2 Pastor s Corner In my ministry in the inner-city parish where I m pastor, I m often overwhelmed by the seemingly unsolvable problems we face. How to tackle poverty, unemployment, crime? How to get practical help to folks? How to bring together those with resources and those with needs? How to deal with daily frustrations? In this tough ministry, one of my Franciscan colleagues has a very helpful strategy for me and our parish community. He says there s two ways to do this ministry. One is a way that stresses people s needs. This need-based approach can often lead to frustration as we face those overwhelming problems. A second way is an asset-based approach. Everyone has a gift. Every person has a unique dignity given by God. Everyone is an asset in our community. The poorest person economically may have a talent or gift not immediately apparent. In this approach, we re all in relationship, and in that relationship, love and service can flow two ways. Maybe that s part of what Jesus wants to teach us in today s parable of the talents. We ve all been given gifts by God. In the parable, praise goes to those who develop those gifts; hoarding them or burying them even for security s sake is not an option. In our faith communities we re challenged to find ways to discover the gifts each person has, and to discover how to put them at the service of the Kingdom. I m Father Greg Friedman with the Sunday Soundbite, from St. Anthony Messenger Press on the Web at FranciscanRadio.org. R.E. Mass November 27th Our Religious Education department has set the date for the R.E. Mass for Sunday, November 27 at 11:45 am. R.E. Mass replaces classes for the day and is a mandatory function. Attendance will be taken. Family members are encouraged to attend with the students. The center pews of the church will be reserved for the students and their families. November 27th is the first Sunday of Advent and is also a regularly scheduled Youth/Young Adult Mass. Scripture Readings Sunday, Nov. 13 Prv 31:10-13, 19-20, Ps 128:1-5 1 Thes 5:1-6 Mt 25:14-30 Monday, Nov Mc 1:10-15, 41-43, 54-57, Ps 119:53, 61, 134, 150, 155, 158 Lk 18:35-43 Tuesday, Nov Mc 6:18-31 Ps 3:2-8 Lk 19:1-10 Wednesday, Nov Mc 7:1, Ps 17:1, 5-6, 8, 15 Lk 19:11-28 Thursday, Nov Mc 2:15-29 Ps 50:1-2, 5-6, Lk 19:41-44 Friday, Nov Mc 4:36-37, (Ps) 1 Chr 29:10-12 Lk 19:45-48 Saturday, Nov Mc 6:1-13 Ps 9:2-4, 6, 16, 19 Lk 20:27-40 Sunday, Nov. 20 Ez 34:11-12, Ps 23:1-3, Cor 15:20-26, 28
3 Prayer of Thanksgiving for Priests Lord God, Thank you for these men. We know they do not seek or desire recognition for the Priesthood you have chosen them for, yet it is to You we wish to give thanks for calling them to guide and nourish our parish during the years of our existence. We ask You to bless them, wherever they are now, for providing the Eucharist for us our Food for the Journey and for proclaiming The Good News with conviction and enthusiasm at St. Joseph. Catholic Campaign for Human Development Grant them the joy experienced on their Ordination Day all the days of their lives and look kindly upon them as they strive to do Your will. Bless them abundantly, care for them tenderly and above all, let them feel the love and appreciation we have for them. We ask this through Jesus Christ, Our Lord. Amen Food Pantry Requests: Spam, Corned Beef, Corned Beef Hash, Vienna Sausage, Canned Pastas, Pork & Beans, Rice and Cereal. Next week, we will take up the Collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD). CCHD was founded 40 years ago by the bishops of the United States when they realized that the lives of those in need would not improve until the systems and policies that keep people in poverty were changed. For 40 years, CCHD has funded community groups that seek justice and create lasting change. Fight poverty in America. Defend human dignity. Give to the CCHD Collection. Make a Difference Luncheon The annual St. Joseph Parish Make a Difference Luncheon has been scheduled for Sunday, November 20 and will be held in the downstairs meeting room. This annual event is coordinated by Avelina Espinas and is intended to provide food and a bit of fellowship to members of our parish who are homebound or alone. Meals will be available for delivery or you may join Avelina and her crew for lunch in the Rectory meeting room from 1 to 3 pm. Donations are being sought for turkeys and ham (please drop off before Wednesday November 16), dinner rolls, cranberry relish, and pumpkin pies. Mahalo for your help!
