Ephesians 4:11-13 During the Spring of 2015 I was visiting with a member of our congregation, and during the course of the our time together they were asking me about my doctoral work. As I was explaining my research interest they stopped me and asked a very pointed question. How does this research help me understand how to make sense of my faith here and now? As I tried to explain the connection I slowly began to realize how poor of a job I was doing showing how the matters of the head related to the matters of the heart. It was in this moment that I began to appreciate the struggle so many go through as they seek to live faithful lives. The study and application of Scripture should not be done as an exercise with the goal of impressing others with your depth of knowledge. The study and application of Scripture should be done so that we might find comfort, and help others find comfort, in the promises God gives to us in Christ Jesus. Ultimately the study and application of Scripture is not just for you, but should seek to build the body of Christ. As Paul writes in his letter to the Ephesians, The gifts he gave were that some would be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until all of us come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to maturity, to the measure of the full stature of Christ (Ephesians 4:11-13). It is from this background that our fall sermon series is born: Back to the Basics. It is a four week sermon series which will explore four basic elements of our faith in three ways. The first way is through the Sunday sermons. Week one will explore our Relationship with God. We will ask the questions: Who is God? What is Sin? In week two we will explore Grace, and ask the questions: What is the Word? What are the Sacraments? During week three we will explore God s Gift, and ask the question: What is the Church? Finally, the series will end as we explore the life God calls us to live, and we will ask the question: How do I respond to God today? The second way this series will explore the four basic elements of our faith is during the Education Hour through a video series entitled The Journey from Unbelief to Faith. Here we will take these basic elements of faith and explore how they work in the lives of people who came to faith. Finally we will explore these four basics elements of faith through small groups, where we will follow a program titled: Eat Dwell Pray. As we gather in fall for a new program year I pray you consider joining one of these small groups, commit to coming to worship weekly, and join us during the educational hour. All those who are interested in joining or just learning more about Altar Guild are invited! The primary duty of the Altar Guild is to prepare the altar and set the Lord s table for the congregation s worship. This requires reverence and thoroughness. An important qualification for all members of the Altar Guild is a sense of awe in the presence of God. Members should be communicants of our congregation, regular in worship attendance, always willing to learn and eager to give priority in the use of time to the Altar Guild. Tasks of the Altar Guild are not a burden, but a delight and high privilege. To a degree, the worship life of the parish depends on the Altar Guild, so members should be reliable, cooperative and committed to the work. We join in the privilege of serving God with the Pastors, liturgists, acolytes, ushers, musicians, and all others who participate in our worship experience. Generally, we serve about eight times per year, and we do have some part-time members. We have a wonderful group, and would love to have more join us! Please consider prayerfully if you could serve our congregation on the Altar Guild. For more information, please contact the co-chairs JoAn Eklof or Patricia Hashimoto. Thanks and blessings. Nursery The nursery is open on Sunday mornings but is no longer staffed. Parents/grandparents are welcome to use the nursery but must stay with their child(ren). The nursery has a sound system for hearing the service. 4 ... on Being Ready Reflections.... by Lowell Arneson The Arlington Memorial Bridge in Washington, D.C. spans the Potomac from the area around Arlington National Cemetery to the memorials (Lincoln, Washington, Jefferson, etc.) at the west end of the National Mall. It is a beautiful bridge, used by millions of tourists every year. Built in the early 1930s, it originally had a center draw span that could be raised to allow larger ships to pass through. The draw span was mechanically controlled and operated by a man who was called the tender. The tender worked in a little compartment under the bridge where the controls for the draw span were located. In his biography of President Harry Truman, David McCullough tells an enjoyable story of Truman taking an afterdinner walk. (Truman loved to walk, often with just one secret service agent. It was a long time ago.) On this particular night the President thought he would check out the Memorial Bridge. He had always been curious about how the draw span worked. The tender was sitting eating his supper out of his metal lunchbox, when he heard the sound of footsteps on the metal catwalk outside. In a moment, into his compartment stepped the President of the United States. The tender, with sandwich in hand, said, Mr. President, I was just thinking about you! Over the years, Truman told many friends he thought it was the nicest greeting he ever received from a stranger. The bridge tender was ready for many things. Much of the time was likely pretty boring, but suddenly a large boat could be blowing its whistle for the draw span to open. There were many things to be ready for in the tender s job description, but a visit from the U.S. President was probably not one of them. But he was ready for most anything it seemed. Much of our life is conditioned on being ready. Are we ready for first grade, high school, or college? Are we ready for a profession, marriage, and parenting? Are we ready to live? Are we ready to die? In the 24 th chapter of Matthew s gospel, the end times are spoken of with the urgent admonition in verse 44: Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an unexpected hour. If, when the bridge tender was going to work that day, his wife had said, Maybe the President will come by to see you today, the tender probably would have said, R i g h t. You never know. Be ready! Fall Men s Retreat MEN: SAVE THE DATES and plan to join us for our fall RETREAT on Friday-Saturday, October 30-31, at Valley Camp in North Bend. Pastor Telyea will lead us in introduction to and a discussion of, The Missional Church. The Church in the 21st century lives in a new world with a distinctly new landscape. Christendom has come to an end, and it can no longer be assumed that most people in the western world are Christians. We now live at a time some have called Post-Christendom. What does this mean for the Church? What does it mean for Saint Andrew s? How will the Church respond? How will Saint Andrew s respond? The Missional Church offers a way to help congregations discern what the Church is, and how God is working in the world today. Join Pastor Telyea as he helps makes sense of what it means to be the Church in a world that no longer believes. The cost is $40. We will end by 3:00 pm on Saturday. Brochures with registration forms are in the Narthex and online at The deadline to register is October 25. Contact Dave Marcrander or Rick West if you have any questions. Excited for Fall! Stewardship Greetings from the Stewardship Committee. For many of us it has been a busy summer filled with family, vacations, trips to new places, and time away from the normal routines. Your Stewardship Committee has also taken a break from its normal routines as we have been reaching out and connecting with other committees in preparation for Commitment Sunday. I am really excited for the events of Commitment Sunday. It is going to be quite a bit different from years past. It will start with a potluck dinner and slide show from our visiting pastor, Pastor James Johnson, on Saturday and a normal two service Sunday with a Ministry-Committee Fair between services. Look for more details coming soon. The biggest reason for my excitement is being all together as a church. The Ministry-Committee Fair is a chance for everyone to mingle and chat with the stellar Stewards of Saint Andrew s. These committees are the true Stewards of Saint Andrew s and are constantly strengthening God s foundation. I love seeing and learning what each committee is up to and what contributions they bring. When we all come together the resulting energy and familial warmth is palpable for me. I feel like a kid in a warm and loving space. Everyone is included with lots of different activities to participate in. I encourage you to look for your place to participate in the Saint Andrew s family. 10 Disaster Preparedness...Part Two by Karen Grams, R.N., Parish Nurse Health and Wholeness Lo, I am with you always Matthew 28:20 The Parish Nurses would like to provide for you some information we received about how to make preparations in your home and for your family s safety. There is so much information, the article has been divided in two parts. In the July/August 2015 issue of the VOICE, we reviewed for you the first two parts of our suggestions for preparing for a disaster in your home or community ( Be Informed and Make an Emergency Kit ). Here are parts 3 and 4. We hope the information will be of value and help ease your anxiety about whatever situation occurs, be it the BIG ONE or something smaller. #3. HAVE A PLAN Families can cope better with disasters by preparing in advance and working as a team. If something were to happen, how would you contact one another? How would you get to a safe place? Where would that safe place be for your families? Communication: Because your families and friends will likely not be together when disaster strikes, it s important to create a plan to help you and your loved ones connect and get help. Complete an EMERGENCY CONTACT CARD for each of your loved ones and keep them handy in your wallet, purse or backpack at all times. Identify a family member or friend who does not live close to where you are. Provide the phone number and address that you each can contact and check in with. Remember that phones and computers may not be working. Make sure each member of your family knows how to text. Text messaging in an emergency situation may be more effective. Show each family member when, where, and how to shut off water, gas, and electricity at main switches. Make sure they know where fire extinguishers are located, as well as emergency provisions. Periodically conduct family emergency drills. Prepare in advance for both evacuation and shelter-in-place, depending on your circumstances and the nature of the disaster. The first important decision your family will make is whether you stay put or get away. #4. GET INVOLVED Our lives are complex, and we interact each day with a multitude of other people and organizations, whether we recognize our inter-dependence or not. We send our children to schools or day care centers, we shop at stores, go to the Post Office or the gas station or the bank, we go to work. We worship in churches. We expect all of these places to be completely operational but in a disaster they may not be. In a major emergency, the response systems we rely on such as police, fire and hospitals will be overwhelmed. Government officials from all levels and the Red Cross tell us that in a disaster of catastrophic proportions, we should be prepared to be on our own for at least 72 hours. Realistically it might be 7 to 10 days. Once we have made plans and preparations to gather what we need to care for ourselves, we can think about what our neighborhoods and communities are doing to prepare for disasters. Ask local officials what plans are already in place. What hazards are most likely in your area? How will alerts and warnings be issued? What plans are in place for evacuations or sheltering in place? Are there opportunities for preparedness education available? Consider these questions for your workplace, your children s schools, recreation areas, shopping malls, and your place of worship. If possible, volunteer to support disaster response efforts. We are never ready for a disaster. We have no idea when will get hit by an earthquake or tsunami. We pray the emergencies that happen in our lifetime will be small and easily handled, but we also know we are overdue for the BIG ONE. Please make an effort to make preparations, so that for your peace of mind, for the safety of your loved ones, and for the sake of your community you know that you ve done what you can to be as ready as you can be. 11 Flu Shots... Caring for Our Community by Beverley Watt, R.N., Parish Nurse... he careth for you. 1 Peter 5:7b If you re 65 years or older, getting a flu shot is the best way to protect yourself and those around you from the flu. GET VACCINATED. The Seattle Visiting Nurse Association (SVNA) will be giving shots on Sunday, October 11, in Room 212 (the former Library) from 8:00 am to 11:00 am. SVNA is able to bill almost all insurance plans (please note that Cigna and Kaiser are NOT able to be billed.) There MAY be the High-Dose Vaccine available for seniors over 65, but we are not able to guarantee it at this time. Immunizations are open to any ages 4 years old and above. There will be NO Pneumonia vaccinations. The SVNA is the only not-for-profit agency providing the community based on-site flu shots in Washington. Your flu shot gives back by helping to provide immunization services to the uninsured and underinsured in our community. Get your flu shot from a SVNA nurse and you will not only be helping yourself, you will be helping someone in need. The flu vaccine is safe, does not cause the flu, and can protect the ones you love. More information will be forthcoming in the next few weeks. If you have any questions in the meantime, please contact Parish Nurse, Beverley Watt. Information for this article is from SVNA and the Centers for Disease Control organizations. Health and Wholeness Pastoral Care KnitWits (Knitting as Witnesses) Saint Andrew s KnitWits (Knitting as Witnesses) is a fellowship group whose primary mission is to provide items of comfort that are knit and/or crocheted. The items they are currently making are prayer shawls, baptismal blankets, purple baby hats, black hats, and blankets. KnitWits meets once a month, usually on the second Sunday, at 9:45 am. ALL are welcome to join at any time! Our next meeting is Sunday, September 13, in 302/Fellowship Hall. Some recent thank yous we have received: From Warmth for Warriors (wool caps): We want to thank you for your kind donation to our group and its cause. It is most appreciated and the troops will be very excited to receive a hat from you and knowing how much they are appreciated for the work they are doing in protecting our freedom. Thank You!! From Domestic Violence Resource Center in Oregon (supplies): Thank you for the yarn and needles. These supplies will continue to support our knitting and crocheting activities here at the shelter. From an individual who received chemo caps: I am touched by your heart to tangibly share love and care for others through your gift of knitting. Thank you for the two hats... They will be perfect for the days and nights that have cool weather. The warmth brings such comfort. I am grateful to have them. May the Lord pour out and increase the grace and anointing of his Spirit through your hands into every stitch of what you create so the receivers are drawn closer to his heart for them. I send you a big hug from me and from our loving Heavenly Father who is blessed by you loving His children! 12 Outreach and Servant Ministries Our Core Ministries... Core Outreach Ministries of Saint Andrew s are specific areas of ministry which congregation members are most involved in with various resources, including time, expertise, and financial resources. Our Core Outreach Ministries fall into five categories: ~ Affordable Housing/Homelessness ~ Hunger ~ Christian Education non-profits ~ Local Ministries ~ Global Missions The members of the Outreach and Servant Ministries Committee are: Joyce Arnold, Claudia Browers, Sarah Cannon, Dave Marcrander, Pastor McEachran, George Miller, Debbie Szabo, Dick Szabo, Marlyn Thorpe (Chair), and Jean Wahlstrom. Ministry Prayer Focus Each month, as a congregation, we pray for one of the ministries we support and partner with, in the world and in our community. In September, we ll pray for Emergency Feeding Program (EFP) who provides food to people in crisis hunger situations throughout Seattle and King County. EFP offers 15 varieties of nonperishable food packs, designed by professional nutritionists, to meet a wide array of individual needs. Anyone who asks is provided with food; no one is turned away. Saint Andrew s is a distribution site for EFP, collects food in the Corner of Blessing, donates funds, and organizes opportunities to volunteer for EFP. Provide Dinners for CFH in October Once again this October, Saint Andrew s has the opportunity to provide dinners for the men served by Congregations for the Homeless (CFH) in their shelter. Dinners are needed from Friday, October 2, through Thursday, October 15. Meals for about 35 men are served at 7:30 pm each evening at Eastshore Unitarian Church (near Factoria.) Meal providers prepare, deliver, and serve the meal, and are welcome to join the men to eat. This is a wonderful opportunity for individuals, friends, small groups, co-workers, families, etc.! Consider serving these men who are striving to make the transition from homelessness to permanent housing. Sign up in the Narthex. Contact the church office, , for more information. News from The Sophia Way The Sophia Way helps women on their journey from homelessness to independence. Saint Andrew s has generously been supplying cleaning materials, blanket, toiletries, and miscellaneous items for several years and the women are very appreciative of everything. The Sophia Way will have a Community Brunch on Saturday, September 19, to provide the women with a selection of fall clothing, shoes, and needed items. This is an opportunity for the women who have been placed in housing to gather with their Companions (from the Sophia Way Companion Program) and the women currently staying at the shelter Sophia s Place at St. Luke s Lutheran Church in Bellevue. We have already collected items for the event but we are in need of handbags, shoes (especially walking shoes or sneakers), umbrellas, and backpacks. Please put them in the Sophia Way basket in the Narthex by the elevator or contact Cheryl Jurrus to drop them off at her car in the parking lot if there is a large amount. You are the Key Benefit Luncheon Everyone is invited to join The Sophia Way for a luncheon with inspirational stories from women in our community. You are the Key is the theme for this benefit luncheon on Thursday, October 1, from 11:30 am - 1:00 pm at the Red Lion Hotel, Main Street, Bellevue. The guest speaker is Anitra Freeman. After 20 years in the tech industry Anitra became homeless. She will share her story and how she inspires others to find their way back to independence. Lunch is served compliments of Red Lion Hotel Bellevue. All donations are welcome. The Sophia Way invite guests to consider giving a gift of $125 or more to create a path from homelessness to independence for women in need. To register, visit Saint Andrew s Lutheran Church, Bellevue WA September 2015

13 Outreach and Servant Ministries Emergency Feeding Program (EFP) The mission of EFP is to provide an emergency response to the nutritional needs of people in crisis hunger situations throughout Seattle and King County. EFP offers 15 varieties of nonperishable food packs, designed by professional nutritionists, to meet a wide array of individual needs. Nearly half of all meals go to children. Saint Andrew s is a distribution site for EFP, serving several individuals and families each week. They receive a friendly welcome from our volunteers and a bag of food that will feed them for one-two days. For more information about EFP, call or visit Saturday, September 19, 2015 This event is EFP s most important and largest food drive of the year. Saint Andrew s is putting together teams of volunteers to be at Crossroads QFC on Saturday, September 19, from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm to collect nonperishable food items from shoppers. This consists of handing out a shopping list flyer and thanking people for their donations. Shifts are 2 ¼ hours long, and 4 6 volunteers are needed per shift. All ages can participate and it is a wonderful family activity! Sign up for shifts in the Narthex. If 2 ¼ hours is too long, we will try to match you up with someone to share the shift. Together we can turn just a few hours of time into tons of food for hungry local families. For more information, contact Debbie Szabo. One day. One day to help ensure that no one in our community goes hungry. One shift can make a big difference. Please consider volunteering on September 19! Congregation Volunteer Day for EFP Saturday, September 26, is an All Congregation Volunteer Day for the Emergency Feeding Program. Our task will be to help sort the food collected as part of EFP s Mayors Day of Concern for the Hungry on September 19. There is no limit to the number of volunteers that are needed - there will be PLENTY of work for people to do! Meet at the EFP warehouse, 851 Houser Way North in Renton. We will meet at 9:00 am and work till 12:00 noon. Sign up in the narthex. For more information contact Debbie Szabo. Sign-up. Mark your calendars. Make a difference! EFP Monthly Food Bank Offering Each month the congregation is invited to make a special monetary food bank contribution. Emergency Feeding Program is the recipient of this offering. Our goal each month is $500, and donations can be placed in the offering plate during worship or sent to the church office. Food of the Month We emphasize the collection of one commodity each month for EFP, and our goal is to FILL the Corner of Blessing with that food item. In September we ll collect Peanut Butter (creamy; ounce jars; no natural style please.) Peanut Butter goes into almost EVERY bag EFP packs, and EFP s normal supplier has run out of peanut butter. Sunday, September 13, is Start-up Sunday (return to two worship services and Education Hour.) It is also ONE JAR SUNDAY! If everyone brings just one jar of Peanut Butter that morning, we ll be well on our way to our monthly collection goal of 400 jars!! Thank you for your continued commitment to respond to those in our community who are hungry. Volunteer Update Thank you once again to the faithful volunteers who staff our Emergency Feeding Program distribution site at Saint Andrew s: Curt and Lois Eckley, Yvonne Heuving, Debbie Szabo, Heidi and Anthony Leto and Sally Arthur. Thank you, also, to Nancy Ellingson, who comes to us from Newport Presbyterian on the second and third Wednesdays of each month. Our EFP site is open Monday-Friday, 12:30 pm 2:30 pm. When people come for food, our volunteers warmly greet them and give them a bag of food that suits their needs and will feed them for one-two days. Volunteers are still needed for the first and fourth Wednesdays of each month and for Fridays. It s a wonderful opportunity to meet and serve folks from the community. To volunteer or for more information, contact Mary Mills, mary@salchome.org or Fight Hunger by Design EFP invites everyone to its upcoming Fighting for Hunger by Design Gala on Saturday, October 24, from 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm at Emergency Feeding Program, 851 Houser Way North, Renton. It will be an evening of dinner, casino games, live and silent auctions, and raffles. Proceeds will help EFP provide more meals to the county s growing need of assistance. Tickets are $50 and can be purchased at For more information, contact Catherine Wehage, EFP Development Coordinator, or cwehage@emergencyfeeding.org. 14 New Service Opportunity You may have heard of the Chicken Soup Brigade. This program delivers meals and groceries to people in our area living with debilitating illnesses and poverty. These nutritious meals and other food items are delivered each week and are a lifeline for many. Saint Andrew s is a distribution hub for many of the Eastside clients. Several years ago I was approached by Jacob Sperati with a request to help with the program. The task was a small but vital one: Someone needed to be at Saint Andrew s a few hours each Thursday afternoon to coordinate the distribution. Try as I might, I could not think of a good reason to say no! Plus Jacob is an energetic, persuasive young man with a servant s heart and I knew my fate was sealed. Now seven years later, I am still happily serving as Site Coordinator. In this capacity, I make sure the food is picked up and goes out the door with the right drivers. Up until recently, a group of Newport High School students have been doing the bulk of the deliveries (around eight stops) but that program is ending. Now we are looking for people to take up those weekly deliveries. The delivery window is from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Thursday afternoons. This would be perfect for high-school students looking for community service hours or a few friends getting together for some service and social time. We are hoping to find a pool of volunteers so the commitment would only be once every few weeks. If you re interested in more information or in getting involved contact me. Once we have a group together, Jacob will come out to Saint Andrew s to lead an orientation. This is a very personal service opportunity since you get to connect directly with those you are serving. We know Jesus ministry was focused most directly on the sick and the poor. I know there are many ways to serve but here is one that gives us a chance to humbly offer our time in this special way. 15 Outreach and Servant Ministries Jubilee Service Day Thank You Saint Andrew s Lutheran Church participated in Jubliee Service Day on August 22. It was a big success with 28 people helping from Saint Andrew s alone. There were an additional 5 people from other organizations in the area. The house we worked on is used as a transitional housing resource for six men participating with Congregations for the Homeless. Our members worked on a variety of tasks, from prepping the house the Saturday before (August 15) to donating equipment, from making lunches and cookies to doing yard work, and most obvious, painting the outside of the house. Everyone worked together and the house and yard work was finished in one day. The change in the appearance of the house before versus after was amazing. A HUGE thanks to everyone who made this day possible. We came together to do the Lord s work by being of service to others less fortunate than we are. The collaboration and camaraderie of everyone working together was such a beautiful example of being the hands of Christ. It was a rewarding experience for all, and it is amazing to see what can be accomplished when the church works together for the glory of God. Volunteers from Saint Andrew s were: Dick Lee, Cheryl Jurrus, Chris Ball, Carl and Ingeborg Nims, Dick and Debbie Szabo, Scott Lester, Claudia Browers, Vicar William Cheung, Gary Rudolph, Jean Whalstrom, Marv Kananen, Karen Grams, Jerry and Carolyn Haralson, Veda Moretti, John Nelson, Dick Swaisgood, Joan Tweten, Bill Brueggeman, Mark and Marlyn Thorpe, and Jon Thorpe. Lunch and cookies were made by Sarah Cannon, Joey Cannon, Joni Barrott, and Joyce Nelson. Additional ladders were provided by Jeff Stedman and Art Gurtel. In addition, Saint Andrew s provided approximately $650 in paint and materials to the project. Pictures and video were taken during the event and we hope to post them for the congregation s viewing sometime in the future. Congregations for Kids... Thank You! Each year Congregations for Kids sponsors a school supply drive to provide needy Bellevue School District students with some of the supplies needed. The generosity of the Saint Andrew s congregation helped make this years Good Start Back to School project another success. Thank you for your donations of supplies and money totaling about $1800 which, along with that of other congregations, allowed us to provide for 1650 students. Thanks also to those from the congregation who joined in the excitement of packing backpacks in August.
