3 S T E WA R D S H I P N E W S 3 "What can I do to be a good steward and disciple of Jesus?" STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS Vista Del Camino has an ongoing need for water (individual size bottles) to distribute to the homeless throughout the community during our hot summer months. Through the generosity of SMG parishioners, we donate hundreds of cases of water each summer. Your continued support is much needed and greatly appreciated! Water can be dropped off at the gift cart on Sundays or in the parish office during the week. Andre House distributes prepackaged plastic bags to the homeless packed with numerous essential items. Parishioners may donate the items needed below (for ease in organizing, we ask that you donate items according to last name): If you last name begins with A, B, C, D, E or F: Hand sanitizer, sun screen, wet ones, quart-size Ziplock slide bags. Last names beginning with G, H, I, J, or K: Band aids, chapstick, white socks (men s & women s), sun visors Last names beginning with L, M, N, O, P or Q: Bandanas, combs, goldfish or sandwich crackers, bars of soap Last names beginning with R, S, T, U, V, W, X, Y, Z: Bottled water, soft granola bars, nutri-grain bars, small boxes of raisins, gallon-size Ziplock slide bags. Donations can be left in the boxes at the church doors or at the parish office. *Dollar Tree, Dollar General or the.99 Store usually have good bargains on most of these items. PREPARE FOR THE SUNDAY READINGS The Mass A Conversation with God Each weekend we have the opportunity to listen to the word of God in Scripture and listen to a reflection on Scripture in a short homily. We invite you to prepare for your conversation with God this coming weekend by reading beforehand the Scriptures that will be used in the Mass and by listening to a homily reflective of those Scripture passages. You can find this on a web site designed by Fr. Boyle. It is available on an iphone, ipad or PC. Use your browser to access: Our First Reading from Second Kings, chapter 4, features Elisha. You may recall that Elisha was plowing in a field when the prophet Elijah called him to follow him. Something happened at that moment and Elisha chose to do it, which is what brought him to this point in his journey (as reported in today s Holy Scripture). We often address the fact that each of us is called as well. Our calling, like Elisha s and like those of Christ s Apostles, is really not that much different. Christ said, Follow Me, and the Apostles basically dropped everything, ceased pursuing what they were doing in some cases with good jobs and vocations and followed Christ. We are called to follow the Lord from the moment of our Baptism, but how many of us actually take that calling seriously? It is not just a question of hearing the call; the key is whether we are listening for it? It is there, but we must be aware of it in order to respond. Elisha s call and our calls are signs of God at work. God has a plan for each of us. We are the means by which God s work is continued in our parishes, in our communities, and in the Church. God s ministry on earth will be carried out and accomplished. None of us is the entire ministry; we can all be replaced. However, by the same token in God s eyes we are absolutely necessary. Are we ready to respond? Are we ready to be disciples of the Lord? SUMMER GIVING It s summer vacation time, and we sincerely thank our parishioners who mail or deliver their weekly envelopes to the parish office while they are away. As many of you understand, our parish expenses and obligations do not take a summer vacation when you do, so it is very helpful to be able to rely on your continued support even when you cannot personally attend Mass here. Before leaving town, set up your electronic giving by visiting the parish website at click the donate button and create your account. It s easy and secure! No need to worry about sending your envelope, and the parish is able to budget accordingly.

4 4 SCHEDULE OF EVENTS Gospel Reflections With Kevin Saunders. On Summer Break. Come back for a four-week summer session on August 2, 9, 16, 23! Tetra String Quartet Faculty Concert Tuesday, July 18th at 7:30pm. Free and open to the public! 13TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME "Whoever loses his life for my sake will find it." When Jesus says paradoxical things like this, we can still trust him. Even when he makes claims that, at first glance, seem impossible, we know that he's not talking gibberish. Why? Because Jesus lived the ultimate paradox: he brought life out of death. His resurrection proves for us that things are not always as they appear. The Crucifixion, which looked like the end of Jesus' influence, was actually a tremendous new beginning. So when Jesus promises that we will find life through a kind of death, we shouldn't question his claim. Of course in today's Gospel, Jesus isn't necessarily talking about physical death, although the "red" martyrs who suffer for him do in fact find their reward in eternal life. "White" martyrdom, on the other hand, is a kind of death to self that doesn't involve bloodshed. It means putting love and generous service ahead of our own self-gratification. It means doing these things for the sake of Christ. When he tells us to love our neighbors as ourselves, this is what he's talking about. So, how can we be white martyrs today? How can we sacrifice our desire for perfect comfort, or entertainment on demand, or status or pleasure or sleep or whatever else for the sake of serving another person? In our families, in our schools and workplaces, in our parishes, in our neighborhoods and our communities, there are myriad opportunities to "lose our lives" for the sake of Christ. But don't forget, in dying to ourselves, we will find our lives in a new way! The fulfillment Christ offers us in return, both now and in eternity, will be far better than anything we try to cling to on our own. STRING QUARTET SUMMER WORKSHOP RECITALS We are pleased to host once again a number of talented young string students and their instructors for a String Quartet Summer Workshop in July. (480) x50 ECUMENICAL AND INTER FAITH UPDATE The Church promotes unity among all the followers of Christ which flows from our common baptism and seeks the fullness of unity which is a condition of evangelization. The restoration of unity among all Christians is one of the principal concerns of the Second Vatican Council. Division damages the holy cause of preaching the Gospel to every creature. Thus we are asked to pray faithfully that unity will be achieved by those separated. The Church of Phoenix is called to participate in the quest for unity by promoting ecumenical and inter-religious relations as mandated by Vatican II. The Church has urged the faithful to seek unity with her separated Christian brothers and sisters and respect the truth found in all religions. It is essential that each parish as part of its mission seek ways to further unity with all Christians and non-christians. As part of this call we at St. Maria Goretti Parish join the Diocese of Phoenix in this quest. Those interested in furthering this ministry please contact Tom Brady SOCIETY OF ST VINCENT DE PAUL INFORMATION FEED. CLOTHE. HOUSE. We bring our Catholic identity and values to the miracle of creating new families through infant adoption. We have many families on our waiting list BECAUSE they want to adopt through Catholic Charities, but we simply do not have enough infants for our families waiting to adopt. This seems hard to believe when we know that there are so many women experiencing unplanned pregnancies. Our pregnancy counseling program provides free, life-affirming support to those experiencing an unplanned pregnancy. We go to the clients, wherever they might be, and help them explore the life-affirming choices of parenting or placement with a loving adoptive family. If parenting, we help them to develop the skills and resources they need to parent successfully. If placing for adoption, we help them decide whether they would like an open or closed adoption and they choose the family. Our support is life-long for birth and adoptive parents as well as baby. No one should experience an unplanned pregnancy without compassionate, life-affirming support. For information contact pregnancysupport@cc-az.org. Our counselors are available 7 days a week, toll-free on our pregnancy hotline WE ARE HERE FOR YOU ALL LIFE IS A BLESSING! Maggie's Place provides houses of hospitality and ongoing support to help pregnant and parenting women in need reach their goals, and welcomes them into a community filled with love and dignity. Are you interested in learning more about how to support our mission? We are currently seeking female applicants 21+ years who are interested in serving for one year as live-in volunteers with our mothers and their babies. For more information please contact Amanda Ayala at missioncorps@maggiesplace.org or visit maggiesplace.org. LET US PRAY... All the faithful are invited to join us as we pray for the unborn the little ones that cannot speak for themselves.
