ST. MICHAEL LUTHERAN CHURCH 118 State Street Harrisburg, Pennsylvania First Sunday in Lent February 14, :00 a.m. 16

Welcome to St. Michael Church In a world polluted by noise, we should be able to expect the privilege of silence for meditation and preparation as we enter the space set aside for our public worship. In that spirit, we ask you for silence and offer the devotional aids below for your use as you await the start of the service and during the prelude. Prayers Before Worship God of deliverance and freedom, you taught the people of Israel to acknowledge that all things come from your bountiful hand. Deepen our faith so that we may resist temptation and, in the midst of trial, proclaim that Jesus Christ is Lord, now and for ever. Amen blessings you have been given and help provide a special Easter dinner for those who are less fortunate. Shop Price Right on Union Deposit Road or the Aldi Food Stores for better deals. See any member of MTS for questions. Eternal God, we thank you for your assurance that you will hear us when we call on you. Inspire us to turn to you more often. We succumb to temptations that Jesus resisted. Forgive us when we want to be saved only from the consequences of our sins and not from the sins themselves. Amen Worship Notes. These forty days called Lent are like no other. It is our opportune time to return to the God who rescues; to receive the gifts of God s grace; to believe with the heart and confess with the mouth the wonder of God s love in Jesus; and to resist temptation at every turn. This is no small pilgrimage on which we have just embarked. It is a struggle Jesus knew. It is a struggle Jesus shares. The nearness of the Lord, in bread and wine, water and word, will uphold and sustain us. The time immediately before and after the service is being held by our community as a time of silence for prayer and to experience the presence of God. Before the service the time of silent prayer will begin with the ringing of a chapel bell. After the service chapel bell will be rung at the end of the time of silent prayer. You may pray from your seat or at the altar rail; and, you may come and go as you please during this time of prayer. Persons with impairments - St. Michael offers to anyone with a hearing difficulty a small, remote personal speaker. We invite our guests who may need this to ask an usher for one. We welcome any comments concerning St. Michael's efforts to accommodate persons with impairments or disabilities. An enlarged copy of the bulletin is available. Please see an usher if you would like to use one. LENTEN FOOD COLLECTION The season of Lent has begun and with that begins St. Michael's Lenten Food Collection to benefit the Loaves of Love (LOL) ministry. As in past years, cans of pineapple have been requested. Pineapple, a favorite among the guests, is a food item the PA Food Bank does not provide. Our goal is 140, 20 oz. cans of either crushed, chunk or sliced pineapple to be brought to the social hall by Sunday, March 13th with distribution being on Wednesday the 16th. Please consider the many 14 For self-centered living, and for failing to walk with humility and gentleness: Holy God (above) For longing to have what is not ours, and for hearts that are not at rest with ourselves: Holy God For misuse of human relationships, and for unwillingness to see the image of God in others: Holy God For jealousies that divide families and nations, and for rivalries that create strife and warfare: Holy God... For reluctance in sharing the gifts of God, and for carelessness with the fruits of creation: Holy God For hurtful words that condemn, and for angry deeds that harm: Holy God For idleness in witnessing to Jesus Christ, and for squandering the gifts of love and grace: Holy God 3

In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for his sake God forgives us all our sins. Through the Holy Spirit God cleanses us and gives us the power to proclaim the mighty acts of the one who called us out of darkness into his marvelous light. As a called and ordained minister of the church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. 5 COMMUNION SONG COMMUNION HYMN Abide With Me elw 629 SONG AFTER COMMUNION PRAYER OF THE DAY +++WORD+++ FIRST READING Deuteronomy 26: When you have come into the land that the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance to possess, and you possess it, and settle in it, 2 you shall take some of the first of all the fruit of the ground, which you harvest from the land that the Lord your God is giving you, and you shall put it in a basket and go to the place that the Lord your God will choose as a dwelling for his name. 3 You shall go to the priest who is in office at that time, and say to him, Today I declare to the Lord your God that I have come into the land that the Lord swore to our ancestors to give us. 4 When the priest takes the basket from your hand and sets it down before the altar of the Lord your God, 5 you shall make this response before the Lord your God: A wandering Aramean was my ancestor; he went down into Egypt and lived there as an alien, few in number, and there he became a great nation, mighty and populous. 6 When the Egyptians treated us harshly and afflicted us, by imposing hard labor on us, 7 we cried to the Lord, the God of our ancestors; the Lord heard our voice and saw our affliction, our toil, and our oppression. 8 The Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, with a terrifying display of power, and with signs and wonders; 9 and he brought us into this place and gave us this land, a land flowing with milk and honey. 10 So now I bring the first of the fruit of the ground that you, O Lord, have given me. You shall set it down before the Lord your God and bow down before the Lord your God. 11 Then you, together with the Levites and 12 5

the aliens who reside among you, shall celebrate with all the bounty that the Lord your God has given to you and to your house. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. PSALM Psalm 91:1-2, 9-16 wash away our sin, that we may be revived for our journey by the love of Christ. Through him all glory and honor is yours, Almighty Father, with the Holy Spirit, in your holy Church, both now and forever. Amen LORD'S PRAYER Lord remember us in your Kingdom, and teach us to pray. You who dwell in the shelter of the Most High, who abide in the shadow of the Almighty you will say to the Lord, My refuge and my stronghold, my God in whom I put my trust. R Because you have made the Lord your refuge, and the Most High your habitation, no evil will befall you, nor shall affliction come near your dwelling. For God will give the angels charge over you, to guard you in all your ways. Upon their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot a- gainst a stone. R You will tread upon the lion cub and viper; you will trample down the lion and the serpent. I will deliver those who cling to me; I will uphold them, because they know my name. They will call me, and I will answer them; I will be with them in trouble; I will rescue and honor them. With long life will I satisfy them, and show them my salvation. R SECOND READING 6 Romans 10:8b-13 8b The word is near you, on your lips and in your heart (that is, the word of faith that we proclaim); 9 because if you confess with COMMUNION Communion is open to anyone who seeks to respond to Christ's love. To receive communion the assembly approaches the altar rail by the center aisle. The pastor will place the host (bread) in your hand, an assisting minister will have the wine. You may receive the wine either by common cup, or from the pouring chalice. To receive from the pouring chalice take a glass from the tray at the front of the center aisle. After you use the glass you may place it in the tray on the window sill as you return to your seat by the side aisle. 11

PREFACE... we praise your name and join their unending hymn: your lips that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For one believes with the heart and so is justified, and one confesses with the mouth and so is saved. 11 The scripture says, No one who believes in him will be put to shame. 12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; the same Lord is Lord of all and is generous to all who call on him. 13 For, Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Glory and praise is sung by all; the cantor sings the proper verse, after which everyone repeats Glory and praise. One does not live by bread alone,* but by every word that comes from the mouth of God. Holy God, our living Water and our merciful Guide, together with rivers and seas, wells and springs we bless and magnify you. You led your people Israel through the desert, and provided them water from the rock. We praise you for Christ, our Rock and our Water, who joined us in our desert, pouring out his life for the world. In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. Remembering, therefore, his life, death, and resurrection, we await your salvation for all this thirsty world. Pour out your Spirit on this holy food and on all the baptized gathered for this feast: 10 GOSPEL Luke 4:1-13 The holy gospel according to Luke. Glory to you, O Lord. 1 Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness, 2 where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing at all during those days, and when they were over, he was famished. 3 The devil said to him, If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become a loaf of bread. 4 Jesus answered him, It is written, One does not live by bread alone. 5 Then the devil led him up and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. 6 And the devil said to him, To you I will give their glory and all this authority; for it has been given over to me, and I give it to anyone I please. 7 If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours. 8 Jesus answered him, It is written, Worship the Lord your God, and serve only him. 9 Then the devil took him to Jerusalem, and placed him on the pinnacle of the temple, saying to him, If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, 10 for it is written, He will command his angels concerning you, to protect you, 11 and 7

On their hands they will bear you up, so that you will not dash your foot against a stone. 12 Jesus answered him, It is said, Do not put the Lord your God to the test. 13 When the devil had finished every test, he departed from him until an opportune time. OFFERING OFFERTORY The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. SERMON Silence for Meditation. HYMN OF THE DAY O Lord, Throughout These Forty Days elw 319 APOSTLES' CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. OFFERING PRAYER DIALOGUE PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION Lord, in your mercy, / hear our prayer. PEACE The peace of Christ be with you always. / And also with you. The assembly shares the Lord s peace with those nearby. CHOIR ANTHEM +++MEAL
