2 CHURCH OF ST. THERESA, BRONX FROM THE DESK OF FATHER DERIVAN: FIRST HOLY COMMUNION DAY THIS SATURDAY This Saturday, May 5th, will be a beautiful day in the lives of children from our school and our CCD Program as they receive First Holy Communion baptized. It is a day of blessing for their families who have helped them prepare for this, in a real sense, since the day they were baptized. May their First Communion be the beginning of a lifetime of receiving Holy Communion every Sunday at Mass. But First Communion Day is also a day of blessing for our whole parish. My late pastor Monsignor Philip Mulcahy used to say that First Communion Day is the most important day of the year in a parish. How true that is! For whenever a new generation of young Catholics receives Our Lord in Holy communion, we as a parish become stronger. The sacraments are central to our faith and the grace that comes to one person in the sacrament touches all of us. For we are united in Christ. We are His family, His people joined in His grace. We may not know personally the children who will receive First Holy Communion this Saturday. But that does not matter. They are our own, our younger brothers and sisters in Christ. Pray for them that they will stay close to Jesus in Holy Communion. And pray that they will be readyas you areto take their place as active members of our parish, helping to keep St. Theresa Strong. As we see these children receive their First Holy Communion, we should examine our own love for Jesus in this Holy Sacrament. Every time we receive Holy Communion, we should have the same love and devotion as these First Communicants will have on Saturday. We must be careful not to allow receiving Holy Communion to become a routine, something that we automatically do without reflecting on the holy mystery that we are privileged to receive. We are receiving Jesus Himself, the living Jesus, who comes to us to fill us with His grace. Every time you stand on the line to receive Holy Communion, let your attention be focused on Jesus and no one or nothing else. Every time you say Amen when the priest or Eucharistic Minister says The Body of Christ, let your Amen be filled with faith. Your Amen means, Yes, Lord, I do believe this is your Body. Yes, Lord, I do believe that you are here. God bless our First Communion children. Soon they will put aside their First Communion suits and dresses and outgrow them quickly. May they never put aside their love for Jesus. May they never outgrow their desire to receive Holy Communion every Sunday with love and joy. SOME WORDS OF POPE FRANCIS ABOUT FIRST HOLY COMMUNION On December 14, 2014 Pope Francis visited a parish in Rome. On that day he spoke about his First Holy Communion Day. May our children have as much joy in remembering their First Communion Day as Pope Francis has over seventy years later. These are the Pope s words to those First Communion children: Here are those of you who will make their First Communion. You know, this year, I celebrated the 70th anniversary of my First Communion: I received First Communion 70 years ago. It s been a long time. I did it on the 8th of October I remember it as if it was yesterday. I was prepared for a year by a nun who was so good, whose name was Dolores. She taught me the catechism. Then came the big day. At that time, before the Mass, you could not even drink a little water, nothing, not even a drop of water. It was Pius XII who saved us from that! It was good And we all entered the churches with their hands clasped together, thus, and we sang, a song you may know: O holy altar guarded by the angels, I come to you for the first time. I will never forget this day Do not forget your teachers. You know, I have never forgotten them in my life. When the nun who prepared me died on October 17, 1987, I went to see her and I remained beside her remains, and I prayed a lot, because this nun made me know Jesus. Do not forget the teachers. Do not forget the date. And every year, on the anniversary of the date, receive Communion too. MAY CROWNING CEREMONY NEXT SUNDAY: A tradition in the Church has been the crowning of the statue of Our Blessed Mother during May, which (along with October) is Mary s month. We will crown the statue of Our Lady at the 10:30AM Family Mass next Sunday. The children who will receive First Holy Communion on Saturday will especially honor Our Blessed Mother during that Mass. SUPPORT OUR ADVERTISERS: Please support our advertisers; it is their support that makes this bulletin possible, and when you visit them, please let them know that you read their advertisement in St. Theresa s bulletin. ST. JOSEPH THE WORKER MAY 1ST This is St. Joseph s second feast day on the Church calendar of celebrations. We honor him also on March 19th. St. Joseph is a very important saint. He is the husband of Our Lady and the fosterfather of Jesus. Today we celebrate his witness of hard work. He was a carpenter who worked long hours in his little shop. St. Joseph teaches us that the work we do is important. Through it we give our contribution and our service to our family and society. But even more than that. As Christians we realize that our work is like a mirror of ourselves. That is why we want our work to be done with diligence. Many countries set aside one day a year to honor workers. This encourages the dignity and appreciation of work. The Church has given us a wonderful model of work, St. Joseph. In 1955, Pope Pius XII proclaimed this feast of St. Joseph the Worker to be celebrated every year. St. Joseph teaches us that the work we do is very important, because we give our contribution and our service to our family and society.

3 FIFTH SUNDAY IN LENT Prayer For First Communion LORD JESUS, bless all those who are receiving you in Holy Communion for the first time. May each one of them know your love and mercy in a personal way. May all your people open their hearts to you and be transformed by this sacrament. May we become a sign of your love for the whole world. 4 APRIL 29, 2018 OUR FATHER GRAHAM Last Thursday Monsignor Neil Graham went home to the Lord at the age of 83. After his ordination in 1959, Father Graham was sent by Cardinal Spellman to study Spanish in Puerto Rico and that began a lifetime of service to Hispanic people in The Bronx and throughout the Archdiocese. For seventeen years he was pastor of St. John the Evangelist Church in White Plains. After his retirement he came to live at St. Theresa s. After he moved to the O Connor Residence for retired priests, he still came back to St. Theresa s for Mass and just to spend time with priests and staff here. How blessed we were to have him, so much so that the ladies in the rectory affectionately called him our Father Graham. And so he was. He quickly became an integral part of our parish life, particularly serving the Hispanic people at the Spanish Mass on Sundays. But he did much more than that. He was loved by young and old alike. He had the unique ability to relate to older people and younger people alike. Simply put, to know him was to love him, as we all did. Monsignor Graham was here to visit us on the Wednesday before he died. As always, he brought joy to our house. I had the chance to sit down with him for an hour before lunch. As always, his talk was uplifting, talking about his concern for vocations to the priesthood, his great interest in serving the Hispanic people of our Archdiocese (who, he pointed out, constituted half of our Archdiocesan population), and (as always) his love of the Mets! I know I speak with all his brother priests in saying that he was a model to all of us. He always was ready to give good advice to younger priests, encouraging them in their ministry. Father Timothy Wiggins, now the chaplain at Stepinac High School, served with him for ten years at St. John s Church and said this, Father Graham taught me how to be a priest. How true! He taught all of us how to be better priests. But let me add that he taught us all how to be better Catholics, better followers of the Lord Jesus and members of the Church. His faith was real. When you spoke to him, you knew you were speaking to someone who was close to Jesus, someone who had spent his life loving Jesus and serving Him. How blessed we were to have had him, our Father Graham. Last Sunday s gospel was about Jesus, the Good Shepherd. Certainly Monsignor Graham was the good shepherd of so many people during his 59 years of priesthood. May he help us all from his place in heaven. May our Father Graham help us to be as close to Jesus as he was. Father Thomas B. Derivan On Sunday, May 13th the Month s Mind Mass (offered a month after a person s death) will be celebrated for Father Graham at the 1:30PM Spanish Mass. SAINT GIANNA BERETTA MOLLA APRIL 28TH (October 4, 1922 April 28, 1962) In less than 40 years, Gianna Beretta Molla became a pediatric physician, a wife, a mother and a saint! She was born in Magenta near Milano, the 10th of Alberto and Maria Beretta s 13 children. An active member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society and a leader in the Catholic Action movement, Gianna also enjoyed skiing and mountain climbing. She earned degrees in medicine and surgery from the University of Pavia, eventually specializing in pediatrics. In 1952, Gianna opened a clinic in the small town of Mesero, where she met engineer Pietro Molla. Shortly before their 1955 marriage, Gianna wrote to Pietro: Love is the most beautiful sentiment that the Lord has put into the soul of men and women. In the next four years the Mollas had three children: Pierluigi, Mariolina, and Laura. Two pregnancies following ended in miscarriage. Early in her sixth pregnancy, doctors discovered that Gianna had both a child an a tumor in her uterus. She allowed the surgeons to remove the tumor but not to perform the complete hysterectomy that they recommended, which would have killed the child. Seven months later in April 1962, Gianna Emanuela Molla was born at the hospital in Monza, but postoperative complications resulted in an infection for her mother. The following week, Gianna Molla died at home in Mesero, where she was buried. Gianna Emanuela went on to become a physician herself. Gianna Beretta Molla was beatified in 1994 and canonized 10 years later. With great faith and courage, Gianna Molla made the choice that enabled her daughter to be born. We can often wish that we were in different circumstances, but holiness frequently comes from making difficult choices in bad situations.

JOSEPH IN TODAY S YOUTH In his homily for a Mass this past year, Pope Francis spoke of St. Joseph, the patron saint of the universal church, and the earthly father of Jesus as a dreamer capable of accepting the task given to him by God. The Pope likened him to today s teenagers, saying they too are dreamers. Joseph, as we remember, through a dream accepted God s promise and carried it forward with silence and strength and made sure God s will was done. Today s teens have a hard time listening to their dreams or even having time to dream. Many belong to every club, play every sport they have an extreme view of their lives. Their dreams are those of failure sometimes or disappointment. The Pope is encouraging today s teens to never lose the ability to dream and take risks that will improve or change the course of their station. He is encouraging them to not be afraid of the more difficult road that lies ahead, for God is with them. In his homily the Pope described Joseph as a man who doesn t speak but obeys, a man of tenderness, a man capable of fulfilling his promises so that they become solid, secure. Sometimes the star quarterback dreams of writing the great American novel or volunteering weekends at the homeless shelter but practice and games preclude that. Teenagers these days are told not to dream. They need to prepare for a life of work, a successful career in a hard charging world. They need to keep up with technology, friends and new ideas. But they are not given the time to find the peace they may need to be truly fulfilled later in life, when some of those successes find their way into their lives. Teens should be encouraged to find a balance, just like adults, in their lives to welcome spiritual growth, not just physical or academic. So often once they are confirmed, students begin to fall away from church, they stop going to CCD or even Mass. They feel they have graduated. This means the emphasis on their spiritual growth may be halted but this is exactly the time to dig in and really get to know Christ and his plans for you. Let s pray for today s teens and hope they heed the Pope s call to follow their dreams straight into the loving arms of our Lord and Savior. CARDINAL S APPEAL INFORMATION Many parishioners have asked about this year s Cardinal s Appeal. This year the Cardinal s Appeal will be part of a capitalneeds program sponsored by the Archdiocese called Renew and Rebuild. Several other parishes have already engaged in this program. For our parish it will begin later on in the year. You will be receiving more information about this as it is made available to us.
