Growing Forward...One in Christ --- Along the Way t s all about your attitude. A phrase I hear often in these times. What it seems to mean Iis how you see, what you experience, and how you context life as important for all people. My phrase is All will be well and I have come to believe that in each new day. Fall unfolds in ways that are spectacular. Just the colors creation paints for us are a reminder the seasons come and the seasons go to remind us that time is important. And if we don t see it, the retailer will make sure that the big three holidays are afoot---halloween-thanksgiving- Christmas. How many shopping days? I am mindful that Advent is on the way, those four weeks of preparing to celebrate anew the coming of Jesus, the Word made flesh. (John 1:14) Often it has been kept as Little Lent and a theme of repentance carries us into hymns that are in a minor key and just the hint that we need to be really engaged in a reminder that Jesus would not have been born if it had not been for the happy sin of Adam. Let s change the last quarter of 2018 with notes of gratitude and joy. A sense that God is working well in our lives, in your congregation, and in the communities that support us on our life journey as disciples of Jesus. It is a time to revel and rejoice in the gift of the relationships we share. Over 36 years for us and on the cusp of the new year we will remember a bit but mostly give thanks and look to the horizon of new time for you, for me, and for the faith community we love. There will be time to bring us to into celebration of our life together, but for the time being, we continue to do what we do so well in this place. To be about the work of the Lord, to be bold in witness and mutual regard as we show the world around us what it means to be in Jesus. Confident that the greatest gift of the Holy Spirit is what Holden Village used to call holy hilarity. Let us move along the way with smiles for the good and gracious promise that God is within us as we manage all of God s good gifts. See you in church! Welcome and Worship with Children There are a variety of resources to welcome children in worship. Children may borrow Spark Bibles (available in the Narthex) during worship to follow along with the lessons and parts of worship. Timber Ridge Worship Gatherings Several members of Saint Andrew s and Our Savior Lutheran Church in Issaquah live at Timber Ridge in Issaquah. Pastor McEachran and Pastor Wes Telyea from Our Savior lead worship gatherings at Timber Ridge on the third Wednesday of the month, at 1:00 pm in Multi-Purpose Room A. Our next worship gathering is November 21. All are invited (members and friends - whether you live at Timber Ridge or not!). Inquire at the front desk to Timber Ridge when you arrive and they will direct you to the room location. Communion Bread - Bakers Needed! Help is needed to bake Communion bread. This quite easy and important ministry needs you and your family to give an hour to baking bread which feeds our faith family every Sunday at the altar. There are two ways to help: You can sign up for a specific Sunday to bring bread. The link to the signup can be found on the Saint Andrew s website: Scroll to Bake Communion Bread. The bread freezes well, so you can also bake when it is convenient for you, without signing up for a specific day. The bread can be baked anytime, sealed in zip lock bag with the date it was baked on the label, and placed in the container marked Altar Guild Bread in the freezer in the Scullery at church. We use the Luther Bread recipe, found at (scroll to Bake Communion Bread ). Are you able to help? Contact coordinator Jill Nichols- Hicks for more information. 2 - Saint Andrew s Lutheran Church, Bellevue WA November 2018

This concert brings you old favorites as well as fresh takes on holiday classics, and will leave you with dreams of the sugar plum fairy dancing through your head!! Property Ponderings Emergency Drill on October 21 The church will be exercising an emergency drill during the Discipleship Hour on Sunday, October 21. This year, the practiced action will be a police response. Real world scenarios that could initiate a police response at Saint Andrew s could be something as simple as someone yelling or becoming belligerent to a more violent type of event. Anytime that a police response is appropriate, anyone can push one of the blue Police buttons located at exit doors throughout our building. This will sound the police siren alarms throughout the building, call 911 for a police response, lockdown the exterior doors, and send text messages to teachers and staff. If you hear the siren alarm in the building, you should take one of these three actions, in preference order: a) RUN If you can safely run away from the event, that should be your first priority. From Saint Andrew s, run to the Mormon Temple parking lot. b) HIDE If you don t know where the event is, or cannot safely run in the opposite direction, you should hide in your current location. Lock the doors to the room, close the blinds and shades, turn off the lights, and be silent. There are room-specific protocols to effectively Hide in every room; they are on the back of the Evacuation Map. c) FIGHT Only as a last resort, if you cannot Run or Hide, should you engage the attacker. Disrupt the attacker by throwing books, chairs, or anything available to you. The best short video demonstrating these actions is at: A more appropriate video for children is at: If you have questions, please contact Facilities Manager Kurt Lutterman, kurt@salchome.org or Worship and Liturgical Arts Children s Choir Calling all students in kindergarten through middle school! You are invited to join us for Children s Choir as we prepare to sing as part of worship and the Children s Christmas Program on Sunday, December 23, at one 9:30 am worship service. This is a great opportunity for you to be a very important part of our worship service that day. Plan to join us; we need your voice! Rehearsals will be on Sundays, November 25, December 2, December 9, and December 16, from 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm, in 215/Music Room. Contact Children s Choir Director Erin Simpson for more information or to let her know of your interest. Thank You Dear Saint Andrew s community, wanted to take the time to thank each of you who I contributed to Sara s and my baby shower gift individually, but I will settle for an opportunity for a broader thank you. As I said at the shower, the love and concern you have shown for us is a reflection of Christ in our lives, and it is exactly what being a part of a Christian community is about. We are truly humbled and grateful for each of your contributions to our gift and the shower. Please know the impact that the gift, and all of you, make in our lives during this time of anticipation and transition. If this new child is welcomed and received in even a fraction of the same way I have been welcomed into this congregation, it will be an immense gift to him/her. With a full heart, Pastor Drew Thank you to everyone who has sent cards and prayers, to Pastor for his visits, and to the KnitWits for the comforting prayer shawls. We feel very cared for and are truly blessed. Sam and Shanthi Gunasekaran W e would like to express our thanks for all the cards, thoughts and prayers our family received concerning the death of our sister Marion. She was a sister in Christ as well; an early model for my own faith and service in God s family. Jean Wahlstrom and extended family November 2018 Saint Andrew s Lutheran Church, Bellevue WA - 3

4 Discipleship Ministries. The vision of Discipleship Ministries is To gather, encourage and equip all people through active learning, how to embody faith in Jesus as they are sent into the world. Do ONE Thing To grow faith in the youth of Saint Andrew s Every time a child is baptized at Saint Andrew s, we make a promise to that child. We promise to support and pray for the child in his/her new life in Christ and to help sponsors and parents in bringing that child to faith. And here is your chance to live out the promises you have already made by doing ONE thing to help the discipleship ministry of this congregation. On Sunday, November 18, you ll have the chance to add your name to the Do One Thing list. And whenever we are in need of a caring adult to fill in for a one-time role, you might get called in to save the day! For most youth events, all we need is an extra body in the room. Some things you might get called for include: Going with youth on a service outing Assisting with the annual Christmas program Working in the kitchen for a potluck meal Helping out at Vacation Bible School for a day Gathering supplies for a children s event Filling in for a week as an Affirmation of Baptism/Confirmation (ABC) mentor Attending a youth s sporting event/concert at school Helping set up for a mission trip fundraiser And if we call and you say, Yes! then you have done your one thing and won t be called again (unless you want to be). This is a way for the entire congregation- whether you have kids in the program or not- to be involved in the faith formation of our youth. I hope everyone will consider how much playing a small part in the discipleship ministry can impact the faith of our youngest generations for years to come. If you want to get a head start on the list, you can go ahead and contact me with your name and updated contact information and your name will be added! Pastor Drew Yoos, Interim Director of Discipleship Ministries drew@salchome.org or Tuesday Morning Bible Study Every Tuesday, 10:00 am 11:00 am, 322/Conference Room Presenter: Pastor James McEachran We have begun a new series: Witness to New Life in Christ --- Paul s Letter to the Romans. Paul had a new vision for his mission, to travel to Spain in a missionary journey for the Lord. It may have been that his mission support came from the house churches in Rome. The Letter to the Romans was his witness to what new life in Christ really meant. We began a 10-week study on October 9. This time will mark a study which will mark for each of us a path of witness and service as ambassadors for Christ in the world. Here is the challenge, the opportunity. Invite a friend or two, bring your favorite translation. 8 .... on Remembering II Reflections.... by Lowell Arneson One year ago, at this time, we used this space to think about remembering and the joy and pain that may come with it. Memory is a subject talked about a lot these days. As life expectancies have increased a good thing we have seen significant increases in dementia and other memory related problems, which is not so good. Age is certainly not the only cause of memory loss, and not all older people suffer from it. My own mother-in-law died at age 97, clear as a bell and still very sharp mentally. Taking another look at remembering, let s consider our memories, since after all, the things that we remember, are collectively our memories. Some are more precious than others. An example might be our memories of our parents. We seem to have a special sadness for the loss of a parent. I think a part of that comes from the fact that no one knows us like our parents knew us. They remember the day we came home from the hospital, when we took our first steps, the first day that we went to school, the day we went to join the Navy, and the day we came home. Our life, up until they died, was one of their fondest memories. Nostalgia is a fancy word for homesickness, a feeling of wishing fruitlessly that you could go back to a time long ago. There is a little more to the meaning of nostalgia, however. For many years, the field of psychology considered nostalgia to be a minor mental illness. One dictionary describes nostalgia as a wistful or excessively sentimental, sometimes abnormal, yearning for a return to, or of some past period. This, it was believed, usually resulted in negative thoughts, discouragement, or depression. However, this thinking has been almost totally reversed over the past five years, based on two scientific studies involving more than 5,000 people, that has shown that remembering the past (nostalgia) is typically positive and pleasant. I have many memories from long ago when I was a young boy. Although I had a very happy childhood, there are few instances that I would choose to return to. A memory that I return to quite often is how our family community really - treated the Sabbath. At the end of Saturday afternoon, the farm machinery would be parked, and the tractor engines shut down until Monday morning, even during the height of haying or harvesting seasons. Chores were done early, weekly baths were drawn, and the family prepared to go to town. The stores and cafes stayed open until 10 PM on Saturday night. Our first stop was at the creamery with our accumulated cream from the week. We would later pick up our cream check which would usually cover the cost of the groceries we were buying. Main street would fill up with parked cars early, so finding a parking spot was a challenge. Dad would buy the groceries, and mother and her sister would often sit in our car and visit. My sisters were young and would often fall asleep in the back seat. That left me free to roam the stores and streets. I loved it and I took it all in. Sunday mornings were all about Sunday School and church. Stores, gas stations and cafes were closed for the day. The café in the hotel and one gas station - there were four that took turns being open on Sunday would stay open, just in case. After Sunday dinner (noon meal), we were usually cut loose to play or do whatever we could dream up. Sometimes we would go back to town to watch the baseball game or visit relatives, or pick wild blueberries whatever the day called for. These were times I don t long to return to, but would I love to instill some of that Sabbath discipline in our society today? Just a little bit wouldn t hurt. 9 Managing God s Gifts As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God s varied grace. 1 Peter 4:10 English Standard Version Stewardship is management. As disciples of Jesus, we are about the work of managing God s gifts to us. It is a celebration of God s blessings, recognizing God as the creator and giver of all that we have and are, and then serving Him as managers of his gifts through our time, energy, monies, and voice. Look to a series of bulletin inserts over the next few weeks that illustrate our life together through stories, opportunities, and impact points we make with our gifts. October 14: Physical Church/Space October 21: Worship and Discipleship October 28: Fellowship in Community November 4: Outreach and Servant Ministries November 11: Finance/Stewardship November 18: Time/Energy/Monies/Voice A mailing will arrive in the next weeks including a 2019 commitment/pledge card and information about the various methods available for financial giving to Saint Andrew s. Commitment Sunday is November 18. We will worship together at one 9:30 am service. You are invited to return your 2019 commitment card to the offering plate that morning as an act of worship to God who provides for our every need. Following worship we will gather for a commitment celebration...a time to celebrate and give thanks for what we have, what we ve been able to do, and to look forward to the future. Saint Andrew s Vision Initiative Initiatives The Vision Initiative is an engagement in a visioning process for our congregation. This was identified in 2017 as a Waypoint recommendation by the Joshua Process and initiated by the Congregation Council in early It is a process that will help us, by listening to the Holy Spirit s leading, shape the future of our congregational ministry and seek the way God would have Saint Andrew s go and grow. In October: On Sunday, October 7, during the adult discipleship hour, the Vision Initiative Team shared results from the first two workshops with the congregation. From the first workshop on uniqueness, a draft statement was created that describes how the unique situation, potential and passions of Saint Andrew s can be used to have the greatest meaningful impact to the community around us. From the second workshop on mission, a draft mission statement was developed. These statements were presented and discussed. Many good thoughts and ideas were shared. On Sunday, October 14, workshop #3 on Values (Why we do what we do) was held after the 11:00 service. During that workshop there was a lot of enthusiastic discussion and many great ideas were shared and collected by the Vision Initiative Team. Throughout the month, the Vision Initiative Team first worked on preparing for workshop #3 and then worked on synthesizing the ideas from that workshop into clear values statements. In November: The Vision Initiative Team will continue working with the ideas from the Values workshop and preparing values statements. On Sunday, November 11, during the adult discipleship hour at 9:45 am, the Vision Initiative Team will present results from the third workshop on Values. At that time, they will share draft Values statements developed from the ideas the congregation provided at the Values workshop. Coming Up: For the Sunday Church School, Affirmation of Baptism/Confirmation, and High School staff, who couldn t attend the adult discipleship sessions, we are scheduling a time to discuss the results of the workshops and get their ideas and comments. We are also scheduling a meeting with youth to discuss mission and values. A final version of the mission statement and the values statements will be presented to the congregation at the annual meeting in January. Contact Dick Szabo for more information. 10 What s Ahead Congregation Council by Scott Lester, Congregation Council President Here are a few notes and thoughts on what s ahead. Pathways Hub The Council is forming a group that will be updating the communication in the Pathways Hub to promote a broader mix of committee activities and church initiatives inclusive of a more comprehensive ministry timeline that celebrates our life as a congregation in Christ. Volunteering and Engagement Commitment Sunday is November 18 and we couldn t be more proud of how well Saint Andrew s is doing financially this year. We re prayerful that we continue to remain stable and generous. At this point, however, nearly every committee is voicing the need and invitation for additional volunteers, members and teachers. Please consider where you are feeling called to engage and participate in active mission and ministry. Annual Planning September and October initiated two important annual activities. The nominating committee was activated to start the process of selecting candidates for the open Council positions at the January 27 Annual Meeting. Hal Ferris has been elected the chair of that committee; please contact him if you would be interested in serving on Congregation Council budget planning is underway, and includes two Discipleship Hour presentations for budget discussion in January (January 13 and 20). Linking Everything Together In January, the two Way Points initiatives (Leadership and Vision) that Council has been concurrently coordinating will converge. We re infinitely thankful for everyone who has participated along the way. Between teams, forums and workshops, there has been a great deal of engagement from dozens of congregation members. Men s Retreat M en: Plan to join us for our Men s Retreat on Friday- Saturday, October 26-27, at Valley Camp in North Bend. Our facilitator for the weekend is Pastor Timothy Weber, who will speak on the theme Enriching Life by Embracing Our Dying: The Proper Use of Death Bed Regrets. A description... Psalm 90 admonishes to do the unnatural: Teach us to number our days that we might apply our hearts unto wisdom. We do everything to avoid the reality of our dying as Ernst Becker underscored in his prize winning book, THE DENIAL OF DEATH. It is unnatural, maybe even frightening, for us to look at our dying boldly in the face with the prayer: teach me to learn from my dying how I might live with greater abundance. For this task we need the power of the Spirit, courage to face the conversation, and partners in our faith community who might help us. The promise of Christ is that the abundant life awaits us even more than we would ever think. But, this also requires a suffering under the cross which, in this case, is suffering our suffering of dying and learning what we can, and making new and fresh decisions about living with our numbered days. Brochures with registration forms are in the Narthex or online at men.salchome.org. Contact Dick Swaisgood for more information. 15 Our Core Ministries... Core Outreach Ministries of Saint Andrew s are specific areas of ministry which congregation members are most involved in with various resources, including time, expertise, and financial resources. Our Core Outreach Ministries fall into five categories: ~ Affordable Housing/Homelessness ~ Hunger ~ Christian Education non-profits ~ Local Ministries ~ Global Missions The members of the Outreach and Servant Ministries Committee are: Joyce Arnold, Marshall Erling (Council Liaison), Dave Marcrander, Pastor McEachran, George Miller, Becca Piel, Debbie Szabo, Dick Szabo, Ann Thorpe, Marlyn Thorpe (Chair), and Jean Wahlstrom. Ministry Prayer Focus Outreach and Servant Ministries Each month, as a congregation, we pray for one of the ministries we support and partner with, in the world and in our community. In November, we ll pray for Bridge Disability Ministries, an organization that honors the God-given dignity and giftedness of people with disabilities. They build relationships to alleviate isolation through gatherings which connect individuals in group settings and retreats. Bridge also offers mobility equipment and guardianship services. Saint Andrew s supports Bridge Disability Ministries with Christmas gifts as part of our Love Tree outreach and with a Sunday Celebration Dinner in the spring (May 5, 2019). Bihar, India Project Bihar/Lutheran World Relief Bihar is a global mission which is engaging us in significant, multi-year outreach in Northeastern India as part of a sponsored mission through Lutheran World Relief (LWR). The goals are agricultural improvements, year-round food security for the family, empowering women in the community, and increasing incomes for families. Our involvement is with nine congregations throughout the United States, including three in Washington (The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, Olympia; Trinity Lutheran Church, Freeland; and Saint Andrew s). Saint Andrew s has a Project Bihar/LWR working group that has defined three major components in our mission: communication, engagement and giving. If you are interested in joining our Project Bihar/LWR Working Group contact Marlyn Thorpe. Project Bihar Prayer Bookmarks Project Bihar Prayer bookmarks are in hymnals. Use them in the hymnals and/or take them home and pray for the highlighted family and their community. Thank you for praying and blessing each of these Bihar families. Remember in prayer this continuing outreach ministry. Contributions can be made to Saint Andrew s with Bihar- LWR in the memo line. We [at Congregations for the Homeless (CFH)] are excited to let you know that Linda Hall recently accepted the position of Project Manager for the Permanent Men s Shelter. She will be building on Steve s great work. A long-time Redmond resident and active community volunteer, Linda also has spent nearly 20 years working within the affordable housing field (primarily on the Eastside), both developing and managing a range of housing options for our community members in need. We are confident she brings the experience and skills needed to move forward our vision for the Eastside Permanent Men s Shelter. CFH continues to be committed to helping site, build, and then operate a permanent shelter and day center in Bellevue for men experiencing homelessness in our community. Linda has the experience and skills needed to make sure that this project will be successful and move forward as quickly as possible.
