This new position brings together Christian Education and Youth and Families Ministries in a new and exciting way. Congratulations Emily! SPARE CHANGE FOR CHANGE is our theme as we provide our spare change each Sunday of Pastor McEachran s sermon series Holy Baptism: Walking Wet in the World. One of the great blessing of creation, Genesis 1 and 2, is the gift of water, an essential element to sustain life. TODAY is the final collection day of our challenge to collect enough to provide six Family Water Systems to be distributed as needed by Lutheran World Relief. Each system will help a family to survive and stay healthy. By providing access to clean water we can provide a path out of poverty by providing access to water for drinking, sanitation and hygiene. The cost of each system is $600; our total goal is $3600. To date, we have collected over $2800. Share the challenge! Help make a difference in the world that God created! Change can go into the water feature in the Narthex. Cash and checks (payable to Saint Andrew s ) can be designated for Water System - LWR and placed in the offering plate. 4

5 A DISCUSSION ABOUT CANCER with Dr. John Hansen: TODAY, November 1, 3:00 pm, 301/Fellowship Hall North Saint Andrew s member Dr. John Hansen will repeat his presentation on cancer (first given on May 10.) This is a unique opportunity for those who teach on Sunday mornings or who missed the presentation in May to hear this excellent talk. Dr. Hansen s presentation features the book The Emperor of All Maladies by Siddhartha Mukherjee. Dr. Hansen will discuss: What is Cancer? The Cancer problem, the public health prospective - incidence and mortality statistics Cancer risk - the environment and life style Cancer screening and prevention Cancer treatment and outcomes Saint Andrew s member Dr. John Hansen graduated from the University of Minnesota with a major in Biology and received his MD degree from Stanford University. He returned to the University of Minnesota for internship and residency in Internal Medicine followed by further training in Hematology and Oncology at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. In 1977 he moved to Seattle to join the Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) team led by Dr. E. Donnall Thomas, a recipient of the Nobel Prize in Medicine for his pioneering work in BMT. Dr. Hansen is a Member of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Professor of Medicine at the University of Washington, and an Attending Physician at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance. SPECIAL CELEBRATION OF THANKSGIVING for 20 years of GOD S WORK through MaaSAE GIRLS LUTHERAN SECONDARY SCHOOL and 50 years through OPERATION BOOTSTRAP AFRICA (OBA): Sunday, November 8, 1:30 pm - 4:00 pm 301/Fellowship Hall Saint Andrew s has the privilege to host a celebration of faithful global mission in Africa. OBA Director Diane Jacoby, who will have just returned from a two-week visit at the school and other OBA projects in Tanzania, will bring updates. A delightful MGLSS graduate, Kalai Namuyata Laizer, currently a senior at Concordia College in Minnesota majoring in Education and Communication, will share from her educational and faith journey. There will be time for questions/answers with our two speakers, opportunities to learn more about the Maasai culture from which the students are selected, get to know other sponsors and supporters, and to sample East African food!! You will also have an opportunity to honor God s work at MGLSS through a financial gift to help purchase solar energy equipment for the school. EVERYONE is invited! Come and learn! 6 ADULT EARLY SUNDAY MORNING EDUCATION (7:15 AM) Sundays through November 22, 7:15 am, 322/Conference Room THE BOOK OF DANIEL Facilitators: Jean Wahlstrom and Marvin Kananen Daniel is not a destination, it is a journey. Come, you are invited to take this journey with Jean and Marvin through the Lions Den and Fiery Furnace. We gather on Sunday mornings at 7:15 (a.m.). We are covering the 12 chapters of this historical (the time of Israel s captivity/exile) and prophetic (times, and a half, Daniel 12:7) book. Coffee and some snacks are provided. YOUTH EDUCATION MINISTRIES (SUNDAYS AT 9:45 AM) SUNDAY CHURCH SCHOOL (age 2 through grade 5): All children are invited to join our Sunday Church School classes, held during the Education Hour at 9:45 am. All classes meet downstairs in the Education Wing. Two-year olds through Kindergarten students begin each Sunday with Music in Room 106. The SCS office is located on the lower level near the narthex stairs. Students who are new to our congregation are asked to come to the SCS office to register and receive a class assignment. AFFIRMATION OF BAPTISM/ CONFIRMATION (ABC) (grades 6-8): Classes are on Sundays at 9:45 am. Those students new to our congregation are asked to contact Pastor Telyea for more information. CROSSWALK (grades 9-12): Join us at 9:45 am on the couch side of the Youth Room. We use Augsburg s Animate to explore topics on the Bible, Faith, and Faith Practices. YOUTH REGISTRATION FORMS: Saint Andrew s has one registration form that includes medical information and permissions. This form is used for all Education, Youth, and other activities at Saint Andrew s for Complete one form per family. A conversation around the readings from Luther and Bonhoeffer. A noting of the practice of Holy Baptism in the Pacific Northwest and in our congregation. What about those who are not baptized? How many times can a person be baptized? Participant question: On All Saints Day, what is the meaning of Holy Baptism for our/my future? November 1 STEPPING INTO THE STORIES: Faith Stepping Stones for Parents of Kindergarteners Facilitators: Lois Nelson, Kari Henderson 322/Conference Room Today, with the children, we ll decorate prayer boxes. Bibles will be presented to the children during the 11:00 am worship service TODAY, November 1. November 8 MAASAE GIRLS LUTHERAN SECONDARY SCHOOL (MGLSS) AND OPERATION BOOTSTRAP AFRICA (OBA) Presenters: Diane Jacoby, Director of OBA; Kalai Namuyata Laizer, MGLSS graduate and currently a senior at Concordia College in Minnesota 301/Fellowship Hall North Diane and Kalai will give a presentation and updates about mission work in Tanzania and East Africa. At 1:30 pm, there is a special anniversary celebration of 20 years of MGLSS and 50 years of OBA. November 22 SAMARITAN CENTER OF PUGET SOUND Facilitator: Courtney Paine, Samaritan Center Counselor 301/Fellowship Hall North Samaritan Center of Puget Sound provides high quality, faith-integrative, affordable counseling for individuals, couples and families throughout the Puget Sound area. They believe that healing occurs on multiple levels--mind, body, spirit and soul--and are always willing to consider with their clients the spiritual as well as psychological aspects of healing and growth. Two counselors from Samaritan Center of Puget Sound have office space at Saint Andrew s: Dr. Mark Houglum and Courtney Paine. On November 22, come to learn more! 8 ADULT EDUCATION DURING THE WEEK TUESDAY MORNING BIBLE STUDY Presenter: Pastor McEachran 9:30 am, 322/Conference Room A new series begins on November 3, A Sampling of the Prophets. We will explore several prophetic texts with the kings who reigned at the time that the prophet spoke. We will quickly learn that being a prophet has some difficult moments in which one is called to speak the truth of the LORD. First up? Saul and Samuel (1 Samuel 12-13) and David and Nathan (2 Samuel 12:1-14, Psalm 51, and 2 Samuel 22.) FIRE FORCE (youth in grades 6-8): Sunday Night Fire Force Sundays, 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm, 319/Youth Room Bring a friend or two and join us every Sunday night! We use the Re:Form curriculum to explore the Bible and end each night playing a variety of games. SUMMER 2016 MISSION TRIP INFORMATION MEETINGS: Next Summer, both Fire Force and God Squad will go on Mission Trips. On Sunday, November 22, there will be information meetings about both trips. Student and parents, please join us! God Squad (grades 8-12): Meet at 12:15 pm in 301/Fellowship Hall North. Lunch will be provided. FIRE FORCE AND SHEEP AND SHEPHERDS FAMILIES (families with youth age birth through grade 8): Gingerbread House Decorating: Our annual Gingerbread House Decorating party is Sunday, December 6, at 12:15 pm. The entire family is invited for an afternoon of creative fun! We enjoy a potluck lunch and decorate gingerbread houses. This is a great event for grandparents to bring their grandchildren, and for mentors and mentees to do together! Sign up by November 22 to ensure that your family has a house to decorate! YOUTH AND FAMILY MINISTRIES GOD SQUAD and FIRE FORCE (youth in grades 6-12): Rise Up Concert! Sunday, November 15, 1:45 pm - 5:45 pm meet at Saint Andrew s Come see Rachel Kurtz, Agape, and Joe Davis on their Rise Up Tour at Trinity Lutheran College in Everett on November 15. This is a reunion for all those who went to the Gathering and an excellent way for those who were unable to attend to share in that experience. Servant Event at Northwest Harvest Saturday, November 21, 11:15 am, meet at Saint Andrew s We are headed to Northwest Harvest! We will meet at Saint Andrew s at 11:15 am and return at 3:00 pm. What is Northwest Harvest? Northwest Harvest is Washington s statewide hunger relief agency. Their mission is to provide nutritious food to hungry people statewide in a manner that respects their dignity, while fighting to eliminate hunger. Their vision is that ample nutritious food is available to everyone in Washington State. Join us for fun and service as we support Northwest Harvest in their mission! Sign up by November 15. 8

9 OUTREACH AND SERVANT MINISTRIES Y EMERGENCY FEEDING PROGRAM (EFP): Each month, we collect one food item in the Corner of Blessing. All donations go to EFP to help feed those in our community who are hungry. In November, we are collecting canned fruit (pineapple, peaches, fruit cocktail, and mandarin oranges.) Y THE SOPHIA WAY: The Sophia Way helps homeless women journey toward independence and a home of their own. Household items such as coffee pots, hair dryers, blenders, eating and cooking utensils, and dishes (Corelle-type, unbreakable and lightweight) are needed for women who have recently been placed into apartments. Y MAASAE GIRLS SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIPS: We rejoice at the continued scholarship support of 18 students currently being funded by members/groups of Saint Andrew s at MaaSAE Girls Lutheran Secondary School (MGLSS) and at university in Tanzania! There will be 25 new Form One students needing scholarship help beginning next January. A full scholarship for a student, Forms One through Four (grades 8 11), is $1,000; a half scholarship is $500. If you can help sponsor a student, contact the church office. If you cannot provide a full- or half-scholarship, any donation amount is welcomed and needed. Make a contribution to Saint Andrew s with MaaSAE Scholarship in the memo line. Donations are combined until a half- or full-sponsorship level is reached, and then the funds are forwarded to Operation Bootstrap Africa.
