I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Sherry Anderson will lead us in a scenario exploring common misconceptions and the realities about donating organs, eye, and other tissues. For example, did you know that a single donor can impact 50, 75, even 100 or more lives? January 27 LUKE 4:14-21 Presenter: Pastor Wes Telyea Fellowship Hall South Pastor Telyea will lead a Bible study on the Gospel lesson for today (Luke 4:14-21). January 27 OUTREACH AND SERVANT MINISTRIES PRESENTS: FRIENDS OF YOUTH POSTPONED. This presentation will be re-scheduled. February 3, 10, and 17 STEPPING INTO PRAYER (Parents of 2-Year-Olds) Facilitators: Lois Nelson and Kari Henderson This class will explore the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of the toddler, and how to fulfill those promises the parents made at their child s baptism. The sessions will include a workshop for the gifting project. Parents will make prayer pillows to be given to their children on Sunday, February 17, at the 11:00 am worship service. February 10 KNITWITS Facilitator: Dianne Chong The KnitsWits (Knitting as Witnesses) are a fellowship group whose primary mission is to provide items of comfort that are knit and/or crocheted. The items they are currently making are prayer shawls and chemo caps. All are welcome to join! February 10 OUTREACH AND SERVANT MINISTRIES PRESENTS: THE SOPHIA WAY A portion of the Share the Vision! Mission and Ministry Campaign was granted to the Sophia Way. How did they use this grant and what are their plans for their future funds from us? Join us on February 10 to find out more about this organization that helps women move from experiencing homelessness to independence, and learn about ways to get involved. February 10, 17, and 24 INTRODUCTION TO THE GOSPEL OF LUKE Presenter: Pastor Wes Telyea During this year the Gospel readings come from the Gospel of Luke. You are invited to join Pastor Telyea as he gives an introduction to Luke s Gospel including when it was written, to whom it was written, and the major themes in the Gospel. Y O U T H a n d f a m i l y M I N I S T R I E S F FIRE FORCE (youth entering grades 6-8): Tuesday Night Fire Force - Join us Tuesday nights from 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm as we explore the Bible and apply it to our lives. We check in with each other each week and we have snacks and games too! Servant Event - Help Fire Force take part in feeding the hungry of Washington by joining us on Saturday, February 2, at the Emergency Feeding Program warehouse in Renton. We will meet at Saint Andrew s at 8:30 am. We will serve at the EFP warehouse and head to Luther s Table for lunch, returning to Saint Andrew s at 1:30 pm. Sign Up in the narthex, Facebook, or by TODAY, January 27! F GOD SQUAD (youth entering grades 9-12): Dinner! High school can be busy between homework, sports, and after school activities. Take a little time out every other Wednesday night to catch up with your friends at Saint Andrew s. You can stay for 30 minutes or you can hang out for the full hour and a half! Dinner will begin at 6:30 pm and will be served until 7:15 pm. Stop by anytime you like. Our next dinner is Wednesday, February 6. F SHEEP and SHEPHERDS (families with children age birth through grade 5): Enjoy an evening out with friends on February 9. Drop the kids off at church where they will play games create crafts, eat pizza and watch a G-Rated movie with our high schoolers. Adults will meet at an offsite location to enjoy games, wine, and hors d oeuvres. Join us, Saturday, February 9, 5:00 pm -9:00 pm. Sign ups end Tuesday, February 5. 8 Y EMERGENCY FEEDING PROGRAM (EFP): January features Souper Bowl Sundays! Tackle the problem of hunger by donating 10- ounce cans of vegetarian vegetable soup or $15 to purchase a case of soup. For more information contact EFP, , or visit Y KICK OFF YOUR SHOES: As partners together in mission, Saint Andrew s is collecting PREVIOUSLY-OWNED/USED SHOES in support of Kent Lutheran Church s South Sudan Community Restoration Program. All proceeds are used to enable their ministry in South Sudan. We will be receiving shoes until January 31. Shoes in RE-USABLE CONDITION are wanted to make them available in developing nations, thus providing high-quality and low-cost footwear for people who may not have otherwise been able to purchase them. Y 2013 MAASAE GIRLS SCHOLARSHIPS: The new Form One group of 48 students has begun their Tanzanian curriculum. Please continue to pray for them and for the new matron, Sophia Nanyorri Morris, a MGLSS grad with counseling and education training, as she plays a most important role during this time. 32 Form One students for 2013 still needing scholarships and 5 full and 14 half scholarships for the Form Two through Four. $900 pays for a full scholarship and $450 pays for a half scholarship. 9 S A I N T A N D R E W S O P P O R T U N I T I E S A N D A N N O U N C E M E N T S Ì PRAYER PARTNERS FOR LENT: Prayer is at the heart of our Christian life. During Lent, we have the opportunity to pray for a member of our congregation. You may request a Prayer Partner next Sunday, February 3, in the narthex. The following Sunday, February 10, you can pick up the name of your secret Prayer Partner from the Partner Box in the narthex. It may be someone whom you have never met or a close friend. Prayers may simply be for the peace and wellbeing of each of us in the time of Lent. On Sunday, April 7, during the Education Hour, we will find out who our Prayer Partner is and find out who has been praying for us. Cheryl Jurrus is our coordinator and welcomes your questions or request for a partner if you can t be in church on February 3. Ì ASH WEDNESDAY: Lent begins Ash Wednesday, February 13. There are two opportunities to worship that day, at 12:15 pm and at 7:00 pm. Soup Supper will be served at 6:15 pm. Thank you to Women Over Fifty (WOF) for preparing soup and bread that evening. Ì LENTEN SOUP SUPPERS: Volunteers are needed to prepare and serve the soup and bread meal on Wednesdays during Lent. A sign up sheet is in the narthex. Sign up as a group or individually. Ì NURSERY COORDINATOR OPENINGS: We have been truly blessed to have Amanda Hagen, Zoë Henderson, and Christie Andresen as our Nursery attendants for the past two years. Registration begins at 8:00 am and the day concludes by 3:00 pm. The theme is Do No Harm: Invest in People! and the goal is to bring to our elected leaders the voice of compassion and justice. There will be workshops on issues, best practices of advocacy, and preparing for legislative hearings. There will also be time to speak directly with your state legislators. Interfaith Advocacy Day IS FREE. FAN will provide lunch, prepare the materials you need, and set up the meetings with your legislators prior to your arrival. Ì BUILDING AND PROPERTY PROJECTS OF THE MONTH: The Building and Property Committee has a To Do list of over 170 projects! Here are the current projects of the month : Fix the window locking latches in the Education Wing so they don t get stuck. This will take a screwdriver and about an hour. Replace the hot water valve on the sink in the Men s room below the narthex. This will take a wrench, plumber s tape, and about an hour. If you can help accomplish either of these tasks, contact Building and Property Committee Chair Rick West. Ì ADVENT CANDLES: For those of you who made the Advent Candles with Fresh Greens during the Advent Fair, it would help us immensely if you would return the plastic bowl and candle points to the church (you do not need to return the foam.) The cost of the items is substantial, about $4.50 per person, and a gift of good stewardship would be to re-use them next year. Please return them to the basket in the narthex. Many thanks! 9
