3 Introit: Forty Days And Forty Nights (NEH 67) Collect: Almighty God, whose Son Jesus Christ fasted forty days in the wilderness, and was tempted as we are, yet without sin: give us grace to discipline ourselves in obedience to your Spirit; and, as you know our weakness, so may we know your power to save; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen First Reading: Deuteronomy When you have come into the land that the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance to possess, and you possess it, and settle in it, 2 you shall take some of the first of all the fruit of the ground, which you harvest from the land that the Lord your God is giving you, and you shall put it in a basket and go to the place that the Lord your God will choose as a dwelling for his name. 3 You shall go to the priest who is in office at that time, and say to him, Today I declare to the Lord your God that I have come into the land that the Lord swore to our ancestors to give us. 4 When the priest takes the basket from your hand and sets it down before the altar of the Lord your God, 5 you shall make this response before the Lord your God: A wandering Aramean was my ancestor; he went down into Egypt and lived there as an alien, few in number, and there he became a great nation, mighty and populous. 6 When the Egyptians treated us harshly and afflicted us, by imposing hard labour on us, 7 we cried to the Lord, the God of our ancestors; the Lord heard our 3

4 voice and saw our affliction, our toil, and our oppression. 8 The Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, with a terrifying display of power, and with signs and wonders; 9 and he brought us into this place and gave us this land, a land flowing with milk and honey. 10 So now I bring the first of the fruit of the ground that you, O Lord, have given me. You shall set it down before the Lord your God and bow down before the Lord your God. 11 Then you, together with the Levites and the aliens who reside among you, shall celebrate with all the bounty that the Lord your God has given to you and to your house. Second Reading: Romans 10.8b-13 The word is near you, on your lips and in your heart (that is, the word of faith that we proclaim); 9 because if you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For one believes with the heart and so is justified, and one confesses with the mouth and so is saved. 11 The scripture says, No one who believes in him will be put to shame. 12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; the same Lord is Lord of all and is generous to all who call on him. 13 For, Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. Gradual: Psalm , It is a good thing to give thanks to the Lord and to sing praises to your name, O Most High; 2 To tell of your love early in the morning and of your faithfulness in the night-time, 9 For lo, your enemies, O Lord, lo, your enemies shall perish, 4

5 and all the workers of iniquity shall be scattered. 10 But my horn you have exalted like the horns of wild oxen; I am anointed with fresh oil. 11 My eyes will look down on my foes; my ears shall hear the ruin of the evildoers who rise up against me. 12 The righteous shall flourish like a palm tree, and shall spread abroad like a cedar of Lebanon. 13 Such as are planted in the house of the Lord shall flourish in the courts of our God. 14 They shall still bear fruit in old age; they shall be vigorous and in full leaf; 15 That they may show that the Lord is true; he is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in him. Gospel Reading: Luke Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness, 2 where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing at all during those days, and when they were over, he was famished. 3 The devil said to him, If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become a loaf of bread. 4 Jesus answered him, It is written, One does not live by bread alone. 5 Then the devil led him up and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. 6 And the devil said to him, To you I will give their glory and all this authority; for it has been given over to me, and I give it to anyone I please. 7 If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours. 8 Jesus answered him, It is written, Worship the Lord your God, and serve only him. 9 Then the devil took him to Jerusalem, and placed him on the pinnacle of the temple, saying to him, If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, 10 for it is written, 5

6 He will command his angels concerning you, to protect you, 11 and On their hands they will bear you up, so that you will not dash your foot against a stone. 12 Jesus answered him, It is said, Do not put the Lord your God to the test. 13 When the devil had finished every test, he departed from him until an opportune time. 7 Church News NEW ELECTORAL ROLL NOTICE Today is the deadline to enrol on the new Electoral Roll. If you remain uncertain whether you qualify for the Roll or need any assistance in completing it, please speak to Electoral Roll Officer Graeme Calf, the Vicar, or one of the churchwardens after the service. The new roll will be published and come into operation on Saturday, 23 March JUNIOR CHURCH HELP WANTED Junior Church volunteer leaders and helpers are needed. The task is not too onerous, and we do try not to have people on the rota too often. This is an important ministry in our parish life so any help would be appreciated. Please speak to Lillian or JJ if you would like further information LENT COURSE A reminder that our Lent course begins this week: evening course will meet on Tues 12th at 7.45pm, while daytime course will commence on Wed the 13th following the midweek eucharist and soup lunch. Please consult the bulletin board for further details. FORMAL NOTICE OF PCC MEETING Wednesday March 13, 7.45pm This is a formal notice that PCC will meet this Wed, 13 March at 7.45pm in Narthex. This will be the PCC s last regular meeting before the Annual Parochial Church Meeting, which will take place on Sunday, 7 April at 12pm. FUNERAL FOR THEO FADAYOMI Tuesday March 19, 11.30am The funeral of Theo Fadayomi will take place on Tuesday, 19 March at 11.30am at St Mary s. The burial will follow at 2pm. 7

8 INTERACTIONS TALK Tuesday March 19, 7.30pm On Tuesday, 19 March at 7.30pm in the Music Room, Canon Judith Maltby will give the last in our current Interactions series of talks on art and faith. She will speak on Excellent Women: Anglican Women Novelists from Charlotte Bronte to P.D. James. Everyone is very welcome. GOOD FRIDAY PROCESSION Friday April 19 The Churches Together group will once again be organising a Silent Procession of Witness on Good Friday, which this year falls on 19 April. The organisers are looking for volunteers to serve as marshals for the procession. If you are willing to help in this way, please speak to Rose Harley or Moira Hodgson or contact Jane Milligan on or at jane_milligan@btinternet.com. TSM News A big Thank You to the eight members of the congregation who went into TSM School on Wednesday to read to the different classes. This was arranged to mark World Book Day. The visits may have seemed short, but they were much appreciated by the staff and the pupils. We hope to set up more opportunities like this and Marian Shaw would be interested to hear from anyone who would also like to become a Mystery Reader. 8

9 Community News BOX ON THE HIGH ROAD The Box on the High Road will support Water Aid during February. If you would like to nominate a charity for us to support in the future please speak to Diane. BATCA COMMUNITY HEROES AWARDS Several ChTBUT people have been honoured in the past in the BATCA Community Awards (from the Balham and Tooting Community Association), which celebrate outstanding volunteers. A new round of awards is about to be launched. Please think about who you could nominate this year, as it s important to get the story of church volunteers efforts out to a wider public. The awards will be presented at a celebratory evening at a venue in Tooting on Thursday 21 st March open to all.
