Galatians 3:2 During the past month I have been preaching a sermon series entitled: The Courage to Live. It s been a series focused on discerning how, as disciples and followers of Jesus, the resurrection makes a difference in our lives. As I have been preaching one of the things that has stood out to me is the way the disciples spread the good news of Jesus resurrection. Notice it s not by doing miracles or even by acts of holy living, but it s through their proclamation and their teaching. This insight has forced me to spend more time thinking about what I hear, as well as what I preach. Paul, when he has corresponding with the Galatians, urged them to think about the same things. We read at the top of this article how Paul posed the question of where the Holy Spirit came from to the Galatians. Affirming to them the Holy Spirit doesn t come when they do, but when they hear. That is not to say action isn t required. On the contrary, action is required, as Paul writes in chapter 5 The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. So let me ask you: What do you listen to? If I were to jump in your car and turn on the radio would music come on, or talk radio? If I was to look on the DVR what kind of shows would I see? The things we listen to shape us. What are the things that shape you? Who are the voices that you hold in high regard? Again let me ask you: What do you proclaim? Who are the companies that you tell your friends about? What kind of gifts do you like to give to others? What kind of advice do you like to pass on? Whose political sign are you willing to put up in your yard? The things we proclaim define us. As you ponder how the resurrection makes a difference in your life consider what you hear and proclaim. 3 Worship and Liturgical Arts The Emmaus Trio, May 15 T he Emmaus Trio is violinist Karin Islip, cellist Lauren Root, and pianist Dr. Will Simpson. After performing together in the orchestra last summer at Saint Andrew s, this trio began to rehearse together on a weekly basis, becoming The Emmaus Trio. They enjoy performing both standard repertoire works as well as works that are unique and rarely performed. On Sunday, May 15, at 3:00 pm, The Emmaus Trio will play Beethoven s Piano Trio opus 70 no. 2, which is a work of tremendous power and scope, and one of Beethoven s greatest chamber works. The second half of the concert features a Tango by the Argentine composer Astor Piazzolla, and also the musically descriptive and beautiful piece Circullo by the Spanish composer Joaquin Turina. This 3:00 pm concert is part of our Sunday Concert Series, and is FREE and open to the public. Turning Sixty Saint Andrew s Anniversary Turning Sixty. Charter Members in 1956 included nearly 75 people who were convicted there needed to be a Lutheran Church in Eastgate. The United Lutheran Church in America invited Pastor Don Clinton to canvass the neighborhoods and to gather a community to build a congregation. They met at the Hill Stop Café at Eastgate. Worshipped and prayed, sang and shared the good news of Jesus and made the commitment to become Saint Andrew s Lutheran Church in Eastgate, a small city portal to Seattle. Four Charter Members continue to be regular in their worship and in the life of our congregation: Gil Bruntz, Ruth Chavers, and Don and Lois Korsch. They helped guide the congregation through times of challenge and opportunity. As Bellevue grew, they became a community which continued to build a faithful congregation which became a lead congregation in the United Lutheran Church, the Lutheran Church in America, and now the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. At each turn in the road, clarity in mission characterized leadership and people. Pastors Don Clinton, Homer Berner, and Oscar Rolander provided just the gift necessary in times when the community welcomed the change which comes through the sharing and living the life of Christ in community. In 1983, I met with the first three Pastors and invited them to both inform and inspire my beginnings as Senior Pastor. Times of interim were seldom more than 90 days. Each of them was served by Pastor Chuck Bomgren as what was then called Vice Pastor. At each new calling, the lay leadership kept the focus on Word and Sacrament which led to robust outreach in the community and in the world. Through the past years, I have been privileged to serve with a core of clergy, Pastor Rita Anderson, Dr. Timothy Weber for 22 years, Dr. Ken Bakken, and, for the past five years, Pastor Wes Telyea. In addition, nearly 90 lay staff have continued to support and create new pathways in times of change which called for stability. On May 20 we will mark our 60 th year. We will give thanks to God for our Shared Ministry. In that time, we will commit to move forward and more deeply into the next days of growth and a deepening of our discipleship which lives hopefully into the next generation. Then, at our Semi-Annual Meeting, on June 19, we will recognize our Charter Members, and honor two of our original Lay Liturgists, Dave Kolden and Ed Short. A time to remember a bit, but as always, to look forward to the places that God is leading us. A privilege to serve, see you in church! In Peace, Emily Harrow, Director of Discipleship Ministries Volunteer Survey The Discipleship Ministries Committee has put together a vision that will guide us in decisions as we move forward. Our vision is To gather, encourage and equip all people through active learning, how to embody faith in Jesus as they are sent into the world. As we put this vision into practice, we are looking at how we use volunteers and how we utilize the gifts in our community. We would appreciate your feedback in a two-question survey. The survey is online at and paper copies are available in the Narthex. Thank you for completing it and giving some much needed insight! 8 .... on SIXTY YEARS Reflections.... by Lowell Arneson was a very long time ago! I would guess that less than half of you remember it well. This was only years after the end of WWII. General Eisenhower had been President Eisenhower for 4 years, and was running for a second term. The U.S. population was about 170 million (320 million today), federal debt was about $275 billion (over $18 trillion today), and a first class postage stamp was $0.03. The mood of America was upbeat. Since the war was over, the domestic economy was thriving. A lot of veterans were going to college or trade schools on the GI Bill. More people were buying homes, and the boomer years were in full swing. Soon to come would be the space program (travel to the moon), President Kennedy s assassination, Vietnam (anti-war, anti-draft, pretty much anti-everything demonstrations), and the rise of outrageousness in pop culture. The 60 s and 70 s brought civil rights and women s liberation issues to the fore. Watergate closed out the 70 s, and the 80 s saw the beginning of what would become a technology revolution. With the end of the cold war, Americans took a collective deep breath and turned inward during the 90 s. Technical innovation abounded, leading to what I would call the Age of the Smart Phone, starting about 10 years ago. Throughout this same sixty year period, the church (especially the churches at large) also struggled with major change. We Lutherans were no exception. Matters that we would today consider settled practice or teaching, were strongly (sometimes fiercely) debated in the 60 s, 70 s, and 80 s. Examples would be various perspectives on social justice, ordination of women, the role of church hierarchy, gays in the ministry, and many more. Many congregations broke under the strain. Saint Andrew s Lutheran Church in Bellevue did not break. Saint Andrews moved along, with ups and downs, but steady through the storms, on the foundation laid in 1956, sixty years ago this month. Pardon my lack of modesty (I know I m among friends), but our church is a model of what a twenty-first century Lutheran church should be. Here is why we have gotten to where we are. First, Saint Andrew s sees its primary purpose for existence as holding high THE CROSS, and its message of salvation through Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. Flowing from that is a strong desire to help others through a multifaceted outreach program. Second, the visionary founders, and ongoing leaders (both clergy and lay people) have refused to let the church be swayed from its core mission of service to the Eastside. I think it is significant that in 60 years, there have only been four senior pastors. That is unusual and telling. Third, SALC puts a strong emphasis on serious education, meaningful worship, and an uplifting and professional music program. Fourth, the multi-generational make-up of the congregation has provided a steady and diverse supply of leaders over the years, providing consistency in goals and priorities. Fifth, it may sound corny or naïve, but it can be said that you will never find a bunch of nicer, or more decent, people than the people of Saint Andrew s Lutheran. I am truly thankful that my wife and I, and our daughter and son-in-law, have seats at the Saint Andrew s table. May God bless us and our church as we face an unknown future, with the assurance of hope, as we have found it over the past sixty years! In Our Community Pastor McEachran has been appointed to serve on the Technical Advisory Group, which will review the list of potential actions toward the implementation of the City of Bellevue s Affordable Housing Strategy. This group of 15 citizens will meet to ensure that the goals of the Bellevue City Council are met and a plan will be formed and in place by the end of Hal Ferris has also been appointed to serve. Pastor McEachran also serves as a member and Chair of the Bellevue Human Services Committee. Emergency Operations Plan Saint Andrew s will develop an Emergency Operations Plan for our campus this year. The plan will address safety, security and communications regarding catastrophic events: fire, earthquake, violence, etc. I am seeking volunteers to help develop that plan. I anticipate this will involve no more than two meetings per month for six months. Current or former first responders or military would be especially valuable volunteers. If interested, please contact Facilities Manager Kurt Lutterman in the church office or by kurt@salchome.org. At a later stage, we will involve the entire congregation to refine that plan. Thank you, Kurt Lutterman Interested in Membership? Are you interested in becoming a member of Saint Andrew s? Please speak with Pastor McEachran, jim@salchome.org, or Pastor Telyea, wes@salchome. org, for more information. Volunteer Opportunities Have some extra time during the week or on an occasional Saturday or Sunday? Volunteers are needed on Friday mornings to assemble the Sunday bulletin. Come in to the office at 9:30 am, hang out for an hour or so with some really cool people, have great conversation and a snack as you assemble the Sunday bulletin. Or come in on the fourth Thursday of each month to help assemble the VOICE newsletter. Volunteers are also needed to help with Memorial Service Receptions. Add your name to a growing list of folks who are willing to serve in this rewarding role. Memorial Services often fall on a Saturday or a Sunday as well as during the work week. Contact Office Administrator Mary Mills, mary@salchome.org or , for more information or to volunteer for any of these ministries. Graduates! Each year, we like to recognize those who are graduating from high school and college, and note what their plans are for the next chapter of their lives. Please let us know! Send the information to Communications Specialist Susan Hegedus, susan@salchome.org or , by May 16 to be included in the next issue of the VOICE. Discipleship and Stewardship I Stewardship have been following intently the sermon series on Discipleship and trying to attend most of the Education Hours. I have to say that these Education Hour sessions have been engaging, thought provoking, and enlightening. My spiritual sense is being nourished from the content and dialogue with all of you. I have been focusing on the real basics of Discipleship. What is a disciple of Christ? What are the habits, actions, and focus of a Disciple? From my study of scripture and participation in Education Hours, I am guided to a focused listening to what God is telling me and directing my spiritual life. This includes prayer, study, and being watchful to how God is speaking to me and what he has in store. For me, that is what Stewardship is all about: listening to what God wants for your life and then acting on it. Saint Andrew s has many committees and opportunities to move forward with what God s plans are for you. Be on the lookout for how God is communicating to you, and look for ways at Saint Andrew s to put that message into motion. Blessings, Todd Carmichael, Stewardship Chair May 2016 Saint Andrew s Lutheran Church, Bellevue WA - 11

Part 1 by Art Gurtel, RPh, MS, BPharm Medicines play a significant role in the treatment of many health problems and are an increasing portion of the total cost of healthcare. They fight harmful bacteria, relieve pain, ease discomforting symptoms, and save lives. Today, healthcare providers use medicines that help cure diseases that previously had no cure. However, medicines need to be used with caution and individualized. Medicines work by affecting different parts of the body, but they can affect the actions of other medicines as they work within the body. This balance between the body and medications and between medications can be disrupted resulting in side effects and / or medication interactions. A medicine used to treat one health problem can also cause another health problem to become worse. For example, a medicine used for treating cold symptoms could make a person s high blood pressure worse. Therefore, everyone needs to be careful when taking a medicine. Older adults, in particular, frequently take more than one medication at a time. These medicines can interact with each other in unexpected ways. Anyone taking several medications at the same time should be especially careful. As the body ages, its ability to absorb and eliminate foods and medications change. In addition, as people age, the body s ability to metabolize (break down) medicines can decrease. This means that older people might need smaller doses of medicines per pound of body weight than young or middle aged adults. Side effects are usually regarded as undesirable and occur in addition to the desired therapeutic effects of a medicine. For example, a hemorrhage (bleeding) from the use of too much anticoagulant (such as heparin or warfarin) is a side effect caused by treatment going beyond the desired effect. Common side effects associated with cancer treatment including fatigue, nausea, vomiting, decreased blood cell counts, hair loss and mouth sores are instances where side effects occur in addition to the desired therapeutic effect. Side effects can occur when starting, decreasing / increasing dosages, or ending a medication treatment. Again, all medicines from aspirin to the most sophisticated prescription medicine on the market have side effects. Many are minor, some are just inconvenient, a few are serious and some are strange. The most common side effects for medicines taken orally involve the gastrointestinal tract because most medicines taken orally go through the digestive system to be absorbed. Many medicines often cause constipation and diarrhea. Other common side effects include drowsiness, pain and skin irritation / other reactions. Almost all medicines can cause nausea and / or upset stomach, though it may only occur in a few people. Dizziness, another common side effect, may not seem like a serious side effect. continued on page Saint Andrew s Lutheran Church, Bellevue WA May 2016

13 Health and Wholeness continued from page 12 However, it can have significant consequences. For elderly people, or those already unsteady on their feet, random dizziness can cause a fall that could result in broken bones. For the elderly, especially those who are already battling other medical problems, a broken hip can particularly decrease quality of life. Therefore, people should be very aware of vertigo-like (dizziness) feelings when taking medications. Like dizziness, nausea and vomiting are not considered serious side effects unless they persist over time. However, they can cause a number of medical problems, especially in the elderly or those already weakened by a disease. The resulting dehydration, internal bleeding, and esophageal rupture can even result in death. Chemotherapy medicines, which are aimed at treating cancer, are known to cause severe nausea and vomiting. All medicines have risks and benefits. Benefits can improve a person s health and quality of life when the medicines act as they were designed and approved for such as treating a disease, curing an infection, or relieving pain. On the other hand, risks, including side effects, are chances that something unwanted or unexpected will happen when medicines are used. Just because a person is taking several medicines does not mean he/she will have problems. However, to be safe, make sure that all your physicians know the medicines being prescribed by other physicians and about O-T-C medicines, herbal supplements, and illegal drugs you are taking. If you have several physicians, and if some of them do not know all the medicines being taken, a bad reaction can be mistaken as an illness. For example, some medicines can cause memory problems that are mistaken for dementia. Falls can be a sign of too much medicine rather than frailty. Many side effects can be avoided by doing the following preventive actions: Inform your physician(s) and pharmacist(s) about all medicines you are taking including herbal products and O-T-C medications. Tell your physician, nurse, and pharmacist about problems you have previously had with medicines, such as rashes, indigestion, dizziness, or loss of appetite. Ask your physician and pharmacist whether or not a specific medicine may interact with any foods / beverages or other O-T-C medicines or supplements you are taking. Read the prescription label on the medication container and medication information sheet(s) that come with your medication carefully and follow directions. Also read the labels of any O-T-C products you are taking. Determine whether or not the active ingredients have side effects and / or interactions. For example, antihistamines can cause drowsiness. Caffeine, included in some O-T-C products, can interact with certain medicines and can cause problems with conditions such as high blood pressure. Make sure you understand how often, when and how much medicine to take each day. If you experience side effects, write them down and report them as accurately as possible to your physician. Call your physician right away if you have any problems with your medicines or if you are worried that the medicine might be doing more harm than good. Do not mix alcohol and medicine unless your physician or pharmacist says that it is all right. To learn about side effects or safety concerns of a medication, read the medication label and / or the package insert. Also, talk with your pharmacist and physician about your medications. In addition, learn about medication side effects or safety concerns by accessing credible internet references such as the Index to Drug-Specific Information (/Drugs/ DrugSafety/PostmarketDrugSafetyInformationforPatientsandProviders/ucm htm). (Watch for Part 2, focusing on Medication Interactions, in the next issue of the VOICE.) Road Work on SE 28th Street Property Ponderings Puget Sound Energy will soon begin work to replace a natural gas main on SE 28th Street (the street that leads to the church parking lot.) The road will not be completely closed, but reduced to one lane with flaggers managing traffic. No driveways should ever be blocked. Construction is scheduled to begin April 25 and last for four weeks. The SE 28th Street work will be done Monday through Friday during the work day. There will also need to be work within the 148th Avenue/28th Street intersection, but this work has not yet been coordinated with the City of Bellevue. If you have any questions, please contact Facilities Manager Kurt Lutterman, kurt@salchome.org or May 2016 Saint Andrew s Lutheran Church, Bellevue WA - 13

14 Congregation Council At the April 11 Congregation Council Meeting... The Council began with worship. Pastor McEachran s devotion was on 1 Timothy 6: Council members brought items for the Lutheran World Relief Personal Care Kit collection. Council liaison assignments were reviewed. Lois Nelson is the new chair of the Staff Transition Task Force (STTF). STTF, the Signage Working Group, and Design Advisory Group all have upcoming meetings scheduled, and updates from these groups will be available next month. Pastor McEachran, Pastor Telyea, Jean Wahlstrom, and Marcia Riggers will represent Saint Andrew s as voting delegates at the Northwest Synod Assembly in May. Additional delegates are being identified. Each month, a different committee will have the opportunity to present highlights on its work. Emily Harrow gave a report on the current work of the Discipleship Ministries Committee. οο One challenge the committee is facing is recruiting new volunteers. Emily encouraged Council members to introduce her to anyone who is interested in volunteering. οο Vacation Bible School is in need of volunteers in key leadership roles. οο The Affirmation of Baptism/Confirmation program is being reviewed and reassessed. The goal is that students are prepared to be lifelong disciples of Christ as they affirm their baptism. οο The vision of the committee will guide all decisions it makes. Our finances continue to be strong, with a year-to-date surplus of over $10,000. First Quarter giving statements have been mailed (or ed). Committees, Task Forces, and Working Groups continue to be active in ministry. Dr. Will Simpson reported that the March 19 event at Crossroads Mall was successful, and enjoyed by both the audience and participants. He was able to tour the Paul Fritz organ factory in Puyallup as part of the American Guild of Organists. Performing Arts Festival of the Eastside (PAFE) continues to be a positive outreach event for Saint Andrew s. 28 congregation members volunteered for PAFE this year. The Saint Andrew s Sunday Concert Series continues with concerts on April 17, May 15, and June 5. The orchestra will play for both worship services on May 22. Pastor McEachran reported that new nametags are an effective tool and identify Council members as leaders. Lenten Prayer Partners was a positive experience for the 54 participants. He shared questions that the 8th grade ABC class wrote to discuss with him on April 17. The questions are difficult and thought-provoking. Pastor McEachran reported that he and Hal Ferris have been appointed to the Technical Advisory Group for the City of Bellevue. This group will provide input and advice about how to most effectively create more affordable housing in Bellevue. Packets containing reports from all committees are available in the church office; ask Office Administrator Mary Mills if you would like to see them. 15 Outreach and Servant Ministries Our Core Ministries... Core Outreach Ministries of Saint Andrew s are specific areas of ministry which congregation members are most involved in with various resources, including time, expertise, and financial resources. Our Core Outreach Ministries fall into five categories: ~ Affordable Housing/Homelessness ~ Hunger ~ Christian Education non-profits ~ Local Ministries ~ Global Missions The members of the Outreach and Servant Ministries Committee are: Joyce Arnold, Claudia Browers, Sarah Cannon, Dave Marcrander, Pastor McEachran, George Miller, Debbie Szabo, Dick Szabo, Marlyn Thorpe (Chair), and Jean Wahlstrom. Ministry Prayer Focus Each month, as a congregation, we pray for one of the ministries we support and partner with, in the world and in our community. Our outreach ministry prayer focus for May is Lutheran World Relief (LWR), an organization that works with local partners to provide lasting solutions to poverty, injustice and human suffering. They focus on two main areas: agriculture and emergency operations. They work to improve the lives of millions of small-scale farmers and their families, helping them adapt to and mitigate the effects of changing weather and environmental conditions. Their emergency operations often go on for years after the initial disaster, helping communities cope with and recover from emergencies in ways that promote lasting improvements in people s living conditions. Saint Andrew s supports the mission of LWR with donations of quilts, Personal Care Kits, and through sales of Fairly Traded Coffee and Chocolate. Learn more at Outreach: Personal Care Kits - Baskets of Promise Health and Wholeness Ministry is sponsoring the Baskets of Promise campaign to collect items for the Personal Care Kits for Lutheran World Relief (LWR). Kits for the Spring shipment will be assembled in late April. Because of the great need in the refugee camps in the mid-east, the need for kits is great. The Challenge 2016 Stewardship program challenges all of us to be involved in outreach to Lutheran World Relief and/or Emergency Feeding Program. Donating items for Personal Care Kits is a great way to meet that challenge! Items donated through April 24 will be included in the Spring shipment to LWR. You can help with donations of the following items: Bath towels (dark color, light weight, 27 x52 maximum size) Bath soap (4 to 5 ounce bars, in original packaging) Nail clippers (metal, large or small) Combs (large sturdy) Toothbrushes (adult size) Place your donations in the basket labeled Personal Care Kits located near the elevator in the Narthex. Thank you!
