SMG 50TH ANNIVERSARY Parish Picture Directory - We are partnering with Lifetouch to create a parish family picture directory. Photography sessions will be held in Piper Hall on several dates in November with easy online scheduling. Visit or follow the link from our parish website. We will also have appointment sign-up opportunities after Mass. Our goal is to have EVERY family participate and be in the directory, which we will place in the church time capsule at our parish picnic. Every family participating will receive a free 8x10 photo and a picture directory. **There is no obligation to purchase photos. Those who can do more, volunteer. ~Author Unknown STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS Therefore, stay awake, for you know neither the day nor the hour. Christ cautions us often concerning our sense of conversion and timing. It has a lot to do with procrastination that is, putting something off or delaying something which needs to be accomplished. Most of us understand the importance of living up to Christ s expectations and living life in a way to which He has called us. In other words, we comprehend that we need to be His disciples, but we seem to find excuses and reasons not to totally commit to that. That is exactly the issue Jesus is addressing in today s Gospel from St. Matthew, which is essentially the Parable of the Ten Virgins. Are we truly prepared for the return of Christ, the Second Coming? In a sense it has everything to do with death. We may not wish to think about it but we do know that death is inevitable, and have we done everything we need to do to be prepared? It was St. Augustine of Hippo who said, God has promised forgiveness to your repentance, but He has not promised tomorrow to your procrastination. Like the Virgins in the parable, we cannot wait. Now, this very moment, is the time for us to do what God has called us to do, and that is live lives of stewardship in service and love to others. There are indeed no promises about tomorrow, but Christ has offered us hope for eternal life. Have we done everything we need to do to be ready? PREPARE FOR SUNDAY MASS The Mass A Conversation with God Each weekend we have the opportunity to listen to the word of God in Scripture and l listen to a reflection on Scripture in a short homily. We invite you to prepare for your conversation with God this coming weekend by reading beforehand the Scriptures that will be used in the Mass and by listening to a homily reflective of those Scripture passages. The foolish versus the wise. Today's parable sets these two groups in stark contrast to one another. Two crowds of young women wait for a wedding feast. One group comes prepared for the unexpected, the other just assumes everything will go according to schedule. But it doesn't! The Bridegroom is late, and the foolish virgins are left out in the dark--literally--while the wise ones enjoy the feast inside. The lesson here is not just about having foresight and gathering the corresponding equipment. It's about being ready for the second coming of Christ. Jesus himself is the "Bridegroom." Traditionally we refer to the Church as the "Bride of Christ" and we, as the people of God who constitute the Church, are even now awaiting the real feast, the culmination of time when Jesus returns. But are we standing among the wise or the foolish as we wait? Jesus tells us today, "Stay awake, for you know neither the day nor the hour." Are we spiritually awake? Do we have extra oil to see us through, or are we hitting the bottom of the barrel and running on spiritual fumes so to speak? Do we think it's enough to do the bare minimum as we wait for Christ--stepping into church without really being present, or calling ourselves Christian without really taking up the challenge of the cross? In order to avoid standing outside the feast with the foolish, we will want to make sure we fill our flasks with oil or, in other words, fill our hearts with the love of God, fill our minds with his word and his teachings, and fill our souls with the virtues that unite us to his will. (480) x50 ECUMENICAL AND INTER FAITH UPDATE The Church promotes unity among all the followers of Christ which flows from our common baptism and seeks the fullness of unity which is a condition of evangelization. The restoration of unity among all Christians is one of the principal concerns of the Second Vatican Council. Division damages the holy cause of preaching the Gospel to every creature. Thus we are asked to pray faithfully that unity will be achieved by those separated. The Church of Phoenix is called to participate in the quest for unity by promoting ecumenical and inter-religious relations as mandated by Vatican II. The Church has urged the faithful to seek unity with her separated Christian brothers and sisters and respect the truth found in all religions. It is essential that each parish as part of its mission seek ways to further unity with all Christians and non-christians. Calling all elves! Join us to start the Christmas season by helping others. Santa s Workshop will open at 8 AM December 2, 2017 in Piper Hall. We will start unloading the trailer and shed and sorting the boxes and setting up the hall and then filling 1760 gift bags for those less fortunate. The recipients range in age from toddlers to seniors. All ages are welcome to help. Children under 12 need to bring an adult with them if possible. Lunch will be served. We look forward to seeing you even if just for a few minutes Merry Christmas! ADOPTION GUADALUPE CAN OUTREACH BE AN OPTION For years, St Maria Goretti parish has been helping to bring the blessings of the Christmas season to 30 families in Guadalupe. We live in an affluent city but some of the families that we help still live in houses with dirt floors. Every year the food collected the first Sunday in December is given to Guadalupe Outreach. Anything you can give is welcome but each family is given certain specific items and if not donated, will have to be purchased by the Outreach coordinator. When shopping for items for the December food drive, please remember these items: coffee (3lb bag), sugar (5lb bag), flour (5lb bag), instant oatmeal, tomato sauce, hot chocolate mix, cooking oil, salt, mayonnaise, peanut butter (large), canned goods (beans, peas, carrots, corn, peaches/fruit), canned chicken, Black Forest canned ham (3lbs). Put a note on your refrigerator or on your phone and help any way you can.
