Congregation A Assisting Minister Pastor Today s Theme We continue a four week sermon series based on passages from the Letter of James. The letter was late in acceptance into the canon of Scripture. Luther viewed it as the straw epistle that seemed more about works than faith. As we explore this book, we hear words to those who live out of the Old Testament and into a world filled with religion. Our question is: What is true religion? 1

2 GOSPEL Luke 16:10-13 For the Word of God in Scripture, for the Word of God among us, for the Word of God within us: Thanks be to God. SERMON What is True Religion? Pastor McEachran Where There is Faith Active in Love in Life. HYMN OF THE DAY That Priceless Grace ELW Hymn 591 APOSTLES CREED A We confess our faith in the words of the Apostles Creed. I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. THE PRAYERS A God, our trust is in you. Hear our prayer. THE PEACE The peace of the Lord be with you always. And also with you. (shared in community) OFFERING I. Shall We Gather at the River [arr. 5 PASTOR MCEACHRAN: Today, September 18, marks the 33rd anniversary of the installation of Pastor McEachran as Senior Pastor of Saint Andrew s. Our congregation and the community are thankful for his ministry and leadership! SERMON SERIES with Pastor McEachran What is True Religion? Four Sundays of Sermons from the Letter of James In a time when the Gospel was rooting in the world, the question was What is true religion? And is Christianity just one more religion? Or, is it the way into the truth that is life? September 4 Patience in Life James 1:1-18 September 11 Impartiality in Life James 2:1-13 September 18 Faith Active in Love James 2:14-26 and James 3:13-17 September 25 A Disciple s Way James 5:7-20 The letter may have been written by James, the brother of Jesus. It was often disputed as a book worthy of the canon, to be accepted into the Scripture, but the witness of the early Christian writers quotes it often as an antidote to those who might say they have faith but fail to reach out with works of loving service. W E L C O M E TODAY AT SAINT ANDREW S HEALING PRAYERS are offered during the distribution of Holy Communion. Kneelers are provided on the east and west sides of the sanctuary. Trained healing ministers are waiting to receive your requests before or after receiving the Eucharist. It can be especially meaningful to have a laying on of hands and an anointing of oil, if desired. It is appropriate to bring ANY request or concern that you may have for yourself or someone else. These may be prayers for emotional, spiritual, or physical healing. It can be a peace that brings wholeness, according to God s will, in a number of ways. If you are unable to walk to the kneelers, please ask an usher to assist or move to the bottom of the stairs on the East side of the sanctuary (near the pulpit) and the Healing Minister will come to you. WORSHIP SERVICE CAPTIONING: Please note that there is no worship service captioning this Sunday. Our next captioned service is next Sunday, September 25, at 11:00 am. BOOKS AVAILABLE: The Fall Session of W.E.B.S. (Women s Evening Book Study) will begin October 5. Their first book for discussion is Jonah, What s Your Whale? by Marvin Kananen. Copies of the book will be available for purchase today, September 18, between services in the Narthex. The price is less than $10 and you can get a signed copy from Marvin Kananen. Proceeds will go to OBA (Operation Bootstrap Africa). NEXT SUNDAY AT SAINT ANDREW S WORSHIP SERVICE CAPTIONING: Next Sunday, real-time captioning of the 11:00 am worship service is available, making our worship service accessible to those who are hard-of-hearing or cannot be at church. You can use your smartphone, PC, or tablet to access the captioning (the sanctuary has a WiFi connection.) Go to: (If you see a login page, the captioning is not yet active. Refresh your browser near the beginning of the worship service.) The website displays real-time captions of what is being spoken in the service, similar to closed captioning on television. 5
