2 Happy Valentine s Day, Saint Valentine was a priest in Rome who ministered to Christians. He was martyred and buried at a Christian Cemetery on the Via Flaminia close to the Ponte Milvio to the north of Rome, on February 14, which has been observed as the Feast of Saint Valentine. Just like Saint Valentine, we are called to be disciples of Jesus and minister to our friends and family, by sharing our love and compassion with them. It s amazing what a hug or hand shake can do to a person who feels very alone sometimes. It s amazing by just asking someone a question, Are you okay? could maybe save their life as we don t know what state of mind they are in. At last week s Family Night, it was my honor to bring in a very close friend of mine, Don Grundy. Don was the Suicide Prevention Coordinator for the National Guard. He taught many leaders and young Soldiers how to be a real friend and ask such difficult questions of those who may be in need and were thinking of committing suicide. As he presented in our gym, he expressed to our students and families the importance of asking the direct question, Are you thinking of ending your life? And your role if someone should say yes. They were taught the ACE program: ASK, CARE, and Escort your friend in trouble. He also expressed to students and families the importance of God in their life especially during difficult times. I want to thank the Religious Education families that came to Family Night and listened to Don s story and engaged in the conversation. I believe that it s important we bring up real life situations to our families to better educate them. I feel God gave me such a great opportunity to share all the life lessons the Army gave me, so I can in turn educate my fellow parishioners. I bring this up to you as parish members because we need to look at our friends and neighbors in the parish and outside. Winter time has the highest rate of suicide. People may not be able to make it to Mass due to weather. The snowstorms make for long gloomy days especially for our home bound parishioners and widows/ers. Please don t hesitate to reach out especially in this long winter season. Valentine s Day is not just about a box of chocolates but reaching out to those you care for and love. Please share your address with the parish secretary at lmathieu@sacredheartshawano.org for a copy of the scholarship application. The scholarship application and pastoral recommendation must be received by the diocese no later than March 1. The total amount of the scholarship will be based upon the amount of monies collected during offertory at the Rural Life Mass held on April 2 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shawano and on April 4 at St. Louis Catholic Parish in Dykesville. Last year the amount was in the $1,000 range. Graduating seniors -- please consider filling out the application- three short answer and a listing of your volunteer service to your parish.
