Then will the eyes of the blind be opened, the ears of the deaf be cleared; then the tongue of the mute will sing! Is. 35:4-6 Jesus put his finger into the man s ears and spitting, touched his tongue; then he looked up to heaven and groaned and said to him, Ephphatha! -- that is, Be opened! - And immediately the man s ears were opened, his speech impediment was removed, and he spoke plainly. Mk. 7:33-34 At least two things are clearly happening in today s readings. First, Jesus is healing a person in need. As always, Jesus is on the side of mercy. A man who is hurting, unable to communicate, and isolated from the community is brought to Jesus who is moved by mercy to heal the man. Jesus cares about the individual person. He wants each person to be whole and healthy and to fulfill the potential God has given them. Jesus can and does heal the one who is hurting. But beyond that, Jesus is acting as God s prophet. This is the second thing going on in the reading today. By healing the man from his deafness, he is revealing God s kingdom. Jesus is fulfilling the prophecy from Isaiah, the ears of the deaf will be cleared. By His actions, Jesus is making it clear that God s reign has begun. His power to heal reveals God s kingdom. The same dynamic is present in our lives. Any time we bring healing to someone we are demonstrating God s love and concern for the individual. But it is also bigger than that! Whenever we are a healing presence in a person s life, we make God s reign present. Just like Jesus, we help to reveal God s kingdom through our acts of mercy. When you were baptized, you were anointed with chrism oil and the priest or deacon said, As Christ was anointed priest, prophet, and king,so may you live always as a member of His body, sharing everlasting life. Each time you offer a healing presence to someone in need you are living your baptism and being the priest, prophet, and king that you are called to be. Peace, Dcn. Lincoln A. Join Pope Francis' during September to pray for: the Young People in Africa. Please pray that young people in Africa may have access to education and work in their own countries Households of Discipleship Challenge - From Mary we learn to surrender to God s Will in all things. From Mary we learn to trust even when all hope seems gone. From Mary we learn to love Christ her Son and the Son of God! ~St. John Paul II We start a new month, a new school year, and for many there are other life chances happening. September 8th we celebrate the Blessed Mother Mary s birthday. As St. John Paul II tells us she has much to teach us through the transitions in life, the joys and all events that come our way. This week celebrate the Virgin Mary s birthday. Have a cake, sing a song, thank her for her surrender, for her example, for her loving protection. 5 SSRM SCHOOL NEWS It has been a wonderful first week of school! We are blessed to have Mrs Sprangers teach us music and Mr Van Daalwyk teach us physical education. This week we are going to enjoy art class with Mr Smith. He has joined the staff as an art teacher, coming every Wednesday. Be sure to keep an eye on this section of the bulletin to find out all the latest events of the school. 3/4 enjoying phy ed class I m borrowing this idea I LOVE this concept! Remember in school how exciting it was to get the book order form and search through it looking for books!. It is one of my favorite memories! As a school, our teachers receive the Scholastic Book Club fliers monthly to send home with the children to share with their families and purchase books if they'd like. Sadly, times are changing and many families are unable to purchase books to have at home. How AWESOME would it be if ALL of our students could receive one free book every month?! 1/2 playing Fill the Cup math game Here s the idea I d like to try out this year: Scholastic has books every month that are $1. We would LOVE for each of the students to be able to bring home one new book each month during the school year from September to May. If I select the $1 books, that s only $9 per child. Would anyone be interested in sponsoring a child in our School? If you re interested in helping out with this project, let me know! We currently have 40 students in our school this year that we would like to get a sponsors for. 7/8 enjoying a getting to know you activity We would LOVE to see the smiles on their faces each month when they get a new book. It truly is the best gift! You could mail a check or drop off at school for $9 made out to Scholastic Book Club and a child would get a new book to take home each month!
