5 N E W S & E V E N T S SMG St. Vincent de Paul Conference The SMG St. Vincent de Paul Conference invites you to attend our meetings to learn more about our ministry. We meet at 10:00am, every other Sunday in Piper II (see parish calendar). If you or someone you know in our parish boundaries is experiencing a crisis and in need of help with food, clothing, rent, utilities or medical/dental attention, we have many resources available. Call SMG SVDP at , ext. 50. We are overwhelmed and grateful for your continued generosity toward our food drives and special donations. Our pantry is in need of Peanut Butter, Jelly, Tuna Fish, Soup (not broth), Crackers & Pasta. HO! HO! HO! It seems the holidays are almost upon us. Check one thing off your list and think about your 2018 AZ tax credit donation now. St. Vincent de Paul would be most grateful for your tax credit donation this year. Collection bins are located in Piper Hall, John XXIII Hall, or drop off at the parish office. The Many Faces of Stewardship at SMG... Meet Bill Minton. Bill has been a parishioner at St. Maria Goretti for over fifty years, from the beginning of the establishment of St. Maria Goretti. Bill told the story about his family attending Mass in the cafeteria at Saguaro High School while the first multi-use use building was under construction on the dirt lot at Granite Reef and Rose Lane. Bill reflects St. Maria has always been a place of faith, action and hope. Bill talked about his parents forming a foundation of faith with his two younger brothers and him. Bill further elaborates the community of believers, lay members, staff and clergy, built on that foundation. Bill is very clear when he talks about meeting Jesus here in scripture, in the sacraments and in the hearts of his Catholic friends and neighbors. Bill and his wife Celeine have raised their three children St. Maria Goretti praying for exactly these same blessings at home. Bill s stewardship at St. Maria Goretti includes being a lector at Mass. He also serves in men's ministries as part of the team facilitating the Catholic Men's Fellowship and most recently in our Knights of Columbus Council. In addition, Celeine and he worked with couples preparing for marriage. Over the fifty years as a parishioner, Bill has remained very active in participating in more than a dozen ministries and outreach programs. He is the person to turn to when there is a community need. Bill tells the story when Celeine and he were planning their life together, they served in a ministry as religious education teachers of 5th Graders. Bill continues with a smile on his face, the kids were a challenge -- the girls were boycrazy while the boys were just wild! We decided to include the class in our wedding by bringing up the gifts. What were we thinking? Were we inviting trouble? To Bill and Celeine s great relief, the class had transformed into young men and women; respectful and dignified. Bill s heart-felt message to all parishioners is; if you are considering ministry involvement, I have found that parish life thrives when its members take action and engage in ministry. It's not about what you can get out of it, it's what you can give. Next time you see Bill around the campus ask him to tell you a story about the 50 years at St. Maria Goretti. Our Lady of Guadalupe Feast - December 12 Under this title, Our Lady is the patron of Mexico, the United States and all the Americas, as well as the protector of unborn children. In 1531, she appeared in a vision to the peasant Juan Diego on Tepeyac Hill near Mexico City and charged him with asking the bishop to build a church on that spot. But the bishop demanded a sign, so Our Lady had Juan gather flowers in his cloak in December to take to the bishop. When Juan opened his cloak, the colorful image of Guadalupe was emblazoned on the cactus-cloth. That icon is preserved in the most famous shrine in the Western Hemisphere, and Our Lady of Guadalupe continues to inspire poor and oppressed people worldwide.
