1 THIRD SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY January 22, :30 a.m. Jesus Calls the Disciples (from an 11th Century manuscript) C.E. Visminas

2 WELCOME Welcome to First United Methodist Church, we are delighted that you have chosen to worship with us this morning. Founded in 1821, First Church is the oldest Protestant church in the area and the oldest Methodist church in Florida. This historic church, with four regular Sunday services, has a membership of 3200 and is overflowing with life. If you are visiting, we hope that you will consider becoming a member of our church family. You may join any Sunday by profession of faith or transfer of membership. Come and be a part of what God is doing here in ECUMENICAL SUNDAY In the Methodist Church, January 18 to 25 has been set aside as a time to pray and focus on Christian unity across all denominations and around the world. Today is Ecumenical Sunday. On this day, during our worship, we want to connect with other Methodist churches around the world as we focus on and pray for Christian unity among all churches. Join us in praying for Christian unity throughout the rest of the week as well. NURSERY & CHILDREN S BULLETINS Nursery is available this morning for children up to five years old. If you need help locating the nursery, please see an usher or greeter for assistance. Also, children s worship bulletins and crayons are available in the narthex. VISITOR/NEW MEMBER CLASS We welcome all visitors and new members that are interested in learning more about First Church to an introductory class that consists of four parts. The class assembles at 9:30am in room PH101 next door in the Perry Home. Today s class, Serving at First Church will help you find your place to use your gifts and talents in service in the church and community. On January 29, Tour of First Church will walk you through the historic buildings of our campus. The class cycle will begin again on February 5. We hope you join us each week. PRAYER Prayer is a big part of our worship. If you are in need of prayer this morning, there are blue Prayer Request cards in each pew that will go to our Pastoral Care Team. If you want to pray for those in our congregation that are in need, there is also a public prayer list available on the bulletin board in the Church Office. If you are interested in receiving the church prayer list weekly, contact Ginger Raines at GRaines@fumcpensacola.com and ask to be added to the prayer chain. NEXT WEEK at FIRST CHURCH Join us next week here at First Church as we come together to worship God on the Fourth Sunday after the Epiphany. Dr. Wesley Wachob will preach at the 8:00, 9:30, and 11:00am worship services in the Main Sanctuary. The Rev. Brandon Bures will preach at the 11:00am ICON worship service. Next week s lectionary scriptures: Micah 6:1-8; Psalm 15; 1 Corinthians 1:18-31; Matthew 5:1-12.

5 TODAY S LECTIONARY SCRIPTURES First Lesson: Isaiah 9:1-4. The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light." A word of hope for a land where Israel (Samaria) and Syria had fought most of their major battles in the past and were about to fight (or had already begun fighting) Judah without regard for the good of the people who called that land home. Psalm: 27:1, 4-9. This Psalm works as a response to the first reading if we join it as a prayer of those who live in a "land of deep darkness." Second Lesson: 1 Corinthians 1: Paul says, "I appeal to you... that there be no divisions among you... be united in the same mind and the same purpose.... Has Christ been divided?" Gospel Lesson: Matthew 4: In fulfillment of prophecy, Jesus begins his public ministry in Galilee. He calls Simon and Andrew and the sons of Zebedee to be his disciples. NEW! DAILY READINGS (Find new weekly readings in each week s bulletin in 2017) The daily readings expand the range of biblical reading in worship and personal devotion by providing daily citations for the full three-year cycle of the Revised Common Lectionary. These readings complement the Sunday readings: Monday through Wednesday readings help the reader reflect on and digest what they heard in worship; Thursday through Saturday readings help prepare the reader for the Sunday ahead. MONDAY: Psalm 27:7-14 Judges 6:11-24 Ephesians 5:6-14 TUESDAY: Psalm 27:7-14 Judges 7:12-22 Philippians 2:12-18 WEDNESDAY: Psalm 27:7-14 Genesis 49:1-2, 8-13, Luke 1:67-79 THURSDAY: Psalm 15 Deuteronomy 16: Peter 3:8-12 FRIDAY: Psalm 15 Deuteronomy 24:17-25:4 1 Timothy 5:17-24 SATURDAY: Psalm 15 Micah 3:1-4 John 13:31-35 NOTES
