The end of all things is near; therefore be serious and discipline yourselves for the sake of your prayer. Above all maintain constant love for one another, for love covers a multitude of sins. Be hospitable to one another without complaining. Like good stewards of the manifold grace of God, serve one another with whatever fit each of you has received. Whoever speaks must do so as one speaking the very word of God; whoever serves must do so with the strength that God supplies, so that God may be glorified in all things through Jesus Christ. To him belong the glory and the power forever and ever. Amen. (1 Peter 4:7-11 NRSV) I G a t h am often asked about our church; I sometimes remind that we are a congregation which is part of the one, holy, catholic, and apostolic church. For that is our confession of faith. I like Peter and the words written and shared with congregations scattered throughout Asia Minor. Congregations likely pondering and praying about what mission truly meant in times which were, like ours, sort of difficult in many ways. Fall is a time or harvest. The leaves quicken and fall; the spring flowers become the winter reminders that life changes with the seasons. Times change, people change but one things remains constant, we are the stewards of the gifts God has given to us. Soon, very soon, we will continue through the time of Labor Day to Thanksgiving. Times in which we anticipate a bit more darkness. Into which we are called to bear witness to the light and the love of Christ. I invite you to read anew the words that are from 1 Peter. Note that the text seems to be a prayer near the end of all things, the time of Christ s return. Each day ought to be lived that way. And our call, our work is worship and life. To be about the joy of being good managers, stewards, of all that God has given us to be the Body of Christ in the world. The joy continues as we wait for His coming, even so, come, Lord Jesus. In the time being, keep on serving, in serving for that is who are this community of new beginning every single day. See you in church! These include a worship summary form for kids (available in the Narthex), prayer/offering cards for kids (in the pew racks), Little Disciples Tips in the bulletin on how to engage children in worship, and a spot set aside just for kids on the east side of the Sanctuary. Children may borrow Spark Bibles (available in the Narthex) during worship to follow along with the lessons and parts of worship. Worship and Liturgical Arts Orchestra The Saint Andrew s Orchestra will play during both worship services on Sunday, October 14. Rehearsal is Saturday, October 13, at 10:00 am. To participate or for more information, contact Dr. Will Simpson, will@salchome.org or Blessing of the Animals In gratefulness for God s creation we will gather on Sunday, October 7, at 4:00 pm with our special pets for a service led by Pastor Drew Yoos to give God thanks and praise along with prayers and blessings for our animals. Invite and bring a friend (furry, scaly, feathery, reptile, or human.) Please make sure your pet is leashed or caged and in control. Alternatively, you can bring a photo of your pet. Following the service, the humans will gather for a potluck dinner in 301/Fellowship Hall North. Volunteers Needed If you typically attend the 11:00 am worship service, please consider volunteering to be an usher, greeter or lector. The need is greatest for ushers! We welcome new volunteers for the 8:30 am service, too. Please contact Fellowship Coordinator Sherry Grindeland, sherry@salchome.org or Communion Bread - Bakers Needed! Help is needed: we have no one signed up for the remainder of the year to bake Communion bread. This quite easy and important ministry needs you and your family to give an hour to baking bread which feeds our faith family every Sunday at the altar. There are two ways to help: You can sign up for a specific Sunday to bring bread. The link to the sign-up can be found on the Saint Andrew s website: Scroll to Bake Communion Bread. The bread freezes well, so you can also bake when it is convenient for you, without signing up for a specific day. The bread can be baked anytime, sealed in zip lock bag with the date it was baked on the label, and brought to church. Place the bread in container marked Altar Guild Bread in the freezer in the Scullery. We use the Luther Bread recipe, found at (again, scroll down to Bake Communion Bread ). Are you able to help? Contact coordinator Jill Nichols-Hicks for more information. Timber Ridge Worship Gatherings Several members of Saint Andrew s and Our Savior Lutheran Church in Issaquah live at Timber Ridge in Issaquah. Our next worship gathering is October 17. All are invited (members and friends of Saint Andrew s - whether you live at Timber Ridge or not!). Inquire at the front desk to Timber Ridge when you arrive and they will direct you to the room location. 2 - Saint Andrew s Lutheran Church, Bellevue WA October 2018

3 Sound System Upgrades Worship and Liturgical Arts The Sanctuary will soon be getting a new sound system and Fellowship Hall will see some upgrades. We have contracted with Morgan Sound for the work. We are confident in the choice of Morgan Sound as our provider and installer. It is one of the best sound companies on the west coast, providing sound for Safeco Field, many concert venues, and churches. The work will include: In the Sanctuary: Eight new speakers will be installed, covering more high and low sounds with greater clarity throughout the Sanctuary. These new speakers will greatly improve intelligibility and clarity of the spoken word and amplified music. Combining the new speakers, new time delay circuitry, and new wireless microphones with a new digital mixing board, we will be able to hear the pastor, lectors, and music that uses microphones much better with no dead zones. In Fellowship Hall: Morgan Sound will be installing an equalizer to improve sound, and 40-plus acoustic panels on the ceiling of Fellowship Hall to cut down on ambient noise and improve the overall acoustics of the room. Installation will occur the final week of September. Sharon Gurtel and John Nelson are the point persons representing Saint Andrew s in this installation. We look forward to a marked improvement from our current system. The funds for the work, about $35,000, will come from a gift to Saint Andrew s from the estate of Ed Short. This completes years of review and research into improving our current sound system, so that all may hear more clearly. Property Ponderings Property Ponderings An occasional missive from your Facilities Manager 1) Emergency Drill, Sunday October 21: The church will be exercising an emergency drill during the Discipleship Hour on Sunday, October 21. This year, the practiced action will be a police response. Real world scenarios that could initiate a police response at Saint Andrew s could be something as simple as someone yelling or becoming belligerent. Or it could be as devastating as a Sandy Hook or Parkland type of event. Anytime that a police response is appropriate, anyone can push one the of blue Police buttons located at exit doors throughout our building. The buttons are simple to operate: lift the cover, press and hold the blue button for about two seconds. This will sound the police siren alarms throughout the building, call 911 for a police response, lockdown the exterior doors, and send text messages to teachers and staff. If you hear the siren alarm in the building, you should take one of these three actions, in preference order: a) RUN If you can safely run away from the event, that should be your first priority. While at Saint Andrew s, you should run to the Mormon Temple parking lot. b) HIDE If you don t know where the event is, or cannot safely run in the opposite direction, you should hide in your current location. You should lock the doors to the room, close the blinds and shades, turn off the lights, and be silent. There are room-specific protocols to effectively Hide in every room; they are on the back of the Evacuation Map. c) FIGHT Only as a last resort, if you cannot Run or Hide, should you engage the attacker. Some teachers and staff choose to carry keychain size pepper spray. You can also disrupt the attacker by throwing books, chairs, or anything available to you. The best short video demonstrating these actions is at: A more appropriate video for children is at: Washington schools are required to have a lockdown drill three times each year, so kids are probably more familiar with this than adults. There will be an after-church training and discussion seminar about the police response drill on Sunday, October 7, at 12:30 pm in 301/Fellowship Hall North. 2) Work Day Thank you everyone for helping out at the All Church Work Day September 15: John Nelson, Marv Kananen and Jean Wahlstrom, Gary Rudolph, Susan Hegedus, Art and Sharon Gurtel, Todd Carmichael, Shirley Hobson, Ann Thorpe, Christine Zomorodian, Camille Vaska, Carla Smith, Alex Nichols-Hicks, Kit Bowerman, and Cub Scout Pack 633 and families. 4 Discipleship Ministries. The vision of Discipleship Ministries is To gather, encourage and equip all people through active learning, how to embody faith in Jesus as they are sent into the world. Changes to ABC (Affirmation of Baptism/Confirmation) Program by Pastor Drew Yoos, Interim Director of Discipleship Ministries The program year has brought some changes to our ABC program and I wanted to keep the congregation up to date on what is new and why the changes are being made. Before she left, former Director of Discipleship Ministries Emily Harrow had done an assessment with students, parents, and the Discipleship Committee about what was working in the ABC program and what was not working as well. She then compiled all of those findings along with a proposal for the changes that are now being implemented. The main findings of the survey were that ABC was not participatory enough, parents were not as connected as they wanted to be, and too much was being asked of the reflections. In response, we have changed the program in several significant ways: Instead of dividing the class by grade level, the entire ABC program will gather together each week for a lesson for the first half of the Discipleship Hour. During the second half of the Discipleship Hour, the students will divide into small groups for reflection, sharing, and prayer with an adult mentor that focuses on how that lesson applies to their life. The curriculum is now on a 3-year cycle and each class will be taught once every 3 years with the following exceptions: Bible Overview, Worship and Liturgy (6th), Ethics (7th) and ABC Prep (8th) will be taught every year. The grade levels will split for these courses towards the end of the year. For now, there will not be an official 1-to-1 mentor program like in the past. Despite the value that these relationships bring, finding mentors and finding someone to coordinate the program became a burden. Instead the word mentor will be used to describe the adult who leads the small group reflection and prayer time mentioned above. I have encouraged mentors from previous years to maintain mentor relationships with the students as much as possible. The number of worship reflections has been reduced from 10 per year to 4 per year. Each grade level will complete 2 additional topical reflections per year. The reflections may be written or done creatively through another medium- art, poetry, video, presentation, etc. Throughout the year we will have 4 lunches where students and their parents will gather for food, some learning, discussion, and a faith practice. These changes represent a more holistic way of thinking about ABC where the emphasis is on living a life of faith as much as learning tenets of the faith. I hope that you will be supportive of students, teachers, parents, and mentors as we navigate these changes and prepare these wonderful youth to affirm their baptism! Youth Registration Forms All families need to complete a Youth Registration Form each year. This form gives us the information to help keep children safe while participating in Saint Andrew s activities. It includes medical information and permissions, and is used for all activities at Saint Andrew s for Complete one form per family; it covers all youth from age 2 through Grade 12. For the safety of all, background checks are required for all adults who work with children. New on this year s registration form is a place for two adults in the household to authorize Saint Andrew s to perform a background check. This authorization is optional, but will save time and effort for any adult who may want to volunteer with youth this year. The registration form can be found in the Narthex near the church office, in the Sunday Church School office, and in classrooms. Return completed forms to the church office. The form is also ONLINE as an interactive PDF form; it can be found at Open the form and SAVE it to your computer. Open the saved form, complete the information, and SAVE it again. οο Please note: If you have a saved registration form with revised August 2014 (or more recent date) at the bottom, you can submit that form. Open it and update the school year and Today s Date, make any other necessary changes, and save. If you submit a previous year s form and wish to volunteer for youth activities, you will need to complete a separate background check authorization form. Contact the church office or Interim Director of Discipleship Ministries Pastor Drew Yoos to get the form. Either the form to info@salchome.org or print and return the form to Saint Andrew s. 4 - Saint Andrew s Lutheran Church, Bellevue WA October 2018

5 Tuesday Morning Bible Study Every Tuesday, 10:00 am 11:00 am, 322/Conference Room Presenter: Pastor James McEachran September 25 We wrap up a view into the Book of Ruth. It is meant to be a bridge writing between the First Testament and the New. It is a unique writing which, unlike many books in the First Testament, engages us in themes of love and marriage, simple faith, and the tilling of the land. In a time of strife, the key is that common people live common lives with meaning and in hope. September 25 - Boaz and Ruth marry; Ruth chapter 4 Come and share the time as we check into the Davidic Line and the roots of all that we celebrate with a later time birth in Bethlehem. October 2 Pick a Bible. Pastor McEachran will bring a number of Bibles and suggest some of the best for beginning and in-depth study of the Word of God. Bring your favorite translation and join the workshop of Word-Digging. Oh, and guess which is his favorite translation! Discipleship Ministries October 9 We begin a new series: Witness to New Life in Christ --- Paul s Letter to the Romans. Paul had a new vision for his mission, to travel to Spain in a missionary journey for the Lord. It may have been that his mission support came from the house churches in Rome. The Letter to the Romans was his witness to what new life in Christ really meant. We will begin a 10 week study on Tuesday, October 9. We will begin with a reading and unfolding of Romans 16. This time will mark a study which will mark for each of us a path of witness and service as ambassadors for Christ in the world. Here is the challenge, the opportunity. Invite a friend or two, bring you favorite translation. May 12 (Fifth Grade) presentation of Catechisms: Fall 2019 Looking Ahead to 2019 Congregation Council by Scott Lester, Congregation Council President Your Congregation Council and has had some great feedback in recent weeks concerning all of the activity that has been going on, even during the summer when things often tend to slow down. We ve had retreats and outings, facility updates and improvements, workshops and events, and some fantastic worship and programming. To all of our ministry team, lay leaders, active committees, and congregation members, the Council Leadership wants to say the Holy Spirit is here and working through you. Thank you. The Council has also heard some very valid feedback that we re very good at communicating what has taken place recently in addition to what will be happening in the next few weeks. However, some members have also been asking for a longer view on key topics. The following narratives offer a forecast of important strategic initiatives and transitions. Interim Director of Discipleship Ministries Following the departure of our Director of Discipleship Ministries Emily Harrow, the Council, in conjunction with the Discipleship Ministries and Human Resources (HR) Committees, determined it was important to keep the momentum of our programming progressing. In coordinating with the Northwest Washington Synod, and through some prayer and the clear presence of the Holy Spirit, we were able to enter and complete a detailed, yet facilitated process to hire Pastor Drew Yoos to a 1 year contract position. He started in August His contract will take him into August of Pastor Drew will pace himself into his new role over the next few months. He has done an excellent job at picking up where Emily left off. In early 2019, the Discipleship Ministries Committee and the HR Committee will initiate dialogue into the best movement forward to review the Director of Discipleship Ministries position, the structure of the role in the future, and how to proceed with a recruitment and hiring process. We will also carefully consider how the process intersects with our Pastoral Call Process. Visioning As a follow-on to the Joshua Group engagement in 2017, the Vision Team held workshops in July 2018 to initiate the Vision Framework process. That team has taken information from those workshops to develop initial drafts of a Uniqueness Statement and new Mission Statement. The Vision Framework consists of four parts: (1) Mission, (2) Values, (3) Strategy and (4) Measurement. In October 2018, the Vision Team will convene a workshop to begin developing the Values propositions. The Vision Team is positioning to announce a new Mission Statement and Value Propositions at the 2019 January Annual Meeting. Leading up to that event, there will be additional opportunities for Congregation members to participate. It was decided that Strategy and Measurement elements would be held until we have Transitional Pastor in place so that they could be completed in concert with the development of our Mission Site Profile (MSP). continued on page Saint Andrew s Lutheran Church, Bellevue WA October 2018

9 Congregation Council continued from page 8 Pastoral Transition and the Call Process Pastor McEachran serves as our Senior Pastor until January 7, There will be a special event honoring him and his service with and for Saint Andrew s Lutheran Church on Saturday, January 5. On Sunday, January 6, there will be one worship service followed by a special fellowship hour. As we move through fall, the Synod will coordinate with us on expectations. As part of that, Pastor Shelley Wee will be with us for a couple of Sundays. Bishop Kirby Unti is looking to notify us of our interim pastor appointment sometime in the November/December timeframe. We are hopeful that a Transition Pastor will begin in January with the possibility that an introduction would take place at our Annual Meeting itself. We should be careful not to get ahead of ourselves in discussing a Call Process. It is important that we move deliberately first through our Mission Site Profile (MSP) process and the completion of our Visioning Process. One of the first actions of the new Council in 2019 will be to appoint the Transition Team responsible for working with Transition Pastor on the MSP. Building Our building serves as a foundation for many congregational activities and supports outreach. We will recognize the work of the Design Advisory Group, have Council members meet with the architect, and prioritize building changes so they best support our mission and remain within a reasonable budget. Council Members have coordinated with the Finance Committee to evaluate and estimate what the boundaries of a comfortable capital appeal and campaign would tolerate. As a result, we will be going back to the architect to discuss an approach forward with hopes of achieving a scaled-back design concept. The timeline remains soft and your continued patience with the process is appreciated. We re hopeful that at some point the architect will be in a position to deliver a presentation to the congregation. However, given a variety of other concurrent initiatives and transitions, it should be understood that we have been careful not to surge ahead too aggressively with a building campaign. We also know the need for new bathrooms and other important updates understandably exists and we will be certain to get a clear sense of how we might strategically phase work. An update on the Building will occur at the Annual Meeting or later in Stewardship Our Stewardship Committee is doing a phenomenal job. They are seeking traditional support as we enter the fall season. Your engagement with them in advance of our annual commitment Sunday event in November is welcomed. In the meantime, they would like to extend their gratitude and appreciation for your strong financial commitment to the life of our congregation and for your support of our Lattes for the Lord campaign. Nominating Committee On September 9, the Council activated the 2018 Nominating Committee. This year, the committee will be seeking eight candidates for four positions, each of which are for three-year terms. You re encouraged to consider this important opportunity to serve in the life of your congregation. The Council does important work every year, but this next year promises to invite our congregation into several new challenges and opportunities. Annual Meeting and Forums Prior to the Annual Meeting In the coming weeks committees will begin preparing their 2019 budgets. In advance of the Annual Meeting in January, the Council will again host a series of special mid-service discipleship hour events to address the budget and other salient church committee activities. This has been a meaningful process in the past two years as a means to prepare congregation members prior to the Annual Meeting Council Advance Your Council is beginning to plan its 2019 Council Advance which is planned to occur within the first couple of weeks of February. In contrast to previous Council Advances, we are considering having Committee Chairs included in the 2019 Advance. We plan to present and discuss a proposed new Saint Andrew s Lutheran Church Mission Statement and associated Values Propositions. The Council will use the Advance to get everyone on board regarding how the mission and values can and should be shared and expressed throughout the entire congregation. We will have a new Transition Pastor, and it will be important for the Council, Committee Chairs, and other church leaders to use the advance as a springboard for work pertaining to the MSP, Visioning Process and a future Call Process. Please contact me with any questions. October 2018 Saint Andrew s Lutheran Church, Bellevue WA - 9

11 Saint Andrew s Visioning Initiative Initiatives We held two Visioning Workshops in July. There was great participation at both workshops. A lot of excellent discussions were had, and ideas were shared. An abundance of data and input was collected. Thank you for your participation and input! Since the workshops, the Vision Team has been very busy. They have been correlating the data and working on synthesizing clear, concise statements that captures your concepts. The team continues to meet weekly. This process takes time. We want it done well. Soon they will be ready to share the results for review and feedback. Coming up are two opportunities for you to participate in the process. On Sunday, October 7, during the 9:45 am Discipleship Hour, the team will share the results of the first two workshops for your review and feedback. On the following Sunday, October 14, after the 11:00 am service, we will have a third workshop. This workshop will be on our values why we do what we do. This workshop will be from 12:30 pm to 3:00 pm. A light lunch and child care will be provided. So, mark your calendars. We will see you at these events. Contact Dick Szabo for more information..... on The Harvest Reflections.... by Lowell Arneson five year old boy stood just outside the cookhouse. In the cookhouse, several women were preparing large A quantities of food. In front of the boy, about 200 feet away, sat a massive machine, not moving, but with many moving parts noisily clanking and chugging away. From the big machine, a long belt stretched to a big iron tractor referred to as the steam engine, which supplied the necessary power to run the machine. Several pairs of men would come, each with a hayrack, full of bundles of wheat from the field, pulled by a team of horses. The men would pitch the bundles into the machine and out would come beautiful, plump grains of wheat into a wagon, ready for another team of horses to pull into the granary. A large, long pipe extended from the back of the machine from which a steady stream of straw would shoot out, eventually forming a giant straw stack. The big machine was a threshing machine, and the whole operation was referred to as a threshing rig run by a threshing crew about 16 men. The boy standing, agog, watching all this was I, which I m sure you probably assumed. I am rather surprised at how much detail I remember from that day. I remember the heat, the wheat stubble under foot, and the dust and chaff hanging in the air. But another - probably the most important - thing I recall was the mood of the workers (the men on the rig and the women in the cookhouse). They all seemed happy and joyful. They could remember life only ten years earlier in the depth of the Depression and drought, when the wheat crop was perhaps 10 or 12 bushels to the acre. Now it was running up to 40 bushels. The war was still raging on, but the tide was turning. Hope had returned to an almost broken people. Harvest times are usually happy times. Whether you are harvesting farm crops, or timber, or fish, or anything else, it almost always represents the work of one s hands, coupled with, of course, some good fortune (blessings, such as timely, good weather). Harvesting seems to have a universal reaction of thankfulness and appreciation. Think of the first Thanksgiving. I have thought many times about our national Thanksgiving Holiday. Think about what it says about a country and people who set aside a whole day every year for the primary purpose of being thankful. I find it remarkable and satisfying. The word harvest is one of those words in our language that seems laden with many connotations. And many of those connotations are loaded with emotion. There seems to be an implied sense of culmination the peak or climax of a certain project. Another connotation is that the harvest is a prelude to a time of rest or retirement. When that last load of grain is in the granary, and the last load of potatoes is on its way to the warehouse, and the last load of cattle is loaded and off to market, the farmer thinks, It s over for another year. Take a break. Thank you! In Matthew s gospel, Jesus describes the crowd he was looking at, as helpless like sheep without a shepherd. Then He likens them to a harvest, saying, The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Workers were needed to introduce the sheep to the Shepherd, Welcome to the kingdom of God. There is still a shortage of workers. The harvest is still plentiful. October 2018 Saint Andrew s Lutheran Church, Bellevue WA - 11

13 Men s Retreat M en: Plan to join us for our Men s Retreat on Friday- Saturday, October 26-27, at Valley Camp in North Bend. Our facilitator for the weekend is Pastor Timothy Weber, who will speak on the theme Enriching Life by Embracing Our Dying: The Proper Use of Death Bed Regrets. A description... Psalm 90 admonishes to do the unnatural: Teach us to number our days that we might apply our hearts unto wisdom. We do everything to avoid the reality of our dying as Ernst Becker underscored in his prize winning book, THE DENIAL OF DEATH. It is unnatural, maybe even frightening, for us to look at our dying boldly in the face with the prayer: teach me to learn from my dying how I might live with greater abundance. For this task we need the power of the Spirit, courage to face the conversation, and partners in our faith community who might help us. The promise of Christ is that the abundant life awaits us even more than we would ever think. But, this also requires a suffering under the cross which, in this case, is suffering our suffering of dying and learning what we can, and making new and fresh decisions about living with our numbered days. Brochures with registration forms will be available soon! Contact Dick Swaisgood for more information. Tuesday Morning Men Every Tuesday 6:30 am 7:30 am, Room 212 Facilitator: Dick Swaisgood We have read through the Gospel of Mark, and have just begun a study of Mark with Immersion Bible Studies by Emerson B. 14 Key Facts About Influenza (FLU) by Beverley Watt, R.N., Parish Nurse Health and Wholeness What is Influenza (Flu) Flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by Influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat and sometimes the lungs. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. The best way to prevent flu is by getting a flu vaccine each year. It takes about 2 weeks after vaccination for antibodies to develop in the body and provide protection against influenza virus infection. And, YES, it is possible to get sick with the flu even if you have been vaccinated as you may have been exposed to the flu virus shortly before being vaccinated or during the period that it takes your body to gain protection after getting vaccinated. Flu Symptoms Fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills, fatigue and sometimes diarrhea and vomiting. It s important to note that not everyone with flu will have a fever. How Flu Spreads: Flu viruses spread mainly by tiny droplets made when people with flu cough, sneeze, or talk. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby. Less often, a person might get the flu by touching a surface or object that has flu virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose or possibly their eyes. Period of Contagiousness: You may be able to pass on flu to someone else before you know you are sick, as well as while you are sick. People with flu are most contagious in the first 3-4 days after their illness begins. Some otherwise healthy adults may be able to infect others beginning 1 day before symptoms develop and up to 5 to 7 days after becoming sick. (continued) Onset of Symptoms: The time from when a person is exposed and infected with flu to when symptoms begin is about 2 days, but can range from about 1 to 4 days. Complications of Flu: Complications of flu can include bacterial pneumonia, ear infections, sinus infections and worsening of chronic medical conditions such as congestive heart failure, asthma or diabetes. People at High Risk from Flu: People 65 years and older, people of any age with certain chronic medical conditions (such as asthma, diabetes, or heart disease), pregnant women and children younger than 5 years. However, anyone can get flu (even healthy people), and serious problems related to flu can happen at any age. Flu Vaccine Available at Saint Andrew s On the second Sunday of October, October 14, from 8:00 am to 11:00 am, a nurse from the Seattle Visiting Nurse Association will be present in Room 212 to administer the Quadrivalent Flu Shot for a price of $40.00, which is covered by most insurances. If you have no insurance, payment can be made by check or cash. The High Dose Flu Shot will not be available. The above information was obtained from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Please feel free to contact them for more information on other health issues. There will be copies of the above information and additional information available soon in the Narthex. 15 Health and Wholeness Stroke By Stella Nieman, RN Parish Nurse Portions of this article are taken from the November 2013 issue of the VOICE. Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. 1 Corinthians 12:12 NIV Today, more and more Americans are protecting their most important asset -- their brain. ARE YOU? Stroke ranks as the fourth leading killer in the United States. A stroke can be devastating to individuals and their families, robbing them of their independence. It is the most common cause of adult disability. Each year [2013] more than 700,000 Americans have a stroke, with about 160,000 dying from stroke-related causes. What is a Stroke? A stroke, or brain attack, occurs when blood circulation to the brain fails. Brain cells can die from decreased blood flow and the resulting lack of oxygen. There are two broad categories of stroke: those caused by a blockage of blood flow and those caused by bleeding into the brain. Two key steps you can take will lower your risk of death or disability from stroke: control stroke s risk factors and know stroke s warning signs. What are the Warning Signs of a Stroke? Warning signs are clues your body sends that your brain is not receiving enough oxygen. If you observe one or more of these signs of a stroke or brain attack, don t wait, call a doctor or 911 right away! What are the Risk Factors for a Stroke? AGE: Stroke occurs in all age groups. Studies show the risk of stroke doubles for each decade between the ages of 55 and 85. But strokes also can occur in childhood or adolescence. GENDER: Men have a higher risk for stroke, but more women die from stroke. RACE: People from certain ethnic groups have a higher risk of stroke. African Americans and Hispanic Americans have a higher incidence of age-adjusted incidence of stroke. FAMILY HISTORY OF STROKE: Stroke seems to run in some families due to a genetic tendency for stoke risk factors, such as an inherited disposition for high blood pressure or diabetes. The influence of a common lifestyle among family members also could contribute to familial stroke. What are Ways to Reduce the Risk of Having a Stroke? Information is taken from the flyer entitled Preventing Stroke with permission from BRAIN basics of the NINDS agency, and from The Hope Heart Institute. There are some of the men whom we see there every week and we get to know their style and their names. Sometimes they have special requests (like a fanny pack) or ask for a sewing kit to sew a button back on. Often they ask me what church I m from and I tell them, including directions on how to get to Saint Andrew s and my assurance that they will be welcome. I hope many of you will be able to come to the CFH 9th Annual Luncheon and hear the stories of some of the men in person. It is a wonderful gathering at Bellevue Presbyterian Church starting at 10:30 am on Thursday, October 4. I would enjoy seeing more folks from Saint Andrew s there and there is still room at my table when you RSVP! Contact me for more information. Be a Driver for Chicken Soup Brigade Saint Andrew s is a distribution hub for weekly deliveries of meals for Chicken Soup Brigade (Lifelong). Meals and groceries are picked up at Saint Andrew s on Thursdays and delivered to homebound chronically ill individuals on the Eastside, providing them with needed nourishment. The delivery window is 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm on Thursday afternoons with around 2 to 4 stops. The total delivery time is usually about 1 1/2 hours. Join us and choose to be a driver in the rotation or to be a substitute driver and cover weeks where regular volunteers are on vacation. Training provided. Contact Outreach and Servant Ministries committee chair Marlyn Thorpe. Collections Dorcas Circle, Health and Wholeness Ministry, and Outreach and Servant Ministries welcome your contributions for Lutheran World Relief, Compass Housing Alliance, and Congregations for the Homeless. Lists of needed items are in the baskets near the elevator in the Narthex. Donations can be placed in the same baskets. October 2018 Saint Andrew s Lutheran Church, Bellevue WA - 19

Adult Mission Trip on the Horizon Would you be interested in an adult work party and mission trip to the Navajo Lutheran Mission in Rock Point, Arizona? Probable dates would be March 21-April 4, The trip would include a combination of construction work (no experience necessary) and less physical things such as volunteering in the kitchen, participating in a Bible study, or listening to children read. Your cost would be air fare and hotel stays for two nights. An expression of interest is not a definite commitment at this point but space is limited for this adventure. Got questions? Or if you re ready to sign up, please contact Fellowship Coordinator Sherry Grindeland, sherry@salchome.org or Boxtops for Education In December 2016 Jean Wahlstrom and Marvin Kananen volunteered for a month at the Navajo Lutheran Mission (NELM) in Rock Point, Arizona, an ELCA project. The Mission School has asked if Saint Andrew s would participate in this easy way to secure needed school supplies and equipment. Please cut out and bring those little coupons found on various food containers (General Mills products and others). Collect and put them in the envelope attached to the bulletin board in the Narthex, labeled BOX TOPS. These small coupons really add up to enable these children to get a better education!! To learn more, visit Collection of Socks and Hats for Compass Housing Alliance In November and December Dorcas Circle will be collecting new white socks and warm hats for Compass Housing Alliance. Your donations can be placed in the box in the Narthex. If you have any questions, please contact Linda Willenberg. October 2018 Saint Andrew s Lutheran Church, Bellevue WA - 21
