2 Dear Parishioners, Pastor s Pen By Fr. Tom Farrell I want to address in this article the importance of helping family members receive the Sacrament of the Anointing of the sick during their times of illness. The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is administered to give spiritual comfort to the sick and dying, to bring remission of sins, and to make known to the infirmed the Church's concern and prayers for them. The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick gives grace for the state into which people enter through sickness. Through the Sacrament, the Holy Spirit is given and renews ones confidence and faith in God and strengthens them against temptation to discouragement, despair, and anguish during ones struggle with death. It prevents the believer from losing hope in God's justice and mercy. One of the effects of the Sacrament is to absolve the recipient of any sins not previously absolved through the Sacrament of Penance. The Sacrament unites the sick person to the passion of Christ for his good and the good of the Church. It strengthens the person and gives them peace and courage to endure one's suffering, one s illness, or one s old age. It assists towards the restoration of health and it prepares the person from the passing from death to eternal life. Know the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick can ONLY be given while one is alive as is the case for any Sacrament, therefore one should not wait until a person s last hours before summoning a priest to receive the grace of this sacrament. Therefore, upon learning of an upcoming surgery or any illness, PLEASE summon a priest so your loved one can be given the opportunity to receive the graces of this very important Sacrament for both one s healing of the body and soul. VINCENT de PAUL COLLECTION There will be a second collection this weekend for our St. Vincent de Paul Society. Please be as generous as possible in your donation which will be used to help the less fortunate in our community this holiday season. Thank you, St. Vincent de Paul Society Sacred Heart Statue The Sacred Heart statue that is on display in the front of church was in the fire on November 27, The money for the restoration of the statue was given by an anonymous donor. Dominican Republic Mission Trip Collection The reason for the collection (which will be held next weekend) is to help offset costs associated with the Mission Trip of eight Deacons from the Green Bay Diocese. The cost to build one of the chapels is $15,000 and we are each asked to try to raise at least $2,000. This Mission of St. Therese Parish in Elias Pina, Dominican Republic has been a Diocese of Green Bay Mission for the past 50 years. Over the last ten years, a group of Deacons have been rebuilding/ building chapels in the countryside in some of the poorest villages near the border of Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Father Mike Seis, from Antigo has been the Pastor there for the past 25 years. Last year Bishop Ricken joined us for the first week and was on the job site laying concrete blocks in 90 degree heat. Please help support this Mission and my ability to serve the Lord's people. I will preach about the Mission trip and how we are all called to be Disciples on the Way and I will have a slide show in the Gathering Space after each Mass this weekend. 4 Please help us with Sacred Heart s Christmas Parade float. The parade s theme this year is Making the Season Bright, and our Sacred Heart float title is Sharing Jesus Light to Make the Season Bright! This will demonstrate how we each are given a special Light through Jesus and as Christians we want to share that Light with others, especially this time of the year. School classrooms are preparing materials for our float, and students will be making their own stars to pass out to parade goers in an effort to Share the Light of Jesus. Our athletes and cheerleaders are also joining us and they will lead our float and carry our banners. Our prayer is that parishioners and RE families will join us and represent Sacred Heart s many ministries. Please confirm with Autumne Gee at agee@sacredheartshawano.org if you are walking/riding in our float this year. Last year we had around 70 participants, and we are hoping to top that this year. The parade takes place on Friday, December 1 at 6:00pm. We ask any one who is going to walk/ride with us to please meet us at the float lineup location on Elizabeth Street (please enter off Lincoln) by 5:45pm. Look for the float (truck & trailer) with the large glittery gold star, and our round school/parish logo all lit up! Please help us to share Jesus Light through your participation in this year s float! Job Posting Youth Minister We are looking for a full-time Youth Minister with Benefits. You need to be of the Catholic faith, organized, self-motivated, and enjoy working with students. Maintain a well-planned, carefully balanced program throughout the year coordinated with the church calendar of events. Assure responsibilities for events (off site retreats, and weekend youth events). Pre-schedule all activities in their entirety, including post-activity plans. Publish same to staff, parents, and youth in a timely fashion. Provide information and encourage attendance to summer camps and assist in the fundraising for students to be able to attend. We need to bring fun and exciting energy into our youth program. If you love to plan events, work one on one with students, this position is for you.
