2 Hello I m Todd Raether, and by the grace of God I will soon be ordained as Deacon for the Church. This is the third part in a series explaining the role of deacon in practice. This week I ll explain about service at the liturgy. You may recall in the first part of this series the Order of Deacons began when the Greek speaking Jews of the early church were complaining that their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution of communion. Seven men were chosen to assist with this task. This practice has evolved through the ages. During the Liturgy of Eucharist you may notice that the deacon has become the minister of the Chalice by preparing it for the priest, and paying attention to the pall that is placed on top during the Eucharistic Prayer. The priest will also hand it to him for the elevation during the Doxology (the Great Amen). The Deacon is then to bring the Cup to the people during Holy Communion. Then getting back to the root of it all, he is to bring communion to those who cannot make it to the celebration of the Mass. We understand this to mean those who are homebound, in nursing homes and hospitals, or in jail. The Deacon is also to facilitate the directions of the Mass so that the priest may fully concentrate on offering his prayer and the prayers of the people to God. Here you will see the Deacon offer the Penitential Rite (Lord have mercy), the direction to share a sign of peace, the purification of the sacred vessels after communion, directions to bow for blessings, and the dismissal at the end of the Mass. Next week I ll explain the role of service of charity and justice. My ordination is set for May 12 at the Cathedral in Green Bay. Everyone is welcome to attend. Please help support our graduating 8th graders as they plan their trip. SAM 25 SAM 25 is closing for the summer on May 1. The residents do not have places to stay. We are looking for tents, sleeping bags, bikes, and $10 gas cards to help them out.
