CHARITY AND DEVELOPMENT APPEAL As One Family in Christ, we can support the work of over 70 agencies and ministries across the Diocese. Together we can provide seminarian education, a safe home for mothers and newborns and a televised Sunday Mass to ill and homebound Catholics. These organizations shine the light of hope into the lives of thousands of people. Help us provide the opportunity to meet the needs of those within our parishes and beyond to encounter the Living Christ. Through May 16: Pledged: $71,592 Parish goal: $100,000 CATHOLIC COMMUNICATION CAMPAIGN Today, we will take up the Collection for the Catholic Communication Campaign (CCC). This collection communicates the Gospel through Catholic social media activities and enriches our faith through television, radio, social media, podcasts, and print media. Please be generous in this week s collection and support this important work. Remember, half of your donation stays in our diocese to support local communications needs. The CCC is how we share our experience of faith, worship, and witness to the world. PREPARE FOR THE SUNDAY READINGS STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS Our first reading is from the Book of Acts. In fact, it is the beginning of that Book. Acts was written by St. Luke. It is a continuation of his Gospel in many ways. We do not learn that much about Luke from the New Testament. Most historians agree that he was a doctor; he was a Gentile; and he was a companion of St. Paul. Acts is basically the continuation of Jesus work as described in the Gospels. In effect it describes how the Good News traveled from Jerusalem to Rome. Our readings today are filled with reminders that Jesus work is not completed. He commissioned His followers to continue it after His Ascension into Heaven. Among those commissioned so to speak is each of us. The Lord s work continues from that day to today. However, for it to continue and for the love He shared and displayed to be the factor it needs to be in our parish and in the Church and in the world it is reliant upon us. It was St. Teresa of Avila who wrote, Christ has no body now but yours. No hands, no feet on earth but yours. Yours are the eyes through which He looks compassion on this world. Yours are the feet with which He walks to do good. Yours are the hands through which He blesses all the world. Yours are the hands, yours are the feet, yours are the eyes, you are His Body. Christ has no body now on earth but yours. SUMMER GIVING The Mass A Conversation with God Each weekend we have the opportunity to listen to the word of God in Scripture and listen to a reflection on Scripture in a short homily. We invite you to prepare for your conversation with God this coming weekend by reading beforehand the Scriptures that will be used in the Mass and by listening to a homily reflective of those Scripture passages. You can find this on a web site designed by Fr. Boyle. It is available on an iphone, ipad or PC. Use your browser to access: VISTA DEL CAMINO Summer is fast approaching and we sincerely thank our parishioners who mail or deliver their weekly envelopes to the parish office while they are away. As many of you understand, our parish expenses and obligations do not take a summer vacation when you do, so it is very helpful to be able to rely on your continued support even when you cannot personally attend Mass here. Before leaving town, set up your electronic giving by visiting the parish website at click the donate button and create your account. It s easy and secure! No need to worry about sending your envelope, and the parish is able to budget accordingly. Vista Del Camino has an ongoing need for water (individual size bottles) to distribute to the homeless throughout the community during our hot summer months. Through the generosity of SMG parishioners, we donate hundreds of cases of water each summer. Your continued support is much needed and greatly appreciated! Water can be dropped off at the gift cart on Sundays or in the parish office during the week.

ASCENSION OF OUR LORD "And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age." What consoling words Jesus had for his disciples, even as he was about to bring an end to his earthly ministry. He had spent some time with them after his resurrection, but now his mission was complete and he was about to return to be with his Father in heaven. Undoubtedly this must have been a difficult moment for the disciples. But as if to reassure them, Jesus gives this remarkable promise: that he will ALWAYS be with them, even when he is no longer physically present. We know, of course, that the presence he is referring to comes through the gift of the Holy Spirit. And what is most wonderful about this promise is that it also applies to us! Jesus is with US always. His presence dwells in our hearts through the sacrament of baptism in which we receive the real, indwelling gift of the Holy Spirit in our hearts. We are not alone! The sometimes difficult journey of Christian life is not one we need to navigate solo. Christ himself ascended into heaven so that he could make himself present in a more universal and timeless way through his Spirit to all people who call upon him. Thus we rejoice on this feast of the Ascension. It's not so much about Jesus leaving. Rather, it's about him continuing his mission in a new way, a way that includes us very directly. So let us remember that Jesus is present with us, even when we cannot see him next to us or hear his voice loud and clear. Let us call upon his Holy Spirit when we need guidance, comfort, or direction. And today, let us give thanks to God the Father for sending his Son to save us and for giving us his Spirit to accompany us on our own journey of life. A MEMORIAL DAY PRAYER Dear God, On this day we remember the sacrifices made for us by those who were willing to give their lives to ensure that our own would be spent in freedom. Let us never forget to pray, not only for the dead, but also for those still living and working in the cause of freedom around the world. As we celebrate and enjoy this time, give comfort and grace to those men and women who have sacrificed so much for our sake. St. Martin, St. George and St. Joan of Arc: pray for the protection of our soldiers in their efforts, and bring them home safely at the end of their duties wherever that home may be. Amen. Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is on a break for the summer but don t worry we will start back up in September. (480) x50 ECUMENICAL AND INTER FAITH UPDATE The Church promotes unity among all the followers of Christ which flows from our common baptism and seeks the fullness of unity which is a condition of evangelization. The restoration of unity among all Christians is one of the principal concerns of the Second Vatican Council. Division damages the holy cause of preaching the Gospel to every creature. Thus we are asked to pray faithfully that unity will be achieved by those separated. The Church of Phoenix is called to participate in the quest for unity by promoting ecumenical and inter-religious relations as mandated by Vatican II. The Church has urged the faithful to seek unity with her separated Christian brothers and sisters and respect the truth found in all religions. It is essential that each parish as part of its mission seek ways to further unity with all Christians and non-christians. As part of this call we at St. Maria Goretti Parish join the Diocese of Phoenix in this quest. We bring our Catholic identity and values to the miracle of creating new families through infant adoption. We have many families on our waiting list BECAUSE they want to adopt through Catholic Charities, but we simply do not have enough infants for our families waiting to adopt. This seems hard to believe when we know that there are so many women experiencing unplanned pregnancies. Our pregnancy counseling program provides free, life-affirming support to those experiencing an unplanned pregnancy. We go to the clients, wherever they might be, and help them explore the life-affirming choices of parenting or placement with a loving adoptive family. If parenting, we help them to develop the skills and resources they need to parent successfully.
