Phil has been a parishioner since 1988 and has a Master s Degree in Theology from the University of San Francisco. He is on the RCIA core team and is working on his Catechist Certificate from the Kino Institute of the Diocese of Phoenix. FEAST OF THE HOLY FAMILY The Feast of the Holy Family is not just about the Holy Family, but about our own families too. The main purpose of the Feast is to present the Holy Family as the model for all Christian families, and for domestic life in general. Our family life becomes sanctified when we live the life of the Church within our homes. This is called the "domestic church" or the "church in miniature." St. John Chrysostom urged all Christians to make each home a "family church," and in doing so, we sanctify the family unit. Just how does one live out the Church in the family? The best way is by making Christ the center of family and individual life. Ways to do this include: reading scripture regularly, praying daily, attending Mass at least on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation, imitating the actions of the Holy Family, going to confession frequently, and so forth, all done together as a family unit. The Holy Family feast is a good time to remember the family unit and pray for our human and spiritual families. We also may take this feast to reflect on the value and sanctity of the family unit, and to evaluate our own family life. What ways may it be improved? What would Jesus, Mary, and Joseph do? Finally, we can use this feast to ask ourselves what are we doing to promote the family within our own cultures, neighborhoods, and communities. Father, help us to live as the Holy Family, united in respect and love. Bring us to the joy and peace of your eternal home. Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Your ideas are welcome. Stop by the parish office and complete a suggestion form, or call the office at BLANKET DONATION Donate fleece blankets to help keep the homeless warm this winter. Blankets should be the size that will fit into a back pack. Collection bins are located at the church doors. You may also drop off your blanket donations at Piper Hall on Sunday or in the parish office during the week. STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS The primary purpose of The Feast of the Holy Family is to present the Holy Family as a model for Christian families. In Italy there is a saying, La famiglia é tutto, which means, the family is everything. Our Holy Father Pope Francis has made families one of the focal points of his papacy. He organized a conference on families in Speaking to the gathered families, he said, You cannot have a family without dreams. I am very fond of dreams in families. For nine months, every mother and father dream about their baby. They dream about what kind of child he or she will be You can t have a family without dreams. Once a family loses the ability to dream, children do not grow, love does not grow, life shrivels up and dies. So I ask you each evening, when you make your examination of conscience, to also ask yourselves this question: Today did I dream about my children s future? Today did I dream about the love of my husband, my wife? Did I dream about my parents and grandparents who have gone before me? All of today s readings have to do with families and family life. The reading from Sirach, our First Reading, emphasized the Fourth Commandment, Honor thy father and mother. We are commanded to respect and love our parents. However, it is a two way street. The Gospel Reading speaks of the development of Jesus, and that should inspire parents to understand that our prayers are the same as the prayers of Joseph and Mary that our children will become strong in spirit and filled with wisdom. "What Child Is This?" is a Christmas carol whose lyrics were written by William Chatterton Dix, in At the time of composing the carol, Dix worked as an insurance company manager and had been struck by a severe illness. While recovering, he underwent a spiritual renewal that led him to write several hymns, including lyrics to this carol that was subsequently set to the tune of "Greensleeves", a traditional English folk song. Although it was written in Great Britain, the carol is more popular in the United States than in its country of origin today. (480) x50 ECUMENICAL AND AND INTER INTER FAITH FAITH UPDATE UPDATE The Church promotes unity among all the followers of Christ which flows from our common baptism and seeks the fullness of unity which is a condition of evangelization. The restoration of unity among all Christians is one of the principal concerns of the Second Vatican Council. Division damages the holy cause of preaching the Gospel to every creature. Thus we are asked to pray faithfully that unity will be achieved by those separated. The Church of Phoenix is called to participate in the quest for unity by promoting ecumenical and inter-religious relations as mandated by Vatican II. The Church has urged the fai thful to seek unity with her separated Christian brothers and sisters and respect the truth found in all religions. It is essential that each parish as part of its mission seek ways to further unity with all Christians and non-christians. As part of this call we at St. Maria Goretti Parish join the Diocese of Phoenix in this quest. Visit azliferally.org. WORLD DAY OF THE SICK HEALING MASS The Order of Malta invites you to the bilingual 2018 World Day of the Sick Healing Mass on Saturday, February 10, at 1 p.m. at Ss. Simon and Jude Cathedral, 6351 N. 27th Ave., Phoenix. Mass will include: Anointing of the Sick Blessing of Caregiver Hands Blessing with Lourdes Water Attendees will receive Lourdes water with holy medals that have been blessed by our principal celebrant, the Most Rev. 9 O T H E R N E W S 9 PLEASE PRAY FOR VOCATIONS - DECEMBER 31, 2017 Families need blessings of patience, forgiveness, gratefulness and love. What will you do to show your love for your family? Ask for the grace to be holy. (Colossians 3: 12-21).
