of evangelization. The restoration of unity among all Christians is one of the principal concerns of the Second Vatican Council. Division damages the holy cause of preaching the Gospel to every creature. Thus we are asked to pray faithfully that unity will be achieved by those separated. The Church of Phoenix is called to participate in the quest for unity by promoting ecumenical and inter-religious relations as mandated by Vatican II. The Church has urged the faithful to seek unity with her separated Christian brothers and sisters and respect the truth found in all religions. It is essential that each parish as part of its mission seek ways to further unity with all Christians and non-christians. As part of this call we at St. Maria Goretti Parish join the Diocese of Phoenix in this quest. We bring our Catholic identity and values to the miracle of creating new families through infant adoption. We have many families on our waiting list BECAUSE they want to adopt through Catholic Charities, but we simply do not have enough infants for our families waiting to adopt. This seems hard to believe when we know that there are so many women experiencing unplanned pregnancies. Our pregnancy counseling program provides free, life-affirming support to those experiencing an unplanned pregnancy. We go to the clients, wherever they might be, and help them explore the life-affirming choices of parenting or placement with a loving adoptive family. If parenting, we help them to develop the skills and resources they need to parent successfully. If placing for adoption, we help them decide whether they would like an open or closed adoption and they choose the family. Our support is life-long for birth and adoptive parents as well as baby.
