(Exodus 15:6). According to Graymoor Ecumenical & Interreligious Institute (GEII)..., "Throughout the Biblical narrative of salvation, an unmistakable motif is the unrelenting determination of the Lord to form a people whom He could call His own. The formation of such a people, united in a sacred covenant with God, is integral to the Lord's plan of salvation and to the glorification of His name. The prophets repeatedly remind Israel that their covenant demanded that relationships among its various social groups should be characterized by justice, compassion and mercy. Reconciliation often demands repentance, reparation and healing of memories." The Arizona Faith Network hosts Prayer for Christian Unity as part of the World Council of Churches Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. 3 S T E WA R D S H I P N E W S 3 "What can I do to be a good steward and disciple of Jesus?" SMG 50TH ANNIVERSARY What should we include in the time capsule for future generations? Your ideas are welcome. Stop by the parish office and complete a suggestion form, or call the office at GOSPEL OF LIFE COLLECTION NEXT WEEKEND Every human person is created in the image and likeness of God. The conviction that human life is sacred and that each person has inherent dignity that must be respected in society lies a the heart of Catholic social teaching. Calls to advance human rights are illusions if the right to life itself is subject to attack. We believe that every human life is sacred from conception to natural death; that people are more important that things; and that the measure of every institution is whether or not it enhances the life and dignity of the human person (US Bishops: Faithful Citizenship - Civic Responsibility for a New Millennium, 1999). Your generosity in next weeks second collection helps continue this most important mission of the Church. STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men. With these words, Jesus invites Simon (Peter) and his brother Andrew to follow Him and be His disciples. We often speak of the subtleties of translation. In the original Greek in which St. Mark wrote his Gospel, a better translation would be, Come after me, and I will make you become fishers of men. It is the beginning of a process. We are called to that same process. It is not as if it happens quite suddenly. It happens over time, and it is a progression. If we are to be fishers of men, we are to be evangelizers and disciples of the Lord, and we are to represent what it means to be part of the Kingdom of God. Of course, Simon and Andrew abandoned their nets and followed him. It may be more difficult for us to abandon our nets so to speak, but it does prompt us that we need to make major changes in our lives if we are going to follow Jesus. Simon and Andrew, and then James and John, were common men, normal people. They had no theological credentials nor did they have any special status in the world. Most of us are similar. Jesus did not select them (or us) for who they were. He called them for what He could do through them. It is the same with each of us. Yes, we are called, but in order to really fulfill our calling we need to follow and trust in Jesus. STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE Plate Collection Totals for January 14, 2018 TOTALS NOT AVAILABLE AT TIME OF PRINTING Year to Date Sunday Plate Income (July - Nov) BUDGET... $279, ACTUAL (plate)... $305, For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. (480) x50 ECUMENICAL AND AND INTER INTER FAITH FAITH UPDATE WEEK OF UNITY Unity. What does "unity" mean? For those of us who claim Christ as our model of living and savior of humanity, it means we are one. This year the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity has as its theme the Scripture citation 2 Corinthians 5: The first line contains our mission statement... "For the love of Christ impels us, once we have come to the conviction that one died for all; therefore all have died." If that is not a mandate for unity, then there is none. We are one in the death of Christ and therefore live in unity with all other Christians. God, who are unity in three holy persons--father, Son, and Holy Spirit - you have called us to live in peace with all people. You have also called us to work toward unity in purpose to spread the Gospel to all nations. Graciously give us the courage and strength to work toward unity, and act toward each other as brothers and sisters. We ask this in the unity of God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.
