Grades 9-12 Commemoration of the Faithful Departed (All Souls) During the month of November, the church remembers all those who have died. This year, we invite the community to bring photos of their departed loved ones on the weekend of October 28 to be displayed in church (on the platform area to the right of the altar) throughout the month of November. On the weekend of November 4, we will remember in a special way all of our parishioners who have died in the past year and read their names at Mass. 5 N E W S & E V E N T S The Many Faces of Stewardship at SMG Meet Mary Catherine Conklin. She has been a faithful parishioner at SMG for 36 years and has been deeply involved in numerous ministries and volunteer roles. Born and raised in Forest Park, IL, Mary Catherine, who had two older brothers, attended eight years of Catholic School at St. Bernadine s Parish. Following graduation from public high school she continued involvement at St. Bernadine s as a CCD teacher, Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist and Lector. Her jobs before moving to Arizona included two years at Sears headquarters and secretary of a public elementary school. In 1982 Mary Catherine moved to Arizona shortly after the death of her mother. Her parents had already relocated to Arizona in retirement. Upon arrival in Arizona she immediately joined SMG and became involved. Among other volunteer roles, she has in the past served on the Parish Council, assisted as Wedding Coordinator and has taken communion to the homebound. Currently, in addition to Lector and EM, she teaches kindergarten and first grade children in the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd program, and helps prepare snacks for the preschool kids three days a week. She also has been active in the Christ Child Society that provides support to disadvantaged mothers and children. Twice she has visited Medjugorie and says she was deeply moved by what she felt there. Mary Catherine has also been active in jobs and community affairs since moving to Arizona. She has worked in the Scottsdale School District as secretary of Pueblo School, at Mayo Clinic and Hospital from , and as a volunteer at Phoenix Children s Hospital. It was during her time at Mayo Clinic that she was designated to be the personal attendant to George H.W. and Barbara Bush on their annual check-up visits to the Clinic. She remembers them fondly as being such gracious and unpretentious people. Mary Catherine has two children and three grandchildren. Her son, a teacher, lives in Payson and her daughter in the Valley. Her only granddaughter currently attends ASU. Her eyes light up at the mention of SMG. She loves the parish because of the spirit of church and family she finds here. It is a blessing to the SMG community to have her presence.
