The Knights of Columbus Chicken Dinner at the Charleston Board of Trade was cancelled due to lack of Presale tickets. 3 My fiancée and I are planning our wedding for next year. We still have to attend classes and meet with a priest. What should we expect from the classes? Does the priest test us to see if we are ready to be married? For many years the church has tried to help couples prepare for marriage. The rising divorce rate, as well as the recognition of marriage as a sacrament, led to the development of Marriage Prep Dialogues and Engaged Encounter Weekends. Both programs are designed to encourage couples to discuss the basic fundamentals of relationship within the context of marriage: communication, finance, sexuality, spirituality and values and goals. Open and honest dialogue, as well as a sense of shared values, can make a big difference in a marriage. The classes are not a "how to" course, but provide information and encouragement as you discuss how you will live your married life. The married sponsor couples in these programs often share their own experience and information as a guide and example. The priest may give some spiritual insights on how living the sacrament of marriage differs from the legal understanding of marriage. He is not there to test you, but rather to help you cover all the bases and be certain that you and your future spouse are well-informed and prepared to take on the responsibilities and commitment of marriage. The goal of marriage is union and love. Openness, honesty, trust, and love are the glue that keeps couples together for a lifetime. Dan Dorau, the Parochial Vicar at Divine Mercy Parish in Burlington, will give a presentation titled, "How can I be a priest having been married?" Fr. Dan grew up in northwest Iowa before going to Loras College in Dubuque, where he met and later married his wife. After an advanced degree, he worked in information technology and banking while raising four children. After 25 years the marriage ended in divorce and eight years later he entered the seminary for the Davenport Diocese. He was ordained to the priesthood in May of 2017 and served one year in Davenport before being assigned to Divine Mercy in Burlington and West Burlington. His talk will center on the Church's teaching about the Sacrament of Marriage, the annulment process, and his personal story with a Q & A period. Mass is at 5:30pm with a presentation immediately following at 6:30pm. All are welcome to attend.
