When we take part in the devotion of the Stations of the Cross, traditionally we say, "Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world." That means more than just the people of this world; it means all of creation. As good stewards, we are called to attest to the glory of God in all he has created. Everywhere we look we can see evidence of his handiwork and have the opportunity to reflect on how he has created the world for our benefit. Seeing all of creation as redeemed because of the dying and rising of Christ helps us with this reflection. Truly, all things are made new. With only two weeks left in Lent, we still have a chance to echo the words of this Sunday's psalm, "Create a clean heart in me, O God." Perhaps we are unable to see the glory of God in creation because of our own sin. We need to repent and return to God, and then we can see with new eyes. Make this Easter a time for real, meaningful celebration as all of creation sings to the Lord. Pope Francis The annual Charity and Development Appeal (CDA) is underway. Thank you to the 76 families who have made a gift. Through March 6, SMG parishioners have pledged $34, towards our goal of $100,000. Each and every gift is important and provides vital support to the programs and organizations who rely on the CDA. CDA funds allow them to provide critical services and resources to our parishes, diocese and local communities. Ayman Khair, representing about 180 Christian families from Bethlehem will be onsite once again with beautiful religious articles carved from Olive wood. Families in the Holy Land have been dependent upon sales of their hand carved religious articles to tourists. Due to the conflict in the Middle East, the tourism has been cut off. In order to survive, they have turned to Christian communities in the United States to purchase their articles. These hand carved religious articles are beyond description. Carved from wood of the sacred Olive tree, this workmanship has been traditional for these families for hundreds of years. It is hoped that through the efforts of Mr. Khair, that these families have a little income and are able to stay living in the Holy Land. Amazingly enough, The Christian population dropped from 22% to less than 2% in the last 30 years. 6 N E W S & E V E N T S 2018 Eucharistic Mission March Friends of the Cathedral invites you to the 2018 Diocese of Phoenix Eucharistic Mission, facilitated by Fr. Sean Davidson and Fr. Declan Gibson of the Missionaries of the Most Holy Eucharist. The mission will open with Mass on Wednesday evening celebrated by Bishop Thomas J. Olmsted and the first mission talk at Ss. Simon and Jude Cathedral, 6351 N. 27th Ave., Phoenix. Thursday and Friday will be held at St. Paul, Phoenix, with morning and evening talks repeating so those who work during the day can receive the same great content in the evenings. Saturday, the mission will return to the Cathedral for two more talks and Vigil Mass with Bishop Olmsted. Sunday morning, join Bishop Olmsted and the Missionaries for the 9 a.m. Mass at Ss. Simon and Jude Cathedral (also broadcast live on AZTV Channel 7, youtube.com/ phoenixdiocese, and facebook.com/dioceseofphoenix). Bring your Lent to a fruitful end!
