3 S T E WA R D S H I P N E W S 3 "What can I do to be a good steward and disciple of Jesus?" THE MANY FACES OF STEWARDSHIP AT SMG Meet Ted and Grace Kilbury. Ted and Grace lived 5 houses apart in Marion, Illinois. Grace lived right behind the nun s house and just knew they were keeping an eye on her all the time. When Ted got his driver s license he began taking the nun s shopping on Saturday mornings because that meant he got to drive. He became a favorite with the nun s and with Grace s mother. Grace still accuses him of being a brown noser. It was so bad, that her mother got angry whenever she dated anyone else. However after 59 years of marriage and three children she allows that her mother knew a good thing when she saw it (Ted agrees!). Ted got his degree from Ohio State in Aeronautical Engineering. The highlight of his career was working on the Lockheed SR-71 "Blackbird". Working on the engines of Mach 2+ planes occurred throughout his career. After retiring from Allied Signal in 2000 he worked as a Designated Rep for the FAA. If Ted approved - it the FAA approved it! Ted & Grace moved from Ohio to Scottsdale in May of They picked Scottsdale because at the time it was the only school district in the valley with a kindergarten. Their youngest child was to start kindergarten in the fall. They discovered St. Mary Goretti Parish meeting at Saguaro High School. Not shy about becoming involved Ted joined the Men s Club and became an usher while Grace joined the choir with Frank Vassett (with his harmonica) and Mary Flitton. In the early days Ted worked the Saturday night bingo right after the Saturday evening Mass. Grace has also been involved with the Women s Guild and has been a Eucharistic Minister for the last 10 years. Supporters of the missions, they made two trips to Guaymas. Taking the food from the soup kitchen out to the barrios; at the last stop it was their turn to eat. They sat down with some kids at a table and noticed that one child had simply covered his dish and then sat there and visited with the others at the table. They asked him why he wasn t eating and he responded It s not my turn to eat today. He was taking the food home to the others at home. Grace gave him her dish and thanking her, he simply added the contents to his dish and re-covered it. They describe themselves as part of the Hebrew branch of the Catholic Church: those who worship on Saturday. When asked why they still come to Maria Goretti when both St. Bernard s and St. Patrick s are closer they both responded: They are nice but they are too big! St. Maria s is so homey and friendly. STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS Today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Baptism of the Lord. This officially brings to an end the season of Christmas. You might say this is a second Epiphany. It is important to us as Catholics and Christians because it represents a second creation involving the entire Trinity. In fact in the Eastern Church this feast is called Theophany because God appears in three persons. Jesus the Son is baptized; the Holy Spirit descends upon Him; and God declares You are my beloved Son; with You I am well pleased. We recall our own Baptism on this day, because Christ s Baptism represents in many ways what occurred at our Baptism. At Christ s Baptism the Holy Spirit descended upon Him. At our Baptism the Trinity occupied our soul; Christ was declared the Beloved Son ; at our Baptism we became a child of God. At Jesus Baptism the heavens were opened, and at our Baptism heaven was opened to us. On this Holy Day we need to reflect upon our own Baptismal calls calls to live and love on this earth, a command to seek holiness, to actively be disciples of Christ, calls which can be achieved in part by embracing stewardship as a way of life. The Catechism of the Catholic Church (#1213) states: Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the door which gives access to the other sacraments. We are incorporated into the Church and made sharers in her mission. FR. MIKE BOYLE HOMILIES The Mass A Conversation with God Each weekend we have the opportunity to listen to the word of God in Scripture and l listen to a reflection on Scripture in a short homily. We invite you to prepare for your conversation with God this coming weekend by reading beforehand the Scriptures that will be used in the Mass and by listening to a homily reflective of those Scripture passages. You can find this on a web site designed by Fr. Boyle. It is available on an Iphone, Ipad or PC. Use your browser to access: CARMELITE SISTERS - PUEBLA, MEXICO Today we welcome back the Sisters from the Carmelite Missionary of Saint Therese of the Child Jesus from Puebla, Mexico. Each year the Sisters visit with an update on their mission to the poorest of poor in the mountain regions of Mexico and their efforts to reach the marginalized in far away places. This year s second collection on their behalf will assist with education and formation.

4 4 SCHEDULE OF EVENTS Ash Wednesday - Wednesday, February 10, Holy Mass and Imposition of Ashes at 8:00 a.m., 12 Noon, and 6:00 p.m. BAPTISM OF OUR LORD "After all the people had been baptized and Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, heaven was opened." What a treat to be in that crowd! Just imagine the experience of witnessing this manifestation of divinity! To SEE the Holy Spirit "in bodily form like a dove" and to hear the voice that "came from heaven" announcing Jesus' true identity. Don't we all long for this kind of miraculous clarity? Wouldn't it do wonders for our faith if we had such unmistakable certainty about who Jesus really is? It's easy to imagine that the first Christians had it easier than we do. They got to be with Jesus in person, and to witness the miracles that went along with his years on earth. Because of this, we can quickly forget the benefits we enjoy that they did not. We live on the other side of the Resurrection, for example. The first followers of Christ believed in him BEFORE he rose from the dead. We, on the other hand, have the confidence of knowing that this man literally conquered death. We also have two millennia of Christian witness through the saints to pull upon. The first Christians had no idea what this new religion would produce, how many people would embrace it, or how it would change the world for the better. We know that Christianity has been fruitful beyond measure. Today's Gospel informs us that it was only after they were baptized that the people witnessed the opening of heaven. Even Jesus himself was baptized before he heard this earthly confirmation of his heavenly origin. We who have been baptized, following the example of Christ, also have "access" to the voice of God. In the silence of our hearts, and through God's word in the Bible (another advantage we enjoy), heaven is "opened" for us as well. MONTHLY BLESSING FOR WEDDING ANNIVERSARIES Monthly Blessing of Married Couples - Feb. 6 & 7, all married couples celebrating wedding anniversaries will be blessed at all Masses on the first weekend of each month. MARRIAGE CONVALIDATION For those Catholics who were married outside of the Catholic Church and wish to receive the Sacrament of Matrimony, they can do so through a convalidation. The Church cares for her members as the Body of Christ. For this reason, Catholics are expected to marry in the Church and receive the grace that Christ freely offers in the Sacrament of Matrimony. Convalidation is the actual exchange of consent and vows. If you find yourselves in this situation and want to have the Church officially recognize your marriage then please contact Cindy, Coordinator of Marriage Preparation, ext. 21, to help walk you through the process.

It is therefore, the burden of the Church s preaching to proclaim the cross of Christ as a sign of God s all-embracing love. This is a quote from the Vatican document on the Relations of the Church to Non-Christian Religions known as Nostra Aetate. We celebrate this year the 50 th anniversary of the document which opened the door to a relationship with our Jewish brothers and sisters. Our Holy Father on his recent trip to Africa a group of interreligious and ecumenical leaders that while relationships can be demanding they are not optional. Dialogue is not a luxury it is essential to a world torn by conflict. The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity will be January 18 thru the 25 th The theme this year will be Called to Proclaim the Mighty Acts of the Lord. There will be a special Prayer service honoring this week at our neighbor Orthodox parish St. Apkar Armeinian Orthodox Church 8849 E. Cholla, Scottsdale. He was born into a poor family, but rose to become the Catholic Church s Apostle of Charity because of his focus on spreading the Gospels by serving the poor. He founded the Congregation of Missions for Brothers and Priests. Later with St. Louise de Marillac, a Parisian widow, he founded the Daughters of Charity, which mobilized women to serve the poor. These institutions created large-scale neighborhood level networks of people to aid the sick and the poor. St. Vincent de Paul said, Charity is the cement which binds Communities to God and persons to one another. We celebrate his feast day on September 27 th. He is the Patron of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul Next time we ll learn about a Daughters of Charity Sister, Blessed Rosalie Rendu and her role in establishing the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. RADIO FAMILY ROSARY AM New Time, New Station now on Immaculate Heart Radio Monday - Friday at 1:30-2:30pm. You can also listen to us on InternetIHRadio.com. For a schedule write RFR, P.O. Box 17284, Phoenix, AZ or call Genevieve at ADOPTION CAN BE AN OPTION Catholic Charities is the only licensed Catholic adoption agency in the Diocese. We bring our Catholic identity and values to the miracle of creating new families through infant adoption. We have many families on our waiting list BECAUSE they want to adopt through Catholic Charities, but we simply do not have enough infants for our families waiting to adopt. This seems hard to believe when we know that there are so many women experiencing unplanned pregnancies. Our pregnancy counseling program provides free, life-affirming support to those experiencing an unplanned pregnancy. We go to the clients, wherever they might be, and help them explore the life-affirming choices of parenting or placement with a loving adoptive family. If parenting, we help them to develop the skills and resources they need to parent successfully. If placing for adoption, we help them decide whether they would like an open or closed adoption and they choose the family. Our support is life-long for birth and adoptive parents as well as baby. No one should experience an unplanned pregnancy without compassionate, life-affirming support. For information contact pregnancysupport@cc-az.org. Our counselors are available 7 days a week, toll-free on our pregnancy hotline, WE ARE HERE FOR YOU ALL LIFE IS A BLESSING! Maggie's Place provides houses of hospitality and ongoing support to help pregnant and parenting women in need reach their goals, and welcomes them into a community filled with love and dignity. Are you interested in learning more about how to support our mission? WEEK OF PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY January 20, 7:00 p.m. - St. Apkar Armenian Apostolic Church 8849 E. Cholla (east of the 101 between Shea and Cactus, Scottsdale) The Church Unity Octave was first celebrated in January, 1908 in the chapel of the Atonement Franciscan Convent in upstate New York. Today, Christians around the world gather in prayer during the week of January every year to pray that the scandal of disunity among Christians will be overcome through the action of the Holy Spirit. The Catholic Church understands Spiritual Ecumenism to be the heart of the ecumenical movement. What may be judged to be impossible for us to achieve through human efforts alone is possible as God works in the hearts of all who seek to end the divisions that exist within the Body of Christ of which all people who profess faith in Jesus belong through baptism in real, but presently an imperfect communion. You are invited to join with Bishop Olmsted and other ecumenical leaders to pray that the will of Jesus, that all will be one in him, may one day be achieved. In 1993 the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity issued the Directory for the Application of Principles and Norms on Ecumenism and explicitly encouraged Catholic participation in the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity.
