MISSION TRIP SUNDAY: This summer, Fire Force youth spent a week serving communities in northern Idaho with Idaho Servant Adventures. God Squad went on a Mystery Tour of the Pacific Northwest, serving several organizations in Newberg, Oregon, and Ephrata, Washington. Today, these youth are serving during worship. They are also hosting our fellowship time following worship, and will share experiences and stories from their trips. Allie Bland, Torin Carmichael, Izzy Clarke, Sidney Cottrell, Sydney Holmes, Dani Naquin, Isabel Weibel, Hannah Wilcox, Mark Cottrell, Emily Andresen, Davis Carmichael, Sean Carney, Beka Gordon, Livi Myhre, Nona Gram, Jared Rowe, and Emily Harrow served on these Teams. W E L C O M E TODAY AT SAINT ANDREW S HEALING PRAYERS are offered during the distribution of Holy Communion. Kneelers are provided on the east and west sides of the sanctuary. Trained healing ministers are waiting to receive your requests before or after receiving the Eucharist. It can be especially meaningful to have a laying on of hands and an anointing of oil, if desired. It is appropriate to bring ANY request or concern that you may have for yourself or someone else. These may be prayers for emotional, spiritual, or physical healing. It can be a peace that brings wholeness, according to God s will, in a number of ways. If you are unable to walk to the kneelers, please ask an usher to assist or move to the bottom of the stairs on the East side of the sanctuary (near the pulpit) and the Healing Minister will come to you. WORSHIP SERVICE CAPTIONING: Please note that today s worship service is not being captioned. Our next captioned service is next Sunday, August 28. FELLOWSHIP: Thank you to the Fire Force and God Squad Mission Trip Teams for hosting our fellowship today! They will share stories and photos from their experiences this summer. 6 WORSHIP SERVICE CAPTIONING: Next Sunday, August 28, real-time captioning of the 9:30 am worship service is available, making our worship service accessible to those who are hard-of-hearing or cannot be at church. You can use your smartphone, PC, or tablet to access the captioning (the sanctuary has a WiFi connection.) Go to: (If you see a login page, the captioning is not yet active. Refresh your browser near the beginning of the worship service.) The website displays real-time captions of what is being spoken in the service, similar to closed captioning on television. DISCIPLESHIP MINISTRIES IS... The vision of Discipleship Ministries is To gather, encourage and equip all people through active learning, how to embody faith in Jesus as they are sent into the world. DISCIPLESHIP MINISTRIES...COMING IN SEPTEMBER Ì SERMON SERIES with Pastor McEachran What is True Religion? Four Sundays of Sermons from the Letter of James In a time when the Gospel was rooting in the world, the question was What is true religion? And is Christianity just one more religion? Or, is it the way into the truth that is life? September 4 Patience in Life James 1:1-18 September 11 Impartiality in Life James 2:1-13 September 18 Faith Active in Love James 2:14-26 and James 3:13-17 September 25 A Disciple s Way James 5:7-20 The letter may have been written by James, the brother of Jesus. It was often disputed as a book worthy of the canon, to be accepted into the Scripture, but the witness of the early Christian writers quotes it often as an antidote to those who might say they have faith but fail to reach out with works of loving service. Ì EARLY SUNDAY MORNING and TUESDAY EVENING BIBLE STUDY The Epistle of James Sundays, September 18 - October 30, 7:15 am, Tuesdays, September 20 - November 1, 7:00 pm, 322/Conference Room Facilitators: Jean Wahlstrom and Marvin Kananen The Epistle of James is the oldest book in the New Testament. It is Martin Luther s least favorite book of the Bible (he called it the straw epistle for reasons we ll discuss in class). Jean and Marvin will teach this class both on Sunday mornings and Tuesday evenings. Come when you can for this seven-week class! Ì TUESDAY MORNING BIBLE STUDY Presenter: Pastor McEachran Every Tuesday, 10:00 am, 322/Conference Room Please note: Tuesday Morning Bible Study now begins at 10:00 am! We resume meeting on Tuesday, September 13, with a 10-week study of Acts of the Apostles. We will approach it a bit differently than in the past as we begin by first looking at the conversion/call of Peter, in Mark s Gospel. Then, Saul/Paul in passages from several of his letters. Based on the first two sessions, we will travel through Acts geographically, with maps in hand to walk with the first disciples who as apostles planted the Gospel to the ends of the earth (Acts 1:18). As we begin our study, we will first review the paths of Peter and Saul/Paul as they grew in the Lord. Want a look ahead? Read the following: Mark 1:16-20; Mark 1:29-31; Mark 3:13-19; Mark 8:27-30; Mark 9:2-10; Mark 14:26-31, 32-42, and Ask the question, How is my life like that of Peter? As always, bring your favorite translation and invite a friend! 6
