3 S T E WA R D S H I P N E W S 3 "What can I do to be a good steward and disciple of Jesus?" FRONTLINE FAITH Did you know that U.S. troops can sometimes go for weeks or even months without hearing a Mass or words of comfort from a chaplain/priest? Committed to being excellent Soldiers, Airmen, Sailors, Guardsmen, and Marines, these patriotic Americans and faithful Catholics struggle to find a balance, a point of spiritual equilibrium. The FRONTLINE FAITH Project delivers MP3 players preloaded with spiritual content, especially as it pertains to military service, to members of our armed forces currently deployed or returning from deployment, with special emphasis on injured troops and troops stationed in Iraq or Afghanistan. The FRONTLINE FAITH Players include an audio rendition of the Mass celebrated by The Most Reverend Timothy P. Broglio of the U.S. Archdiocese for the Military Services; a "Warrior Rosary" conceived by Lynda MacFarland, the wife of a career military man, using the sorrowful mysteries; "Centurions of Rome," a presentation made by the late Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y.; children's letters to soldiers read by the children themselves; an examination of conscience; and two-and-a-half hours of stories about faith in military life, including "The Grunt Padre" about a priest who ministered to infantry soldiers and a tale of a soldier who carried the Eucharist into battle. There are more than 300,000 Catholic troops currently serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. Catholics compose 20 percent of our military. Currently, there are 281 Catholic chaplains serving our troops. These dedicated priests compose 8 percent of the military chaplains. The spiritual needs of our troops are of utmost concern to our military chaplains. The FRONTLINE FAITH Players are given free of charge to our troops. While this is a Catholic initiative, this is an ecumenical endeavor. The FRONTLINE FAITH Players are given to every Soldier, Sailor, Airman, Guardsman, and Marine who wishes to receive one. Distribution of the players targets injured troops in military hospitals and wounded transition units and troops currently deployed or preparing for deployment. Distribution of the players has been arranged with the assistance of the Archbishop for Military Services and the 281 military chaplain/priests serving his archdiocese. Further assistance has been provided by American Airlines. STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS It often seems that everything is against us. The universe is vast, and society is complex. No one seems to care what we want. Part of that feeling is because we are creatures, and therefore limited. But part of this is the result of original sin, which causes us to want to make ourselves the center of the world, and we view every desire as a genuine need. St. Paul, however, wrote to the Philippians that he had learned to be content whether he had abundance or was hungry. In fact, he could even write, My God will fully supply whatever you need, in accord with his glorious riches in Christ Jesus. His trust in the Lord was not some sort of lofty sentiment expressed in comfort. No, he wrote this while a prisoner in a miserable Roman jail. When we have learned to view the world as St. Paul did, from the perspective of trust in God, it changes the way we view the gifts of time, talent, and treasure we have received, and we want to use them for God s glory and the service of others. Then we ll experience the Messianic banquet of which the Eucharist is the foretaste and accept Jesus invitation, the only invitation that really matters. Copyright SMG MINISTRY FAIR The founder of Frontline Faith will visit SMG THIS WEEKEND.

4 4 SCHEDULE OF EVENTS Gospel Reflections with Kevin Saunders - Please join us on Wednesdays (8:30-9:15am), in Piper Hall. 28TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME One of the pranks I pulled a few times with friends in college was to crash a wedding feast at a local banquet hall. Three or four of us would dress up enough to not stand out in the crowd. We would arrive just before dinner and mill around a bit enjoying a free beer and hoping that there would be enough empty seats at a table that we could sit together and not be noticed too much. If the questions got too intense there was always the excuse that we were really there to scope out the band for the wedding of one of us. As a last resort to close scrutiny, there was always the exit. It took a larger event to get away with this kind of prank, something more difficult with today's smaller, more intimate celebrations. In the Gospel, the king wanted a full banquet hall. But one man was unprepared, not appropriately attired. Even as college kids pulling a prank, we knew that we had no chance of getting a good dinner (or even a free beer) if we weren't at least half way decently dressed. Jeans and a T- shirt were not going to cut it for a wedding reception in those days. So on went the dress shirt and tie along with some nice pants to make a presentable outfit. Of course, access to the kingdom of God is not a prank, and just putting on some nice clothes will not ensure entrance to heaven. What we have to do is put on Christ, and have an interior disposition that conforms to our outward expressions of love and charity. Our inner faith must be strong, and our actions toward others must express what we believe. The "wedding garment" that we put on is not a shirt and tie in hopes of a free meal, but a life of prayer, devotion, and care for others that will lead to the banquet of life Liturgical Publications Inc BOOK SIGNING BY SHERRY BOAZ Book Signing with Sherry Boas. In future months, we will be presenting more information on what has been happening in this great work of the Church. Can't wait? Check out the Vatican website at Vatican.va.
