3 S T E WA R D S H I P N E W S 3 "What can I do to be a good steward and disciple of Jesus?" ST. JOSEPH THE WORKER MINISTRY ARE YOU LOOKING FOR A WAY TO HELP THE PARISH? WOULD YOU LIKE TO OFFER YOUR TIME AND TALENT TO HELP KEEP OUR CAMPUS BEAUTIFUL? IF SO, THIS IS THE MINISTRY FOR YOU! Many of our parishioners have great skills in carpentry, plumbing, electrical work, painting, etc. Are you one of them? We are looking for parishioners with skills and time to assist with various maintenance projects. The poor economy is making it harder for people to donate funds, and rising costs are also making it harder for the parish to accomplish needed maintenance. This is your chance to put your skills and time to work to keep our campus a pleasant, beautiful and safe place to come. Visit the Stewardship table at the Ministry Fair for details and to sign up! OCTOBER 31, 2010 And how could a thing remain, unless you willed it; or be preserved, had it not been called forth by you? - Wisdom 11:25 These words from the Book of Wisdom, remind us that every single gift, skill, talent or blessing that we have has been called forth for us from God. The incredible abundance that surrounds us is all given to us by our heavenly Father for a reason. These gifts are not given for us to hoard but rather for us to share. STEWARDSHIP IN ACTION Soldiers Angels Thank you for your continued support of Soldiers Angels, our yearlong stewardship project. The holidays are the perfect time to remember those serving in our military who may not be home for Christmas. If you are unable to prepare a care package, help defray the shipping cost by making a donation to the project at the Stewardship Council booth at the parish Ministry Fair next weekend! STEWARDSHIP ~ ONE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE Stewardship as Service Ida Trentacoste has an incredibly close relationship with Santa Claus. She likes his anonymity and seeks to imitate it whenever possible. Just as you won't see Santa Claus this Christmas Eve sliding down the chimney bringing presents to your little ones, you won't see Ida in this article. But she is truly present: behind the boxes stacked in front of the picture of St. Maria Goretti and behind the 100+ people of all ages that are filling the 2500 to 4500 stockings that Santa's Workshop delivers to 18+ organizations. The average stocking contains candy, a pair of socks, toothbrush, toothpaste, a stuffed animal and several age appropriate gift items. Santa s Workshop began about 30 years ago. It was the brainchild of the then Youth Director. It started when the teens and their families donated used toys. The teens cleaned and repaired the toys and they were then given to the less fortunate. Times and directors changed and the project evolved into what it still is today. The parishioners of St. Maria have generously supported the project, monetarily and by donating filled stockings. The number of requests grew as the parish grew. In the past few years the parish rolls have decreased but with the continued financial support of our parishioners and local business organizations the ministry has been able continue to fill all the orders. Parishioners from St. Maria s, the Church of the Ascension in Fountain Hills and the Remax Office at Mountain View and McDonald donate filled stockings. The filled stockings provide about 20% of what we need to fill the orders. Ida shops all year long for the remaining items: Socks and crayons are bought when the Back to School items go on sale. Candy is bought after Halloween and stored for the five weeks until the stockings are stuffed and distributed. End of summer sales provide balls, bubbles, jump ropes etc. Staples are bought in bulk: razor blades, tissues, cards, soap etc. Discount and Dollar stores are the source of many quality items. Every dollar is stretched. Ida can't talk about Santa's Workshop without mentioning her one very dedicated elf, a retired engineer, who makes the stockings. The Workshop provides the material and he provides the time, talent and thread. He and his wife have made almost 70,000 stockings over the years. Ida has been at St. Maria Goretti parish for over 25 years and loves the people in the parish, many of whom she met stuffing stockings. She says that Santa's workshop is a ministry for the busy because there is no commitment except for 1 day a year when stockings are stuffed and even then you get to meet the very best people and you get fed! She especially likes the fact that parishioners of all ages are there to stuff stockings. One of the older elves mentioned to her one year, that a couple of elves who were 16 & 17 were under stuffing their "age appropriate stockings". Fearing disappointed recipients she queried the young men if maybe they thought the recipients would feel cheated. "Oh no!" they said. "They will really like every single thing in these stockings!" If you don't already know Ida, you should meet her. You can find her in the Parish Hall on December 4th stuffing stockings. As Ida says: "Look at your shadow. If the front of your shoes look like they curl up don t be surprised. You are all official elves for the Workshop and have been for years."

4 4 SCHEDULE OF EVENTS Gospel Reflections with Kevin Saunders Wednesdays at 8:30am in Piper Hall. Parish Ministry Fair & Parish Picnic Sunday, November 7 THIRTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is nearly the largest private foundation in the world. With an asset trust endowment of over $34 billion, its reach through grants is truly worldwide. The Gates Foundation is able to provide funding at a level that exceeds the ability of many governments. Education and health initiatives have been the biggest beneficiaries of the foundation's grants. It is estimated that literally millions have benefited, especially children who have been immunized against childhood diseases and families that have been sustained by increased agricultural yields. Despite such stellar performance, there are those who have criticized the foundation or who have rebuked the source of its funding (Gates' profits from Microsoft) as monopolistic. Not everything is perfect in this world, as this week's Gospel reveals. Zacchaeus is a tax collector, a position in the ancient world reviled for its cooperation with an occupying army. Local tax collectors were often less than savory characters who would occasionally cheat to get ahead, or overcharge to make a little extra on the side. It could be a lucrative position-especially in Jericho, a sizable town-and from the Gospel, it seems that Zacchaeus was making the most of it. The opinion of the Pharisees that Zacchaeus was a sinner was probably the view that most citizens of the town had of him. After an encounter with Jesus, Zacchaeus had a change of heart. He was intent on doing good with what he had. Like most philanthropies, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is looking to do good with its assets, propelled by the intent of its founders. We don't need to have $34 billion to help others. All we need is a conversion, a change of heart, to be ready to do good. Whatever small thing we can do each day to help someone puts us in the company of folks like Zacchaeus, open to the saving power of God. It is essential that the Church continue its work towards unity. The mission of the Ecumenical and Inter-religious Outreach Ministry is to assist the Church, at the parish level, to reach out to other faith-based communities to promote and strengthen unity. We work to accomplish this through mutual dialog, prayer, and activities. Our guiding principle is John 17: I pray not only for them, but also for those who believe in me through their word, so that they may all be one, as you, Father, are in me and I in you, that they may also be in us, that the world may believe that you sent me. Would you like to help? Contact Tom Brady ( ). FOOD DRIVE St. Vincent de Paul Request: The homeless shelter is still in need of backpacks. Any usable packs would be greatly appreciated. We are blessed to be part of you and carry out our mission with your full support. Please know that when you bring food to Church on the First Sunday Food Drives you are caring for and feeding many grateful families. Thank you RESPECT ALL LIFE Dear Lord: We live in a world today that believes a person to be valuable only if they are useful to ourselves or others. Today, people who are inconvenient to some are believed to have no rights. We pray today that mothers considering abortion will instead let their children live and grow. We pray today that the elderly and infirm will be valued as members of our society. We pray for the poor, the condemned, the disabled, and the outcast. Help us, Lord, to build a culture of life because you, our Creator, are the author of us all. Amen Please join us in praying the Rosary after the 8:00 am Mass Monday-Saturday.
